Hello, I appreciated very much your review. Did you try to use them with some extension tubes? I have the auto extension tube set from Kenko and I really like it. Do you think they perform good on both?
The Tokina is as good or better than anything Canon or Nikon has put out over the years. Occasionally, Tokina makes a real winner. Their old 300 f/2.8 atx-pro was another one...a beast...overbuilt (of course)...and tack sharp with great contrast at f/2.8. Tok gets it done...now and again.
Why do I get the feeling that no matter the results, you where already dead set on pushing the Tokina? in my opinion your test had to many uncontrolled variables to be accurate and the judgement was based on personal preference and not hard proof. Such as with macro the slightest Movement at the point the shutter fires can alter the focus. I noticed when you compared the two photos you found the area that the Tokina focused but not the exact spot of the Tamron. It might just be the video who knows?
I think you did something wrong, Tomron seems slightly overexposed and in some pics focus is not exactly the same. I have different experience with Tamron, more positive
Dude! I appreciate you taking the time to compare these two lenses, but you really need to create exact matching focused examples! ... We need to see the same part of each image in order to determine differences properly... Also, you can't be switching "Tokina on the left and Tamron on the right" on the computere screen ... Very confusing to follow... You need to smooth out the flow of information being presented in a video, not make work for the viewer to decipher what it is you are trying to present.
Just a question: sometimes, when i switch to manual focus an then return to AF in Tamron 90 on my Nikon D300, after the return the auto focus doesn't work. Is it normal? I change from M to A focus only from the lens and not from the body. I'm using it wrong? can someone help me?
hi, i have a nikon D5500. im just thinking what is the best suitable for the budget for macro lense except nikkor 40mm? I think tokina 100mm cannot auto focus on D5500, is auto focus is a big deal with macro photography? Thank you for your suggestion.
The only ones that will autofocus for you are the 40mm Nikkor 2.8G, 60mm Nikkor (AFS 2.8G version), 85mm 3.5G, and the 105mm 2.8G. The Tokina and Tamron will expose properly but will need to be manually focused. The 40mm is the inexpensive choice, but 40mm doesn't give you much space for getting photos of insects or bugs. However, it is a great all around focal length for daily use.
Having downloaded the images I'm supprised how unsharp both the pictues of the girl are. I've got the Tamron, and the images I get are way sharper than either of those samples, indeed even a cheap zoom is sharper. The tree looks a lot sharper, and in that the Tokina seems to have the edge Regards Wayne
im about to buy this tamron sp 90 non vc (original).. can we take macro handheld with this? without VC, is it possible? like taking picture of flying bee near flower
Handheld you can, but it really depends how you're shooting and the lighting. When I do handheld, I usually shoot f/32 with a speed light on top of my camera. However I have gotten good shots with the Tamron/Tokina handheld in bright sunlight. Here are a few: c1.staticflickr.com/8/7589/26925102345_ec1a5454e7_k.jpg c1.staticflickr.com/8/7052/27454124482_b29699a518_k.jpg This was about 4 stacked handheld images. There was an oil spot on my sensor so that's why that blob is on the blossom c1.staticflickr.com/8/7291/27042581080_ed8c8c7433_k.jpg Here's another in daylight: c1.staticflickr.com/2/1572/26206671812_b172d2f69d_k.jpg
Gustavo Ibarra It won’t improve lens resolution, at the contrary the dense sensor may exacerbate some limits in glass resolution. Scaled down it would however overpower any 24 mpx sensor or lower
Informative review, thanks. Could you compare the tokina with the new (2016) version of the tamron lens? Heard it's very good, better than the 2 old ones.
The link for sample portraits are beautiful. Great job. I noticed that both portrait shots are listed as using the same lens. Is that how you meant to label them?
No, unfortunately it won't autofocus as you require an in camera focusing motor. If you are using it for strictly macro work, this should not deter you as manual focus is actually preferred to ensure correct focusing .
Still in doubt between a Tokina 100mm vs a Nikor 60mm micro for a DX body 7000 serie. Shooting mushrooms and detail products photography, maybe portraits.
+Dejan Maletic They're very similar. Since they both use the older in body focusing there's much much difference. It's quick from infinity to about .6 meters with the limit knob in place. They are both fairly bad from .6 to closest focusing, and you should use manual focus to save yourself from headaches.
You confused me with you references to the tree bark test you said Tokina on the right then mentioned the Tokina is lighter ? the thing is the lighter image was on the left suggesting by what you said that it is in fact the Tamron 90 mm. very confused I have t to say and your voice is monologing just sounds drab and flat as if your not really wanting to do this sorry mate just so drab thumbs down from me as it wasn't informative or interesting at all but thanks for having a go
If your going to do q review why not do it right.... this goes with any review subject. If they weren't both in focus why wouldnt you do it again instead of being lazy and posting a so so review video?? I "guess" we will just take your word for it....
Thank you Ahmed. Excellent review. I'm leaning towards the Tokina myself.
Hello Ahmed, I like your review. may I suggest that instead of using the words "this and this lens", if you could please use their names? Thanks.
what good is it if you can't get them in focus or the same exposure?
I love my tokina atx pro d lens. Photography has never been more fun for me now. The hanks for the video
Awesome video, Ahmed! I think I'll be grabbing a Tokina AT-X 100 Pro D, awfully soon, and you helped in that decision!

youre not comparing the same areas of focus in some images..

Those photos with the different focus points aren’t comparable at all. You should have taken the time to retake the shot.
Indeed!

Ahmed Mustafa it is hard to manual focusing with Nikon d 3200 especially for macro and portrait?! THANKS
Ahmed Mustafa That's not true! I've tested Tamron on d3100 and it focused without problems...
thanks, I wanted to see these two lenses compared. I was thinking about tamron, but probably will buy tokina.

thanks bro.im about to grab used one... its quite cheap .about myr800 or 180usd
so bro, on a daylight, we can shoot normally handheld without any speedlight, & on nignt, we need speedlight+ small aperture?
I only can adapt the tamron to my Sony A7rii, do you think that the 42 mpx sensor can even improve it performance?
Gustavo Ibarra It won’t improve lens resolution, at the contrary the dense sensor may exacerbate some limits in glass resolution. Scaled down it would however overpower any 24 mpx sensor or lower

hi I own a nikon d3300 Do you think it will auto focus on this camera?
ari castillo Yes, it will, I've used the Tamron on d3100 and I think Tokina will do same...
No, unfortunately it won't autofocus as you require an in camera focusing motor. If you are using it for strictly macro work, this should not deter you as manual focus is actually preferred to ensure correct focusing .
Purchase Tamron. It has in build auto focus motor.
Still in doubt between a Tokina 100mm vs a Nikor 60mm micro for a DX body 7000 serie. Shooting mushrooms and detail products photography, maybe portraits.
Does the tamron have an internal motor for auto focus?
Yes it has
Tokina 100mm is-great lens. The Tamron has been updated to the new SP body style. I thing the glass is the same in the Tamron except for the coatings.
The Tokina is the best macro lense on the market, in my opinion.
Thanks, very useful information.
How come you haven't done any more videos? Your review was really helpful
Can you compare AF speed for this lenses?

i thought he said the Tamron was lighter.
You have potential to grow as a youtube channel but you need to spend on mic setup man!
Got the Tamron for 58.50 USD on sale. Not too bad, right? :)
Robert Einarson I wouldn’t sell mine for 300!
I couldn't find Tokina in Pakistan 😭 it's on my wishlist

there's little difference between macro lenses they are sharp and excellent by nature, it's really splitting hairs comparing macro lenses
I buy a tokina for 180 euro :D:D
bullshit you cant buy any for $150!!!
Hi
I think the Tamron easily wins this test.
Too many words man , too manyyyyy
Boring!
Boomer!
