One of the most awesome renditions on a laptop SG; in my 90 yrs on this planet. Doug you are truly a "cut" above. I put you to be one of the 4 greatest SG players today, IMHO. Thank you kind Sir for what you do for us. Wow! May Jesus richly bless you and yours always.
Thanks, I sold this Sierra about a year ago, but it looks like a stock GeorgeLs PU on it. It's a 10-string pedal steel guitar pickup, but it works well for this 8-string lap steel because the guitar has extra wide string spacing. I recently bought a new Sierra with legs, and I plan to post a new video using that soon. thanks again.
This brings back memories of growing up in East Texas and listening to some great musicians like Rudy Gimble on the fiddle and Jr Perryman on the steel guitar. Thank you so much. The Woodlands, Texas
Doug, I've been a fan of your playing for a number of years now and just when I think that you couldn't possibly sound any better, I find a recording like this. You are my favorite steel guitar musician of all my life. A tip of the hat to you Sir. A true gentleman and a brilliant steel guitar artist!!!
I enjoyed this - one of my all-time favorite tunes, made special by your diverse, articulate playing technique. Can't say I've heard a version I liked more. Thanks.
Every time I come across this video I'm drawn to it! It's so great that I have to listen to it over and over. What skill and smooth playing. Thanks again!
FLAWLESS... as usual!! Love the harmonics, great tonality! One of the Very Best, of the Best steel players around "today"... and one of two of my personal favorites, the "other"... you most likely, know and lives in the St. Louis, MO. area. Not sure what part of the country you're in... wish it was close to me... could use a few Good lessons to get me started of on the "right foot" with proper hand positioning (especially my right/picking hand). I'm now 72 years young and decided I want to learn the lap steel (just bought Two of them, and a 3rd coming... a double neck).... trying to learn off of the internet and a few books as there's Nobody left (still alive) around here (west/south west, MO.) to get me going... and I've discovered I don't do well trying to learn from a book, and the internet isn't much better for me, either.
@@dougsteel... Thank you Doug. I just picked up a National D8 (1956 model), a week and a half ago, and restoring it to like new, condition.... have new SIT strings (C6 & A6th) coming (from "Just Strings" up north of you in Milford, NH) and new "vintage" tuner knobs coming from Stew-Mac. I'm thinking that I may sell it after I'm done restoring it.... as a total beginner on the lap steel at 73 years young, I will most likely will Not ever really "need" a double 8... as nice as it is and will be. I had 2 single neck 6 strings (Gretsch & Recording King) when I wrote to you the first time, but traded both of them for the National D8, plus a little cash. Having said that, I realize now, that a D8 is probably a bit much to learn on, and all I really need is just a half decent single neck 6 string, which I bought earlier today... a new Morrell, Custom Series 6 string (Black), and should be here by the end of next week (Sept.1st or 2nd). Since my first comment to you, I found out that you're in the same state I grew up in.... back in the 50's & early/mid 60's til I left for the Army (volunteered) and off to VN.... then came home after 3 "tours" and moved out west (WY.& MT.).... too many people on the east coast (or Any coast) for my liking. I like peace & quiet and no traffic jams. lol Do you have "on line" or, dvd lap steel lessons by any chance? Thanks again for your reply, I appreciate it.
This video made me dig out my cheap lap steel, I bought on sale years ago. Watching the technique is very helpful... and for a cheap unit, it sounds great through my Fender Blues Deluxe reissue... thanks for this video !
Thanks, I'm using a Goodrich volume pedal, a Boss Delay, (and maybe a Holy Grail reverb... I can't remember). No amp, direct into computer. Band in a Box backing.
man all your videos are top notch, but for some reasopn i really love that sierra steel. looks and sounds so clean and proper. so thankful for your material doug. been a year since i grabbed my first starter lapsteel and im still loving every second of it (playing a little Gretsch with certano now). without you and troy brenningmeyer it seems all my material is covered. many blessings to you and your loved ones.
Thanks, the Sierra is a stunning looking instrument and extremely well made. But it’s very heavy, almost too heavy for the lap! Some of them had legs. They are no longer made, unfortunately.
@@dougsteel.... get yourself that fully adjustable table from Gator.... I bought one from Guitar Center just recently for my lap steels, absolutely love it. It's made primarily for keyboards, but works perfectly for my two lap steels (soon, 3.. a double neck), it even has anti-slip rubber pads attached to each end of it, even a round "bulls eye" bubble level in the center cross brace and can be adjusted up or down (8 adjustment holes per leg) with spring loaded "pins" in all four legs, plus fine tuning the leveling with adjustable screw "feet" on all four legs, and is also adjustable for width. The leveling bubble in the center, is lower than the anti-slip pads, and does Not interfere with the bottoms of either of my lap steels (Recording King (R35 w/humbucker), and a Gretsch 5715). I love it, that I can get up and move around if I need to, without having to disturb the LS. The Gator Frameworks Heavy Duty table I got was $139. at GC in Springfield, MO... and if you want to have a look at it on their website, the Number is POS #: 110288602 which will show up after you click on it, and will be to the right of the larger picture of it, above the description. It is adjustable in height from 26" to 40", and in width from 29" to 44", weighs 18 lbs, supports 132 lbs and is fully collapsible for carrying and has two attached straps with pins for locking everything in place when folded up. Its Very well made and worth ever penny of the $139.99 price, and I'm buying another one for my double neck when it arrives.
Hi Doug, What Lap Steel would you recommend for a beginner like me? There are so many to choose from . 6 string or 8 string. Thanks, love your music, listen almost every night
Thanks! I'd recommend a 6-string to start. I usually suggest that beginners start with a new, entry level, low price lap steel. I don't know what the current brands are on the market, but there are usually two or three new 6-string brands available... in the $200 - $275 range. I would avoid the ones that sell for under $200.
Wow! You should compose a tune titled "Pedals Not Required! Thanks for sharing your music with us. Each song pushes me one step closer to purchasing an instrument!
Cool! Years ago--many years ago--I owned a Silvertone 6 string, and could play a few songs decently. I am going to start again. Do you have an opinion on any of these new items--Supro re-issue, Gretsch new, and Epiphone re-issue or any other. Thanks.
IMO the string spacing is too close on the current Gretsch lap steel. I think the new Epiphone is okay. Some owners swap out the pickup for a better one. I haven't tried the current Supro. I would Avoid any lap steels that sell for under $200-250, like the Morrell.
This is great stuff! For most of my life I've had a theory that I kept to myself. I speculate that the straight steel, 6, 8, and 10 string were discarded in favor of the peddle steels long before the possibilities on straight steel were fully explored. But I could never prove it! After watching a few of your videos, I think I may have that proof I been looking for. It makes me want to play again after 10 years of being quit from the dobro. Maybe steel this time. Rich Arnold.
Thanks! I agree that there is a lot of unexplored territory in non-pedal steel. In the late-50 s, early 60s, pedal steel became all the rage. A few players refused to switch over. Jerry Byrd was one who stayed with non-pedal. I think we can all agree that he made the right decision!
Thanks, I'm glad you like it. As far as a starter lap steel guitar, I recommend the Rogue Jersey Lightning OR the Recording King. Each costs under $200. Entry-level lap steels, decent quality. Also a Dunlop 918 Bar. Check musiciansfriend and amazon

It's one thing to own 5 steel guitars - it's quite another to be able to play 'em as Doug does!
