On a rather bright note it should be remembered that many of the devs of StarCraft, StarCraft 2 and WarCraft 3 have joined up and launched a new RTS studio - Frost Giant, and they're working on a game right now.

Thank you for acknowledging that AoS is the birth of the moba genre, and not DotA. It's such a common misconception people seem to have, that the WC3 DotA map was where it all truly began.

Just to add, even though Blizzard does not do active development. Starcraft 2 does still see balance patches and new maps, there is still a very active pro scene with large prize pools and fierce competition. Starcraft: Brood War is massive in South Korea with ASL matches regularly having over 100k viewers and a generally large streaming audience on afreeca. Both the games have an active ranked ladder with players of all skill levels.

I loved this game so much! The sheer amount of creative things one could do with a "Use Map Settings" game was mind boggling for the time. I'm sure starcraft was one of the leading reason why tower defense games got so popular in the 00s.
Another feature you don't see anymore that I always loved about StarCraft was the spawn disk feature. It allowed you to install part of the game on another computer and play it without the disk. There were limited features but the most important part was that it encouraged LAN parties. Used to install it on all the school computers and setup giant 8 person games during class.

We will NEVER see another game like SC in our lifetimes, even though my age has stunted my reaction time, and my ability to multi-task has stopped me from being able to stay competitive in SC2 ranked, I am STILL obsessed with this game....there is simply something too.....unique about this game, no RTS has ever been able to capture the sheer brilliance of the genera that starcraft has, and I am saying this as someone who leans more towards fantasy than sci-fi!!!
It is the last bygone of the days of old, when Blizzard was the peak of the golden age of gaming, I hate to sound like I am drowning in nostalgia, but I honestly can't think of any other genera-defining games that have had as big of an impact as Starcraft did on the RTS games, sure there are big names like COD, Battlefield, and Halo who set the standards of current FPS games, but can you honestly name a single game other than WC3 that ever came CLOSE to being the pinnacle of the genera that SC did for the RTS genera? Sure, Age of Empiresalmost got there, but it never made it into the mainstream.
We witnessed gameing history when we saw SC rise into the behemoth it once was, and I highly doubt we will ever see something come close to what it once was, in any genre of gaming, ever again.

Matt, from cringe (but entertaining) League of Legends videos, to full on hyper professional high quality documentary movies. Bless you! Blizzard did hit its high march for the Story of Star Craft at the very least as the third expansion of SC2 ended on a high note, true with room to come back, but definitely good enough an end to be THE END. Personally i belive a worthy successor could have been the Dawn Of War series of games from Warhammer 40k, unfortunately THQ is gone and so are those high quality story games that were part of the whole lore.
On a side note, maybe grab Uberdanger for one of your next ones just to help a fellow CC over a hurdle . And once again bless your imagination for brining entertainment back.

Ok real interaction after watching, what an amazing video. I’m absolutely swept away with the editing and pacing of this video, it wound up to be an incredible listening and watching experience. You had my attention at every turn. Well done, this is genuinely a work of art.

Thank you for making this, one of the best presented StarCraft retrospectives I've seen. I like to think I already knew a lot about Starcraft's alpha and development, but I didn't know about Dominion and its influence on the game. The tie ins with South Korea's history was a nice touch as well, offering a fuller picture as to how the game got popular in that country.

SC1 cannot replaced, surpassed or matched. It's diamond standard balance, feel, and limitation makes it almost a genre in and of itself.
I think SC1 can make a huge comeback if Microsoft had some trust in the scene and community and gave a little resources to make it blossom

This is one of the most nostalgic videos I've seen, as all SC videos are... I'd just like to add, that it wasn't just SC it was us too. This was history in the making and we played a part in it. SC to me represents something truly mythic, like Star Wars and Marvel before 2012. There are other properties and genres of course, different things for different people, but SC and AoEII in that late 90s period early 2000s period are just sublime. RTS especially was remarkable for it endearment in the community; good will that has persisted to even this zoomer age. These games changed the world and I make no exaggeration. Many of the smartest people who run the world today played these games. Starcraft is the darling of the computer gaming scene and it always will be. I haven't played it in years (I have weird memories of reinstalling it in like 2006 briefly on an old com,) and I don't know what happened to my discs, but I know one day I will reunite with my baby and play again. SC is definitely in my afterlife, my next life and is to me like a life partner. It is in my soul like no other games except AoEII, PSO, Zelda: OoT, KOTOR, Battlefront 2005, and BF3 (all of which were paradigm shifting games, ) and until this video came up, I didn't even realize it. That's how important SC is. My brain didn't even register it as a game. It was a formative experience, not a game. Brood War is a perfect game. Perfect. I love you Starcraft, may you live on for all times.

If you make 'but this needs another 20min video' to actual 20min videos of starcraft2 idiotic kerrigan and raynor lovestory AND make a video of how LOL rose to what it is today (if you do please include the showmaker reaction to wow leage of legends for ksante (as riot making op champs)), you will have +500k subscribers. But please make LOL one first, it will get more views. All the best

22:34 SC2 is a very different game, not an ‘update’. Extremely important to underline
StarCraft: Remastered was an update for SC1
SC2 release helped precipitate globalised esports; it was hugely popular outside Korea and was very big for its first two years especially, it didn’t fall by the wayside but achieved a new global peak in popularity in general
Helped launch the success of twitch as a gaming streaming platform, partly because of the teamliquid stream list that provided viewership

Its weird how they put something like starcraft 1 on a kid's channel.... The first game is very dark theme'd, Zerg are genuinely scary, protoss are badass yet elusive...and the Terrans genuinely seem to strive for the Glory and survival ...of Mankind, it just doesn't give the fun space cowboy adventure vibe that SC2 gives.

It has never been a better time to get into the original e-sport! Brood War is growing again with places for newer players (Coach Pupil League/ Rookie Starleague), Huge tournaments for non-Koreans (Bombastic Starleague), and many long running leagues still with tons of teams and divisions (Brood War Clan League now in it's 56th SEASON!) And best of the best entertainment with Korean leagues full of Legends old and new (ASL casted by fan favorites Tastosis and higher level players like Scan/Nyoken, both in full english)

    Grammar police here:
Lesser offence: you pronounced nuclear as "nucular" and that's so pathetic that the Simpsons mocked it decades ago.
Unforgivable offence: 25:14 you wrote "in IT'S professional scene". ITS. ITS professional scene. WTF does "in it is professional scene" mean, huh? Illiterate.

Oh my god I remember that 2016 scandal. It was most notably Life. The most famous player at the time and best zerg player. There were jokes with his zerglings being "Life's Lings" with +1 (attack) +1 (defense) on hatch and he somehow always got in the base and won engagements with his insane micro. I remember the championship it was sOs vs Life a PvZ and I was upset because Life lost it but it seemed all so theatrical in hindsight. All 7 games of the finals... damn emotions. Fuck match fixing greed

I used to love playing custom games on starcraft in particular my favorite was this Pokemon one where you had units that would evolve and stuff it was so fun. Between that and Diablo one and two it was the golden age for me for gaming and for blizzard. I also loved playing Unreal tournament back in 1999 2003 2004 and beyond. My dad's clan won the OGL tournament (online gaming league) which was a big deal back then. I joined the clan when I was a bit older

FrostGiant studios will make the next RTS I'm very hopeful. Also, Serral is the GOAT, his rise was the most insane thing ever, the fact he won every tournament the year he won BlizzCon shows how good he is. Thank you for covering one of my favorite games Magikarp.

I remember the teachers went on strike at our school for a month and so me and my bro just got to stay home and play Starcraft all day.
Such fond memories, back when gaming was special

I don't think you can look at Starcraft broodwar and Starcraft 2 as the one entity.
Broodwar somehow, someway survived a horrific match fixing scandal (South Korea REALLY doesn't like matchfixing), all games being taken off TV and a sequel being made immediately after these first two events and somehow the Broodwar scene in Korea is more lively than the Starcraft 2 scene.
Somehow someway a huge chunk of the big Broodwar pros from the Kespa era are back, the Korean community is very slowly growing and even the foreign scene is maybe not growing but it's not losing players very quickly, hell they even got a foreign player to qualify for the biggest Broodwar tournament there is (Scan).
Broodwar will never die, we said goodbye to it once and yet it never left. even insanely horrific hacks being widepsread at times hasn't damaged the community for Broodwar.
Starcraft 2 is like fine but also not at the same time. Balance issues in SC2 are a lot more prominent a grievance, the community is used to frequent patches which stopped for ages (and just came back) and the scene is a lot more international (which makes it hard to please everyone) and a lot more SC2 players aren't like super diehards. I think in the end SC2 will be fine but SC2 is a lot bumpier of a ride than the constancy of Broodwar

Been a fan of StarCraft since it's release. Started watching pros play from SC2, but now I watch both SC1 and SC2 tournaments.
Blizzard no longer supporting SC2 is not the end - it just means after a decade or two I'll be watching SC1,2 and 3 tournaments.

Growing up... we only had 1 computer on dial up internet. Everytime my sisters boyfriend called or someone picked up the phone I would get kicked off lol.
I would have to sneak into my parents room in the middle of the night and would play "fastest map possible" 4v4. Giant armies just clashing in the middle of the map.

Starcraft Broodwar is doing better than ever in Korea now. The pros are teaching classes on it and they have university teams battle each other. The top 1on1 league, ASL, is still bringing in young new talents together with the old talents (some coming back from sc2). They mainly earn income as streamers, where viewers sponsor bouts between desired players. The meta strategies are evolving faster than ever due to everyone streaming the game, it's amazing what broodwar still is, after a quarter of a century.

So Zoomer here ✋ Gotta say, I'm really happy to see a video like this on Starcraft. I wasn't even born when this game came out, but after my stepdad showed me the game (and beat me like 12 times in a row, lmfao) I've ended up growing a little attached to the game. Absolutely a wonderful video, I look forwards to your next works!
