  • Beta blockers are a medication most commonly used to treat high blood pressure. Thanks to a new social media trend, however, people are turning to this prescription drug to self-treat other conditions like anxiety.
We sit down with Dr. Kevin Boran, interventional cardiologist, to learn the truth about beta blockers and how they can affect the body.

I've had a psych here in the US prescribe it to me for off-label anxiety use. For me, my anxiety/panic attacks were caused by the fear of the symptoms themselves, causing a vicious cycle. Meaning, experiencing the physical symptoms of a panic attack (heart palpitations, shaking, sweating, dizziness) actually caused me severe anxiety and predisposed me to these panic attacks. I started avoiding situations I've done hundreds of times before out of fear that they might incite a panic attack. Benzodiazepines did little to help since my symptoms were primarily physical, not psychological.
Beta blockers, through interrupting the physical symptoms, broke the cycle entirely and I'm now in complete remission - and I don't even take the beta blockers anymore. Just knowing that I have a "cure" for acute panic on-hand that 100% works is enough to eliminate that mental state of fear. It's a fantastic medication IMO.

Today I took 2.5 mg. 1/4 of the smallest pill you can get. It helped me so much. I had a work meeting and felt great. I’ll say almost zero anxiety. Highly recommend, although it can make people dizzy when getting up/sudden movements according to my pharmacist. I've tried so many bad meds, and I'm relieved that this one works. This drug proves that it's not "all in your head". And it's not psychoactive or addictive. It shouldn't have taken me a year and half to be put on this drug. Clearly state your symptoms to your doctor and ask for an ECG to be performed.

I used to take 120mg. long acting propranolol for arrithmias and essential tremors but the drug company had a callback because of a impurity. Now I take 60mg. twice a day but it doesn't work near as well because of the surge and then the tapering off till the next dose. I'm 67 and have been on it for 35 years. It quit working about 8 years ago, so I quit taking it for 2 years and the doctor tried numerous other meds with no success. But a person with a tremor will get a shower of sparks, setting off the tremors. I can’t understand why it’s used for anxiety. I started taking it for POTS and my heart rate.
But I already have bad anxiety.
Propranolol gave me the absolute worst symptoms. I was bedridden and felt so sick on a very low dose. The propranolol made my anxiety 10,000x worse!
Started when I started the med and lasted the months that I was on it.
I switched to metoprolol and the side effects aren’t as bad and tolerable. But I had no idea that beta blockers could mess with your brain. My depression and anxiety have been at their absolute worst since being on it.
But I have to take it for my heart rate so I’m pretty much stuck with this side effect of these beta blockers. Absolutely mind blown that it’s prescribed for anxiety!
Seems like they’re trying to use beta blockers to steer away from using benzos for anxiety sufferers.
But in my experience, beta blockers make anxiety so much worse.

You're in the extreme minority, while beta blockers are used more for blood pressure/heart health they literally work by blocking/suppressing adrenaline and even cortisol, which both can trigger anxiety and severe cases of panic. While different people react differently to medications or other health complications come into play, your reaction to propranolol especially is rare (disregarding other factors/health complications) its regarded as the best beta blocker for anxiety of all kinds and even for benzo withdrawal/taper which is known to be one of the worst withdrawals from any medication or drug. Its one of the highest and best reviewed medications across the board, so just because you can't understand it because it didn't work for you doesn't speak for the mass majority that it does work for. Not every person is supposed to feel everything the same way you do.

Beta blockers won't change the way you think, they don't alter your state of mind. They help with the physical manifestations of fear and anxiety, which prevents you from going into panic mode. Anxiety is a vicious circle, the physical manifestations make you even more anxious. So if you can stop those, that in itself has a calming effect, and lets you approach stressful situations with a clearer mind. But no, beta blockers won't give you a high, they won't make you feel suddenly happy.

Propranolol is not selective, but it is the best in terms of anxiety, as it can cross the blood-brain barrier, block beta receptors, and modify serotonin receptors. As for the rest of the blockers, they work on the heart only. 30mg is an excellent dose, and if it does not work, take Lyrica 50mg with it, and anxiety will go to hell.

People must have different types of anxiety. Id rather have the anxiety these comments are explaining than consatnt nervousness and severe stress. People think they got it bad. Ive lived with palpitations, severe pain across my chest and burning brain but i would still rather that than the way propranolol makes u feel. Its like fluoxetine. Makes u feel spaced and your body feel a bit slow but doesn't give peace or confidence like people claim. Won't be taking this crap again. And i have healthy blood pressure so its not even worth it.
