Hello KSO! Robert Smith (lead singer and songwriter for The Cure) wrote this song for his then fiancée, Mary, just before they married. They met some 41 years ago, back when they were pre-teens. They've been married now for 34 years. She's his main muse and inspiration. This song came about at a time when The Cure were constantly touring and recording, and touring and recording, and so on. So you can understand better when he sings, "however far away" or "however long I stay, I will always love you".
Back in the 90s Robert Smith's grandmother lived near my school. One day I was walking home and he drove past me with full hair and make up done. Yes, he looks like that when he goes to visit his Nan 🤣
Lead singer Robert Smith was Goth before anyone knew what Goth was.

The Cure was a band that I used to listen to obsessively when I was in my 20s, and I loved this song because of the sorrowful words of broken relationships. I see someone mentioned 'goth', but I just see him at the time as 'suito punk' like I was. The Cure was one of the greatest in alternative music in 80s- instrumental and mystique.
Lovesong was a wedding gift to Robert's wife, Mary.
and they're still together today, they make a nice couple i always thought.
That instrument next to him in the beginning is a shamisen, a type of Japanese guitar with 4 strings.

I've been watching your reactions for a while now and somehow didn't realize you hadn't heard The Cure. They're one of my favourite bands ever and have an incredible catalogue. Gonna suggest some deeper cuts, like The Caterpillar, Six Different Ways and Hot Hot Hot.

This song is such a beautiful counterpart to the titelsong of that album Disintegration,- where he spits out all of his anger, sadness and frustration in an almost ten minute epic song. I think Disintegration holds some of the most haunting and beautiful lyrics I have ever heard. I would love, love, love to hear your reaction on that one.

May I request that you look up a band called Liliac...they just headlined a Music Festival over in India a couple weeks ago. Maybe dial up one of their Original Music Videos? Maybe start with "Sail Away"...before taking on the harder rock ones, like ..."Not Afraid (Extended Version). Band is made up of 5 kids...2 sisters, and 3 brothers. And, they are the BEST Family ROCK band you will ever hear...( and you won't have to even pause any of their videos....VERY reactor friendly Band)
