It's a timing issue with the Cuckoo. They laid the egg in the nest too late. By the time the Cuckoo hatched, the host chicks were already too large to push out. The hatchling will still try until it's exhausted. By the time the instinct kicks off, they're too weak and too small to compete against the host hatchling. You will notice it's still has it's eyes closed while it's host hatchlings already have theirs open. This also adds to the advantage that they can see their parents come in with food before they reach the nest, allowing faster response to feed chirps.

I wonder whether there might be enough food because the older birds might fledge before cuckoo really needs food. If older birds leave then parent birds might have more time to feed cuckoo during cuckoo growth spurt.

@@roysha411No, they can’t introduce the parasitic chick later as the mother will notice it and kill it. They succeed only by tricking the mother early during the incubation and later eliminating the actual chicks when they hatch to be the only spoiled kid. in this case, the chick couldn’t kill the bio kids and got stuck there facing many challenges like lack of food, variation in size may trick the mother into thinking that the kid is sick by not growing up and thus ignoring him to death. In case, the cuckoo is placed in a nest of smaller bird family and there are siblings that survived his murderous tricks, he’ll outgrow the rest and the mother will think that he’s large enough and doesn’t need food when he’s still young. It can go both ways.

Y'all, the cameraman probably isn’t hand-feeding the cuckoo to make sure content keeps coming. Past vids have shown the parents feeding it before.
It's also not unheard of for parents to recognize brood parasites, and if they don't kill the egg/nestling outright, then they might feed it just enough to keep it alive and thereby stave off the parasite's observant real parents' retaliatory attacks while prioritizing their native children.
That, however, takes discerning and likely experienced parents, and idk about this pair.
At this point, it just lo9ks like the cuckoo isn’t getting fed as much (though not necessarily not getting fed at all) because its weakness makes it beg for food less frequently, and it is often obscured by its foster siblings.

I suspect the parent birds give him food, not the person filming. It would be a lot of time, trouble and effort for the camera person to feed a bird in the forest, unless he camps right beside the nest to feed it, which i doubt.

@@Intrepid_Explorer i know, nature could be terrible at times. Also what seems the most innocent and kind gesture like feeding a baby, could become an act of death.

@@anryx555 It's a shame, but it's the cuckoo's own fault for prioritizing trying to kill the other chicks instead of focusing on competing for food earnestly. With focusing so much on pushing, survival becomes an all or nothing gamble, wheras if it simply coexisted with the other birds food would most likely have been shared relatively evenly, and all could have probably grown up. This cuckoo lost, so it's reaping the consequences of its bad instincts.

I give the photographer benefit of the doubt not feeding the cuckoo chick. If there is abundant prey around it's likely the cockoo could get fed.

Maybe put the cuckoo in its own nest, and hand feed it yourself, I'm ok with nature playing out as well, but I think you may be feeding the little cuckoo here and there, prolonging things for views, again, I'm cool with that, but you could just build a little nest yourself and hand raise the cuckoo, I'd watch that as well as this

At least this is a good cuckoo mother who didn't dump her egg into another bird's nest. I applaud this cuckoo parent. I am amazed at how none of these chics tried to throw the others out of the nest. Do they only do this ie throw the eggs and offspring out of their nests to other bird species, like the ones their mothers invade and leaves their egg for other birds to nurture
