Leopard Seal vs Penguin Chick - Nature is amazing!

- A Leopard Seal patrolling the edge of a penguin colony investigates a helpless Gentoo Penguin chick that has been swept out to sea in Antarctica.
The events in this video played out over a couple of hours. The footage is in sequential order.

Well, penguins have to be at least a certain size/age before seals are allowed to hunt them. They will get their hunting license suspended if they don't comply.

Leopard Seals are incredibly intelligent predators, that act more like farmers than anything. They only eat when they're hungry, they only eat adults or adult males if they can help it, and they they will routinely hunt with no intention of hurting or killing when they're not hungry to practice their skills and to get as close to their food supply as possible to better understand them and even scare away other potential predators.
There's not many predators out there which have that much restraint and investment for their own long-term benefit.
That is very interesting yea but seals are amazing animals
Most creatures in the animal kingdom will only kill for food and only when they are hungry. Some will kill for territorial reasons or breeding rights and some will kill for training purposes, like orca for example. Most have naturally restricted diets and won't stay from that unless by mistake. Humans could learn a lot from animals but we tend not to as we are so 'intelligent'.

The seal might have had no idea to react based on the appearance of the chick. It was curious to be sure but it might have never encountered a chick so young before so it had no idea what do, and what was running through its mind was "should I eat it, play with it, leave it alone...looks fluffier than usual, probably something wrong with it, imma let it go"

To begin with, the chick is a Gentoo Penguin, not an Adelie. I suspect the chick was to weak to trigger the predatory response. I don't know what the comment about nest rot is supposed to mean. The chick is very weak because it is in very cold water without adequate insulation.

The seal might have thought the chick being not fatty enough. When food is abundant, it is possible that leopard seals only choose those juicy enough to hunt, just in order to reduce their teeth wearing.
Bottom line,you and I know nothing about this seal and whats going on in his brain.so everything besides which penguin it is pretty much pure speculation,humans think they are in the know and we aren't.

There was something about the chick that didn't seem right and I am sure the seal realized that as well. I don't think it was nest rot, as mentioned below, because the chick was in the water and was molting, so a lot of that smell could have washed off. There was something different about this one though, that's for sure.
If the chick were sick or defective he would have been eaten immediately. This is what the mother-nature does even among species of the same family.
By the way, this is one of the basic rules in the wild.

First time I've ever seen a Seal show care towards its prey the little baby Penguin their usually the predator towards Penguins. I think the Seal sensed the penguin was a little baby chick & it was strugling on that little floating iceberg it was so exhausted to swim back to land.
