    Bethesda has got to start including customer input as part of the development cycle. They need to be out here polling the audience and utilizing AB testing, not getting defensive and ignoring the clear priority of the customer. That’s how companies fail.

      Bethesda has a no chance as long as Todd and Emile are still around. Todd doesn't want to make unique games, he just wants to make a copy of whatever he's into at the time. Like Lord of The Rings, Game of Thrones, and Star Wars. And Emile, do I even need to say anything? He's a terrible self absorbed writer who hates the fans for wanting to play fun games their way instead of worshiping his writing.

    Fallout 4 was already a "previous gen" game, and Bethesda hasn't been anywhere close to state of the art since Skyrim. The real strength of the studio was always immersive world building. The humorous characters and stellar music also carried the games, but most of the credit obviously goes to the actors and the composer. The gameplay was passable at best, but the immersion was so great that players didn't mind.

    Honestly sometimes i don't really think the engine is the core problem, though i definitely think it adds to bethesda's overall problems, the world sizes are usually comically tiny when compared to the canon of the universes, and whilst i 100% think that having a lore-accurate sized elder scrolls or fallout would be more dreadful than fun to play, i don't think we need *entire* countries, but then again, at maximum we might be able to get 1 hold from skyrim stuffed inside the entire skyrim worldspace and chances are it would still be under-scaled when compared to the lore, and 1 city would for a lot of people be really disappointing, and even then, when we did get a proper scaled city in fallout 4 in the form of Boston, one entire spot of the city was so unstable it almost always guaranteed a crash, but then again, you can't really compare a compact urban jungle to a fantastical city that probably has one-floor buildings and is probably really open. Then you have the melee and magic and archery and stealth, all pretty undercooked systems, apart from funnily enough, archery. For melee i feel like it would be cool if they take inspiration from vermintide games or Kingdom Come, or even make their own combat system that has a bit more tactics or mechanics involved than "my sword deals more damage than your sword, and i have more health than you, so i win this fight." And the magic system could be improved by re-introducing the magic crafting system, because i find it pretty ironic that they wanted skyrim to be a power fantasy, yet removed one of the most power-fantasy friendly mechanics in TES games. And archery i think should have a system where the NPC's could maybe hear when the arrow goes off if they're close enough (because lets be honest, most people would really only use archery for stealth), and because i dont really know how else to handle the archery system, and for stealth, i guess making it so heavy armor makes it harder to be stealthy? Anyways, that's my opinion on what i think would help bethesda improve their games, and yes, i know that only like, 2% of the people who saw this comment will actually read it to the end.
    EDIT: Also the writing in the games is infamously comically bad, i'm not saying to get rid of Emil entirely, he came up with the dragon language, but i think hes better suited as a world builder or overall lore writer, not a full-on story writer.

    It is not the engine that holds bethesda back. It's bethesda. Morrowind did not have loading screens entering cities. Modders fixed many, many bugs. Modders removed loading screens separating cities and the open world in skyrim, added working ladders, drivable carriages, etc.. Modders added driveable vehicles to fallout nv. Even working co-op was added by modders. Heck, even full games much better than bethesda's are on the same engine, such as Enderal.

    We are seeing a shift away from that acceptance by consumers but there are so many consumers within individual studios' markets who will unabashedly support their favorite studio, no matter what, that it will be a while before we see an industry wide standard and quality adherence.

    The Witcher three is an objectively better game than Skyrim but I still enjoy my time with Skyrim more.

    • @panzer00
      @panzer00 2 дня назад +11

      My problem with the Witcher 3 is I have to play as Garalt. I have the same problem with Fallout 4 - I have to play as the character Bethesda wants me to play as, Nate or Nora. BGS ruined the suspension of disbelief in voicing Nate and Nora and forcing the narrative to be about finding their son. It makes it very difficult to roleplay someone who isn't Nate or Nora because the dialog is constantly bringing up Shawn. I have so many characters in Skyrim that are more than just a build and I don't have to become the Dragonborn, I can RP as a normal citizen of Skyrim or an assassin. There are moments when Dragons or the Dragonborn are brought up but it's rare, especially if you never speak to Balgruuf.
      Bethesda has fallen into the video game "RPG" trap where builds are "roleplay." Skyrim is one of the closest examples of a video game with true roleplay agency and then add mods to it.
      If TES 6 has a voiced protagonist, it will be a failure just in that design decision which departs from the established design I imagine most Elder Scrolls players want but aren't cognizant of.

Adventure- excellent story and writing . Skyrim- action- probably doesn't even count as a combat system just right click and left click till tour opponents health is lower than yours. Starfield was the first single player RPG I had played since Ocarina of Time (or maybe FFX counts even though it's a turn-based team). Still, I was BLOWN AWAY with what Starfield was, but that's because I don't play modern games. I play Diablo 3 over and over every season. I play the mid-aughts LEGO franchise games over and over. I play World of Warcraft (but hate any xpac that came out after about 2012). I had no idea a game could do ANYTHING like Starfield.
    I liked it so much that I went and got Skyrim... and... it was the same game, but medieval and more customized, which makes sense because in the medieval times very few people traveled that far from home anyway unless they were part of an army. AWESOME! I love medieval games!!! So recently I started looking at Fallout, because clearly I *am* the kind of player the classic Bethesda format is for. I think I might give FO4 a try too since Boston is my favorite city in the world. I'm SO excited to see a whole different style/genre of intricate and hand-crafted wonders courtesy of the nuclear shenanigans.
    But yeah, compared to Skyrim and Fallout, I understand why people who *HAVE* been playing these games for years already desperately wanted innovation on a theme (and I completely agree they needed an updated engine). I'm the odd one out here just picking up a Bethesda game for the first time. But I've been watching and waiting for YEARS for a good space RPG that wasn't all cartoony. For me, it fits the bill, and I'm going to keep playing it because I truly enjoy it, bugs, empty space, loading screens, and all. It sucks so many people were disappointed by it, but there are a lot of us out here who are having the time of our lives.

Or even just a video on what Starfield should’ve / could’ve been gameplay-wise. I think we know Starfield’s shortcomings but hearing how people would’ve done it differently is always interesting. I actually don’t mind seeing more Bethesda videos if you’re able to take fresh evaluations each time or as news comes out. Very simple. Don't make 1000s of Planets for one. Set the setting to just the Solar System with only 8 Fully Handcrafted Truly HUGE Planets. Since Starfield's setting is about "NASA Punk", And let the story center around Humanity's First Discovery and Contact of a Alien Civilization. End the game once the Alien Civilization is discovered to whet players appetties for Starfield 2 where said Aliens can be a Playable Race.
      Anything is better than this "Space Magic Sh*t" that Starfield is doing now.

      Microsoft is famous for having a very gentle hand to allow their properties to produce without an overbearing boss. The problem is that sometimes you need to do a little tough love to get a better product made. Bethesda is so high on their own supply and protected by the parent company that they arent seeing what is actually happening with their games with customer feedback. The only fault Microsoft has that I can tell is that they have let the kids have the run of the house, and they need to be put back in place. Before Microsoft, Bethesda was on this same track anyway so its just been more of the same.

    Bethesda is tone deaf and completely ignores the fanbase. As evident in yesterday’s “Fallout Day” event Bethesda hyped up for the last week only to talk about Fallout 76 for 20 minutes. All they care about is trying to reach the biggest audience possible. But in the process they’re just making extremely bland games that few end up enjoying. The only reason 76 has managed to survive is because Fallout has an insanely massive fanbase, and while they brag about 76s numbers the truth is that game is HEAVILY underperforming given the size of the Fallout community. It safe to say 75% of the fanbase is completely uninterested in Fallout 76, yet if you hear BGS talk it’s the latest craze everyone’s going wild over. Fallout 76 does have a loyal fanbase but the Fallout IP in general is under performing because 3/4 of the fanbase are alienated by 76 being the only new Fallout experience for the last decade with no signs of another single player Fallout coming anytime soon.

    The Engine Is Fine, within the hard limitations the code base of Creation has baked into it.
    Modders accomplish projects Todd dismisses, like make a Fallout game outside America.
    Bethesda simply doesn't have enough creative talent - or the free-will of that specific talent - to make a great IP from scratch; Starfield is proof that Bethesda simply cannot create fun new ideas, Starfield's nested multiverse hard-sci-fi premise would have only been interesting during the infancy of Real World America's Space Race, and is only palatable to people whose only exposure to exploration games *is* Bethesda Games.

  • @panzer00
    @panzer00 2 дня назад +6

    The Witcher 3 is not a roleplaying video game - we have to play as Geralt.
    I do not have to be the Dragonborn in Skyrim. I can make whoever I want to make. With mods, I can start Skyrim wherever I want to and never even speak to Balgruuf. I can start Vanilla Skyrim and just not report that Helgen was attacked by a dragon. I can be a farmer, a miner, a hermit, a bandit, a thief, an assassin, a vampire, a lycan, a holy warrior etc, etc, etc. The possibilities are _almost_ endless in Skyrim, add mods and it is endless.
    I really thought that Bethesda would code more possibilities and agency in questlines but either they lack the talent to do so, they dont want to do it, or it is impossible to do so. Instead, we got a voiced protagonist in Fallout 4 that shoves Shawn in your face every other dialog option and we got an MMO with zero roleplay in Fallout 76 and we got an action adventure fps with ZERO build diversity in Starfield.
    TES 6 will not have what I want it to have, which is more roleplay agency and less railroading.

    • @fix-error

      The Witcher 3 is absolutely a roleplaying game. Being less open-ended in some respects, like your character's appearance and backstory, allows the game have deeper choices and consequences in the quests/story. It's a tradeoff that Bethesda and CDPR both make, as you mentioned with FO4 and Starfield. But saying one of the best RPGs ever made isn't an RPG is wild.

    • @panzer00
      @panzer00 2 дня назад

      @fix-error we have fundamentally different definitions of roleplay then.

    • @fix-error
      @fix-error День назад

      @@panzer00 I agree, it sounds like my definition of an RPG is less specific than yours.
      I see it more as an umbrella term for games where players assume a role and can choose how/when they approach certain objectives. Strong narrative focus is also important, I think.
      I'm curious what other categories games like Mass Effect fall under for you. If not an RPG, what would you call it?

    • @Vert_GreenHeart
      @Vert_GreenHeart День назад +2

      I'd rather play as a predefined character with good writing than a undefined character with boring writing, the real fun is striking a balance between the two, something like Fallout New Vegas where you are courier, you did some things before and have some sort of backstory but still a blank slate when playing him/her.

    • @panzer00
      @panzer00 День назад

      @Vert_GreenHeart I just don't think playing a predefined character whom the story is written around and predetermined is roleplay.
      The world exists and consequences will happen regardless of my intervention but if I choose to intervene, my actions _could_ fundamentally alter those consequences and the perception of the world around me; it's ultimately a limitation of what is possible to code while maintaining functionality.
      My idea of roleplay might never be possible in the context of video games. I believe that AI could get us closer to that, though - altering code in real time as a response to the player characters' actions where the AI plays the role of DM in real time. If that is is possible, is an entirely different problem.
      Or AI writing an infinite amount of possibilities that when met trigger unique consequences. Developers could leverage AI for roleplay agency.
