  • Summary of Amstrad PC 2286 specs and quick look inside. Glimpse at Populous, the legendary game released the same year as this computer (1989).
    It's just a brief overview but a rare one: there was no video so far about the inside of this machine!

    This was our first PC and Populous was my favourite game. Did you ever get the expansion? I found out years ago that they simply reversed the seed and it generated hundreds of 'new' levels, hahahahaha.
    The nostalgia is overwhelming.

    I had access to one of these machines with 40mb Miniscribe HDD back in the early 1990s. The best things about the machine were the moulded top plastic cover that could securely house the base of the Amstrad monitor, and the volume control for the internal beeper speaker. Never saw these features on any other machine.

      Absolutely right. Strangely, these two very simple features you mention were not common at all...

      Not mention the monitor used to hide the 4AA batteries to store the cmos settings, strangely you had to go into the dos prompt and type Setup to get onto the cmos settings lol

    I used to have this PC, I used it to death, I have great memories programming basic and playing games on it

    Played the shit out of it, mostly CIV, Commander Keen, the first Dune game... sadly I only had PC speaker sound and a monochrome monitor... now it collects dust at my parents' attic...

      Your're lucky to still have it, I needed to buy mine again after losing it. Played the shit out of it too :)

    En plus d'être fonctionnel, ton matériel est dans un état impeccable. J'ignore si c'est l'image qui donne cette impression, mais tout ceci semble (pour ainsi dire) neuf !
    C'est un plaisir, en tout cas, de (re)découvrir ces témoins de l'histoire de l'informatique personnelle. :)

      C'est vrai que je l'entretiens bien, on s'y attache à ces petites choses. Merci pour ton retour!

    i was given one of these in the early 2000s in full working order, unfortunately a while later i had to store it outside under a tarpaulin and it eventually got damp damaged, ruining the hard and floppy drives, i stripped it out and kept the motherboards but dumped the case(cant remember if i kept the keyboard)i recently rediscovered the boards and might try to see if it still works, problem is i think the keyboard protocol is 'custom' so a normal pc one wont work... ??

    • @RetroDream
      @RetroDream  Год назад +1

      Absolutely, it's a custom protocol keyboard and mouse. But you can find these separately without too much trouble. Anyway you should keep it, since they belong to museums ;)
      Great machines.

      @@RetroDream i think it used the same mouse as the pc1512/1640? i have an original of those plus a CPC branded replacement, luckily , still havent found the keyboard ...i found the hard drive controller card that was in it and tried it in another ISA PC, with a 'loose/untested' old drive i got from a car boot sale and amazingly working ok

    • @RetroDream

    Perhaps do you use a differenti VGA card instead of the One built in in the motherboard?

      Why would you think so?

      I just use the built-in one. And anyway, the PC was stolen by a dishonest repair shop. Awful.

    Is this a good machine for DOS gaming?

    • @RetroDream
      @RetroDream  2 года назад +1

      Sure it is, most of my DOS games were played on this

    • @SimonSideburns
      @SimonSideburns 2 года назад +2

      As long as the games ran on a 286 then yes, it's a good machine.
