Learn How to Plant an Argan Seed with HAF

In this video Hajiba Boumasmar, High Atlas Foundation (HAF) Program Coordinator, and Hassan Ait Ba, Caretaker at HAF's Imgdal Nursery, teach us the proper steps for planting an #argan seed.
Along with the IMAGINE #empowerment program, argan trees are an important aspect of HAF's efforts to increase #womenempowerment and financial security in #Morocco. More than half of the world's #arganoil comes from Morocco, whose arid climate is ideal for growing #argantrees.
In 2018 HAF partnered with FRÉ Skincare-HAF to plant 2,000 argan trees for the 40-women Izouran cooperative of Essaouira’s Smimou municipality. This provided not only income and environmental benefits, but also training workshops and school supplies for their children (helping combat high dropout rates still pervasive in rural areas).
FRÉ and HAF significantly expanded their sustainability initiative in 2019 by planting 2,600 argan trees with three additional women’s cooperatives in Essaouira and 13,000 argan seeds in one of HAF's community-managed nurseries in the Marrakech region.
In 2020, this increased to 33,000 seeds that will eventually be transplanted to the women’s #cooperatives’ properties this #planting season.
To successfully translate this partnership into more action, FRÉ and HAF are planning to help the cooperatives with FRÉ’s direct purchase and export of their argan #cosmetic products. These actions will certainly have a very positive impact on the women’s economic level and also promote #businessexpansion and create more #jobopportunities.

I was given argon seeds when I was in Marrakech 6 months ago. I soaked them 4 days, but nothing happened, so I am going to plant them. I hope they grow! Maybe I was given bad or old seeds. I have a few left. I will try again. I like growing rare exotica and unusual trees and plants. Las Vegas NV USA Thanks for posting the video!

Believe it or not I ordered Argan seeds and have got them to grow and survive the winters in Pennsylvania zone 6. Most say they will not grow, but one must remember in Morocco you have the Atlas Mountains where Argan trees grow and survive, and it gets down to -20°F in the winter.

Good morning. It was said the whole seeds are soaked for 3 to 4 days in the shade and then placed in sunlight. Could I ask, how many days in the shade and then how many days in sunlight. Also, when the seeds are placed on trays, are they still soaked in water? and are they in the sun or shade? and for how long? Thank you very much this excellent information.

! We've asked our tree-planting team to clarify the steps. Here's their response:
➢ Put the argan seeds in the water for 3 or 4 days, until the emergence of the small Roots.
➢ Fill the Trays with the compost and peat (la tourbe)
➢Put the seeds directly in the center of the compost.
➢ Regular watering of cuttings.
All these steps have to be in the greenhouse until the seeds became sapling then we can move the trays out to adapt to the sun
.
