I messed up 🤦🏼‍♀️ as some of you pointed out I forgot to also talk about the controversy regarding Nikes treatment of women athletes (so dumb of me for forgetting that topic) . I know it goes without saying that women in sports is one of my biggest passions in life so you know how close that topic is to my heart. Disappointed in myself for forgetting that 🤦🏼‍♀️ That being said, it such an important topic it deserves its own video. Which now im VERY inspired to work on! Im invisioning a video about the populairty of womens sports & treatment of female athletes. Please comment any specific moments that come to mind for you! Ex the crazy pressures placed on nike runners, the populairty of cailtin clark, nike penalizing women for getting pregnant (doesnt have to be limited to nike). Etc!
Thanks to one of the comments recommendations I’m now reading “the longest race” by Kara Goucher & Mary Pilon that talks about this topic, if you want to learn more join me in reading it!

Fun fact I grew up in Portland Oregon which is where one of their headquarters is at and not only were their female athletes treated like shit but it became a regular thing in the newspaper to see that horrible predatory stuff was happening at the training camps they would run and my friends that worked on the inside it really depended on your department but it had a lot of gross frat issues. I personally worked for a third party company that was contracted to do the customer service for Nike they weirdly had a lot of sales for custom color shoes in the 2010s, at least I remember color issues being like 80% of support tickets plus the shipping issued in the USA we're awful

The biggest thing that Nike did to pushed people away in Europe was that they kept producing less of the popular shoes while increasing the price dramatically (on all their products). White Air Force 1's were super popular here and suddenly they became super hard to buy and the cost almost doubled. Literally within months everyone started to wear New Balance.

"Nike went woke" has to be one of the funniest lines, because they've been 'soft blocked' in my family since the 90's after they got exposed for using children in sweatshops... what was particularly visceral was a kid sewing a soccer ball in South Asia and my Mum refused to buy Nike for me or my sister. I think they more recently got a factory closed by the Chinese government for sweatshop like conditions. I mean... if the Chinese government saw your factory operation and went "oh, that's a bit much" you don't really get to call yourself woke because you put Colin Kaepernick in a commercial. Not that clothes manufacturing all over the World isn't horrific. I still remember the factory collapse in Bangladesh and all the major brands use some of the lowest paid labour on the planet and then jack the prices up for the Western consumer market... but yeah. Just my experience with Nike... also from a European perspective, Adidas always had a bit more of an edge here because they produced the soccer kits. Now Puma are getting in on that market. So yeah, over the pond Nike always had a bit of that 'cool American' factor, our home grown athletes were going to be in Umbro, Dunlop, Adidas or Puma... and more recently Gym Shark.

    • @dempseydoodle2010

I remember the big Nike sweatshop scandal in the 90s as well. I got all my sports gear from Adidas when we could afford it or a knock off brand if we couldn't. As an adult the only thing I get from them is my sports bras but only because they are the only compression bras I can find that don't have any extra padding, of hooks, clips, extra plastic bits. The shoes have always been to expensive and underwhelming for me.

    • @PostingCringeOnMain
      @PostingCringeOnMain 13 дней назад

@@Updog89 well, that's the deal with the devil we all make because I don't think there are any, but The North Face, Patagonia, Lulu and Gym Shark lean closer to less exploitative labour practices with transparency in the supply chain and favouring factories with labour rights certifications, meanwhile Nike, Adidas, New Balance and Puma are all shady but "getting better" as more attention was brought on them. Fact is, Nike just got the spotlight because they were the major player at the time but the entire fashion industry is rife with horrific labour conditions with some of the lowest paid workers in the developing World. Low dollar cost here comes at a higher human exploitation cost elsewhere. I personally buy/wear Puma, but it's really just picking my poison. They support a living wage but only in the final production stages of products, their production chain is transparent to the FLA (fair labour association) and they rate fairly highly in the FTI (fashion transparency index) ... which is about the same as Nike except Nike don't quite meet the same standards on pay and conditions and don't have production processes accredited by the FLA. For the worst affected people in their supply chains, it probably makes no difference which brand you buy tbh... and the real reason I wear Puma shoes is because they just fit my feet the best... either Puma or Asics. For the moment I've really been digging the Nitro Foam.

I'll be honest, for me, Lululemon has not managed to outmarket/outinfluence my bad opinion of them: They don't make clothes for MY body type and they became like every other company - making stuff in cheap markets and still selling at the same price. When a company starts local and then decided to go make things in China for 1% of the cost while keeping the exact same prices = You've lost me forever. I used to be a huge fan of their bags (they used to be so original and interesting) because as I said - they don't make things for me, they never have.

Those shops were curating incredible test and try events and activations with all of their competitors. Many of these shops also have their own run clubs. EVERY reputable vendor was dogging Nike's quality and price, encouraging runner to try Saucony, Adidas and New Balance. Nike stores provide low inventory of running ad performance products which. Their sizing isn't reliable either. Too many pain points with no pay off.

I worked at Sport Chek as a cashier from 2007-2013, I definitely saw the trends change. Clothing really shifted from Nike to Under Armour (tbh Under Armour was doing really cool things in those days). Streetwear shoes shifted to Adidas and Puma. I don't think Nike was keeping up. And what really solidified it for me was when team sponsored products were shifting to Adidas and Under Armour. Nike got boring. And Nike started to have bad takes around sponsoring women, and mothers. That had an impact on the trends that just one cashier in one store in southern Ontario was seeing.

As a runner, the thing that was a real gotcha moment for me was when you said that people started visiting local running shops and buying shoes that fit them, instead of shoes the pros were wearing. I usually have six pairs of shoes in my rotation, retire between six and eight pairs per year, and I'm always on the lookout for something new. And yet, from close to 80 pairs of shoes I retired, I only had a single pair of Nikes. In Europe, none of the running stores I visited carried any Nikes. I'm close to one store manager, and he told me that Nike would not let the store sell their shoes; that their strategy was only to sell direct. So, what I'm seeing in my peer group is that the only people buying Nike shoes are those who purchased a previous model somewhere, liked it, and keep on buying the new models. At least in the niche market of runners who like to try before they buy, Nike is committing suicide.

Hi Keltie. Great video but there are a few considerations that need to be made. Maybe you're too young, but Nike always sells their products in outlets and discount shops. For at least 25 years, that I can remember. This is not a new tactic that depreciates the brand value. I actually attribute it to being less dominant in the pro game - major players switched sponsorship to other brands and that made them become more aspirational/desired. Also, with the democratization of media (aka internet and social media) Nike became too popular, which is not a value attribute in niche culture. Scarcity and exclusivity are now more valued as a way of distiguing yourselves from the piers. While Gen Xers and millennials growing up wanted to be part of a group and belong, Gen Zers want to be different and stand out.

They want a product, they'll go and get it. Trainers: foam. Speedwork: carbon plate. Recovery: cushion. The only thing Nike has got going for it is the looks of their shoes, but man oh man, the way their products are unreliable really tests a consumer's patience.

Hey! I really enjoy your videos! I just wanted to share a quick note-phrases like ‘low on the totem pole’ can unintentionally appropriate Indigenous culture and misrepresent the significance of totem poles, which actually don’t have a ranking system based on position. A great alternative might be something like ‘lower ranked’ instead! Just thought I’d share that with you.

Thank you so much for sharing this! That’s one of those phrases that’s just been around for so long you forget to stop and think about the meaning behind it. Would never intentionally want to appropriate anybody or group of people. Eye opening for sure, and won’t be using it anymore thank you for letting me know🫶

If Adidas could change their iconic logo to somewhat innovative and minimalist

And their logo and stripes is quite huge a statement sometimes while wearing their clothing

Resellers and lack of quality and loss of identity really hurt Nike. Also a lot of legacy brands like Nike are relying on popularity from 20 and 30 years ago before a lot of present customers were even born.

I might be very alone in this, but I miss parts of old Lululemon. I kind of wish they’d bring back the fun colors and patterns on the waistbands. Or does anyone else associate 2007-2012 Lulu with a level of granola-ness? I just feel like some of their marketing to trends and a lot of neutrals has made them seem kind of cold

When I was pregnant, finding cute maternity clothes (in stores) is nonexistent. Target was pathetic.
I have a special place in my heart because Lululemon’s clothes are so cute and were cropped and great quality regardless of how much my body grew and changed. I felt so cute wearing anything I bought from Lululemon. I never purchased from them before because of the price. But when they consistently create clothes that fit women’s various body types well, I will continue to support with my wallet.

A fitness influencer marketing campaign like gymshark would honestly help. Also the athletes today just don’t seem to have that cool factor like the 90s and early 2000 athletes. Nike had Jordan, Kobe, Serena, Ken Griffey Jr., Deion, Andre Agassi, Tiger and Lebron. After Lebron retires what athlete are people really flocking to and looking at as someone cool on and off the field or court?

I was recently looking for running shorts and sports bra’s and I am put off Nike for 3 reasons.
    1. Adidas have the parley collection and more sustainable options.
    2. Some people wont like this but I don’t want men selling me sports bra’s, all I can think is Dylan mulvaney doing the jumping around and it still feels insulting
    3. Following on from that the way they have treated their female athletes around pregnancy
I didn’t even know about the sweatshops 😮

It was interesting watching this from an older person's perspective (I'm 53). I don't really pay attention to what influencers wear. Influencers are relatively new and mainly in their 20s. I can't relate to the typical Gym Shark athlete or person (I'll admit I'm not the most trendsetting person either). I don't look at Nike first for a few reasons. As a runner, their 'every day' shoes just don't fit me as well as other brands. They have great step in comfort, but cause me issues with running. Second, I'm not a fan of the way they have treated their women (and male) athletes (e.g. Kara Goucher and Alberto Salazar).

My breaking point was how they treated pregnant athletes. I stopped buying after the controversy and thought their attempt at maternity athletic gear was a cash grab and phony.

As someone who is not really into sports, I think NIKE just inflated prices rather than meet the demand. Like everything from shoes to clothing, there's not much product on the shop floor but the price inflated by 40%. I remember Air Forces were £45, and high-impact sports bras were £20, now those shoes are £95+ and the bra is like £35. In addition on the shop floor, there are only have 1-3 items in I would say size 10 up. Which I would argue is a lot of people sizes. I can get double the quantity of other brands for the same quality. I also get more colour options. And don't need to spend hour walking around trying to find items that fit. Also if I can't find things that fit and was flattering when I was fat, why would I buy from there when Im thinner.
I also think everything looks the same. I haven't seen new designs, just colour waves of the same shoe.
I think Nike need to have a different name division in Nike that runs separately. That focuses on different things. Brands in different industries do it all the time. I don't know how it would work, but as the brand is so broad now it may stop the bottleneck.

Their Clothes for mens running is top notch, but they have never really made a good running shoe, loved the style in the 80s-90s, but as a runner they are OFF the table, Asics Brooks Saucony. If at 63 i ever decide to become a pro basketball player i might consider, but even they are uncomfortable.
Asics for the Win, even their clothes has gotten so awesome, just got a running cap, with fur lined and waterproof for the mild rain

Honestly, a big thing I saw was the myopic views of a lot of Americans regarding protest and patriotism. Nike stood by Colin Kapernick so those people got angry and said, "we're not gonna buy your stuff; we're gonna burn the Nike stuff we have." Unfortunately, there are a lot of people like that and even years later, they still have VERY strong reactions about CK and everything related to him, so their grudge against Nike remains too.
I'm sure that the other issues you point out played a part too. You make good points and have great suggestions for their future. I loved Nike back in the day, but haven't been drawn to but Nike gear in years.

The thing with Nike clothes is with the new cheaper clothes the quality is also lacking! Before when you bought Nike you knew what you were getting. But now you never know what you get.
The shoes are simpler to just know, and the shoes are not that different even if they are cheaper than before. But the clothes are crazy different in quality!

Large brands like this can’t respond fast enough to growing trends. I have been wearing zero drop shoes for several years now and have yet to find anything by a major brand that even acknowledges my foot shape. I am not a runner, so I’m not in the market for specialty footwear, but yes, I do need daily shoes that acknowledge my needs and give a good fit. Will someone create a sneaker like product that works for my high arches, wide forefoot, wide feet and my aging joints? I’m making do right now, and it’s fine, but surely there are runners out there with similar needs and preferences, aren’t there?

Nike running started with Bill Bowerman and Prefontaine. But I think the Alberto Salazar scandal tarnished Nike for runners.
I work in college athletics and we are a Nike school. The quality of uniforms is terrible.
As a runner, I prefer Lululemon or Saucony.
