How do the Oilers who were top picks for a cup win have an A when they were bottom barrel for a majority of the first half. They've gotten better for sure but they're a wild card team right now who fired their coach? Also, the Stars have one of the most balanced attacks in the NHL and have been in first or within points of first from day 1 and without their #1 goalie for a month.
It's looking at more recent performances (which is FAR more relevant in terms of giving you an idea of how a team is going to perform for the second half of the season). They're about to potentially have a franchise record win streak and are something like 17-3 in their last 20 games (lots of that against very good teams). If you don't think that's A tier you're either clueless, or a leafs fan. Or both. They had a one-off bad streak at the start of the season due to coaching and goaltending that hadn't found it's groove yet - both of which are fixed.
@@enzy6434 No, it's a mid-term grade, just like it says in the title. Not a power ranking. Not a momentum meter. A mid-season grade. Seattle has an 8 game streak, so do they get an A also? Having to fire the Coach and Assistant coach, and send a $5M goalie to the minors does not help you get an A. Overcoming a bad start gets you a B.
As the saying goes..."It's not about how you start, but how you finish". Legit Stanley Cup contenders like Winnipeg, which is where I'm from. And I should add by saying that St.Louis had the worst record in the NHL in Jan. the year they won the cup, which reinforces the not about how you start line.

Its because this list is really just about the last month or so. If it were based off the first 41 games Oilers would be in B. Oilers were cup favorites and expected to be top of the division. They're currently 4th and in a wildcard spot. Not sure how that deserves an A.
I’m a downright fanatical Oilers fan and I agree. This streak has been amazing, but they dug themselves a very deep hole at the start of the season. I’d say B, but I wouldn’t blink at a C.
I don't think you're understanding this tier list. It's effectively predicting level of play for the second half of the season, and a 17-3 record over 20 games along with finally having consistent goaltending indicates A tier in terms of the second half of the season performance - not B tier. What you're effectively saying is that the oilers should be B tier and are trending the same trajectory as Seattle etc, which is absolutely not the case. They are definitely trending significantly better then all B tier teams.
@@enzy6434 I think you’re assigning this understanding in an effort to justify the Oilers placement but nowhere in the video does Shannon say that’s how the tier list works, and the video is literally titled grading teams at the half way mark, so I don’t think what you’ve said is accurate at all. This is about their first half of the season, and based on that, they don’t belong in A
Hard to get anything going with 32nd ranked goaltending and the bevy of injuries that have compiled for the Devils. Hamilton lost for the season, Meier, Hischier, Hughes, and Palat all having missed at least a month, Haula missed a handful of games, Siegenthaler out at least a month or two with a broken foot... The Devils just can't catch a break. Yet despite all of that, they're still in the hunt. They're a goalie and semi-healthy line-up away from going on a run.
I don't understand how the devils have the 28th hardest schedule, but also have the most back-to-backs. I feel like having the most back to back means you have a pretty tough schedule.
NJ is ONLY 3-9 verses TOP 10 teams they've been under performing and just lost to Habs in regulation tonight... But yea they've had like 9 b2b games that's crazy... especially when u look at the Bruins who hardly ever play b2b unless the other team has too.. 😆 by the way Boston has the EASIEST schedule and are ONLY 4 and 4 against TOP 10 how the hell they only played 8 games vs top 10 ??
@THG, I'm glad you put the Blues at a C because I remember when we were at the start of the season, not much was expected of the Blues. So, based on initial expectations, performance to date (one game an A, next game an F, rinse and repeat) and schedule difficulty, a "C" is where they belong. I do disagree with the C- bit though, but that could be simply because I'm a homer. 😉
Throughout my schooling, any grade up to and including a 49 was an F, with everything 50 and above a pass. Throughout undergrad letter grades were also used, E not among them.
I was fully expecting you to give the ducks an F. We did have a 9-6 start thanks to a lot of comeback wins. Injuries have plagued the ducks this year but this just exposes the ducks really bad depth. Already looking forward to trade deadline and the draft to see who we get. Thanks THG for the content!!
The Blackhawks I would put at D. I think with having over 10 players from original rosters out with injuries and still playing many close games they are doing good. They only have 1 defensemen they had played for over a year currently playing.
Thanks THG for showing us some love, seems everyone always dismisses us so readily, and what an amazing 9th win in a row tonight beating LA with 0.7 seconds left in OT 😊
I was confused by the "strength of schedule" but it seems like that is only looking at the opponents, which means obviously San Jose has the hardest if everyone is better than them. Really it should take into account home vs away games so far, back to back games and long travel / days off in between.
It takes into account that not all teams have met each other yet either, and that some divisions are weaker than others, which matters because teams play more divisional games. But yeah I doubt home/away etc is taken into account.
Take a look at Boston you'll see why their #1 their schedule has been unbelievably EASY 8 games vs TOP 10 and their only 4 and 4. They play Hawks SJ Columbus twice each already 2nd half coming they going to pay for this easy schedule somewhere 😊
I've watched about every shift of the Flyers this season. They are an 'A' to me on this season's performance alone but that's more relative to how much better they are playing this year rather than last. I can see them beating any team in the league in the playoffs if the stars align!
"See they're fading" since this video they've beaten Minnesota, Winnipeg and Dallas and are only two points behind the Rangers for 1st in the Metropolitan. Do I expect them to win the Cup? No. But I'm going to enjoy the unexpected ride. Jonesy, Briere and Tortorella have seemed to hit on something. Especially the way they handled the Cutter situation and then Torts coming after the media and getting Hayes's back.
Confused how the Oilers make an A with the consistently BRUTAL start they had and the Avs get a B because of a small slump in the 3rd grouping of 10 games? They are all but tied for the top of the division and have led it the entire time.
This list is extremely recency biased and not really based off the first 41 games as a whole. Oilers were cup contenders at season start and are currently in a wildcard spot. How is that deserving of an A? If this was truly about the first half Oilers should be in B
calgary is on fire right now, minus the 2 recent losses we have been winning in dominant fashion lately. Coleman is rolling right now. sherengovich has been a solid sniper. Hubedeau and lindholm are lighting up. we have an insane penalty kill and Markstrom between the pipes has been playing elite goaltending since he's come back from the broken finger.
The Oilers will be an A if they work their way up to the top of the division and stay there. But there’s no way they deserve an A right now considering their awful start and the fact they had to fire their coach, PLUS the hugeeee expectations they had before the season started. They’re still in a wild card spot, they’re fourth in the Pacific. The Knights had a great start, they’re on a horrible skid right now, but still above 10th overall, dealing with a ton of injuries, and they’re a C? I don’t often disagree with you but you gave some funky grades here.
The Blues to me are in a better spot at this time than I thought they would have been with the little Armstrong did in the off season after exploding the team at the dead line. These has beens are keeping us close. Hope some changes on the ice are on the way. The change in coach (still mad) at least fired up Kyrou, just hope that last.
As an Avs fan, I’m use to somewhat semi pro production D lines. But the lack of physical consistency with our D is just all over the charts. Idk the exact number, but how many comeback wins do we have? Is it nice we’re doing good? Yeah. But can we keep that attitude going into the playoffs and succeed? Not likely.
Our Hockey Guy talking about that letter "E" not being used in grade school like it's been around since the first Civil War here in The Land of the Free Guns. Shoot last time I saw an "E" on my report card it followed with "xpulsion."
Wow, generous grading. Tough to factor in expectations and performance for a grade. But as always I enjoyed the video even though I disagree a little bit with some of the grades.
Primary school in Hawai'i, we had E for excellent, S for satisfactory, and I want to say F for failing, but it's been half a century since then for me. Intermediate and Secondary schools were all ABCDF grading with F being failing during the year.
I was in middle school and high school in the US during the mid and late 1970s. The grading system was tougher and simpler than what you had. A was 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D 60-69 E 50-59 and F below 50. There were Es at year end and it meant that you did pass ( I know. I had an E in 8th or 9th grade French and passed the course) There was no "grading on a curve". I do suspect with the dumbing down of standards, it is closer to or possibly even looser than what you had and in the US, grading on a curve definitely exists.
As a blues fan a “C” is definitely fair however I’d say they should not be in conversation for a “D” at all because they’re completely meeting expectations. They’re the first or second team out of the wild card which is exactly where I think everyone saw them being so just giving my two sense that they’re not amazing but any stretch of the imagination but they’re right where they should be in the “retooling” process.
I feel like for teams where there were no expectations to start with, a category called just "Present" would work. Chicago? Yeah, they showed up this season. Sharks? Also participated.

The explanation for the Oilers and Avs was ridiculous.
Great rankings and explanation 👍👍
That Ducks jersey though 👍💪👌🤘👏

Remember everyone saying the Sens and Sabers were supposed to "take the next step" this season 🤣
Shannon perfected the clickbait thumbnail not only with the teams, but the classic look off to the side 😂
Good grade for The Caps. Rookie coach, injuries, and an aging lineup - hopefully they will continue to progress
if i could change anything on the board, i'd put the oilers at C.
Firing a coach after going 3-9-1 at the start of the season should not warrant a A.
3rd in the league and the avs got a B? Damn we have high expectations.
First tier list in my YT feed that doesn't have an S tier..
Since the launch of YT
Makes me remember life before YT and I feel old.
Jets are an A+ at the midpoint for two reasons: a) expectations, and 2) a 31-game streak giving up 3 or less goals.
The Oilers should be a B. You can't just pretend that the horrible start did not happen.
Yup. If I get a 50 on my first exam then a 100 the next time, my grade is a 75, not a 100.
@@GizmoBeach But what about a retest and extra credit? They certainly earned it.
Reppin my Ducks, cheers !! Nice video
As a Sharks fan I’m just imagining Bettman giving us the 3rd overall pick while trying to keep a straight face.
If the Edmonton and Florida train wrecks get As, then the Avs should, too. We have Hart, Vezina, and Norris candidates on our team
So
Obviously you must not watch much hockey. Because florida is one of the top four teams in the NHL and are top 3 in defense in the NHL. Oh, and by the way, we smoked Colorado 8 to 4 on the road.
@@mikejoerger3333 The only reason why they're so close in the Atlantic is because Boston sucks. The only teams I'll agree should receive an A are the Jets and Canucks. That's it. Avs should be in the A group, and the Oilers and Panthers should be in the C group. I'd put the Maple Leafs WAY ahead of the Panthers.
Nylander is worth signing. Over paying Tavares and not re-signing Hyman was a hockey mistake but a marketing success. MLSE is not in the business of winning Stanley Cups. MLSE is in the business of selling a product. Leafs are now 24th in regulation wins. Enjoy the core 4 and their exciting brand of hockey and enjoy the regular season. Your channel is so good. Thanks for the daily dose of hockey information.
You say that like winning hockey games and selling a product are mutually exclusive things.
Leafs are made for the regular season. Lots of scoring. Period. They are not made for a cup run. @@jordspectre
Soft team - Nylander is poison. No team will ever win a cup with Nylander, soft and selfish.
for us in the states we use A+,A,A- same for B,C,D, and just an F if it was failing and this went for assignments tests and overall grades
Fair assessments. \m/
The Oilers over the teams in B seems like the wrong call to me personally
Half of devils away games are bus trips
16 B2Bs is still brutal.@@bgone8854
Also his SOS is likely based on opponents points % which is easy to quantify.
After the game philly had earlier tonight against Dallas, I'd give them an A+ at this point.
Yesss Shannon. Great thumbnail. Had to double take 😂
Throughout my schooling, any grade up to and including a 49 was an F, with everything 50 and above a pass. Throughout undergrad letter grades were also used, E not among them.
A is 90-100, B is 80-89, C is 70-79, D is 60-69, F is 59 or lower. F means you are failing, anything higher is passing.
I've been out of the school system for over 20 years but even then, 50% was a passing grade. 49 and lower was an F
One of the only ranking videos i have some strong differing opinions on!!!!
I'm a Sabres fan. I think F is OK. Also appreciate the B for the Caps - since I used to live there. Shannon, you are the man.
its all shannon fault. that carry over curse!! lets go bflo!
San Jose schedule would be a lot easier if they could play some games against the Sharks.
so the avs are on the same tier as the kraken, preds, caps, and yotes...?
The Blackhawks I would put at D. I think with having over 10 players from original rosters out with injuries and still playing many close games they are doing good. They only have 1 defensemen they had played for over a year currently playing.
That is the strangest grading system I’ve ever heard
We didn't have an E in our schools in the Midwest USA
They play Hawks SJ Columbus twice each already
2nd half coming they going to pay for this easy schedule somewhere 😊
And how the heck they play the Wings 4 times already ? and Ducks also twice by the way
that thumbnail was hilarious lmao, i was like "SENS A TIER WTF??"
Agree...Oilers started atrocious ... Als way better...coming from an Oilers fan😂😂
Yeah my point excactly! I'm not mad with the B for avs since we can improve a lot but to have Edmonton higher then Avs makes zero sense to me
Yeah, his Avs grade made 0 sense. They're also doing all of this while trying to fill Landy's shoes. They're doing more with less.
This list is extremely recency biased and not really based off the first 41 games as a whole. Oilers were cup contenders at season start and are currently in a wildcard spot. How is that deserving of an A? If this was truly about the first half Oilers should be in B
@@jeffe2267lol you can’t use ladeskog as an excuse for the avs bad stretches. He’s been out for 2 years. 🤣
calgary is on fire right now, minus the 2 recent losses we have been winning in dominant fashion lately.
In alberta from 02-14 i just had percentage grades on my report cards. Letter grades only for gym
Damn I would have loved that grading system growing up... For me As were 100-90, Bs 89-80, Cs 79-70, Ds 69-65, Fs 64-0.
So an E grade was like hockey .500? Crazy grading scale. Where I grew up A=>93, filters down then to F
Shannon loves the Wings and holds a great amount of gratitude for the Hronek trade 😊
Not likely.
As a wings fan I’m glad their schedule is going to get hard. For whatever reason they play down to “easier” teams and play up to the better teams.
Honestly the Oilers are somewhere in B.
They had an F to start the year and then turned on the Jets and have had an A+ since
Oilers with an A… they are in a tenuous wildcard spot, and you have them with an A…
Thx for posting
That was generous for the Leafs.
B is fair. I still don’t think we can win it all without Landy, but hoping they prove me wrong of course
I wouldn't put the Oilers in an A slot at all... not after that start. A B would have worked.
Nothing makes me happier than THG decked out in Ducks gear
Weird
He's just kissing up to the Anaheim fans before his vacation.
I'd love to see Wall in another game for the Wild. First NHL game and missing so many of our D set him up for failure.
for me it was A - 80-100% B - 70-79% C - 60-60% D - 50-59% F- 49% and below
Our Hockey Guy talking about that letter "E" not being used in grade school like it's been around since the first Civil War here in The Land of the Free Guns. Shoot last time I saw an "E" on my report card it followed with "xpulsion."
When you get a bunch of E’s,you’re F’d.
How does San Jose have the easiest schedule from here? They don’t even get to play San Jose!
He got me with the thumbnail haha. Go Stars!
Otter played fantastic last night against LA, back to his normal self max
As a blues fan a “C” is definitely fair however I’d say they should not be in conversation for a “D” at all because they’re completely meeting expectations. They’re the first or second team out of the wild card which is exactly where I think everyone saw them being so just giving my two sense that they’re not amazing but any stretch of the imagination but they’re right where they should be in the “retooling” process.
If anything they’re slightly stronger than a lot of people expected. I might argue a B for them.
I feel like for teams where there were no expectations to start with, a category called just "Present" would work.
Chicago? Yeah, they showed up this season.
Sharks? Also participated.
I appreciate you grading my Yotes that high, I expected a C at most
I mean that’s what they deserve. Then he gives st Louis a C minus when both teams have similar depth and the exact same record.
@@MikeHoncho610 that was a bit off for sure
@@Heavymetalpunk he’s always been very biased against the Blues. I’m assuming it’s because they usually beat his Canucks and then knocked out the bruins in the SCF in 2019.
@@MikeHoncho610it could be because blues had bigger expectations which would hurt their grade more.
@@jeffreydean5112 they didn’t though. They traded away a ton of key players before the season. Their only notable signing was Kevin Hayes…I think they’ve exceeded expectations this year
So the grades A means Above and Beyond. B means Beyond Average. C means Satisfactory. D means Insufficient effort. And F means Failure.
A few weeks ago I would’ve given the Islanders a B grade but since that drubbing they took from Pittsburgh before Christmas they haven’t been playing well. Hopefully they can turn it around. Lambert is messing with the lines tonight against Toronto, so we’ll see what happens.
Looking for an update on the Red Wings after the last 7-day heater - has to be worth a bump up to B
is that still the system in most of Canada? when I went to school an A was 94-99. F was anything below 60. GPA also couldn't go above 4.0.
Trolled by the thumbnail hahaha, good one!
Flyers should be an A+ 3rd lowest odds to make the playoffs this year, and they are killing it with this group of youngsters
Wait, is 85%+ being an A and so on a Canadian thing, or did that just stop being the case at some point, or did THG just go to a weird school? What's going on there? I've never heard of an A being anything other than 90-100.
There has never been an E, dude, you seem to be the same as age as me. The grade you are thinking about I many incomplete. I agree with your grade for the Kraken.
Considering the upheaval in Calgary the last two seasons , and coming into this season with a rookie coach , rookie GM and the distraction of players who said they weren’t going to re-sign , the Flames are doing better than expected and deserve a B grade.
Give it up for Vancouver. Unbelievable we never would of predicted it.
Flyers were projected as a bottom 5 team and they’re top 10. Easy A and I’m proud of this team. Torts for Jack Adams.
you had E’s in school? that’s wild. A is 90-99, B is 80-89, C is 70-79, D is 60-69, and F is 59 and lower
Okay am i the only one that heard thay three teams have the 31st ranked strength of schedule for the rest of the year?
E….must be an Abbotsford thing. I grew up in Canada around the same time as the Hockey Guy but can’t say that l recall any E option on the report cards.
