Micky and Ken are the best! I watch as many games from as many broadcasts as I can throughout the season and they’re still the best team that play off each other very well!
PRO: When the broadcast shows "Shots on Net" on their HUD. CON: Digital boards that not only change, but move during the play in any direction whilst the play is going up the ice.
Ken and Mick are the best in the business hands down, I am definitely biased but truly believe it. I would pay extra to get some sort of feed where the on ice mics are always on and you hear absolutely everything that is said during the game.
NHL has already spread out all the games between 7 different streaming services so they might as well add another where you can hear all the hot mics. Plus it would be nice to have all the games in one place. I would 100% pay for that.
I fuckin love Mickey Redmond. I've been listening to his stories, his commentating through the good years and the bad and the man is a professional. He is the model; the mold for color commentating in hockey. His voice is a cultural touchstone for Detroiters and I certainly miss him when he's not calling a game. I make it a point to listen to each time he is on the air. I know he is getting up there in age and the hockey world will be severely diminished when he calls it a day. I'll be devastated for sure. Cherish what you have because before you know it, it's over. Now for the other side. I do not fucking care about gambling. I do not care about the odds. I do not care about your fantasy team. I do not care about any of that bullshit. If you want to burn your money in that crucible that's your choice. I simply do not fucking care. Calling the game based on gambling diminishes the sport. It ruins the enjoyment of the sport. It ruins how the sport is covered by the media. It ruins how the sport is communicated from the fans/media to the players and coaches. It is a cancer on the sport. Now with Fanduel handling a shitload of regional games it has only gotten worse. Yeah there is a lot of contractual need to push desperate people to start gambling, I get it. They gotta get paid, no matter how much integrity or credibility is lost, At least with the more seasoned PBP and color announcers they focus on the actual game and not the BS with gambling.
Capital *R* Ridiculous. Promoting a basic human character weakness that drives many to bankruptcy, and ruining their lives, and households is a disservice to fans of the game.
Started watching Hockey during the 83-84 season at the age of 8. When Dave Strader came on board, then Mickey (came back), I was in heaven. Harry Neale and Bob Cole were amazing, and I love Ken Daniels, but I miss Dave Strader and was crushed when he passed away. I followed him out of market because every game he called took me back to being 10 years old again. It will be a sad day when Mickey retires. LETS GO RED WINGS!
“Stories during play” is my biggest pet peeve. Was watching a Vegas game the other night, one member of the broadcast crew had just had a grandkid and they would not stop talking about it for several minutes, during play.
The biggest problem I find with talking about the odds so much is when you have someone who is addicted to gambling constantly betting and constantly losing because it’s all over the place. It must be very hard on those people and their families. It needs to change.
Been a Wings fan in Indiana since i was 14. Didn't get to hear Mickey and Ken till a few years ago. Feel ripped off i didn't get to hear them my whole life.
Have been lucky enough to have watched Mick since he was broadcasting with Dave Strader (RIP). He’s a dandy and a real beauty if you ever get the chance to meet him.
One of my favorite moments from IM college hockey was a defender retreating trying to fend off an opponent and he screams "One coming on my back hard!" as he dumps it to the other defender. The whole rink went silent, everyone kinda of glides to a stop, and the someone on the bench yelled "Aaron, what the f*ck"
"He needs to learn how to say Jokiharju" had me laughing, still remember that from a few days ago. Rob Ray can be super hilarious too. "Rob, how do you feel about being inducted into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame?" Rob - "Yeah it's uhh.. it's pretty cool."
I remember during one playoff run, Mickey was the only commentator who would ask Bettman the hard questions - so much so that when they had their 1-on-1 Bettman said that his staff roleplayed as Mickey to prepare him for the interview
From the baseball world, the Cleveland Indians had a pitcher in the early 1910's named Gene Krapp, and the newspaper headlines the day after he won a close game read: "Krapp Works Way Out Of Tight Hole". This may be urban legend but I've heard the story many times over the years.
After the final game of the season last year I was devastated that the Wings won it and still didn't make it to the playoffs but Mick's laughter at the irony of it all made me feel a little better

Been watching Mickey since his days as a player here in Detroit. Started his broadcasting career in 1979 on ON-TV, a Detroit subscription channel. Along with Budd Lynch, Bruce Martyn, Sid Abel, Dave Strader and Ken Daniels, we Red wing fans have truly been blessed with outstanding broadcasters.
Favoite Mickey moment was when he was working for CBC and Claude Lemieux was lying on the ice faking a bad injury, Mickey said "He's gotta get up, they're on the power play." Lol!,,,,,, Then he explained that Lemieux had a reputation for pretending to be hurt.
Phil Esposito is up there, too. He’s like a hockey version of Ron Santo (RIP). John Forslund and JT Brown are what made me a Seattle fan. Adding Eddie Olczyk was a brilliant move that makes Kraken trio my favorite current broadcast team.
I'm a Devils fan and so many of these resonate with me. The interviews during play, story time, not knowing when to be quiet, constant gambling talk(I don't even watch pre-games or intermissions anymore), and I do feel like on national broadcasts, especially against the Rangers, the talk around the Rangers is always more positive(maybe just my bias but they are the more popular team).
Since i only have basic cable, i can’t watch the Canadiens games in French on Saturday night, so i listen to the radio broadcast. This accomplishes a number of things for me: i don’t have to listen to gambling ads or odds during the game, the announcers always describe the game play, and i get to hear French descrptions of the games since i’m francophone. The only downside, of which i am used to now, is the 25 second delay between the game play and the description (it’s internet radio, probably why). But i’ll take that deal any day now…
I'm a Sheffield Steelers fan and when we started playing in Europe in the CHL this season , they had the great idea to mic up coaches on timeouts. Let's just say our coach Aaron Fox is known to have quite a mouth so the awkward silence was hilarious.
Thanks for the video! I prefer a very descriptive play-by-play broadcaster who knows the home and visiting players and a knowledgeable color person who knows the details of the game and its history. I like getting as much info as possible. I don't mind when broadcasters compliment the visiting players for good play.
My thing is with the dumb regional blackouts I know it’s not anything with actually watching the game but like as a fan of a team and the entire league not being able to watch all the games kills the audience that the NHL could be getting
I forgot what production did it, but I watched a game in the past where a camera was almost an eagle eye view above the game. I loved it, wished all games had that option
Yes, we are so blessed to have Ken and Mickey! I hate the switch to FanDuel. Everything is saturated with betting! I'm not sure but I suspect they delay the broadcast a tiny bit because my Red Wings app is ahead of time...maybe so we don't hear swearing. When Mickey passes, both Canada and Michigan will go into a 30 day mourning period. I agree about doing the show from Chris Ozgood's rink.❤ #LGRW!

one thing that i find funny is when broadcasters mess up players names. i once heard a commentator call Alex Barre-Boulet "Ball-Bellow" and it gave me a really good laugh
One thing I like in broadcasts is when the commentator is knowledgeable and can explain why certain stuff is happening when it does. I have learned a lot of interesting stuff during hockey broadcasts that I hadent noticed before about obscure rules that dont come up often or even how broadcasts work behind the scenes. I will give mike johnson a lot of credit in that department, though he is far from perfect the guy knows his stuff and is interesting to listen to. He picks out plays and rule violations instantly. He will suddenly go "oop that was a hand pass" and then play will go on for 60 more seconds before a goal and then suddenly it will get called back for a hand pass. Most commentators arent that astute. Something I hate is how broadcasts handle puck drop. You google an nhl game, it says the game starts at 7, but it doesnt. Puck drop could be at 7:03, or it could be at 7:23. It drives me nuts. This isnt an issue with other sports. If football or basketball says it starts at 7, that ball is usually play by 7:05.
My favorite play-by-play guy ever in any sport EVER is Jim Hughson. I'm not sure where people rank him among sports commentators, but for me, he's one of one. Hope he can return to commentary sometime in the future.
Yeah, and I'd specifically rank Hughson at the top of the list of PxP guys that know EXACTLY when to shut up and let the action speak for itself. John Shorthouse is also high up on that list for me, though I've noticed a few stumbles over the last few years where he could have just kept quiet and let the action run a bit longer. Sometimes the best thing to say, is nothing at all.
I remember one of his double-entendres when he was the #1 guy for CBC. "Finger up the middle". As far as letting the action speak for itself, I think of watching baseball games. Let's face it, there's a lot of dead time in baseball. Good commentators know when to fill that dead time with talk and storytelling, and know when to shut up and let the game breathe.
They are the best. Fun, great chemistry, don't hesitate to point out Sharks mistakes or opposing team good plays, while still definitely being Sharks fans. They are at the top.
national broadcast bias towards big market teams/against non-traditional hockey market teams is so blatantly obvious these days. as a lifelong Dallas stars fan this is abundantly clear when we play teams like Colorado, Chicago, Boston, and Minnesota. it's even more potent during playoffs. I appreciate the Kraken broadcasts; Forslund and Edzo are excellent and dont talk about odds, but do talk about being old and milkshakes. JT Brown also balances out the duo with some more recent NHL experience and some youth.
Filler content, eg “We will return to the broadcast in a moment”. Just show me highlights from other games, or unscripted conversations in the booth, or even the Zamboni driving around the rink.
Governments will soon make the gambling ads go away. Canada always seems to follow the lead of the UK after a few years, and in the UK, gambling ads are not permitted to be aired before a certain time in the evening, typically after kids have gone to bed. Professional athletes are also prohibited from endorsing any gambling sponsor or activity. I imagine the Canadian government will take the same approach eventually.
I agree with the injury thing the Nfl has cut way back on showing player injuries they usually just cut to commercial now when it's a big enough injury I think the Nhl should follow their lead
Got to meet Mickey recently at a wings alum game. He played the entire game. No helmet of course. Met him after the game and had a card of his signed. I was the only one in line over ten years old lol.

Professional athletes are also prohibited from endorsing any gambling sponsor or activity. I imagine the Canadian government will take the same approach eventually.
Yes, *please* .
Red Barronson played too! Only one shift but he made a perfect blind pass.
They had a lengthy interview with the flower during a Wild game recently, as much as I love the Flower, I hated the interruption and distraction
I switched the game during it 😂
I find it hard to believe they were interviewing Guy LaFleur.
I’m a simple man. I see Mickey Redmond. I click
2004 was the worst for how badly ESPN/ABC wanted Calgary to win. We eventually muted the TV and put on the Lightning radio.
Absolutely love the Wild broadcasters. I could listen to them all day.
