Rammstein is my absolute favorite band. Thank you so much for your translation and breakdown. As a paramedic for 15 years, I saw a lot of life and death. I didn’t always know how to process what I saw. This song was so profound and each time I watched the video it’s brought out different emotions. Just an incredible song that transcends all barriers and speaks to us all at our most basic humanity.
I often think about life and this song is just so much in line with my thoughts.Beautiful.I can't get enough of Till's voice.Time to learn another song.
This song has come out just as a close family member of mine is reaching the end of her life. The lyrics are timeless and hit me hard. Thankfully, i do try to cherish every moment, especially the ones she gave me, and hopefully I'm wrong that she is nearing the end. We all need to appreciate what we have, and cherish every moment of happiness no matter how fleeting.
You are who I go to, to understand, not just translate Rammsteins songs. So glad to see you on my timeline again and I cant wait for the new album, and your explanation of the lyrics!
Danke schön for making this videos! It's so good that someone who's native language is german explain the meaning of a frase or a saying that maybe even if you learnt it you never seem to quite grasp
I absolutely love Rammstein and their music. Til is a genius creating his choice of words lyrics and thoughts as he conveys them. Thanks for the work on your channel I really appreciate and enjoy watching and learning.
I'm American and have been listening to ramstien for most of my life atleast 15-20 years of these badass legends. To the point I can sing almost every song word for word with the German accent and still not know what I'm saying cause I only know English. But your video really breaks it down. Thanks brother
Thanks to your videos, I have come to appreciate more and more Rammstein songs. I saw them in Chicago.... What a fantastic show and performance!!! This song was in their setlist... a truly masterpiece! Danke my friend :)
This song came out of nowhere as you said. To me for example it hit very close to home, as I lost my mom 8 month ago. Now being alles allein, ganz allein. Although being mentally tough to hear, it's also what I need to hear.
This is the only video a non German speaker needs to see when listening to Zeit. Well done! The line "Augenblick, verweile doch" is a direct reference to Goethe's Faust. "Werd ich zum Augenblicke sagen: Verweile doch! du bist so schön! Dann magst du mich in Fesseln schlagen, Dann will ich gern zugrunde gehn!"
I found this looking for good translations of Rammstein's song as it has to be one of my favourites, and i have to say you're doing an amazing job both at translating the lyrics and going into a bunch of details. Your channel is the kind of content that will help me get my non-german friends to relate to how great some of the german songs i know are, i don't remember if i ever subbed to someone after just one video but this is definitely the time to do so.
Thanks for another great video! I always appreciate these analysis videos (it’s how I found your channel a couple years ago). It blows my mind how thoughtful, philosophical, and poetic Till gets with his lyrics.
Dave this video is amazing! I got so excited when I saw it on my feed. Thank you so much for making it and your very detailed explanation of the lyrics from your perspective as a native German speaker. Till is definitely a master lyricist. I am trying to learn German and I am also a super Rammstein fan, so your channel is perfect for me!
I have a basic understanding of the German language. One remarkable aspect of this song is that I could get its meaning without much translation especially when paired with the video. And after watching this video, it comes across a brilliant inspired writing that captures the Zeitgeist (pun intended) of the last 2 years when so many have been taken by the pandemic. Perhaps we have taken things too much for granted.
Vielen Dank ❤️
Just a little supplement: As often in Till's lyrics, also in Zeit are allusions to classic German literature, namely to Faust by Goethe (and maybe others?). Some see the ballad as a hidden message that Rammstein will finish its work as a band ("wenn es am schönsten / besten ist, soll man aufhören").
I've come back to this video about a year after first watching it. I realise how much of the philosophy of time I have taken on board into my own life, such as noticing and embracing "Ein jeder kennt den perfekten moment". I recently met up with someone (for the second time who i found extremely attractive), who also loves Rammstein, I quoted that phrase to her. We spent 8 incredible hours together, during which there was a zeit where we were sat in a cove on some rocks overlooking the sea, with my arm around her and her leaning into me, definatly a sense of Unendlichkeit. I was lucky enough to be aware at the time, that this is one of those moments to embrace and enjoy.
Love your vlogs…. Need more help with german sentence stucture. Know any resources to help me learn quicker. I can kind of read der hund und die katze fabel. Easier to read than to speak. Im using duolingo now and listening to plenty of rammstein of course. Thanks
Thank you very much for this. My German level is not very good and I love your analysis of Rammstein lyrics. They are really helping me improve. Great song. Already one of my favorites
Did you know that Laichzeit was supposed to be called Die Zeit? Back in 1995 The Demo was later changed in Laichzeit because It made more sense for the song.
This new Rammstein video appeared in my feed today, but I haven't watched it yet. Why? Because I knew I wanted to come to your channel first to hear your analysis of the lyrics. That's a compliment to you. Hut ab!
Thank you for sharing your perspective and enabling us to learn German as well! I think this song is a masterpiece and Lindemann (and team) have outdone themselves and in my book this is Rammstein's best song since it deals with our existence as Time marches on indifferent to what we have to say or experience. All of us will have to cross that river one day. in the end and who knows we may be just crossing into another dimension of a multiverse universe ( so some of us may be hoping, visiting our loved ones again - but we will never know). As we cross into that other dimension, I hope there will great bands just like Rammstein and people like you that make our world a better and more meaningful existence..... Thank you.
That song BY FAR is their best song I’ve heard from them, don’t want to make it depressing but I had a friend take his own life on March 2nd and 10 days later that song came out and it does make me tear up as I passionately love the song and the lyrics
The lyrics with the sea remind me of the Myth of the river Acheron. That river was believed to be leading to the underworld. The river I mentioned is located in the region of Epirus, Greece.
In my opinion, beyond any doubts, Zeit is Till's lyrical masterpiece!! It is high grade poetry (Hoch Poesie (?))! I really admire Till's versatility. Producing the lyrics of a Te Quiero Puta and those of Zeit.. Er ist (un Rammsteind sind) unglablich!! ❤️
Great video! I like how you break things down, I was mostly looking how to pronounce most of the German words so I can sing this at Karaoke but with your help translating the lyrics I almost want to try and learn how to sing it in English too. You also Inspired me to learn German as it looks like it is laid out similar to English! keep up the good work
Nice video. Till reminds me of Nietzsche's Ewige Wiederkunft where his challenge (at least my interpretation of his writings) is to live your best life because you will live it again forever. It is but a fleeting moment in the scheme of things, but it will happen again and again, so live up to that or be crushed by the notion of reliving your regrets eternally.
It is a wonderful song without understanding the meaning, but with your wonderful translation and interpretation, it becomes something most special. Thanks as always for this What is evident even without knowing what the lyrics mean is that it is full of emotion and visceral (rather than music by numbers that so many long established bands produce)
I am not that good in German. Never had a test, but I am around A1. But for me the lyrics were easy to understand. And yes, the lyricism is beautiful both in rhythm/rhymes and in its meaning. And of course the video is just on another level.
It's easy to speak with simple words, and difficult to speak with difficult words. But it takes a true master to successfully convey complex and difficult concepts such as time - something we all know superficially, but never *truly* consider until we're old and grey - in simple words.
grossartige Interpretation, you did very well and for sure, the lyrics in combination with the Video is another Masterpiece, and the more often i listn , i love teh melodie as well ;)
My interpretation and thought was time goes on like a continuous cycle and those rare occasions when we are truly happy of course we want time to stop. The showing of the sand and hourglass ⌛ time keeps going and them showing the scenes reversing to me meant a desire to go back in time either to the moment of birth and start our lives over or to before we're even born saying no i don't even want to be born i want to go back before i was even conscious of my own existence and mortality. Them being blindfolded to me was no one knows whats going to happen in the future we don't know what kind of lives these babies are going to have..the babies themselves are completely helpless and must blindly rely on his mother or another person to take care of it and help it survive but then when we're old enough we sometimes think why? Why bring babies into this world knowing all the pain and suffering and why am i here? Just to go through suffering both of physical amd emotional pain..then end up dying which is scary enough but then not knowing what happens after you die..is that it? Is there going to be another life? Hell? Heaven? Ok damn!😮 the different messages in the lyrics and the images in the video are like a beautiful tragedy...joyful pain..tears of joy and sorrow...feelings of excitement and dread for the future all yin and yang ☯ rolled into this one powerful song and video 😭😍😥😅❤🖤
the song is really beautiful. it makes me consider my own life, but it made me think about the band. how they experienced their time during the lockdowns and how the pandemic must have made them reflect too. the metaphors and visual representations are amazing. thank you for the translation and your very interesting thoughts on this song :)
An excellent analysis. God put time in place for us because our minds could not handle it all at once and for those beautiful moments in life to remember.
Many refer to the dark figures as the reaper(s). I don't find them scary and since there are three and not just one I connect them to the norse norns. The weavers, the measurers and the cutters of the threads of life. (Or simply past, present and future personified.) Anyway, great breakdown of the lyrcs and not just the plain "wow - reaction" we get everywhere. :)
Time moves faster the older you get if you don't take specific actions to deliberately pay attention to everything. This is similar to the reason that a lot of drugs make time seem to move more slowly. Basically, the more information your brain has to process/ how closely you're paying attention to details/ how novel your environment and activities are, the more slowly things seem to move. So if you're a child experiencing everything for the first time, you pay attention to everything. If you're old, you just jumble most perceptions into per-constructed categories and tend to gloss over most environmental data. There is also some effect related specifically to experiencing time as a proportion of all time you've already experienced, but that's more nuanced, complicated, and as-yet not fully explained.
Not just one of Rammstein's most meaningful songs, but one of the most meaningful period... it is the most universal, wonderful, and tragic element of existence, after all. Zeit! Amazing song.
While we’re on the subject of explanations: what did Mike Skinner, Kate Nash, Lykke Li, Tame Impala, the Killers, and Florence + the Machine do to Kraftklub?
This new Rammstein song is such an incredible masterpiece, both musically and lyrically! (The visuals of the music video are also amazing.) The way Till uses his voice so expressively, and how the lyrics will definitely mean something to everyone! It made me think of how beautiful and expressive the German language is, and made me remember a quote from Hesse's Steppenwolf: "Im deutschen Geist herrscht das Mutterrecht, die Naturgebundenheit in Form einer Hegemonie der Musik, wie sie nie ein andres Volk gekannt hat." 😍🔥
I wonder if fair use policy would allow for distorting the actual sound from the song being translated and critiqued enough to make it illegible but keeping the melody (perhaps a simple low pass filter) so that as the translation is being spoken over the top the listener/learner still has an easy recognizable reference to the original piece of the song? This would help a lot with recall when re-listening to the song in the future.
It's odd that I happened across this song and then your explaination when "Our" Zeit is at risk of being stopped by actions I have no control of, yet I have not given permission for my zeit to be stopped. \m/
Thanks for the video, Dave. I'd been looking forward to your interpretation. Even with my very limited knowledge of German, I could see it's a beautiful song, so straightforward but multi-layered at the same time, and watching your video filled in the gaps I was wondering about. Vielen, vielen, dank!
“Aufhoren wenn es am schonsten ist” is in my opinion pointing out how useless our wise advices are in the face of the death, when you could say “oh damn why did I not enjoy this to the fukkest and now it is gone forever”
I couldn't help to think that the song and video is hinting about reincarnation. We die, we're born and we're blind to it all within the river of time. Anyone else see this?

You are who I go to, to understand, not just translate Rammsteins songs. So glad to see you on my timeline again and I cant wait for the new album, and your explanation of the lyrics!
Danke schön for making this videos! It's so good that someone who's native language is german explain the meaning of a frase or a saying that maybe even if you learnt it you never seem to quite grasp
I absolutely love Rammstein and their music. Til is a genius creating his choice of words lyrics and thoughts as he conveys them. Thanks for the work on your channel I really appreciate and enjoy watching and learning.
RAMMSTEIN has always created masterpieces if you ask me! My life has a better meaning & purpose because of this legendary band.
I needed this video so so much. Vielen Dank!! Great explanation, as always.
Thank you for guiding me to a perspective on the lyrics and the meaning of the language. My deepest respect to you and hope you're doing well 🙂
I'm American and have been listening to ramstien for most of my life atleast 15-20 years of these badass legends. To the point I can sing almost every song word for word with the German accent and still not know what I'm saying cause I only know English. But your video really breaks it down. Thanks brother
Thank you for saying that and spreading the word! :)
*rammstein lol
I agree that this song is a masterpiece both lyrically, musically and visually. Thank you for your insights.
Thanks to your videos, I have come to appreciate more and more Rammstein songs. I saw them in Chicago.... What a fantastic show and performance!!! This song was in their setlist... a truly masterpiece! Danke my friend :)
This song is absolutely brilliant! Thanks for this great video, it makes it even more profound. I get very emotional every time I hear it.
Thank you for explaining so well what these lyrics mean.
This is a great video that really helped to aid my comprehension of the lyrics. Superb analysis of the song!
This song came out of nowhere as you said. To me for example it hit very close to home, as I lost my mom 8 month ago. Now being alles allein, ganz allein.
Although being mentally tough to hear, it's also what I need to hear.
My condolences, Frederik!
This is the only video a non German speaker needs to see when listening to Zeit. Well done! The line "Augenblick, verweile doch" is a direct reference to Goethe's Faust.
"Werd ich zum Augenblicke sagen:
Verweile doch! du bist so schön!
Dann magst du mich in Fesseln schlagen,
Dann will ich gern zugrunde gehn!"
ist wert, das es zugrunde geht;
Drum besser wär's, daß nichts entstünde.
So ist denn alles, was ihr Sünde,
Zerstörung, kurz, das Böse nennt,
Mein eigentliches Element...😈
Went only for simply the lyrics, and got q great video with aqesome explanation. Great job!
Tremendous! Enjoying your content immensely!👍
Awesome, I'm happy for you! Thanks for sharing those insights and for watching! :)
Many thanks for the explanation, priceless
German with VlogDave = das fest ist gut!
I was looking forward to your analysis!
I agree absolutely a great masterpiece..pure art and poetry at its finest!! 😍💕💕💕
Great video! I'm a huge Rammstein fan and I also think this song is a masterpiece
Till really got me in the feels with this one. Prost!
I saw this and your "adieu" video. You earned a subscriber. Great work.
This video is also a masterpiece, vielen dank Dave!! 👌🏻❤️❤️
Hut ab!
Wow, thanks a lot!
Hut ab- for you!
Thank you.
Thanks a lot for these really kind words, John! It's much appreciated 🙏
That song BY FAR is their best song I’ve heard from them, don’t want to make it depressing but I had a friend take his own life on March 2nd and 10 days later that song came out and it does make me tear up as I passionately love the song and the lyrics
My condolences!
.... great, superb translation and explanation! ...much appreciated .... big thanks!!!
Thank you for these videos! Rammstein is one of my favorite bands and your videos help me understand the songs.
From a subscriber to your channel, Bravo for another outstanding video, which earned a well-deserved "Llike."
The lyrics with the sea remind me of the Myth of the river Acheron. That river was believed to be leading to the underworld. The river I mentioned is located in the region of Epirus, Greece.
Rammstein another album out and sweet new song. Cant wait to see them live in 6 months. Been delayed 2 years already.
I hear ya!👍
I'm going to see them in Chicago (USA)
@@vinawaldren6888 boston for me
In my opinion, beyond any doubts, Zeit is Till's lyrical masterpiece!!
You also Inspired me to learn German as it looks like it is laid out similar to English! keep up the good work
Hey Nikkolaus, that's awesome! Thanks for telling me! :)
Thanks Dave, It was very interesting to hear your perspective,
Thanks as always for this
What is evident even without knowing what the lyrics mean is that it is full of emotion and visceral (rather than music by numbers that so many long established bands produce)
Thanks for translating their new song!
grossartige Interpretation, you did very well and for sure, the lyrics in combination with the Video is another Masterpiece, and the more often i listn , i love teh melodie as well ;)
My interpretation and thought was time goes on like a continuous cycle and those rare occasions when we are truly happy of course we want time to stop.
12:45 talking about "Sterbehilfe" and "suicide". There is a song Sterbehilfe by Dutch electro-industrial band Suicide Commando. Beautiful song.
I watched the official music video and IMMEDIATELY came here!
Many refer to the dark figures as the reaper(s). I don't find them scary and since there are three and not just one I connect them to the norse norns. The weavers, the measurers and the cutters of the threads of life. (Or simply past, present and future personified.)
Anyway, great breakdown of the lyrcs and not just the plain "wow - reaction" we get everywhere.
Thanks for all your hard work.
Need to revisit the meaning .
Thanks!
Not just one of Rammstein's most meaningful songs, but one of the most meaningful period... it is the most universal, wonderful, and tragic element of existence, after all. Zeit! Amazing song.
Or is this a message from rammstain that their carer is almost over and it is like farewell song
She followed me all the way home confronting me as much she could after the experience I just had
This song Mak me cry very hard and it gives me motivation to achieve my dream
This new song feels like perfectly composed trailer music for "Dark"
Would fit really well, yep!
Thank you!❤️
Sand also might be a parallel to the biblical “you are dust and you will become dust”
Wirklich saugut!
While we’re on the subject of explanations: what did Mike Skinner, Kate Nash, Lykke Li, Tame Impala, the Killers, and Florence + the Machine do to Kraftklub?
Please do an analysis of "Mein Herz Brennt"!
I am German. However, this song or video needs no comments or translations.
Very useful for me to study Deutsch, thanks!
Amazing song and meaning🙌🏽🖤
This new Rammstein song is such an incredible masterpiece, both musically and lyrically! (The visuals of the music video are also amazing.) The way Till uses his voice so expressively, and how the lyrics will definitely mean something to everyone! It made me think of how beautiful and expressive the German language is, and made me remember a quote from Hesse's Steppenwolf: "Im deutschen Geist herrscht das Mutterrecht, die Naturgebundenheit in Form einer Hegemonie der Musik, wie sie nie ein andres Volk gekannt hat." 😍🔥
Masterpiece indeed!
Makes me question Till's relation to God himself..
Wish I could meet him one day and ask him..
Can "Fluss der Zeit" mean the "flux of time" rather than the "River of time"? Or is it written different.
I choked just watching this video. Let alone the music video and the song
Keine Rast nur vorwarts streben could also mean that we are not able to stop time
Great work as always. Still trying to enjoy the song as , musically, it’s not one of my favourites.
13:43 Yes, but for a mature and philosophical treatise, you still cannot beat Buck Dich.
Ageee. Masterpiece
I cant find the answer one the internet. What are the words being sung before Till starts singing?
Well I have seen it and I now why she might have been there what she is it’s only for introduction of who have met her 😊
I couldn't help to think that the song and video is hinting about reincarnation. We die, we're born and we're blind to it all within the river of time.
Anyone else see this?
