This historical epic dramatizes the Battle of Peking, a turning point of the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900. When Dowager Empress Tzu-Hsi (Flora Robson) orders the Boxers, a group of Chinese secret societies, to massacre foreigners within China, a group of ambassadors, their families and staff hole up in a diplomatic compound. Major Matt Lewis of the United States Marine Corps (Charlton Heston) leads the defense while romancing Russian baroness Natalie Ivanoff (Ava Gardner).

the amount of silliness seeing a "siege tower rocket launcher" is something I appreciate. this scene gave me a good laugh

To be fair I can almost belive it, seems like someone took insperation from the Congreve rockets the British used and adopted after they encountered them being used by the Indians.

Not that unreasonable historically. Rocket artillery emerged in China and was prominent but unchanged until atleast the opium wars, (British steamers describe hundreds of black powder rockets firing on them from forts) the first multistage rocket came from Korea in the 1500s, the first Metal Cased from India in the 1700s, Asia always was good with rockets.

Well, rather a strange idea to combine siege tower with a rocket launcher. But at least it looked strange enough to be shown in the movie

I genuinely thought that was a siege tower.
When it started firing rocket i said, "its a tower of wood and gunpowder! Just shoot it!"

Heston said in his autobiography that Ava Gardner would get drunker as the day progressed so they killed off her character so they could get her off the picture.

I read many years ago that when they were fighting the insurgency in Algeria, the French had a shortage of bombs to drop on the insurgents. There was, however, a plentiful supply of empty Coca-Cola bottles. So some clever chap decided to load bundles of these into the bomb bays of the A-26 bombers and drop them on insurgent caravans. A classic, glass coke bottle is a rather substantial object, and shatters into lethal shards when dropped that hard, never mind what it does to any unlucky individuals it actually hits. As a bonus, the French discovered that when spinning through the air at 200 miles per hour, a coke bottle produces a very unnerving - and surprisingly loud - "wirra-wirra-wirra" sound. And they were allegedly dropping dozens at a time.

It's weird how the Chinese way back then were the first to introduce rockets into service, yet they simply didn't improvise a working formula against foes when they entered the 20th century.

A professional soldier never heard of a siege tower before... something that, I am certain even the Assyrians made use of. Maybe not rocket equipped ones, but it seems silly that a marine officer would have to consult someone else concerning an ancient siege device, as to what it is and how to combat it.

You're under siege, the enemy is hauling something towards you, you have clear lines of fire on enemy in the open...how brain dead do you need to be to keep letting them haul whatever they are hauling towards you to do whatever your enemy wants to do?

I agree with Joe here. The only believable reason would be that they were low on ammo and wanted to be sure each shot would find its mark.

It was night and they were holed up. Had to make the ammo last. Best to take aim with clumsy rifles during the day when more likely to hit your target.
Although this was one of the first times the western powers actually banded together as one, the Boxer army was huge.
