    As a few commentors have pointed out, a great hybrid idea that still keeps the effectiveness of the mace is a fancy walking cane with a weighted head. It's more inconspicuous, suits a vampire's noble aesthetic, and can be as effective as a mace if designed correctly. And then if they want it can also be a sword cane and have a backup blade when the blunt force isn't as important.

    • @dylanmorris7946
      @dylanmorris7946 5 лет назад +184

      My only retort to that thinking would be keeping with the fashion aesthetic of the time period. If you are basing this in the medieval time period, a traditional walking cane that we commonly associate with vampires and aristocrats wouldn't have been a common fashion statement until the 1600s. It would appear out of place to many people in a medieval period.
      Certain types of staffs and crooks were common among shepherds and the like, but that isn't exactly the regal look that many vampires seem to go with either.

      The bottom shaft of the cane could also feature either silver filigree or pointed oak. The reasoning for this is that one other threat to a vampire (other than Vampire Hunters) would be rival vampires, since chances are if they gravitate towards populated settings, there could potentially be competition for blood.

      Same maces and clubs of the ottomans and the Mughals were minimalistic. The head of it wasn’t very big this would be inconspicuous however the flanges of European maces would really hurt. So my design for a mace for a vampire would fuse the two. A small head with good flanges.
      A blunted executioners sword would also be good. Since they are noble in appearance I imagine some vampires would carry a sword of some sort.

    • @jlokison
      @jlokison 5 лет назад +89

      Pretty much what I was thinking. It depends of how common Vampires are, time period, social class of Vampire in question, and overall society though. A cane and or sword, for self defense of course, would be very appropriate for an upperclass gentleman, slightly harder for a lady to pull off, but again depends on the society.
      Most canes are also a little bit longer than a footmans mace or warhammer, giving greater reach. Due to the Vampires increased strength it can also be made of heavier woods and metals than normal, hiding its capabilities much like the Vampire walking with it.

    • @Merecir
      @Merecir 5 лет назад +24

      The cane does not need a blade inside, due to the extra strength of the wielder the cane/mace can be solid metal and just have the bottom end being pointy.
      This also fits when facing a dude in armor as the two main weapons against that are blunt weapons for bashing in the armor and thrusting slim weapons that targets the gaps in the armor.
      One end for bashing, the other for poking - all in a nice walking cane that blends into the human world.

    Another advantage of preventing blood loss is that it doesn't cause as much of a scene when a person just vanishes compared with when there is a huge messy pool of blood and a person vanishes (which means there will be less likely for Vampire hunters to come) especially useful when targeting people who nobody would notice if they vanished

    The mace was actually the first weapon that i thought of due to a reason that you actually didnt even look at. Depending on how much stronger a vamp is they could run into issues with the weapons they use not having enough strength to survival their use and you dont want to be contently replacing your weapon. This was actually something that was looked at in the inheritance cycle after eragon was turned into a half elf. he was offered a mace due to their simplicity and them not really having an edge to protect. Now this would mostly only be an issue if we are talking vamp on vamp fights or if the vamp was up against an opponent with similar strength but i still think ti would come into play if the vamp was using a sword against a weaker opponent and didnt watch their edge alignment

      thicker swords? keeps the noble aspect and most of the benefits at the cost of added weight and higher point of balance.
      the kind of vampires he talks about won't have to worry much about increasing the weight a bit.
      European blade but with the thickness of a katana? that seems kind of sturdy, or would the reduced flexibility make it too brittle?.

    • @jasonleejames_official
      @jasonleejames_official 3 года назад +9

      Another thing he was waffling on but not realizing is Vampires typically only drink Human blood so if they were fighting with non-humans would they really care about blood loss? With that said if they were fighting werewolves blunt weapons may not be nearly as effective.
      I'd say in that situation a better weapon would be a War Pick or a heavy Halberd.
      For fighting humans I think a vampire might consider a whip or chain that they can bind the human with to collect them for drinking later.
      When he goes on about vampire hunters yes they probably would go with maces/swords depending on whether they're armored or not but I still think the chain idea would be more viable for a Vampire to use.
      I think a vampire would have more intelligence than a human so they could theoretically create more advanced weapons than a human would. We could imagine Bolo guns, net launchers, sleep darts, things that incapacitated their prey rather than wound them.

    In my oppinion the best "weapon" for a Vampire would be the walking stick/staff with a reinforce head to work as a hammer. Easy to disguise as a human with (specially as nobility) as its not technically a weapon, can deal with both armored and un-armored tagets without wasting the precious blood, can disarm/break arms easily with the hook-shaped head and even work as a thrusting weapon if the point is pointy enough, would work well on city setting due to overall legth and the "its not a weapon" thing... Im sure I can come up with more advantages to it.
    One objection would be that it isnt effective as a defensive tool against cutting edge weapons but it wouldnt be a problem for strong vampires to made the stick out of metal or just reinforce them with it as seen many times as "ornaments" or decoration.

      For me it depends on the setting: if your noble vampire is walking by the city looking for peasants for dinner, sure, a cane is a great hidden weapon to carry on.
      However, if I include a vampire lord in a story, close to the end could happen a big battle between an vampire army and an human army, in this setting the lesser vampires and/or brainwashed slaves would fight serious and their master would hate to spoil a great amount of food. Because of this, for me, the bloodsucking army would use blunt devasting weapons and maybe armor to repel the invasors (because it's a serious battle after all, and what call more the attention than an army of nobles carrying canes to fight against a horde of heavy weponize humans)

    Perfect for a vampire out on it's a nightly hunt!
    Why wasn't this considered alongside the sling?
    Also, a Whip wouldn't be too bad of a weapon either, nor to inconspicuous.

They also may want to defensively incorparate crucifixes into their armor/shield/literally crucifixes everywhere. As far as a vamp hunter ranged weapon the classy crossbow should work, with either wood tips or silver coated tips, depending on weaknesses. Perhaps they would use execution weapons to decapitate the vampires. Or just vials of holy water.
      Beyond weapons a hunter may want to otherwise change their lifestyle, going so far as to eat garlic every day and bathing in water laced with wolf's bane. Perhaps they would carry small trinkets to throw out and have the vampire count.

    After all, a vampire would be worried about attracting attention. A mace would probably attract far more attention (as it wouldn’t be that common outside of battlefields) than a truncheon or cane, fairly common weapons for self defence.

They would kill even medium game purely through concussive force without cutting up the meat too much for better eating. Now imagine a vampire that could use a 1000 lb crossbow with a simple lever mechanism for quick loading with an upscaled medieval version of anti riot rubber bullets except so powerful they'd likely incapacitate even through plate armour ...

    Now shad we need to ask the _real_ questions here...like:
    Would a pommel thrown from a vampire be more effective? Or less?
    Think about it.
    Theory: The pommel unscrewed and thrown is an extremely effective ranged weapon; we all know this. But my question is _where_ does this efficiency come from. There are two possible reasons why the thrown pommel is so effective.
    Option 1: the power just comes from pure kinetic energy. As in when the pommel is thrown heavy pommel builds up momentum before making contact with the target after which it then converts its kinetic energy into impact energy cause massive damage to the target.
    Option 2: the power comes from divine intervention. As in when the pommel is thrown god himself imbues it with holy energy. Giving the pommel the ultimate power to crush the armour of the heathens and infidels; It’s quite simple! however, this can only work if the pommel is thrown by a holy knight in servitude of the lord.
    Conclusion: really it depends on which of the theories is true. If the first theory is true then the pommel throwing tactic would be even more effective than normal due to the vampires increased strength and reflexes. In fact this technique might even be favored by the vampire race due to the fact that the pommel throwing tactic uses purely impact trauma to kill and therefore would not cause bleeding meaning that the vampires food would loose no blood.
    If however my second theory was true then the pommel would not work in the hands of such a fowl disgusting heathenous creature such as the vampire in fact if the vampire were to even such as pick up a pommel the lord himself would probably turn the pommel to silver to burn the unholy flesh of the vampiric creature if not smite him from his kingdom with his holy might power and grace

    Really late to the party with this one, but I just wanted to add a point about surface area. Assuming the same mass and density, a smaller surface area is better for defeating armor. This has been discussed ad nauseum on a number of medieval weapon channels, but I was watching Skallagrim recently. He pointed out that a larger surface area is actually better for transferring momentum into the target. Something to keep in mind when talking about causing concussions, whip-lash, etc. Even a mallet when wielded by a vampire might not dent or crush a breast plate as much as a proper war hammer, but does it matter if it sends the man flying into a wall or into his allies. Same principle as "it's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop."

This ofcourse wouldn't stop a vampire. They would just find anlther way around if say you cross a fast moving river on a boat.
      Second most Vampires in Europe where Christians before becoming vampires. So crosses and such depend entirely on the vampire and their own belief's.
      Sun light also doesn't kill vampires at least not pure bloods.
      The stake to the heart was originally supposed to pin them in the grave before decapataion. Granted it also falls under anything that will kill you will kill a vampire realistically even with superhuman healing factors.
      So a stake to the heart = dead vampire.
      A bulet to the head = dead or badly wounded vampire as humans have survived a bullet to the head with proper medical care.

Even a stone, in the hands of someone who’s half decent at throwing, could easily kill someone. Imagine the destruction a silent and unseen vampire could wrought.
    This can also be applied to open battlefields but I feel like vampires fight in their element such as forests or villages during the night, in which a vampire would have no difficulty dispatching any number of foes with no danger to itself.

    Hi there Shad,
    Don’t you think that your augmentation is a bit wrong in the First few minutes? You start off with saying that a vampire would not need a weapon to hunt its natural prey, that being humans.
    Then you go on to say that in that case it is a question of figuring out what weapon would be suited to fight a human that is equipped and able to defend itself against a vampire.
    If that is the case it is a question of self-defence for the vampire. They are already perfectly able to get their food if they want to. So the weapon would be a tool to defend their own lives(undeath). In that case its seems to me that the vampire would not worry about waisting the blood of his attacker.
    Take this for example: I like to eat boar, whenever I can get it, but if a boar charges at me ill shoot it or stick a spear in it to ward it off. Self-preservation is more important in that moment than spoiling a potential meal. There are more boars in the world, I’ll get one later when my live isn’t in peril.

      Just because a vampire might not use a weapon when hunting doesn't mean he doesn't have a dagger or sword at their hip in case things go south. " I'll just drain this cute blond before heading back to my crypt. OH GOD SHE'S A WIZARD!!! GOTTA PULL MY SWORD AND KILL HER QUICK!!"
      On the flip side a vampire might want to whack a victim in the head to stun them so they don't fight back.

    Greetings, Shad! I rather enjoyed your video on weapons a vampire might use in combat within a fantasy medieval setting. I also appreciate how you covered both vampire versus prey and vampire versus hunter scenarios. However, one area I would have loved for you to have explored in more detail is vampire versus vampire. For full disclosure, my wife and I write a historical fantasy series incorporating blood drinker races based on actual myths. In our series Morrigan's Brood, we often depict different blood drinker races coming to blows with other races of blood drinkers; such combat may entail one-versus-one to an army versus a competing army. The nature of combat varies depending on the time period of the specific story (iron age, late Roman Republic, Dark Ages, etc.) and the unique traits of each race based on their myths. For instance, a common thread would be that all blood drinker races required blood for sustenance but did not have to kill to feed (killing the victim is so wasteful, in my view). Also, some races fly while others can only run fast. Some races can detect the nature of other races, while others can only tell blood-drinker from mortal. What we focused on was the use of bladed weapons for combat between vampire races, as in our stories, the head must be severed in order to kill a blood-drinker. A blunt weapon, like a mace, would not completely kill a blood-drinker if it could be fed and healed after sustaining wounds. So, in each period, we had to incorporate bladed weapons relating to the age and culture. I will say that as we have not yet ventured into the middle ages yet with our writing, we will take seriously your comments on likely arms that vampires would use if they existed in the middle ages. Thank you very much for producing this video, and I look forward to seeing more wonderful content. Cheers!

    Blood loss could actually be all but invalidated as a factor here because of two reasons: Immediate survival (escape combat>securing a meal) and variance in the amount of blood required for the vampire to survive, which depends on the lore involved.
    We are obviously dealing with a fictional creature here. This means we invent our own rules for it, and our own explanation for how it works within the fantasy world we place it in. The basic idea of a vampire is flexible as all ideas are to some degree, we can design a vampire that is very desperate for meals - one that requires GALLONS of blood to survive each night, or we could go for a much more moderate design - one that needs maybe only a cup or two of blood from prey to survive. If we steer more towards the later design, this would imply that actually bleeding out an opponent in combat could be a very effective way of incapacitating them, which would enable the vampire to move in and begin feeding. You don't need to drain literally ALL of the blood out of the victim to subdue them, you could still theoretically manage to get at least enough of a filling for it to be worth it.
    Not to mention the objective may be different when we're talking about a "warrior vampire" scenario. If we go by traditional vampire lore, then the creature would PREFER to avoid combat at all costs, using stealth or otherwise running away from people who can defend themselves. If prevented from doing this, the vampire would then be forced to engage in combat to survive, and because of that, we may not have to care as much about wasting potential food. Just kill the soldier standing in your way as efficiently as possible, and move on to a more helpless victim.
    Vampires are also well known in many kinds of fiction for vanity, charm, and fear. They are often emotionally manipulative - sometimes to a magic, mind-control kind of degree, and often use fear tactics to terrorize and demoralize their prey. They are often shown to behave like sadists, but this may not be their true motive - there are reasonable advantages to behavior like this. If a vampire in some town is well known for using very scary slasher-type weapons that leave a huge mess, it can terrorize the locals and make them less willing to actually fight back. If the vampire can brutalize a few people, the cost would be a potential waste of a few meals, but the vampire would gain the advantage of convincing people to just run away more often rather than face such a terrifying enemy in battle. This is compatible with a lot of vampire lore because they're often depicted as creatures who love a little showmanship, often to a narcissistic and self-indulging degree.

    I think an interesting choice for a vampire could be a whip. Doesn't cause significant bleeding, great for getting around an opponent's guard, & since they basically have infinite time to practice & master it, they could super quickly use it to disarm & restrain their target. It's also easily hidden when they're just walking the streets, so no suspicious looks from passersby as to why you're carrying a mace with you at all times. Doesn't really hold up against an armoured foe, but for civilian prey, or unarmoured hunters, it seems to work pretty well.
