I think this is how "Q" from 007 started: "I can build anything, I just need a better system"...Utility is a HUGE thing. My first show was our two car garage. Wife's rule: You can have WHATEVER TOOLS YOU WANT...as long as BOTH cars fit in the garage at night. So everything was on wheels, piano hinges, pulleys, whatever. 15-20 min of setting up the tools to start, work and 15-20 min to change or shut down/cleanup. The overhead was killing my hobby! New shop keeps it all ready to go (at the sacrifice of portability which your super-spy cases handily fix!) I am so happy for you! Every time you use your "family" of tools, you will smile even more. Just Awesome!

This is great. Please consider potential fire protection when keeping things powered all the time though. Even if that just means removing all power at night. I suffered a fire that destroyed my workshop and business from one cable left powered overnight. I'm sure it will be fine, but it doesn't do any harm to consider these things before they happen!

Obviously, also watch that things don't get too hot in an enclosed drawer. Many drawers had holes but might need some ventilation holes in the case or, worst case, a small case fan for cooling.

I'm not sure I've ever seen someone so happy! Such an amazing makeover to the shop, it's obviously going to be more functional, and even if it didn't, just the joy it brings you, the creativity, the happiness of being in a well set up space, it would all be worth it just for that. Can't wait to see more of it and how you grow it over time!

    Dear Laura,
What you are doing, I did a few years ago when I retired. You are going to LOVE this way of working! I built my own cart/case storage units. For example, I have a cart just for "things that drill." It has all of my bits, chargers for my cordless drills, drills themselves, and there is a drill press on the top. It can go anywhere and plug in anywhere and I can also take it outside. I love my shop now! Now, ANYTHING that is used for drilling can be found in that cart only. There are other carts that work the same way, e.g. "things that saw." Your "family" concept is the way to go!
    Best Wishes,
    Tom K.

Would be cool to integrate the front door panels that you removed for the tools you hang on the walls. That way if you need to take those along you unhook the panel from the wall, connect to the front of a box, close it up and take it as well!
Looking forward to seeing you use these long into the future!

Cool futuristic storage system! really like it... you probably won't see this comment but as a guy that has done industrial controls wiring it's not a good idea to tin your wires like that with solder and then put it into the screw terminals. it's strictly forbidden because of fire risks and shock hazards. the idea is that you have two metals that have different melting points and expansion rates in a physical connection and they can, over time as the current heats up the wire, cause the connection to degrade and become a fire risk. it's actually a very similar idea to why the backstab connections on electrical outlets cause fires at an elevated rate. bad connection increases resistance which increases the heat at that point. anyhoo be safe and keep rocking out. (also, if you want to be super duper industrial controls level you can go with ferrules that you crimp on to those wires and they will withstand being moved around from terminal to terminal many times without degrading.

I have no idea how I even found your channel but I am SO glad I did! Please don't take this the wrong way - but you are absolutely adorable! I realize most grown women don't want to be seen as "adorable", but I don't know how else to describe you.
I started with the video of the new house, and I'm now watching the espionage boxes... and I just love you! The joy you find in the simplest, silliest things makes me smile, and Lord knows we could all use a few smiles lately. You seem to be extremely creative which I highly value and appreciate, and I can't wait to watch you bring both the house and the workshop back to life so that they work for you.
Fantastic job on revamping these cabinets - You think the way I do. We need it to work, and work well, but we also need it to be easily adaptable. There's no point in spending more time reorganizing than actually "being creative", or actually working when we need to lol.
    Adorable! 🤣
*** ETA- Girl, EVERYONE that has a use for this system is going to want it. Please, PLEASE, Make sure they are locked up with a good alarm system on the building - or a big dog, whichever works for you - cuz I know I think it's amazing and I don't even really have any use for it 🤣. Although believe you me, as a crafter and small time DIYer, I would certainly put it to work should it happen to fall into my lap. How lucky are you? This is awesome!

Storage and organization is important too. Too many of us just try to find an immediate, quick solution for these one or two things. Too many people to do not take the time to find a solution for EVERYTHING. Congratulations on doing that. This too is vital work. And the person who appreciates it the most is you. That is also important. Thanks, and now I will go into my shop and try to tackle a corner. It is not everything but it is a start.

I'm not an organized person in day to day life and gotten worse since my lower leg amputation. But in the tools department (due to my career...machinist) everything is cleaned and put away EVERY night. Time is money so to speak. Next time I move I'm organizing into 3 different tool chests (minimum) that are color coded. Red is SAE, Blue is Metric, Yellow is precision... Then I'll have seperate boxes in the welding area, soldering/wiring, machine shop, carpentry, etc.
Think I might actually kill for the system you have, but unless someone was harming my family its not worth the time. Congratulations on the incredible purchase Laura.

Good Luck! I've been reorganizing my shop for 40 years, each time thinking, "I got this figured out now". That usually lasts through two projects, or until I think I have to have some new machine. But the shop is already too crowded and I don't see where a lathe and mill will fit...unless...hmm, maybe if I put some sort of lift mechanism under the router table I could roll it under the CNC and slide them both closer to the laser and put that on a cart and reroute it's exhaust...and how much space do I really need around that lathe anyway...

The shot of you sitting on the shorter stack between the two taller stacks illustrates a possible 4th design element: furniture. Give yourself two or three short stacks between tall stacks, toss a couple of throw pillows into the mix, and now you have a couch/loveseat to sit in while you ponder the next project...

  • @sgsax
    @sgsax 3 года назад

Such a fun bunch of problems to have! 😀 The fact that they are uniform modular units means that if you need to shuffle the stacks, you can do it easily. For me, an important part of organization is what I call ergonomics. My definition of this is that everything should be easy and comfortable to get to when you need it. I don't ever want to have to move something out of the way to get to something else. These boxes should make that very easy for you. A great upgrade to your shop and your excitement about it is obvious. 😁 Thanks for sharing!

    Dear Laura,
I've been doing the same with simple Bosch L-Boxxes. The advantage is that they're not super heavy and bulky and I can also carry them over stairs.
The only problem I have, and I guess you will experience it as well if you go mobile, is that you always need to have a "base stack" of boxes with you.
Bringing your angle grinder + abrasives onsite is the one thing, but you will always need the box with your pliers, screwdrivers, measurement tools etc. with you.
It's not a bad thing, but just something to consider.

I think you know Adam Savage. He has a philosophy of "First Order Retrievability" - what you need most often is closest to hand. It looks like you've set up your system to be the same kind of thing. Incredible job.

Subbed for these boxes, great stuff. As a mechanic of 20 years there is nothing better than getting that perfect organised set up. Well done and also subbed!

That's a nice find storage containers I like what you did with the keeping the electrical so you can reuse and especially having it mobile so you can do the work

As soon as I saw those boxes, I was so envious, because of them being perfect for these three pillars (storage, utility, mobility).

Wow. I am utterly impressed with both your total positiveness and the result of your work shop. I am also, more than a little, envious of you.😉 Good job and I look forward to see more.
