Aw the pooch paws at 2:08 🐾💓 in the past, I found Pilates by way of my physical therapist and recovering from an injury to my back. The strength, flexibility and tonality I found in my body was nothing like what I experience now in doing Yoga. I love them both but am finding myself needing Pilates more now as I’m aging and my core has become weak. Great video!
Thank you! I’ve just watched 3 videos in succession purporting the explain the differences between yoga and Pilates, and yours really made it clear! The others just waffled on for several minutes without really explaining anything! Excellent video! Thanks!
I’ve done both basic yoga and pilates, but I find pilates more suitable for me. Pilates is great for fixing your posture and strengthening our core muscle. Thank you for the explanation, very helpful to me.
Thank you-first time this was clarified for me. And as a side, I’m so in love with your dog! Doggie was like, tap, tap tap, “Hey! Need a little attention over here!” That was just adorable.😊
I agree Pilates gives me energy.I can't do yoga because I had eye surgery 2 years ago and some of the positions put too much pressure on my eye.But I really love Pilates more. The pace and the way my body feels after words is incredible.
That was an excellent explanation! I used to teach both, but ended up focusing on teaching yoga, yet I still practice pilates. They give me different benefits, and they're my two favorite things to do. Add in dancing, and it's the trifecta!
I have attended both yoga and pilates and ended up sticking to yoga. I feel that I enjoy certain elements of yoga, such as holding a stretch for a long time, holding a position, repetitive movements like sun salutation. When I went back to pilates I do feel that it's much more fast pace and there's more uses of resistance bands, the movements have many more pulses.
I would say that is a difference between yoga and Pilates, we usually don't do a lot of repetition compared to Yoga. The use of extra equipment really varies depending upon the teacher and class. I have a lot of slower videos on this channel focused more on release and ease than strength.
Definitely a yoga gal, mostly bc i have knee and back pain and like that I can slowly ease into poses find what feels right for my body, as well as the fact that it’s helped TREMENDOUSLY with my depression and extreme anxiety

I did yoga for four years but began to find the spiritual aspect conflicting with my values and beliefs. Have sense switched to pilates and I'm much happier.
Same for me. Yoga is more a spiritual, religious exercise. The goal of yoga is in complete contradiction to my beliefs so I am also looking for alternatives like pilates. :)
@@lidersercemeli7154 I have done yoga for about 10 years and have wrestled with the spiritual aspects as a Christian. Whenever the instructor would talk about the divine within, I would relate it to my belief system instead. But, yesterday I received an email from my favorite RUclips instructor saying she is hiring a High Priestess who adheres to the gnostic religion and a whole lot of weird, far out notions like these. It was the first time she had linked herself totally with the Eastern religious philosophy of yoga VS. using yoga as an exercise routine and (I felt) she forced this on us by insisting we link ourselves with this guru guy. I am out.
I've been once in a similar situation as you, it is for me so terrible, that during this time I've even forgotten my original insist. I felt so uncomfortable, it seems like something has controlled me. And then I give up Yoga for months. After that, I feel much more free in heart and be peaceful. Thanks for elaborating this distinction. Yoga, however, is more than just Aasanas. It is a way of life practiced by ancient Yogis. Pilates (the name of the founder) took the principles of yoga and developed the current system of exercises to enhance athletic performance.
Thanks for the comment. And agree Yoga is more than the poses. I focused on the physical aspect because that's what a lot of people are focusing on for the difference. Also Joseph Pilates created his own system, not based on Yoga, it's a common misconception. 😀

Very well rounded.

I do yoga (ashtanga and aerial) as well as Pilates. Lately, I´ve taken an interest in primal movement. And while I find that these practices share a lot of similarities (and one can benefit the other), I have to agree that Pilates is less static and more about control in movement. Also, Pilates shifts the axis to target lateral muscles, obliques, etc. Primal movement builds on the same principles but cultivates explosive power.

thank you very much for the information and the straight clear simple explanation . I'm very new to such activities and I was trying to understand the differences .
Hi, I've completed 12 one-on-one Pilates classes and I am still not clear about how classes should really be that I feel quite frustrated because I don't feel like I have made good progress. Each time I attend a class, we do totally new exercises. I am not sure if it's by design or if it's just the instructor. You've made a good point about finding an instructor you vibe with, however, she was my only option because she was the only English speaking instructor. Anyway, every time she taught me a new move, I, of course, had a little difficulty since it was my first time doing it. After hearing comments from my instructor telling me that it might be difficult for me, I kind of snapped and told her well of course, it's my first time doing it and that she always introduced something new that I can't get better at something. She said that that's how it is - 60-70% of the class is composed of new moves. I am not really sure whether this is the case. I also attend weightlifting classes and we've pretty much been doing the same big compound moves that I could see my progress both in form, reps, and weight. I would like to continue doing Pilates because I see its benefits for my core and muscles that aren't worked in a regular weightlifting class. But I am not sure how I feel about having to do new moves each time. Hope someone could clear this up for me.
There can be a lot of variation with how we teach a Pilates class. But if that isn't working for you and since they are private sessions, the teacher should be open to having more repetitive sessions if that's something you feel would benefit you. This is the way I like to train with a lot of people who are new to Pilates (or even people who have been moving with Pilates for some time). Here on RUclips and within the Membership I even encourage people to repeat either a class or Pilates series more than once so that they become more familiar with Pilates. Although I personally LOVE variations and different ways to move with Pilates, it's not always beneficial to have a lot of new exercises in every class.
I'm here to learn the difference, since a node metanalys found Pilates to outperform most treatments by a small, but define margin for nonspecific lower back pain, while yoga underperformed slightly. Thanks!
Hey haha I just bought my first pilates mat and rope from Decathlon yesterday and this is the first video I watch, and all this while i thought pilates is pronounced pie=lates :")
Well, I've been practicing viniyoga for years and it looks a lot like Pilates except there's more emphasis on the inner working whereas Pilates system seems to target certain areas and build strength...
I think you right.... for me its about the instructor and the quality of the workout. Just aint got time for frustrations concerning my workouts .... Get~r~done effectively. I have come across some Pilates videos where they "add" their version of movements and its down right dangerous for your back. Thumbs down on them.
Very true in Vinyasa and other styles of Yoga as well. Yet there is still a difference between the flow of a yoga class with poses and Pilates exercises.
Meditation and prayer are one and the same regardless of your spiritual beliefs. Yoga to me is just another form of exercise. I don't look too deep into anything beyond the physical benefits.
I'm an Indian and I just cannot get myself to like yoga! It's too slow and makes me sleepy. I love pilates. Leaves me with a spring in my step once I'm done.
Yes if you look closely most of postures in pilates are that of Yoga. Main difference is that Yoga is done slowly whereas pilates is a bit faster. I can say that because I have tried both.
Yoga will get you in better shape and better health as well. People can't even believe how many of my health issues got better and reducing since i have been doing yoga. But whatever makes you happy.
I have been doing Iyengar Yoga for a number of years, and after a class I feel calm yet energized, unless it is a "restorative" class, after which I feel quiet and peaceful.
I practice both but my yoga class is more dynamic and less about spiritualism and meditation while my Pilates class has some yoga aspects in it. I like the mixture well because I find relaxation in the movements of both classes. They have the right level of speed and awareness for me :)
Thankful for the information video. It would be better if you can speak not so fast . I start 20 min Pilate at home today beside take yoga class on Sat .
I literally am a walking stiff wooden board. I want to try pilates or yoga but really can't do a traditional V-sit without busting into tears for it feels like the skin is ripping off the back of my knees. I also CANNOT touch my toes when sitting down or bending over. So I am just feeling like no matter what I would try it would not help me and I am very bad with my breathing. I have shallow breathing and with my nose being broken so many times I feel that all is lost for me regarding either of these. Sad face.
I have had so much pain and inflexibility in my life, and it feels like doing yoga and Pilates is torture. Others say, doesn't this feel delicious, and I say, no, it is miserable. But, a little bit at a time, a little bit, every day, and things improve. If we keep doing what we have always done, we will keep getting what we have always had. I promise, that I have had marked improvement by doing Pilates and by using a ball to roll on for all my tight sore spots. I prefer Pilates because I can move through things. I am not as much of a fan of holding things a long time, the movement helps me to feel more mobility and it also distracts from any discomfort. (I'm 50 years old, and I feel better now, than I did when I was 21, after a couple of years of working on this.)
I’m going to try Pilates in the morning and yoga at night. I think that would fit the best. Hell my ass gets out of breath doing yoga so I can’t imagine how Pilates is going to be! Lol
NO SET TIME ☹️ Personal results may/ WILL very . LOTS of things contribute to "how long does it take to lose "XYZ" Weight. It is more complicated than that! It is based on a number of things but important ones to mention are.... Results very based on your past eating habits ; I know! sounds weird but think about it, how has your body been taken care of or was it abused and for how long? Your current eating habbits is a huge contributor, what have u changed? what's different ? Think about this - your fairly UN healthy you don't normally exercise and you go on a crash keto diet and run for a hour a day ... YOUR GOING TO DROP QUICKER than if Your fairly healthy and you go counting calories and all yoga and mostly your own body, your body will digest , absorb, burn and get rid of -at it's own pace. Each body is different to lose its all of YOU! Sorry I don't have a more direct time frame for you. But if anyone does they are lying lol
Can we do Pilates everyday or do we need rest days? Can we do Pilates for the same group of muscles(abs, thighs) everyday or do we need to vary the muscle group everyday?
I guess it just depends on the type of yoga class you are taking( hatha, ashtanga maybe yin there are so many different variations) I get a great work out from alot of yoga but I'd say pilates definitely works my legs Alot more and in different muscle groups than yoga typically does....so it's a toss up for me I enjoy both!
I am doing some beginner Pilates for 2-3 months. My posture is better and can feel my lungs are getting clean. But I think yoga is good for my Brain because stress affects it quite often. Even with Pilates sometimes I have chronic pain. So I am gonna do yoga .
I was looking for more like yoga in itself is a spiritual discipline whereas pilates is a mind-body practice without the spiritual aspect right? Bc I am a Catholic and just recently found out that it’s not right to do yoga..
Thanks for the Video, it's a short an helpful explanation of both activities! I have a question about pilates: I train calisthenics and am looking for a sport I can practice on my off day. This should help me to improve my mobility. Is pilates suitable?
There similar the only Major deference is this ,Yoga means to be yoked or connected with higher self or being and has spiritual side in the form of chakras and Pilates do not and is purely pre body warm up made for fitness. Me personal has a christian the yoga would clash with my belief to understand yoga fully you have to understand chakras.
Agreed. I focused on the physical movements of the systems for this comparison. Learning about the chakras was the highlight of my yoga teacher training.
Tyra Trent if you’re interested I could send you a video about it . But I’m short the reason it clashes is because yoga is really a spiritual practice of the Hindu people, the do more of a physical prayer /adoration . Each pose they do simulates the form of a deity/god of their religion (hence every time you do a certain pose, you are venerating/worshipping those gods without even knowing). In the end, yoga becomes a door for spirits to be in your body . The enlightenment that yogis/Hindus seek is different from what we Christians seek 😅. Christians seek for sainthood and por spiritual life is different . Anyways if your interest in knowing more let me know :) ; and sorry if my English is not good ! Xx

Although I personally LOVE variations and different ways to move with Pilates, it's not always beneficial to have a lot of new exercises in every class.
you are great. thanks for such introductory simplification
Glad it was helpful!
We are always learning something new!
I think I would like a mix of both!
They do compliment each other well.
Well, I've been practicing viniyoga for years and it looks a lot like Pilates except there's more emphasis on the inner working whereas Pilates system seems to target certain areas and build strength...
Agreed. Been doing yoga for a longtime too..
What’s with the ellipses?
I am impressed with your muscle control. You have such good posture
Thanks so much for the compliment.
Thank you, now I finally have a clearer understanding 👍
Glad it helped!
I think you right.... for me its about the instructor and the quality of the workout. Just aint got time for frustrations concerning my workouts .... Get~r~done effectively. I have come across some Pilates videos where they "add" their version of movements and its down right dangerous for your back. Thumbs down on them.
Thank you! This video was very helpful. We tried looking up the difference and it was very unclear.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! Thank you for a really Good video!
Greatings from Finland!💕
Thanks for watching!
I love the dog switches his ear...😂
Very informative thanks for sharing
This helps. Thanks! I love your doggie!
There is movement and not just holding in yoga as well in a a Vinyasa Yoga Class
Very true in Vinyasa and other styles of Yoga as well. Yet there is still a difference between the flow of a yoga class with poses and Pilates exercises.
I agree they are different
Thanks this was pretty useful
Glad it helped
I agree , Pilates works for me, yoga does not. Also, I do not agree with the spiritual side of yoga.
Basically you are freaked about not being christian. No need for bullshitting.
Super helpful info. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I am impressed with your muscle control. You have such good posture
Thanks so much
Meditation and prayer are one and the same regardless of your spiritual beliefs. Yoga to me is just another form of exercise. I don't look too deep into anything beyond the physical benefits.
You are talking about asanas not yoga because yoga has much more deep meaning. We consider asanas as yoga. Asana is one of the major in yoga.
I love both!
Me too!
Thanks for share this video, you help me yo ser the differences
Glad to hear that!
Excellent explanation Thankyou from a new subscriber ❤️

Very helpful! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I'm an Indian and I just cannot get myself to like yoga! It's too slow and makes me sleepy. I love pilates. Leaves me with a spring in my step once I'm done.
Great to hear! Thanks so much!
Does pilates offer the same benefit of flexibility like yoga?
Really annoyed no ones answered this
Yes
Yes if you look closely most of postures in pilates are that of Yoga. Main difference is that Yoga is done slowly whereas pilates is a bit faster. I can say that because I have tried both.
You explained it really well.
Thank you! I am actually thinking about filming a version 2 to speak to some additional points.
Pilates gets me in better shape.
so does yoga
Yoga will get you in better shape and better health as well. People can't even believe how many of my health issues got better and reducing since i have been doing yoga. But whatever makes you happy.
@@Sansan-in4et how do you know for anyone
I have been doing Iyengar Yoga for a number of years, and after a class I feel calm yet energized, unless it is a "restorative" class, after which I feel quiet and peaceful.
I LOVE Iyengar Yoga. In fact that style of Yoga is how I fostered a love for yoga.
@@trifectapilates COOL!
I like doing Pilates in the morning and yoga in the evening
That's a great combo!
Do yoga in the morning 😅
Yoga pauses take a lot of strength to hold so I think I’m going to start off with Pilates first.
Good choice!
Has anyone ever told you you look like Hillary swank? Thanks for the video
No they haven't. I'm glad you liked the video
I'm sorry. Is there a cat laying down beside you? That's adorable.
My dog! If I leave the door open she'll usually make her way down while I'm filming.
I practice both but my yoga class is more dynamic and less about spiritualism and meditation while my Pilates class has some yoga aspects in it. I like the mixture well because I find relaxation in the movements of both classes. They have the right level of speed and awareness for me :)
I love the mixture as well! Thanks for leaving such a thoughtful comment.
Thank you
You're welcome!
Great video! Love the doggie! So cute!
Yoga is spiritual system and pilates is exercise based
Thankful for the information video. It would be better if you can speak not so fast . I start 20 min Pilate at home today beside take yoga class on Sat .
I'm so glad that you're starting Pilates, that's great. I do talk fast, good thing there's an option to adjust the speed of the videos.
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Thanks
Welcome
Is pilates can causes injures like yoga ? And can you please make video for pelvic floor exercises with pilates
Sad face.
My suggestion is to start slow with a beginning level class.
Lol
Once you give Pilates a try, let me know how it goes. There are so many Pilates classes to choose from on this channel.
Most of these are in yoga
My weight is 95...I have to lose 25 kg..how much time does pilates will take...to achieve my target
Please reply mam
And I am on strict diet
NO SET TIME ☹️
Personal results may/ WILL very .
LOTS of things contribute to "how long does it take to lose "XYZ" Weight.
It is more complicated than that!
It is based on a number of things but important ones to mention are....
Results very based on your past eating habits ;
I know! sounds weird but think about it, how has your body been taken care of or was it abused and for how long?
Your current eating habbits is a huge contributor, what have u changed? what's different ?
Think about this - your fairly UN healthy you don't normally exercise and you go on a crash keto diet and run for a hour a day ... YOUR GOING TO DROP QUICKER than if
Your fairly healthy and you go counting calories and all yoga
and mostly your own body, your body will digest , absorb, burn and get rid of -at it's own pace.
Each body is different
to lose its all of YOU!
Sorry I don't have a more direct time frame for you.
But if anyone does they are lying lol
So for me it's Pilates in the morning yoga in the evening 😀
Good choice!
Can we do Pilates everyday or do we need rest days? Can we do Pilates for the same group of muscles(abs, thighs) everyday or do we need to vary the muscle group everyday?
Great question. As long as you have variety so you're not repeating the same thing day after day, you can do Pilates frequently.
@@trifectapilates Thank you
I guess it just depends on the type of yoga class you are taking( hatha, ashtanga maybe yin there are so many different variations) I get a great work out from alot of yoga but I'd say pilates definitely works my legs Alot more and in different muscle groups than yoga typically does....so it's a toss up for me I enjoy both!
I’m with you there! I enjoy both as well. It depends on a variety of factors for me though I would say I move with Pilates more.
Can I do both of them together???
Yes, there are fusion classes.
I am going through stress is yoga better option than Pilates for me?? I do need relaxation and energy??
This is really a personal preference. You can give both a try and see what one you prefer.
That is correct. Pilates isn't a spiritual practice where Yoga is.
Thanks for the Video, it's a short an helpful explanation of both activities!
I have a question about pilates: I train calisthenics and am looking for a sport I can practice on my off day. This should help me to improve my mobility. Is pilates suitable?
You’re welcome! Pilates does help to improve mobility if you focus on that throughout the workout.
@@trifectapilates Allright, thank you! =)
The dog lol
Now I have to close the door when I film
nice!
Thanks!
Xx
