Every day when the sun went down millions across the South would tune in to the blowtorch of the nighttime airwaves, WLAC 1510 AM Nashville, Tennessee to hear radio disc jockey John R. play those great old blues records. Takes me back to the late 1950s when high school and college kids, both black & white, were listening to Jimmy Reed and other greats of the time. Two of the competing sponsors on his show where Randy's Record shop and Ernie's Record shop. Both would have sales packages going on constantly, pitching their specials for the month.
Of course there was no internet, so, those Clear Channel powerhouse radio stations ruled the entertainment media of the day. One of the big things among those kids was to turn their car radios up, and cruise around through the burger joints, so everone would hear them coming and going.

Agreed!!! Sorely underrated compared with other greats such Muddy Waters.
Jimmy's take on blues has much more widespread appeal, and seems more soulful and melodic.

@@bluegtturbo Jimmy will never be classed as underrated to me, he is the greatest of them all. If I want to listen to the blues, there are few others I would rather listen to than the Big Boss Man, he is the blues.

Lightinin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and many more were always on the "Record Player" in them days. I learned how to play Blues Harp at 12 years old and never looked back. R.I.P. Grandad.

You are lucky, none of my nephews or nieces care. I grew up in the Free State, nothing but corn, cows and forgotten train tracks up there. I grew up lonely in one of those overly Christian homes where music was seen as evil. Thank god I found the blues after I left my mothers devouring gaze. The harmonica has saved my life over and over again. Jimmy Reed is awesome. Long live the blues.

My dad was a white teenager in California in the 1950s. He loved the blues and early rock ‘n’ roll. Doo-wop through Chuck Berry, little Richard, Fats Domino the list goes on and on.. when it came to the blues I think Jimmy Reed was his favorite. One of his prize album is Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall. He has hundreds of albums and 45’s from the 50’s . I didn’t always get along with the old man, but I think him all the time for my love of good music.

It is always great to hear Jimmy - the "President Of The Blues"! Some of these cuts are alternate takes, Little Rain & Signals Of Love for instance, also Honey Where You Going. Every version of Honey, Where You Going that I can find on youtube is the same alternate take.. The single version is much better - more together. It was the other side of Little Rain. I know I am being picky just mentioning the alternate takes, but I am a Jimmy Reed fan since the mid 50's - have all the singles, etc. I couldn't have made it through my teenage years without JR.

Ah, I see what you did there! When you spell “boss” backward, you get “ssob.” 😄
And you’re absolutely right about Jimmy Reed! He’s a legendary blues musician known for his distinctive style. Reed hailed from the Mississippi Delta and later made his way to Chicago. His songs, like “Bright Lights, Big City,” “Baby What You Want Me to Do,” and “Big Boss Man,” have left an indelible mark on blues music. Interestingly, Chicago blues owes much to the Delta blues tradition, and Reed’s influence is felt in both. 🎸🎶
If you’re interested, you can check out some of Jimmy Reed’s classic blues tunes. Songs like “Ain’t That Lovin’ You Baby” and “You Don’t Have to Go” showcase his signature shuffle rhythm. It’s fascinating how artists like him shaped the blues landscape! 🎵🔵

I suppose "Take Out Some Insurance" was his first crossover hit, because it was the first Jimmy Reed recording I heard on Top 40 radio stations. I still have the Rocking With Reed album I bought that summer of 1959, and many others. My favorite? "Going By The River," parts 1 and 2.
