I fed my chickens this and now 3 are in college 2 have joined a gym and 4 have gotten into crafts they also have a games night 2 times a week .this is the biggest thing since machinery automation
I ferment oat groats, spelt, sorghum, barley, millet, and buckwheat mixed together in a large crock with a lid. The mix of grains makes it a more complete feed with the proper protein percentage for laying hens, as well as vitamins. All these grains are fairly inexpensive in bulk. I grow some of them myself. When I scoop out the “mash”, I measure it out so that each chicken can have up to 6 ounces. I add oyster shell and granite grit, flaxseed, and kelp to the mash just before putting it in their feeders. I use multiple feeders so that none is spilled on the ground and all the chickens get a fair share in spite of the pecking order. The girls also get plenty of pasture, bugs, and vegetable greens - and the occasional mouse they catch. If you feed this way, you don’t need to buy any commercial feed.
@@mariegraf2896 Yes, but I would coarse-grind the grains first and make sure that the overall protein content is at least 16% for chicks, since they need more protein for growth Use chick grit in the feed (small amounts), and don't add any oyster shell until the chicks start to lay eggs at about 18 weeks of age. Make sure your chicks are vaccinated and kept quarantined from any older birds for a full six weeks if you do not use medicated commercial feed. Both chicks and adult birds should always have food available rather than being fed at set times.
I would love to be able to do that, get oat groats, spelt, sorghum, barley, millet, and buckwheat. But there is no granary around me. I can tell you know what you are talking about. Witch of those you mentioned, will they get protein from, now that they don't receive layer pellets ?
@@MrDavew402 You can buy the grains in bulk online (usually in 25-lb. amounts) from multiple sources. Oats and spelt are great protein sources, but my girls also get plenty of greens and bugs from out in the pastures. Many insects are more than 50% protein. The fermentation of the grains makes them more digestible and makes their nutrients more available for the chickens' bodies to use. They also need calcium grit and stone grit to digest grains and insects and provide a slow-release form of calcium. Be careful about giving too much calcium to a rooster. Roosters need protein, but most layer formulas have too much calcium for males and they can get painful gout and kidney problems.
There are three ways to do this for chickens/ducks. Ferment the grain (I add cracked corn and a tiny splash of apple cider vinegar to help ferment), sprouts and full grown fodder
I just inherited 5 giant prepper vats of grain. I didn’t know what to do with it till i saw this vid! Thanks! * Also I bet apple cider vinegar would be awesome to add to the bucket.
Excellent vid. I am new to keeping poultry and I heard distant wisphers of fermented feeding, seemed like witch craft. I now understand thanks to your brilliantly informed vid
Thanks for the details! I'm wondering if or how often you need to clean the fermenting bucket? Also, do you offer dry layer feed all day as well or are you rationing how much feed they get? Thanks again!
They are very aggressive when you feed them. That's because they aren't fed enough quantity or to seldom daily. If you stop your "fermentation" process, which is actually germination, and let the seeds grow for 7 days you will be able to feed them fodder which is far more cost effective and nutritious. 4" of green fodder in 8 days. Watch them tear that up! All you need to do is keep the root system moist. Trust me you will be far happier.
HEY ENGLISH DUDE, in canada we call that wheat? ive never seen barley w/o the husk? barley has a yellow husk on it, unless things are different in aussie /english land?
Thanks! My girls eggs have calcium deposits on some. What are they lacking? I give them layer pellets, scratch and sunflower seed and food scraps. Thanks!
Thanks I am desperate to get into a routine with them. I only have 5 girls. I wanted to get them onto kitchen scraps and they love brown bread.i know tho is not good for them. What would you recommend? They are 13 weeks yet..getting bored with the growers.. Morning..barley..and water Starve them from growers for the rest of the day.. Early evening.. growers...and water..before bedtime? Then at 18 weeks..replace growers with layers and carry on with the fermented barley? Also... can they eat the dead flies and wasps? Don't they carry disease?
How long will the fermented grain stay edible for the birds if you don't take from it daily? Also, I live in Switzerland and our local feed store (Landi) doesn't have much of a selection of grains like you get there in the UK. Do you have a website or any ideas where barley for instance would be sold? I'm not from Europe so this has been an adventure finding what I need for my chickens and ducks. Thanks!
i wonder if this is similar to feeding them duckweed? i think u make duckweed by throwing in big flat trays with an inch or water and it sprout s and you feed it to chickedn when its about 3 inches high.
I have been fermenting food for a long time for my chickens. This is the first time I’ve had to ferment inferior feed because I haven’t been able to source what I need, including the grains. But it’s not over until it’s over I’m still looking and I’m running to find sources. Now I need money, I cannot work because of health restrictions, it is only temporary.
I just ferment layer grain feed, but I do also offer sprouted grains and dry grains as well, so that there is a variety of states. I have what I call a feed bed, where I throw all food types ,including vegetable scraps in, except for dry grains and they scratch it all in and mix it all up for me and it sprouts and composts etc etc. It's an experiment that has worked for me👍
Your chickens are starving, I leave food out all day, you have let them get too hungary, I don't mean to sound rude. Though my chickens run to me for treats, they don't get into such a frenzy. I ferment their layers too, have you tried it, they just love it. Thanks for encouraging fermenting chicken grain, it's best for their health. All the best x
Hey, thanks for your comment. Fermenting is great!! My lot do have access to feed all the time - I have two treadle feeders of layers in their shed. But as you can see, they go nuts over the ferment!
I get heaps of spent grain from the brewery like wheelie bins of it, trying to figure out a way to store it, that's not freezing or redrying i think this might work but become alcoholic rather fast cuz its already fermented
I think the only way to save it for later is to dry it out. you can store it dry basically free. anything else is going to cost money to store it. dont worry the chemicals are in there just missing the water. well good enough. if you get the food for free why worry. just dry it out and store it in boxes bags anything just keep mice and rats out of it. and other animals. you must secure it. a metal 50 gallon bucket with huge black bag would keep it off the metal and clean. conrector babs I think they come in 50 gallons. you can sell your free stuff to me. i will pay cash on delivery to new england. hahahaha. you got it made.
How long can you use the water? Do you empty it of fermented grain before adding more grain, so that you don't serve grain at different stages of fermentation? Can the chickens benefit from the fermented water with the dead bugs in it? Thank you...
I never entirely throw all the water away, I keep using it for the fermentation process. Kept in a warm place, the grain only takes a couple of days to fully ferment. I have a couple of buckets on the go so as one is almost empty, the other is coming in. And yes, I feed any dead bugs to the them too.
You can add more grain to older grain. If it ferments too much I'm guessing too sour they avoid it somewhat. It depends on temperatures mostly. Faster in summer. I'll rinse the grain in some fresh water if it seems too sour. Hardly ever any such problems though.
That's simply not true. My batches take at least 3 days for the fermentation process to start - if I swapped the water every 3 days I'd just have swollen corn but not ferment. Also, the water itself is full of the good stuff ... B vitamins, enzymes etc. Stirring ensures all the corn ferments and topping up removes the chances for mould and bad bacteria because theres always a water barrier between the grain and the air. I'm happy you've found a way to suit you, but this process suits me and my birds just fine.

Oats contain beta-glucans, which can cause digestive problems and sticky litter when fed to poultry.

@@susantaylor8507 I get my seeds from the local feed mill. I don't know if tractor supply has any seeds like wheat, oats or barley.

Woa so much help for me. Rhanks for sharing... Keep em coming. Greatings from the tribal natives of the Philippines.
If your just feeding barley then you’d get more nutrients if you sprouted half and fermented half. It would give them a variety also
SShalom! I so much enjoyed your teaching on Fermented Grain. Thank you and blessings to you and yours!
Great video can’t wait for the next one keep up the good work
My friend Flora use to tell me stories of her Fathers homemade moonshine and the drunk chickens🤣. It’s cocktail hour for the hens!
This automatically increases the quantity of feeds eg...soaking 3kg will result in 5 kg

@Hunchoz x its hydroponic fodder u can harvest within 5 days for chickens

One of your great video and very informative like always. Just a one question. Can you add maize in it too ? And will it be more beneficial? Thanks
Yes,maize is rather better than wheat as it contains more protein

HEY ENGLISH DUDE, in canada we call that wheat? ive never seen barley w/o the husk? barley has a yellow husk on it, unless things are different in aussie /english land?
looks like wheat but it is likely a "Pearled barley" no husk, so it will not sprout

Great video, thank you! I have a follow up question: Can you do this with any grain? Corn, sorghum, wheat?
Does fermatation work better in darkness or in light.?
I think spouting( without soil) barley would be better... they get to eat the 3-4 inch green spout n the kernel including roots.
Nice to share. I give my chickens sprouts of grains. What you think about that?
The thing about this system is it helps them staying hydrated especially in warmer climate im considering feeding my meat birds when I get them
Great idea & thanks for the tips on how the process works. Do you feed this to your Quails too?
I do. All the birds get it. :)
this is awesome. it might save me some energy and time i used to cut banana peelings for the birds. barley is rare in Uganda but I shall try wheat...
Thank for details .WE CAN use over grain like corn

Is this wheat or barley?
some people have more chlorine and fluoride in their water, will that slow the fermentation?
It shouldn't but if you retain the fermented water to start new batches off it wouldnt have an effect
