    Free tiller but only works when in forward gear. All others do nothing and cannot even shift it into the forward with tines as the rod will not move. Took it all apart and will replace grease and gasket and see if works. my selector shaft was stuck, took the whole box apart etc, all clean inside. I just needed to work external and heat and spray the shaft with a peregrinating oil. Just knock out the captive pin that holds the top part on, heat, lube, knock it , repeat till free.

    I worked on one of these gearboxes years ago, broken drive chain to the tires,
    Mayor problem was getting the wheels off the axles, but with enough time effort and heat from a torch,
    I finally got it,
    Still running today, I just filled gearbox with grease
    I keep my tiller in the barn so it did not have rust and water inside gearbox,

      I just snapped my primary drive chain which is smaller than the other chains. Did you notice a crazy amount of slack in the thicker chain that goes from the primary drive sprocket to the tine sprocket? I’m wondering if that’s a precursor for why my drive chain snapped. Thanks

    I just picked one up and it drives forward & reverse perfectly fine. It will engage the tines but as soon as there is any resistance whatsoever to the tines they stop and you get an odd, i don't want to say grinding, but almost a grinding noise. Any idea?

      There is a ball detent and a compression spring that is suppose to hold pressure to keep the machine in gear. I believe the spring is way to light. I actually had to clamp a vise-grip on the shifting linkage to keep mine from popping out of gear.

      This is the same model, manufactured by MTD. The Husqvarna 700DRT is another tiller that uses the same gear case/frame. The gear selector is likely the problem

    Beware of the Cub Cadet RT 65 tiller! Parts are Very pricey! If the tine shaft goes bad; or the shaft bearings do;;; you must split the whole gear box due to the shaft sprocket being welded on. And the bearings are installed from the inside.

    @corey Slater we got ours from www.searspartsdirect.com/ it was the cheapest after shipping for us but if just get the model number off the sticker (for the tiller not the motor) and google there are a few other places that come up that have the diagrams and part numbers.

    How do u check grease in gear box, or can u drill a hole in the top part of gear box and make a place to add oil, or just tap add a grease surt add pump grease in be better than no grease and getting water in it.. thanks great video 👍

    • @BigRedFishDad
      @BigRedFishDad  7 лет назад +3

      I suppose you could do any of those but it shouldn't need anything. The reason ours had so much water was because there was not a gasket. The guy we bought it from took it apart and looked at it decided to not fix it and then let it sit outside for a year. The bolts were not even tight.

    Hey guys I have a ariens rear tiller and if you lift the machine off the ground I can push the tires back and fourth. question is; how is the axle connected to the sprocket in side? its broken down and shaft has rubber piece attached but that's not attached to the sprocket.thanks for any helpWalt

    • @BigRedFishDad
      @BigRedFishDad  8 лет назад

      inside is a bunch of gears and sprockets and a couple chains they all work together. depending on what gear you select it moves the wheels forward or reverse or both wheela and tines. I have two other videos that show the inside and gears better.

    I have one that I put into the barn about 3 years ago and it ran perfectly fine. 3 years later it starts right up but I can't get it to shift from neutral into any of the gears. Should I just fill it up with grease or do you think it's something more?

    • @akbychoice
      @akbychoice Год назад

      Likely rusted inside. I have mine apart now because it broke the time drive chain. So far I have pulled out 7 needle bearings. 4 different parts#’s of bearings. Poor design allows water and grit to get inside the case. The factory grease is clay based. Till recently I had never heard of clay based grease. I’ll be putting marine grease in once I get new bearings.

    Hi, I'm working on the same tiller but I'm having a problem separating the case. Was there any lock ring or something around the axle that turns the wheels? I'm just trying not to bend the case.
    Thanks

    • @stanp6383

      Old coinchaser your wheels are rusted on. Take a piece of wood or something go to the one side put it under the gear box then into the opposite wheel. Then hammer. Could add some lubricant like pb blaster
