New Zealand is known for having a small population. Many leave to find opportunity elsewhere, while others build a life in the place they were born. These people can become a big fish in a small pond or, if they’re lucky, an even bigger fish in the international pond. But is it possible to take a dip in both ponds? How do you make a name for yourself by staying in the same place? Where do you find the resources to create one of the most influential motorbike designs that inspired the racing world? Today on Past Gas, we’re talking about John Britten, the mechanical engineer and backyard designer who created the iconic Britten V1000 in his small hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand.

Finally you guys did a motorcycle episode with Jerry
You guys got to buy the video that his family put out. It's amazing and will completely blow your mind away even more when you see just what kind of mind this man was. Phenomenal.
No one laughed when James said “look how sharp their teeth are” that almost made me choke on my lunch break
I saw a Britten at the motorcycle museum in Solvang California 2 years ago
More episodes with Jerry and Justin please.. great episode Gents
The energy Jerry brings is contagious! Great ep 👍
To add to Jerry's comments about the Super Twins classes of racing and Bears class, the World Super Bike rules gave Twin cylinder bikes a cc (1000) advantage over the 4cyl bikes (750). So lots of manufacturers jumped on this and built V Twin Super bikes as well as smaller companies and people..
I was waiting for this episode.... but fxck me! you guys talk so much sxit during the episode that gets hard to follow the story... i love the accent imitation and stuff but sometimes i feel like loosing interest with so much sxit talk...
Love John's story, ive seen his bike in person at the Tepapa Museum in Wellington... and when you are in front of it, thinking about how it was made... idk, you kinda feel something in the air around... the colours pop up at the distance when you are walking through the museum. Its very inspiring. When you are in your mid 30s thinking that "might be too late for..." or you wished you've started "that project" that's been in your head for years... You can still do it, fail and learn about it.
Stories like this one and Burt Munro are amazing.
More Jeremiah! great episode and awesome subject. Great to have an engineer's viewpoint on the technical stuff. ❤
Lets Go Wink Wink Nation! And Welcome Jeremiah! Im into bikes as well so its cool having you on board! Is there a video of Nolan and Joe went dirt biking with you Jerr? I would LOVE to see that! I honestly think you should put more bikes on Donut! I just LOVE Jeremiah's laugh! It definitely contagious. I have an RC51, its not light, its uncomfortable, it doesn't have the top speed, but I would never get rid of this notable V-Twin Race Bike! Holy Shit the Britton V1000 cost $100,000! Whaaaa?
the rhys darby impersonation at 19:30 is spot on
I really like the motorcycle content! Wish they would do more of it!
Send jer to see that dude in Brooklyn!

The Vincent black shadow uses the engine as a stressed member and were wobbly but fast
Four definitely ties it together. I feel like I laughed a lot more this ep.
Spill the beeeeannnns 27:16
May I suggest an episode on Erik Buell? Another motorcycle designer with a similar mindset on design
Very cool
Kiwis don't talk like Australians.
They sound like a cross between English and Aussie s accents, Ive never heard anyone in America be able pull off a Kiwi accent
Yes it's called a magneto and it's been on motorcycles and cars from the beginning
The twins class got huge weight break and was lighter than the four cylinders that everyone was using and Britten used this to his biggest advantage and after Britten did it then the Japanese 🏯 brought out their bikes like the RC 51
I love Jerry's laugh. 😂😅😊
Looool this perfect 29:20
finally u guys do a podcast about bikes
"The world's fastest Indian" would be great!
We covered Burt Munro recently - check out episode 203
James casually turning into dobby 😭
The twin cylinder bikes could weigh less than four cylinders but didn't have the horsepower to beat them and the Britten was the first to have both
