Deep Sand Whoops and Rocks on My 2024 KTM 790 Adventure + Tusk 2 Track Tires Sand Test

- I wanted to take my KTM 790 Adventure out on some fun forest roads with gorgeous scenery. The rest of the group wanted to ride something more difficult on their dual sport motorcycles. I lost that particular competition. So, we headed out to the local OHV area to tackle some sand, whoops, and embedded rocks on my brand new 2024 KTM 790 Adventure.
I was SHOCKED at how well this big ADV bike did on sand. I am not a fan of sand riding especially on adventure bikes and the 790 Adventure handled it like an absolute champ. I was blown away by the 790 Adventure sand performance and honestly started taking on harder lines and riding faster and faster as the ride went on. This bike is very impressive so far.
This was also the first real off road test of the Tusk 2 track tires and the first time I've had the 2 track tires in sand. They did amazingly well. I had all the traction I could want and had no problems turning and navigating the deep sand, whoops, or the technical rocky sections. I'm digging these Tusk ADV tires so far.

Thank you for the 790 content!
Finally thank you for riding the new bike!
Thanks Ben for that great videos. Nice to see the KTM performing well. Glad you’re enjoying it.
I really wish KTM would get their cam thing figured out. I think it's fair to say their ADVs are the best in terms of offroad performance and handling, but with the cam issues I just find it hard to trust them. And I'm buy no means a KTM hater. I have a 701 that I love very much, and the LC4 engine is fairly bulletproof. But they really need to get the LC8 figured out, it's been like 5 years of the same cam issue and nobody knows exactly why it happens. KTM sometimes does warranty fixes on it and sometimes doesn't. It's just a really silly thing because the 890(and 790) platform is so good, but the reliability aspect just shoots it all down. I hope they get it figured out by the time I'm ready to upgrade lol.
I am in the market for a touring/occasional off road bike. The Norden Expedition ticks ALL the boxes that I have, but I haven't seriously considered it at all due to reliability issues. Its a shame really, but the worst thing is a bike you cant trust. I am probably going to go with an Africa Twin AS or a Tiger 900 Rally Pro instead.
Yeah I've heard rumor that the Chinese made bikes are actually better but there's no way that's true, right? They don't have the best reputation for metal quality. Between the cam thing and the dirt ingestion issues, it's hard to trust one of these long term, for sure.
I've have a 2020 790r from new, never had an issue with it, 23000 miles on, use it for trail riding, rally racing and touring, checked valve clearance at 19000 miles all good, no cam wear, great bike, also own a T7 but the ktm. Is way more fun to ride👍
@neilcollinson6540 I've met people who have similar stories to you and I've met people who are on their 2nd or 3rd engine who lost their cams at 10k miles.
@@Michael_Shay maybe but I do think the cam issue is also related to premature wear of the clutch ie no free play, hence wear and contamination of oil and oil jets getting blocked with clutch debris, happened to many people I know, so keep an eye on clutch free play and change your oil and filters every 6000 miles, that's all I've done and works for me, many pictures of cam wear are all oil starvation symptoms 👍
You're getting me hyped to get back out on the forest roads when I get to the States!
Great to ride with you man!
Audio is great. Kool video. Rockymt did all of us a solid. I will shop them first. They went beyond what was required.
I bought my 790 a couple months ago. Just an awsome bike. Its everything you stated. That 790 will make some time on a BDR.
The little canyon at Cline Butte is so cool!
Great video-felt like I was there pls Bring back the Celtic music!
LOL...DRZesus.....love it.
I wish you said more about what the suspension was DOING. Does it feel hard, soft, compliant etc. ? Does it bounce over obstacles ? ... or does it feel like it's just absorbing obstacles ? Have you adjusted the suspension (damping clicks, preload etc.)? ... or do you think that your weight just suited the spring rates etc. ? If so, what made it give you the confidence that it did?
How `bout a followup video expanding upon these questions? ... just a suggestion
Ok hold up, as a Norden owner, I want to hear more about the Norden with its second engine?!?
I wonder how that Norden is already on its 2nd motor. I’m at 38k miles on mine and its going great. I am about to do my valves for the second time and i’m very interested to see what’s inside!
Rally mode with the MSR in 1 and throttle in rally and MTC off is the way to go!
Why not just turn it to 0?
If your cams survive to 20k miles, this is my next bike.
3:26 hey I know that guy!! Lol
you should do a tear down once you're done testing the bike to see if the cam wear issue has been addressed!
I'm hoping after some time with this bike you compare it to the other bikes you have tried in this class.
Hoping you can test ride a CFMoto 450MT soon
Just a question when are you going to test the ktm 390 adventure, I drank the ktm coolaid after buy one and had to get a 790 this year and every time i get on that 390 im amazed how light its, would be fun to see what you think of the 390
Is that a Garmin XT2? Thinking of buying one for both on and off road.
Any plans to upgrade the suspension?
790 is a god bike but I’m on my DRZ for a year or two. 😊 DRZesus says ride the 1250GS if I feel inferior.
A re-do review of the KTM 390 adv may show that the 390 is the better performance for the money adv motorcycle than the 790. Also with the new 2025 model 390 Adv soon to hit the US market such a review will allow a fresher contrast between the old 390 & the new 390. The 390s may prove to be more than enough performance for majority of riders both on & off the road, - esp. for the money.
Nice riding video.
That could be from FINLAND.
Greetings from here. 🇫🇮
Ps.I would not use mute button, I would just try to say something while riding with you...
...that could be for both😂
Does it feel similar to the Norden off-road? Not much weight difference if I recall, but probably some differences in suspension and possibly power delivery.
very similar
Where is this
What ohv trail are you at ?
You talked about your tires a bit... do you ever lower your pressures when you reach the dirt portion of your ride? And then air back up for the ride home on pavement?
I ride a KLR with Shinko 705s. I have a portable air conpressor that I run off the bike. 100% of my rides involve highway before I get to pretty tame hard packed gravel forestry roads.
I haven't been airing down personally but maybe I should?
I do not believe in airing down on big bikes. The traction gains are minimal and I have heard and seen too many people getting pinch flats and denting rims on these big heavy bikes. Keep them inflated to protect the rim and/or the tube.
The guy on the Norden in this video (John) has had issues with his tires coming off the bead in rocky crap like this, even.
@@DorkintheRoad got you. Thanks.
there are huge gains in traction and comfort if you ride street tire pressures. This is big mistake.
The way to go is compromise pressures, or airing up/down for longer sections of only dirt or only road.
1.8bar is the magic number for me on AT. Anything above 1.9bar and you have terrible off-road performance unless u have true knobbies like mt21.
Compromise bikes,.tires, then why not pressures.
Never observed any negative handling effects onroad unless way under 1.5bar.
Bent rims is extremely overblown issue on the nets.
Aw man i wanted to see you do some hill climbs hah
Yeah I'm getting more confident but not THAT confident ;)
You probably get this question a lot dork, but any chance you'd ever consider picking up a proper two stroke? I just think I'd make you feel like a flipping hero on stuff like this. So light and flickable, and I'd think you'd have a blast.
I've got a free suspension coming off a friends upgraded Nordon that I'll put on my 790. I'm wondering if it'll make much difference!
Nice upgrade!
@@DorkintheRoad I think so! it'll change the rake angle a little bit but kind of assuming that could be both good and bad in an evens out kind of way.
What OHV is mentioned at the start of the video. I think I hear "Climb Beach OHV" but could not find that when I searched. I am in Oregon and always looking for new places to ride.
Cline Butte
What are whoops?
Does the 790 have the same cam trouble as the 690 and 890?
690 doesn’t have cam trouble. It had rocker arm issues with the bearings up until the 2015 models. After that they are pretty reliable. Jury is out on the 2023 and after 790
Does the bike have a steering damper from the factory?
Yes
Im surprised how stable it is below 20mph. My drz doesn't really start feeling good until 25. That's in Michigan sugar sand though.
Preach ! My old worn out 60/40 tires were better in MI sand than my new K270 Kenda's , they just dig.
@@jamesgeorge4874 Michigan sand is difficult to master. I still tip over at least once every big ride in deep sand from riding too slow.
@@nicholasc1781 after a heavy rain it does some weird stuff, too. I've went 2 feet to the side of a puddle, to find 6 inches of quicksand, boy howdy, that gets you on top of the bars like grabbing two handfuls of front brakes!
If you want to figure how to ride a 450 pound adventure bike in soft sand load up and come to my part of Florida. Sand roads is just about all we have off-road. That's why I'm looking for a Dual Sport that is a 100 pounds lighter than my Transalp .
Careful you're starting to sound like one of them fast orange bois (one of us one of us)
How did the stock suspension perform on the rocky and whoops sections?
shockingly well (pun intended)
@@DorkintheRoad ah that’s good (or maybe bad?) to know. I have my KLR sus set up perfectly now and one of the barriers to getting a new bike is having to immediately throw a couple of k at it in sus upgrades haha
I'd be surprised, with the same tires, if you weren't able to ride that same terrain on your Transalp with confidence. As the Cranberries' song says: "it's in your head..." :-) You're just a much improved rider, I think.
Won't be long before I get to test that theory. Stay tuned.
@@DorkintheRoadyou wouldn’t prefer to have the most aggressive tires you could get on the Transalp for this sort of riding, something more like the Dsports?
Is there any chance I could get you to answer a genuine question about the MSR vs Klim jacket and pants you have reviewed? The video is 4 months old and I didn’t want to post there and get lost in the clutter.
the MSR gear is fantastic. Highly recommended. ;)
Yes Sir. I gathered that from your videos (both of them). What I really wanted to know is, do you actually own the Klim Carlsbad? I’d like to know how they really compare price not being a factor, because I’ve got an offer of a significant discount on the Klim getting its price MUCH closer to the MSR. If you had to choose MSR vs Klim with a much closer price what would your feelings be?
in my country, this ktm and transalp, are at the same price.also ktm gives 4 years warranty.i have decide to go for the transalp becouse i m not gonna do hard off roading, and also i want to keep it for years..Am i making a mistake?
Apply the same theory that works for last 40 years.
Japs - boring, no features or tech but reliable.
Euros- everything you need, high performance but ull always wonder if you get to destination. And expensive to own.
That's why AT is currently the best adv - it have that euro bikes features and performance (almost) but still bulletproof
I guess your in the big orange league now.....will he return to his humble roots, or has he gone to the orange side...stay tuned! Garth
A moderately experienced rider could do those "trails" (the only thing they don't have is bitumen) on a 1972 Honda CB750 whilst drinking a latte and watching a you tube video.
I bought the new 24’ 790 black! It’s so good! Will it last who knows? But ride the heck out of it until then. 😅
that is the question...
Dork in the road and big rock moto have the best motorcycle videos on youtube!!
So you hated the 690, but love the 790 🤔
Yeah. That is correct. They're very different.
Completely different bikes
Which absolutely makes sense. Lighter bikes especially singles sucks at everything other that tuff stuff.
Advs for the win
Welcome to the West! No mud out here. Dry, dusty, sand, rocks, and hard pack. Knobby tires and light weight should be your first "mods". Short story...Bud Ekins went to Europe to race his 500 Matchless in motocross in the early 1950s. A 200cc two stroke kicked his ass! Big ADV bikes and you are just asking for trouble. Just sayin.
Pl try aprillia pegaso 650 2002 in extreme conditions like deep water
