Bro, I couldn't find any video or online article which describes exactly what I have experienced in the past 1.5 years. I feel every single word you say in your video, even how you (we) got injured in the first place and what you (we) have learned from it . For me, I took almost 6 months off from doing any workout and it helped a bit. Now I am gradually recovering and training my strength. Hope you are now (almost) back to where you left off.

I tried all the exercises all of this stretches ibuprofen Aleve Tramadol Naproxen Doctors even offered me oxy Codeine and percocet. When it's that bad you can't even walk nor make it out bed Too much pain to go to sleep not even Take a shower or bath and driving is out of the question.

Kobi Timmons I'm in my 4 month. I could not sit for first 5 weeks. A few times I could barely get out of bed. Next week my doc will review my MRI and let know what he sees. In beginning tramadol and Norco did nothing to rid the pain but frozen oeas worked very well. Place a bag of peas inside a ziplock and then smash the peas flat, then freeze. I always have two bags in the freezer ready to go. Placing the bag of peas inside the ziplock eliminates sweating. Only using frozen peas and ibuprofen. I stopped stretching bcuz it seemed to make it worse. Best thing is for me to walk and stay in my back until my doc looks at the MRI. God bless. I hope I helped.

I'm gonna make a video soon, but here is what helped me the most, realizing it was inflammation pushing the nerve!!! Imagine your head being pulled up by a rope and slowly lean up and forward, experiment with your chin up and down. Oh yeah I also put two squeeze balls into a sock and kept it inside my pants attached to my belt and worked the muscle in my glutes and against the lower back muscles at every opportunity while at work, leaning into walls ect, sitting. After two weeks of this the pain just went away, about 90% the first week and almost all of it later. oh one more thing, I was massaging out the tightness in my thighs and then did a Achilles tendon stretch, but make sure your foot is relaxed, not off a step. wow what a difference when the foot is relaxed! Let me know if you try this, would love to hear that it worked for you !

I have a weird sharp glute pain when I handle anything over 80% on deadlifts. It is excruciating when I pull sumo. Good mornings can also cause flare ups. It doesn't go down the leg or anything. It's driving me nuts. Once it is aggravated, it stays that way for about a week.

Thank you so much for this informative video. I have been suffering for the last couple of weeks, not sure what triggered it. I had a bit of pain but it got worse after I did a few sets of stiff legged deadlift. I haven't stopped training, just that I'm constantly dreading the pain and not being as confident as I used to. I stopped doing the conventional deadlift and mostly stick to sumo deadlift. Your video gave me so much hope and it's always good to know that you're not the only one suffering. I'm currently working on strengthening my glutes, I guess it plays a big role. I didn't turn to any form of medication, I do stretch, post workout and ice it. Thanks once again, keep training, same goes for the others in comments section. Good luck and wish y'all a speedy recovery.

I had this issue for 8 years. I tried chiro, physio, they all helped at the time, but I never got anywhere near satisfactory relief. Then I stumbled upon IMS. Basically, they stick needles in your muscles, which makes holes in them, to get the muscles to release. This has helped tremendously! I had to go at least a few times before the muscles would release. I use to go once every 2 weeks, I am now at once a month. I've gone about 2 dozen times. Give it a try.

Thank you for your video, appreciate you sharing your journey living with piriformis injury. I have the same and it has been almost an year. I think I developed it from squats and it got worse after I started a new job which requires me to seat for a long period of the time. The pain was so severe at some point I had to be in strong pain killers as I couldn't seat or even move in bed. I feel a lot better now but the pain is there, I can tolerate but it put me off from squats which is my favourite leg exercise. I am still training legs but the result is always pain afterwards. I like what you said, to stretch more, I was like you I would stretch or warm up I just use to go straight to lifting, today I know how stupid that is and I learned the hard way the importance of stretching. Thank you again for your video.

reverse hypers and back extensions for reps with very short rest periods, basically go for the most intense burning pump you can imagine, shove as much fresh blood through the muscle as possible. go with the largest range of motion on those exercises you can at first and work your way up, they hurt like a SOB at first but its the only thing that worked for me.

Hey bro, thanks for the vid. I suspect to have the same thing due to similar symptoms and have been struggling with this for 1.5 years now, have seen multiple chiros and fysical therapists, with little success. I also stretch a lot.
Do you also suffer from inflammation in your lower back muscles, mostly your QL's after training?
I don't have any issues while working out when it comes to pain, just after cooling down it starts to flare up most of the time.
My glute on the side that is affected also activates not as much as it used to. Even though I'm right handed my left glute used to get better activation compared to the right one before this injury, now it is the other way around. You also have issues with glute activation on the affected side?

I overloaded the leg press in an endorphin fuelled rage 2.5 years ago. My recovery has gone back and forth since then. English NHS didn't diagnose properly and I've only just worked out that it's poriformis syndrome. I'm on the road to recovery with more understanding. I've gone from Chiro which was good then aggravated it to deep trigger point/sports massage. The piriformis stretch has to be very gentle and worked up or the muscles spasm and its back to ice and ant inflamatories. I think strengthening it gently is probably more effective than stretching it as very easy to go too far with this little muscle. I'm now using specific piriformis related yoga (yoga international online.) Also referring weight to the outer feet and heel fires the piriformis muscle. Not tilting pelvis etc, looking at sleep and drive posture. One day I'll be able to lift and cycle again but not before I'm 100 percent ready.

I injured my right piriformis right after my last meet about 5 months ago. The injury is still there, however, I am able to squat and deadlift again. My strategy is to start with lighter weights and not push too far. If I go too heavy, then it definitely lets me know. I like your approach to the recovery process. I have been doing many of the same things you are doing as far as stretching and improving mobility. I have been spending a lot more time focused on strengthening the glute muscles as I feel those were weak and led to the injury. Now I am looking forward to my next meet in 8 months from now. Anyways, this video was great motivation and solid content! Thanks!

Piriformis syndrome had been getting progressively worse for me before I found out what it was. I'm a marathon runner and qualified to run Boston this Sept. I really want to do it and I've been taking what's now over a month off of running bc It seems to exacerbate it. So I'm looking to strengthen my piriformis / glut in general. I'm worried to squat tho, that's something I used to do on the regular and I hear that can cause the syndrome as well? That's a very similar movement to the kettlebell warm up you do. Are you sure that's a good thing to be doing? Stuck at home bc of Covid so I don't have a bar or a kettlebell anyways. Just some free weights and bands. Any suggestion are welcome!

  • @ivyhageman4746

I was specifically told not to roll my piriformis with a foam roller or ball. By my chiropractor and my massage therapist. What works best for me is doing assisted bridge with a yoga block under my sacrum, heat, turmeric, and rest. No part of the body is isolated. It's all connected. My quads and my psoas are also tight and under stress which is pulling everything from my lower lumbar to my pelvis out of line. More power to you that you can exercise this much with PS but for me, it upsets it even more. Good luck to anyone out there trying to heal piriformis syndrome.

    Dear Leo,
Thanks for your video. I’ve had the injury for about 3 weeks now. Firstly I’d like to say thanks for the tips on how to recover. It’s also very encouraging to see your recovery as my own recovery progress seems frustratingly slow.
I have some short questions that I would be happy to hear your answers to and opinions on the subject. The questions mainly relate to time and dealing with pain.
If the information helps, I am a soccer player, so my main aim is to be able to sprint, run and lift weights again (squats, deadlifts and lunges. The usual lower body exercised) free from the pain of the injury.
    1. You mentioned that you felt strength training I.e. weightlifting and leg days in particular were beneficial in your recovery. At what stage in your recovery did you begin to do strength workouts such as the one in the video? I also assume that you began very lightly and gradually increased the intensity of the workouts
    2. I would also like to ask if you are currently running/ doing sprint workouts and if so, how long it took you to do so pain free?
    3. You mentioned that you are still currently dealing with some pain. Would you find it painful while training like you have shown in the video or while running? Also would you say it is necessary to go through a pain barrier (within reason) while training? I ask because I don’t wish to exacerbate the injury through training as I find bending over and touching my toes to be an issue, like yourself.
    4. Also at what point in your recovery did you feel you were workout ready again? Or at what point did you feel you alleviated the pain to the extent that it was manageable enough for you to be able to train again like you have shown in the video?
Thank you in advance. Thanks as well for your video which was very helpful and informative. It was also good to get a benchmark for the injury too.
    Best wishes,
    Stephen

      1.
      1. I waited a month before I lifted. But as soon as
I started I realized that it actually helped a ton rather then hurt. Motion is
      lotion
      2.
      2. I was doing alot of elliptical work, and stair stepper work. Avoiding
hip flexion with bikes and rowers. No sprint work or running yet as I think that’s what caused the
      issue in the first place.
      3.
      3. Well I would listen to my body in regards to
pain barrier, worsening pain is usually not a good sign. Doing light squats,
lunges and band walks helped more than anything. I progressed in weight 5lbs
per week But with piriformis stretches and foam rolling would only end up
flaring the tissue up worse. Especially in the beginning. You gotta balance
rest, anti-inflammatories and exercise to the extent of the injury.
      4.
      4. Well it took 9 months overall before I could tie
my shoes. The first 4 months were absolute hell. Then I would have days where it
felt ok and back again. The main thing I noticed was that If I was active the
day before ie: walking, working out; I would feel better the following day. Just
keep moving, keep a workout, rest and medication schedule.
      Good luck Stephen!

Hey Leo! I think I have what you have. I have pain in my glute and it feels like the sciatic nerve, but I’m not sure. I’ve had it for about 3 months now and it’s getting a little better. I’m still limping when I’m walking and it hurts to get out of bed. Not sure what I should do. I am currently going to a chiropractor, I think it’s helping but I’m not sure I still feel the pain a little. Let me know what you think.

Leo Panda, I'm dealing with many of the same symptoms for the past month. Were you able to work your hamstrings, glutes, and lower back without increasing your injury/Piriformis inflammation? If so, could you elaborate on your specific hamstring warm-up? Btw, I'm trying to schedule PT right now, so I assure you I'm not trying to solely treat myself

I heard you shouldn’t stretch your Piriformis if you have long Piriformis syndrome, but instead strengthen it and your glute muscles. If one of your knees cave in during a relatively heavy squat and it’s also that glute that hurts it’s likely you might have long Piriformis syndrome. I just figured this out recently after years of pain. Starting to implement strengthening exercises hopefully they will work.

    Hello
I have been dealing with this injury for about 5 weeks already. I’m a mom and I know what it is to go through contractions but let me tell this is the most excruciating pain ever. I do bodybuilding competitions and I feel that those days are long gone. I can’t stand for more that 3 mins cause I start getting this horrible pain combined with muscle spasms, cramps and burning session from my butt all the way down to my toes.
It even got to the point where I had to go to the ER, they gave me Valium and Percocet but that only help for a little.
I know your video is a year old but can you tell me if you have gotten better or the pain still there but just not as bad?
    Thank you

    • @rnleopando
      @rnleopando  5 лет назад +2

Hey I feel your pain!. Its much better now, along with keeping active and being flexible.. The thing that helped the most (but was also my last resort) was medications. I eventually went to my md and requested 3 things. Gabapentin for the nerves/sciatica, tramadol for the pain and lastly a 7 day course of prednisone which is a steroidal anti inflammatory. The prednisone helped alleviate the piriformis inflammation and its stranglehold on my sciatic nerve. If nothing else works I would talk to your doctor about this and they would know best.. but let me tell you after 11 months of pain that i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, this regimen did the trick!

Yera - I hope that PS is now a long way away and you're back to 100%. I'm dealing with this for 8 weeks now (PS developed from my cycling). I've done physical therapy for the last three weeks. I think I'm turning the corner on this, but it's hard to know. I had a good day last Friday and Saturday, but then the two days that followed were not so good. I'm sure I overdid it. I'm able to walk more, and every step is encouragement to me. I never want this to happen to anyone. The pain at its height was unbelievably bad (it was evil). The only position I could assume to break this pain was to be flat on my back, but a complicating factor is muscle spasms of the hamstring and even on my back, I don't know how to make the pain disappear.

Hey Leo, have you ever had an MRI done? I only ask because a decade ago I thought I had “piriformis syndrome” but in reality I had a herniated disk. When speaking to a physical therapist I was told that piriformis syndrome is something that can theoretically happen, but most people have L5/S1 disk herniations. Not sure how that would affect rehab protocols, but something to consider. Your garage gym is my goal btw! 👍

    • @rnleopando
      @rnleopando  6 лет назад +2

thanks chowder. thanks for watching! no i did not have an mri, but all clues pointed towards PI. mainly how the pain would be alleviated when i lengthened the contracted muscle through excercise and stretching. I could literally feel a balled up muscle overlying my glute/hip and i didn't have lower back pain tbh. just sciatic pain distal to the contracted piriformis muscle. if the pain does not subside i will get an mri and do an update.

Not sure if I had pisiforms syndrome, but I had a bad pain on my lower back/top of my right buttock for months. Sleeping suck and moving around started to take a toll. When I hurt my knee I found this device called MARC PRO($650) or MARC PRO PLUS($960). Worth the money. Place those electro pads on my lower back and buttock. With in two hours of just relaxing and watching TV the pain was gone. Came back once since then, but did the same thing again.
