Hyundai isn’t playing it safe in 2022. Given that the space-age Ioniq 5 hit the ground running as one of the most desirable electric cars of last year, it’d be fair to assume that the new Ioniq 6 saloon would bear more than a passing resemblance to its crossover relative. But Hyundai has severed any visual links to the 5 with a streamlined design inspired by the Prophecy show car of 2020.
Packaging constraints mean that the production car isn’t as svelte as the concept, but its still-sleek looks will help it against the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 when it goes on sale this year. Thanks to the E-GMP platform’s 800V electrical architecture, the Ioniq 6 can charge at speeds of up to 350kW, enabling a 10 to 80 per cent top up in just 18 minutes. The entry-level model is powered by a 53kWh battery feeding a single rear-mounted electric motor to provide 267 miles of range. But the car we drove is the most potent version available - that is, until a hot Ioniq 6 N inevitably arrives.
For now, the flagship Ioniq 6 gets a 321bhp dual-motor set-up, a 77.4kWh battery and 362 miles of range on the WLTP cycle. Opt for the rear-drive model with the larger battery, however, and that streamlined body really pays dividends, with a claimed range of 382 miles, beating the Model 3. In this first-drive review, Yousuf Ashraf gets behind the wheel to see how the Ioniq 6 stacks up.

Looks like a cross between an old Saab and a Porsche 911! I like it…
Very good description
Two of the best cars/car manufacturers so that’s a huge compliment !
Mixed in with some old melty French styling, like classic Citroens. 👍
Thank you, I was just wondering, that rear end seems familiar. Mm
It grows on me every time I see it. Gives me those good old SAAB and Porsche 911 vibes as well… Great car
To be honest, I love the look of this Hyundai 😄. They have really been on the roll with all of these new models recently. Great review as always Yousuf :)
The Ioniq 5 is an abysmal software failure. It's like choosing a Gameboy.
@@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726 I've driven mine for 8000 miles now and can't say the software is great. But I can say that the drive quality, which to me is really what matters, is second to none in its class. Tesla has nothing on how this thing floats across the road. I'll take a great drive over fancy software any day.
Short vid but very informative. New presenter, Yousuf, is calm, confident and collected. Thank you for your initial first impressions, looking forward to a detailed breakdown of this amazing car
A great introduction to this car Yousuf. For what you get I guess it's reasonable value but as you say it'll be worth seeing how it drives in UK specification. Personally I think I still prefer the Ioniq 5 or it's sister car from Kia for practicality. Of course when we see and drive these cars in in real life (along with others) that's the time when a decision will be made.
Thanks Anthony. There's definitely an argument for the Ioniq 5 or EV6 - they're both a bit more versatile, but Ioniq 6's extra range might swing it. Looking forward to testing one in the UK either way!
Great review! Well presented, well shot, and I think the background music actually contributed to the feel of the video really well. Great job, guys! Also Hyundai really are crushing it these days
I find one way to improve the ride on road imperfections, in cars with very low profile tyres, is to change from manufacturer selected grip/ longevity prioritised OEM tyres to more compliant all-season tyres. It not the reason I change but is a noticable benefit and AE is a great place to find tyre tests
Yousuf presents well with personal experience with performance vehicles, clear diction, and obvious automobile enthusiasm. 😊
Great new presenter Yousuf. Looking forward to seeing more reviews from him.
Excellent reviewer. I was ready to walk when I was met with a new face (at least to me) @ Auto Express but I stuck it out and am glad I did. Relaxed, excellent pacing and detail. Look forward to more reviews to come from this gentlemen. =)
Thanks Patrick! Glad you stayed with us 🙂
Absolutely!
Don’t think I could work with the compromised rear / boot, and the exterior design isn’t to all tastes, but that RWD LR set-up is incredible… well done Hyundai!
Totally agree… for the money, this’ll be hard to resist for some buyers.
This might be a dumb question but I'm in the US, we aren't approved for the digital mirrors. Can I buy a car in a different country and have it shipped? I need those digital mirrors in my life lol
Where is the decibel meter so we can compare cabin noise. Where is the vibration meter.
Surreal to watch an English review done on my back yard. Thanks for the content.
Nice, cohesive, and to the point. You don't need a 25 minute video, when reviewing a car. This is more like it. Didn't think much of the Ioniq 6, when it first came out. But, it is growing on me.
One trick to make it look much better:
Turn the lights on.
The back just looks very plumb without the red lights. The big line makes it look A BIT more like a 911
Interesting to see that you took this video in Korea :)
I'm not a fan of the CLS looks but it could possible look nice in an estate / shooting brake format. Interior looks great and range will probably be real world 300+ on the bigger battery, so I'd be interested in that estate, should it come!
Great review- up there with Rory Reid lovely looking car 🚙
I like it. Worth mentioning, that the design everyone is complaining about is one of the most aerodynamic.
This looks like a cruiser with how they designed the outer frame. I'll definitely be eyeing this alongside the Ioniq 5
Lets see if they can make them in volume
I like this a lot!!! About time more car companies make more sedans, wagons even if they're electric or IC engine!!!
Waiting for the Kia “Stinger” version of this car!
I love the fact that companies are making everyday EV's. Otherwise everyone is so bothered about 0 to 60 times 🤷♂️
Looks like a mix of brands slapped together
Hope they make a shooting brake version
Reminds me of the old Citroën DS. Crossing a Saab turbo. Classic look
it looks like a concept car of late 90s early 00s, kind of showing the design directions for the 00s.. the concept of this model was much more reasonable than the final result.
This car design is so interesting to me. It's extremely modern but weirdly old at the same time? Idk if that makes sense. The roundness of the lights and back give me like old Mitsubishi vibes. But then the back of the car and profile are very Porsche to me. I love don't know if I like it or not - but yet I really want one haha
Can you tell me where you are test driving it? Looks beautiful!
S.Korea
@@jhl2783 I was hoping it was some undiscovered area of England... Thanks for sharing!
I'm going to buy this car! It looks awesome and that range!!!!!
Pogchamp!
Fabulous looking thing. I had a brief spell with a new Tucson, another cracking car. Hyundai are on fire right now.
When it will be available?
Tuesday, 26th of April, 2023.
Great car, but why isn't it a fastback? I just couldn't buy this as I need the versatility of a larger boot opening.
Great video on a great car! It's got a hint of 911 at the back, too. 😉
Thank you for pointing the white bezels in the 5. Hyundai please change that!
The issue is whose batteries are they using as if Samsung could be an issue like Samsung phones where the battery swells , but would still Korean than Chinese or Tesla
The Infiniti J30t is back!
Looks just like my 09 Hyundai Accent GLS! Mine is wine red.
Happy to see your review Yousuf! Best wishes from Seoul :-)
Thanks Simon!
Why... why it's not liftback 🙄😟
Outstanding thoroughness and presentation of this initial review
Love the review, love the car
The long term repair cost on these is going to be ridiculous lol
It looks like a Saab 900 turbo from the back. 🥰
Um what about the KIA EV6! Same E-GMP skate board. RWD 525km range. 0-100, 7 seconds.
0:47
the ioniq 6 is just around 1500USD more expensive than the ioniq 5 in Korea
Why does it have flappy paddles?
Stages of battery regeneration whilst breaking
Looks like the old Infinit iJ30 from the 1990s from the rear.
Great reviewer! Love the Ioniq 5 and perhaps this, too, but - damn - that upside-down-looking steering wheel in both is ugly.
From the front in particular, it looks quite a lot like the old Mazda 323F
Yes- with Saab 900 rear end!
the front is more of old Hyundai Tuscani.
Taycan eyes, old Mercedes CLS body, 911 rear. Looks nice together tho
Correction (from a former auto engineer): that thing under your right foot is called an "accelerator pedal". There is no throttle in that car (a throttle is used in an ICE engine control airflow).
I think most of us know that, but it's become a term that has carried over to EV's.- regardless.
Bigger things to worry about 😉
I find the looks underwhelming but quiTe like the interior.
I don’t like the looks at all. The N vision 74 (correct me if I spelled it wrong) on the other hand looks amazing!
This car took its styling from the 1997 Infiniti J30, it’s the best looking Hyundai car I have ever seen...
tribute to infiniti J30
love what Hyundai is doing but It just reminds me of a woodlouse
Can't get that out of my head now 😅. Hope I don't see a grey one in a hurry 👍. To me I will give credit for it not being an SUV. However it just looks like an elongated Porsche. Reminds me of some of the copycat Chinese cars that caused uproar over their design mimicry. It also looks as if it fell out of a cheap sci fi DVD film or game. But at least it isn't an SUV ( just a wood louse )
Don’t like this Hyundai trend of no rear wiper.
What's that rear wing for? If it is for style they missed it completely! Is it is for high speed cruising? Don't think so when top speed is 180-190 km/h, so what's the use? If actually is for stability at highway speeds of 180 km/h then something went wrong with the design. Getting that 0.21 drag coefficient to work properly is not only about shape but also about technology and to me that rear wing shows me that they failed to properly address stability at high speeds and had to come up with the rear wing, just like what Audi did on their first gen TT which were flying all over the place on high speeds and had to retrofit a rear wing. Rear legroom seems adequate but not rear headroom, boot space is weird , this is like a sedan with very small rear trunk opening that limits practicality and mind you we are talking about a car almost 5 meters long (well, 4.9 to be exact) . If you add the obstructed view of the two instrument panel screens by the steering wheel being in the middle of them, the questionable ride quality, the range which is not something to brag about with about 450-470 km for such a big car and the subpar interior material's quality which seems of a budget car, especially in the rear , I don't see what's all the fuss about this car. Its like any other EV, most probably an expensive one and not a better one.
Looks like an old school saab
Hyundai E-GMP platform: Ioniq 5, that's great. EV6, oh that's better. Genesis GV60, crikey, that's even better. Now here comes the Ioniq 6...
Is this a review or Just an influencer advertisement? I get the impression it is more an ad
Front end looks like something from the 80s… 😂😂
So you get a super long car (longer than model 3 ...longer than Sorento!), that doesn't have space in the back and boot. Why on earth would you go for that??
The only great thing about it is its range. Everything else is mind blowing wrong.
Aero. It’s the reason for both your complaint and your praise.
Well don't buy it
CLS was better resolved. ‘And we would like to thank Porsche and SAAB for their designs’.
Looks like a great car, well done Hyundai. Better range than a Tesla.
Ok it's not a Tesla but it still looks pretty good! The one thing I like about Hyundai is they are bold and try and be distinctive. Oh and 1-pedal driving should be standard in an EV. Why can't other manufacturers other than Tesla and Ford with the MachE put a decent size screen on the dash? At 45k it's a pretty good rival in its price range. However the review missed out the MOST important bit of information: how many are they going to make? No point tempting us with something sexy only to find we can't get it.
Phillip.
I would expect this to be in a different league to Tesla in terms of general build quality and development.
@@googleuser2571 I don't see why the build quality won't be as good as a Tesla. It won't reach the same safety rating but the ones I've seen have been very good inside and out. Certainly for a 45k EV.
Phillip.
Mans really closing a comment with his name like a corporate email over here 💀
Looks nice, but I still like the looks of my Dual motor Polestar better. (The battery tech seemingly being the only truly superior asset...) It was also quite funny when I just listened to the review without looking at the video about the driving dynamics. I swear it could've been a review of that car as well! The interior and dashboard does look more futuristic, I'll give you that. But I had electronic mirrors.
Such a unique looking car, like out of final fantasy game.
Can wait for the CUV version of this.
Wouldn't it be better, if such manufacturers, actually created a quality affordable city car, that many could afford, rather than larger cars that fewer could afford?
usually new technologies (here mainly battery technology) starts out in expensive showcase or study vehicles and then trickles down to more budget-oriented cars. happened with abs, cruise control, airbags, etc.
the other thing to consider that more expensive luxury vehicles have higher profit margins than smaller cars that costs less
I am sure alot of people are looking forward to stealing one for a test drive.
It actually looks like a Porsche “4-door 911” tbh
Horrible profile, IS bio design back?
Definetely not a review. Just a short test drive.
Hey, hey, hey. DON'T say that you "don't need to go faster"
You can never go fast enough 🏎 🚔🚔🚔
Of course you need to go faster!
When she’s got a Porsche donk, Mercedes waist, and a Honda face. Her personality must be multiple as well.
Nice car!!
I thought it was a Porsche 😂
10/10
Saab 900 2023. Keep on moving Hyundai!
I'm gonna stick my neck out here - I don't like the looks. It's a weird mash up between an old Citroen from the front, and Porsche 911 at the back. Odd, and it just doesn't look right. It will be expensive too - expect UK starting prices 'from' £50k. Hyundai have some chronic supply chain issues at the moment too, so even if you wanted to buy one (same as Ioniq 5), you probably won't be able to. Just consider this as well - with a moderate £5k deposit over 3 years @ 12k mpy, you're still looking at over £800pm on a PCP 'deal' for the 5 - just how does that make EV's more cost effective exactly? The absolute base model EV6 is around the same price pm too. Madness.
I need to go 0-60 in 3.2 Nice car, tho a bit funny-looking. Great review nevertheless.
No problem their is an N version coming with potentially over 500 BHP!
@@richardkennett4086 Whoa!
Trurtle spaceship
The front of this car just dont match the rest, at least for me. 😊
For me the front looks like a car from 12 years ago.
I hate the rear. Has a kind of porsche look that doesn't work in such a long car and the side mirrors as screens, no
And this should be a review?
Looks like a MERC CLS
Too bad once it arrives in the US they will remove the cameras for mirrors 🤦🏾♂️. Also let’s hope Hyundai doesn’t allow stupid dealerships that kill the enthusiasm for the Io5 and the EV6.
Resembles a Porsche at rear
382 good. 400+ better.
I'll wait.
It looks like an Infiniti J30
"If you aren't spending silly money on an EV"
Its £55k. I'd say that's silly money for a car, especially since the tax is £500 a year now and electricity costs more than petrol for a fill up at the moment.
I love the look and apparently it performs well but there's really no reason to buy this right now over any hot hatch since they all perform about the same, have about the same tax and same range on a tank of fuel.
Sucks for actually interesting cars to start being released, but like the EV6, there's not really a reason to buy them in the current climate over traditional vehicle or invest a little more and get something ridiculous like the Rivian that costs a bit more but comes with so much more utility and capability.
That rear won't age very well.
The headlights are very tame compared to the rear and pretty much the rest of the car. They ruin the face of it tbh.
aerodynamics 🙄
Agreed, the DRL signature is very meh.
Lighter colors change things
Yeah they should’ve carried the Porsche copy\ paste to the front as well
It looks like Darth Vader 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Doesn't sound biased at all to have one of the first reviews out there. Nope. Not at all.
