    Lance, probably the best advice you gave was “ the mouthpiece doesn’t make your sound great, it’s you, etc,etc,etc,”. GREAT ADVICE. Thank you.

    Have a Meyer alto from 1978 that I picked out at a store. 6 small chamber, but have been playing mostly tenor on an 8, so going back and forth made the alto feel like a pea shooter. Got a HR* 7 and am really liking it. I like the sizzle and compared to the small chamber Meyer the HR* has more body. Now this Custom Dark sounds good, especially when you are playing it. I may have to give one a try. Love your relaxed "Parker" playing. You make the piece and horn sound really good.🎷

      Thanks much, Alan! Yeah, Jody knows what he's doing. They are all good. Just depends on what you're looking for and what is comfortable to play. I haven't played the Custom Dark in many real playing situations yet (pandemic times) so, not sure how it will project in front of a band. But it's a beautiful full sound. My main horn is tenor. I also play the NY DV. Good luck Alan.

    Do you think this is a good piece to facilitate a Johnny Hodges sort of lead alto sound?

    • @lancebryant8528
      @lancebryant8528  2 года назад +1

      Well, it might get you closer to that sort of sound than some of the other modern mouthpieces. Possibly. But there are so many factors that go into someone's sound. The instrument, the mouthpiece, the player. And as i understand it, mouthpieces today are made to be louder and brighter than they were back in the thirties. Because I think everything is louder and brighter today. Anyway, I'm not so sure if it makes sense to try to get a sound like someone that many decades ago. I might as well go ahead and admit i don't really know the answer to your question. 😆 But those are some things I think about. 😏

    • @Ambaryerno
      @Ambaryerno 2 года назад +1

      @@lancebryant8528 Oh sure, so much is dependent on the player and other factors. OTOH, some pieces would certainly be a better starting point than others (IE I wouldn't try to get that sound with a high-baffle Dukoff).

      @@timobesamusca9332 yep it did for me - twice! Got the alto piece as well yesterday. Got them both in the 6, although the 7 is great too- a bit more power and spread, but for me the 6 has plenty of power and a touch more intimacy which I prefer. Paired them both on alto and tenor with 2.75 American cut Legere reeds, which for me provides the right balance between having some resistance to work with/tonal weight and flexibility/ease of playing.

    • @lancebryant8528
      @lancebryant8528  3 года назад +2

      Hi Mario, thanks for the question. I'm really not one to try a lot of different mouthpieces. At some point found that JodyJazz made really good mouthpieces so I try out the pieces they make that i think may be what I'm looking for. Check out the Better Sax channel. He does a great job reviewing equipment. Good luck Mario!

    • @lukeserrano62
      @lukeserrano62 3 года назад +1

      Having recently trialled all three and bought the Custom Dark, I can say this: Select Jazz very similar to the Jody Jazz HR, just a touch more graininess in it that makes it more a straight ahead jazz piece, whereas the HR is more versatile for use also in contemporary music, with that high frequency buzz you can hear in this video. The Select Jazz is a very good piece; plays really freely, altissimo pops right out. It does have character, but it can’t compete for soulfulness and swagger with the JJ Custom Dark. The HR is definitely a piece you need to play whilst wearing ear plugs, whilst the custom dark rolls off these highs beautifully- no need for ear plugs even when pushing it hard and high.

      @@mario_jesusfollower2953 yep it’s a winner. I’d say it’s especially great for big band playing, but also solo playing, especially in the mid and upper range which sings really nicely. I’m big into the low range, so I wanted a piece with more body in the sound, almost like making an alto sound like a tenor (or tenor like a bari), hence why I went Custom Dark. But yep SJ is great. I loved trialing it.

    • @lancebryant8528
      @lancebryant8528  3 года назад

      Hey Bryan, yeah I know that can happen with some mouthpieces with a short shank. Hard to get in tune. I don't have that problem with the Custom Dark pieces. I think Jody compensated with the precise measurements. I don't know, but these play well. Sometimes it takes a while to get used to finding the spot on the neck cork for a new mouthpiece. Because you can still see where the old mouthpiece used to sit.
