I wanted to give you an update on my ongoing animation project, LOR. I first began working on the project in the year 2000 and put it on hiatus in 2004, but it has remained a lifelong pursuit for me. Over the years, I have continued to work on bits and pieces of the project in my spare time.
In August 2021, I started the lengthy process of re-rendering the movie using 3dsmax and Ray. This has involved creating new scenic models, lighting, and materials, but the animation and editing timing have remained largely unchanged. In order to make the process take even longer, I decided to render the movie in stereo for display in VR visors, which requires rendering each frame twice, once for each eye. As of now, I have completed about 6 minutes of the 14-minute movie, with the remaining 8 minutes still to be done. At the 6-minute mark of the movie file, we switch back to the original renderings from 2004.
I am currently exploring newer rendering technologies that can help speed up the process, as I only have two older rendering machines to work with and a limited budget of around $100.00. Many people may be familiar with the original version of the movie that I made 20 years ago and distributed on DVD with video tutorials. You can still find that version on my RUclips page for comparison.
If you are interested in seeing the stereo version of the movie, please let me know. Please note that you will need a VR visor to view it. I used the Oculus 2 for viewing the movie. The file is quite large, so here it is on Dropbox at 5.58GB. Download and then transfer it to your visor.

I love creative ,imaginative compositions...this is stunning
I still have the LOR DVD I bought about 20 years ago. LOR got me interested in 3D modeling and animation. What impresses me the most is Andy's creativity. From the Mongolian throat singing to the different robots, robotic insects, and the crazy hummingbirds, it is just amazing! The amount of work that went into this for just one person, WOW! It was neat to see Andy go on to bigger things but yeah, I wondered if LOR was still kicking around in the back of his mind and one day he might start tinkering with it again.

This shortfilm is one that inspired me to become an animator, I see it again and I still marvel at the camera work, fx, models, character design and overall look and the fresh creative and quite unique ideas, thank you for refreshing that inspiration from 20+ years ago, you rock man, keep at it, I've always wanted to see what would happen to the baby!!! Just a cliff hanger!

Great images, but what is the premise to it all,? Just a a video with no story line? I personaly just don't get story line. Well below my logic, bê it good or bad.

Wow, Andy, I think I was one of the early viewers back in the day. Today I saw a new thing coming up from Festo (they are making a drone bee, quite large, but really nice!) and it instantly reminded me of your work. It's so great to see that you continued with your story and your awesome 3D modeling work.

I was blown away about how imaginative it was. I did notice there was a robotic praying mantis on a stem . I was watching to see if there would be predators in a world like this.

So the whole "To be Continued" is probably not going to happen anytime soon? That's a shame, I truly enjoyed your film. I do hope you find the time and the resources to carry on.
The production of these new renders was exhausting to be honest. I sat in front of my computers screen for a year an half solid, every day. I enjoy the process immensely but I started getting the feeling that this kind of production is quickly becoming old school. Going forward I'm looking into new technologies to help get things done faster, real time and AI to be specific. Also, I'm taking some time to be totally analog and do some oil painting.

I've been researching technologies this past year in preparation in making my first film myself. Ive experimented with Vray, Arnold and Renderman mostly. As well as Phoenix. I think it really comes down to Vray and Arnold and it depends what your setup is like. Arnold is very fast for CPU and Vray is very fast for GPU and with good de-noising options you can really turn down the samples to speed things up. If you have a good GPU then i think your current setup of Vray/Phoenix is a good choice. I myself decided to focus on cpu since i am simulating a lot and all sims are CPU only except for Embergen and I like the natural look of Arnold. But I admit, staying in vray would make life easier.

I remember it of course, very nice work, and this new one were great, really good! I miss the 3ds max animation script you released before, they were great, but I don´t think they work with 3ds max 2023-2024 or?

@@stefantornqvist2498 I still use Automatron, but it needs help being maintained. I have it hard coded to my system so it's way too much work to release to outsiders.

I've been waiting for more LOR for years. This looks beautiful. It's almost surreal seeing some of this in 4K for the first time. I’ve long been an admirer of your work.
There are definitely a few areas here that are rough around the edges. Flaws in things you haven’t yet revised become more noticeable with the incredible jump in video quality and resolution over the original LOR. This is especially noticeable in some of the camera movements which are sometimes a bit jerky, or oddly timed. I'm hesitant to get too nitpicky here as I'm sure you're already aware of all of this.
There is one thing you added which irks me a bit: the visual cue within the pelican’s mouth as it sings. I realize you may have put it there to make it more apparent the notes are being sung separately from the background music, but it looks cartoonish, and a bit too obvious. I think a visible high frequency vibration of the pelican’s mouth pieces (along with some adjustments to the scene's cinematography) might be enough enough to cue the viewer.
Please don't take this as negative criticism! I understand the huge amount of time and effort that went into recreating and rendering everything, and fixing some of this stuff would require you to re-render those scenes... Please, keep working on LOR - keep doing what you're doing. The artistic direction you take in your work is so beautiful, and so unusual. For the longest time, I've been hoping to see more of the world you created, and more of the story. I hope you will find time to give that to us once you finish re-rendering this!
