Also, I would like to say that the rogue/wizard combo is actually quite famous in the fantasy genre.
So, you know how there's this fantasy trope where a big burly fighter and a small, sneaky thief team up as a gritty mercenary duo? That trope was started by Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, a famous duo written by Fritz Leiber. They appeared first in 1939 in response to the author thinking that Tarzan and Conan weren't as true to human nature.
In particular, the Gray Mouser is described as a thief and former wizard's apprentice. He's literally a rogue/ wizard, and you just continued a long tradition of making references to a famous duo.

I actually think the Rogue/Wizard combo is SUPER interesting?? Maybe not well-optimised as you say, but I find the idea of a young wizard forced out of the education system by insane tuition fees to be SUCH a strong starting point. Maybe they ended up being evicted because they couldn't afford their rent anymore, and after a few weeks of living on the streets, eating garbage and unable to wash and study properly, the college just... kicks them out.
So now you have this literal rogue wizard, partially trained, facing a choice. Do they spend time trying to raise money to get back in and pursue their lifelong dream of wizardry? Do they fall into a life of crime, using their magical talents to survive? Do they decide to tear down the college in an act of righteous fury at the elitist nature of the education system???????
    Ooooooooooooooh what a great video

I agree. I actually really like the concept of an Arcane Trickster Rogue/Wizard multiclass, either being a Wizard who dropped out of wizarding school and basically continued to learn on their own, stealing scrolls and books, or the reverse, someone who picked up magic on the streets by acquiring spell books and the like, but then somehow earned a spot at some Wizard academy and could now learn magic professionally.

I love the Rogue/Wizard! Optimization be damned, it’s just a great concept! Like, what if due to being unable to afford tuition, they start developing Rogue skills to sneak into the academy at night, to “borrow” books from the school library, to steal scrolls that have great new spells on them? What if they master disguise skills, and sneak attack various students to knock them out and take their place in class?

  • @CratthewF
    @CratthewF 7 месяцев назад +246

17:00 Optimizer here, rogue wizard can totally work as a multiclass! A big problem rogues tend to have is that they don’t deliver enough damage even with their sneak attacks due to never getting extra attack. so a level or two in wizard to pick up booming blade can help with that, and as cantrips scale with character level and not class level, that’ll scale well throughout the game.
not to mention that a couple wizard levels also give super useful reactions (shield, absorb elements, silvery barbs) as well as access to find familiar.
Now, obviously most of this could be achieved just by playing an arcane trickster and ditching the wizard levels, but wizard gives more spell slots sooner, and more versatility. plus, it allows you to have a different rogue subclass as well as a wizard subclass, which ends up giving you more.
Not the b e s t class combination by any means, but perfectly viable in optimized play!

Bladesinger/psi-knife or swashbuckler work well enough. (Swashbuckler makes me also want to dip swords bard tho😅) "But sir I don't have any weapons on me" after having used shadow blade and dual wielding psi-knives. (You might run into a lack of arms tho, haste or a dip into echo knight or gloomstalker might be necessary.) Some decent races choices could be thri-kreen, bugbear, harengon or 1 of Fizbans dragonborn. (Chromatic could have a weird nieche here with their once per long rest 1 minute immunnity hiding inside a wall of fire or a cloud kill. If so be sure to pick up the blind fighting style)

(Because it amused me, I'm actually going to give it a try.)
First one - Soldier background, Making him a Battlemaster from the Roman Legions. Variant Human to start with the Martial Adept feat for more Battlemaster Maneuvers. Shortsword, Javelins, Shield.
Second one... Noble background, so I'm making that one a Samurai. Going full dual-wielder. One of a dozen samurai currently adventuring to alleviate the burden on his feudal Lord who cannot afford to pay all of his retainers, but would be disgraced by actually having to admit that. They're all out there joining adventuring parties, not out of pursuit of wealth or power for themselves, but for the Lord they have sworn to protect and take care of.
Third one... I liked the last one, I'm going to use the Giant Foundling background and the Strike of Giants feat on a Rune Knight, to go for a blend of Tomoe Gozen and Minamoto no Yoshitsune to get a "trained by Fire Giant style Oni instead of Tengu" flavor. She's got the swords, but they're not her specialty fighting style. That's her Kanabo maul that only comes out when things are really serious. She's one of a pair of twins, her sister went down the Path of the Giant barbarian, and Tomoe is adventuring to pay her way as she tries to catch up with her sister and talk her down from potentially going Kaiju movie revenge rampage on whoever was responsible for the two of them being left to the giants as small children in the first place.
Fourth up, Pirate background? Okay, going with Champion Fighter, Variant Human so he can still get a couple Maneuvers, because I'm going to make the Dread Pirate Roberts so formidable the few times he has to fight, that very few people are going to dare chance it. I'm literally ripping off The Princess Bride, and I don't care.
Fifth, Cloistered Scholar background. Eldritch Knight. She's the spare heir who got bundled off to a nunnery to keep her out of trouble at an early age. While studying there, she encountered an old philosophical treatise that encouraged honing both mind and body, and started putting herself through a rigorous training regimen. During an unauthorized trip outside the walls, the cloisters were attacked and destroyed by an enemy that believed the libraries there contained a treatise on powerful magics or artifacts. Predictably, she has it with her. She's adventuring in hopes she and her new party will be able try to rescue the survivors.
Sixth - Psi Warrior. Urchin. Variant Human, Eldritch Adept (Armor of Shadows creates a psychic barrier to protect them if ever unarmored)
They lived in a ramshackle shelter in the slums with their family. Eventually their innate powers awakened, and they decided that since they're already used to the kind of conditions that most people would consider the hardships of adventuring life, they ought to become an adventurer so they can not only improve their own lot in life, but pull the rest of Midden Court out of the dust and grime along with them.

Rogue wizard multiclass can actually be solid, especially if you go for Arcane trickster so you already have higher INT and at level 9 you can get Magical ambush (DIS on saving throws for anybody you are hidden from) which is cool for wizard as well. From the wizard side, e.q. Shadowblade conjures a finesse melee weapon that you are proficient with so you very much can sneak attack with Shadowblade

Also, Shadowblade gives ADV on attacks in dim light or darkness which gives extra opportunities for sneak attack. And it is light weapon so you can use bonus action for off hand attack with another light weapon

You decide the creature’s appearance, but it is equipped with a saddle, bit, and bridle" with speed 100 ft. Hello I'm a minmaxer, and adding a level of wizard to your arcane trickster to expand your spell list is actually quite good!
edit: for any interested nerds, you take sentinel on your arcane trickster, figure out a way to give yourself consistent advantage such as reckless attack or faerie fire, and cast mirror image on yourself. If something attacks you and hits a mirror image instead, you proc a second sneak attack per round using your opportunity attack. Two sneak attacks per round helps rogue keep up with the damage spikes that come around level 5-8

When rolling two identical dice that need to be separated, my suggestion is to decide not based on which die is which, but based on where they land. So like, before you roll, decide "the one that lands further to the left will be good/evil, and the one on the right will be law/chaos", or something like that.

You can get super high AC with Bladesong and Shield, a familiar for more reliable sneak attack, Booming Blade and Green Flame Blade to spice up your attacks, lots of utility spells for outside-of-combat, it actually sounds pretty fun to play! Plus the fly speed and a bit of emergency healing from the Aasimar, I think the dice were cooking!

17:00 Not actually the worst multiclass! A rouge would love Chronorgy or divination wizard, or if you dump con a little (Bad move, but bear with me) You could be a Swashbuckler War magic, get a bonus to initative equal to charisma and intelligence, plus Gift of Altricity as a wizard to get 1d8 to your intiative for 8 hours. Arcane deflection helps you against status DC saves, but likely save your reaction for uncanny dodge. Green Flame blade gives you a good reliable damage boost once. Shield is a good emergency buffer, and Silvery barbs gives you advantage in a pinch. Find Familiar can also help you, if you want the cheesy route of you Spider familiar hiding in your bag of holding using the help action. Could be viable! I may even try this build, though I'm not sure if it would trump just a flat rouge or flat wizard. Better as a Harengon for even more intiative, but hey, form of dread is nice for a rouge.

This was an extremely fun and instructive video to watch. If I had to choose, I did like the last one best. Everything about it just grabbed my attention. it'd be super awesome if you could figure out how to incorporate the hood with the halo, but also get that just simply might not be feasible. But I did love love the idea of s spell scroll hanging off the belt, ready for action! :)

These are awesome. Also mentioning that the eyes are the focal point is actually pretty interesting because as a mostly blind person what I do look at digital photos on the first things I try to find is the eyes and that helps me find the rest of the orientation of the person in the photo and then my brain can try to focus on it and usually this helps me figure out what a photo is depending on the clarity and colors and set photo.

I honestly love that inner conflict-someone who has trauma and is actively dealing with the consequences of it, but is still determined to be the best person they can be.
I get the feeling that, at some point in the mid-to-late-game, she’d sacrifice herself in an attempt to break her pact, and the party would immediately venture into the Hells to save her.
Also, for some unknown reason, I feel like her name would be Lorelei. I know that’s not an elf name per se, but it feels right.

Mechanically, a rogue with a wizard dip can be pretty potent. An arcane trickster gets a big boost from a couple levels of full caster, and with wzards being an Int caster who gets their subclass at level 2 it's a natural fit. I would probably go illusionist, but Abjuration, Divination, and even War Magic all give great stuff for a rogue for only 2 levels of wizard.

I think the Harengon Druid could be really interesting, especially as a villian to the rest of your cast. It would be really fun to start to see a campaign unfold through adrolls or rp videos! Like, Na'krasha and Ellowin are must haves in this party, but Nix the Changling Merchant, Francis Summerpike the Gnome Mapmaker (Maybe an artificer?), Cleo the Tiefling bard, and Mariska the Sea Elf Warlock could all be really interesting choices! You could also tie in new NPCs that you make into the campaign as NPC villians, shop keepers, etc. This Druid, who I think should be called Ivy Rose, could be great first villian for them, maybe with the goal of returning the PCs hometown to the wild? Anyways, Ivy Rose, because it sounds cute and safe, but Ivy can be poisonous, and Roses have thorns! She literally tears her suitors apart from the inside out. Great video!

One of my favorite things to do on HeroForge is to use their randomizer option on both species/race (which plays with hairstyles, sizes, and other bodily factors quite freely!) and outfits, and see what comes up, and then build a character from that for NPCs. It has generated a number of memorable and interesting combinations, and then refining them slightly (e.g. making them symmetrical instead of mismatched gloves and shoes, etc....unless it's a better look for them not to be!) usually finishes them off, and the stories around each character generate themselves!
