Honestly Vendrick is pretty underappreciated. Sure the fight is kind of boring and mechanically easy, but they dedicated like five seperate sections to him. The game builds him up all game long and when the king is revealed, it's heartbreaking and disappointing. I really like how they made his healthbar and damage so huge to indicate that he was and still is stronger than Gwyn, a god. The Ruler's Sword absorbs souls, making it more powerful. Is it any wonder that he hits so hard? His lack of a moveset is perfect for allowing the player to analyze what he was like before he went hollow. Perfect lore boss.
And although the runback is guarded by royal guards and Veldstadt, preventing getting to the boss fog quickly, it makes perfect thematic sense to do that there. They even make fighting him optional because your character doesn't even want to kill him. It perfectly fits Dark Souls 2's themes about ruling a kingdom and disappointment. Ivory King is another boss completely built around lore, which is fine because the previous dlcs were bosses that were made for "fun" fights, which include Gank Squad in a coop fight. The third dlc though was entirely based around making an entire story.
I would also like to point out that Dragonslayer Armor in Ds3 and Sanctuary Guardian are pretty underrated.

  • @QuackEternal

I personally think gwyn is a strange pick here. I always loved how he was just as fast, if not juuuust faster than the player. I like thinking of it as his body still retaining the muscle memory of being a powerful god, capable of incredible feats in combat, but his mind has been shattered for who knows how long, and that's why his movement is so sporadic. The fight also shows how much the player has learned over the adventure mechanically-wise. If you didn't learn as much as you should have, he's an absolute nightmare. However, if you took the time to master the mechanics and realize you can parry him, he's a pushover. The coolest thing about that is both types of players deserve the victory in the end, whether it's because you finally pushed through after so many attempts or because you proved you were unstoppable

Underrated in DS1: definitely Capra Demon. Everyone seems to hate it, but I really like it. When I first played Dark Souls I felt like in a horror game and this boss perfectly encapsulates it. Claustrophobic, kills you if you are ill equiped (honestly, just get a bit of poise and the dogs are no problem. Maybe running around naked is not the right move...) and with a cool goat design. It reminded me of Silent Hill 2 and the first pyramid head fight. A slow humanoid enemy with a big weapon, where the tight space is the biggest problem. And there are enough ways to overcome it: you can cheese it with the bomb strat, get a high poise shield (like the knight shield), run for the stairs and let the dogs fall down. You can even use a plunging attack, the most reliable attack in the game ;)
My preferred way of playing the game fits perfectly with the fight: I like to directly go for the ember in the depths, so I avoid any boss and use the skip to undead town, fight capra demon as my first boss and then quickly upgrade my weapon with the ember.

I don't think Gwyn is overrated. There is a consensus in the community that what sustains this boss is the music and the lore, because the fight itself is a joke. And really, if you play focusing on the lore and understanding a lot of it through the game, this boss is quite impactful. I just think that with some adjustments in the fight he could be better. If they made him miss some attacks, or even have some dialogue it would be really cool. Imagine you go towards the flame in the middle of the fight and Gwyn throws himself in front of it, even though he could be attacked.

Besides music though no boss matches Kos in terms of raw atmosphere with the buildup of the fishing hamlet, the giant korpse of a an old one, the amazing starting cutscene. DeS: Agree with your picks (don’t have strong opinions on this game’s bosses in general)
    DS1: Agree with your picks
    DS2:
Underrated: Duke’s Dear Freja, I just think the concept of fighting a big spider is cool and it’s a pretty fun fight overall
Overrated: Burnt Ivory King, the first phase is kind of a waste of time and his moveset is pretty simple. Outside of that, the charred loyce knights all target you (and they have way too much damn poise) and sometimes your last knight won’t close the last portal even after BIK spawns
    BB:
Underrated: Living Failures, it’s not even a bad boss, it’s Celestial Emissary if it was an actually engaging fight
Overrated: Father Gascoigne, he’s a good boss, but unlike what a lot of people say you can definitely fight him like a Dark Souls boss and still win easily. His second phase tends to last like 10 seconds to boot
    DS3:
Underrated: Old Demon King, sometimes you just gotta appreciate moderate difficulty fight that isn’t a gimmick of sorts
Overrated: Abyss Watchers, love this fight but compared to the greats of this game they’re just… not as spectacular, I suppose
    Sekiro:
Underrated: Guardian Ape Duo, it reinforces what you learned from the previous encounter while also teaching you to space and juggle your opponents, it makes for a frantic and fun fight imo
Overrated: Demon of Hatred, he’s more polarising than popular but like you said he’s just in the wrong game. If anything, he’s a misplaced Nioh boss. The hack-slash/evade playstyle doesn’t feel right for Sekiro and never will
    ER:
Underrated: Ancestor Spirit, it’s a chill and atmospheric fight that surprisingly isn’t a gimmick. Not the Regal version though, that fight has a super BS life steal move that can make the fight drag

    My OVERRATED/UNDERRATED list:
DEMONS SOULS: PENETRATOR / OLD HERO: Penetrator looks very cool but his moveset is a bit too basic for me to put him in the top 3 of demons souls bosses like a lot of people do, old hero looks incredibly cool and intimidating and i love the gimmick of him being blind. The runback to him does him dirty in most peoples rankings.
DS1: KALAMEET / SANCTUARY GUARDIAN: Kalameet has the classic problem with big enemies where his whole body is a hitbox during all of his attacks and his hitboxes are very weird, also his charge attack is way too fast to avoid with a midroll, you are pretty much forced to fastroll Also i dont get why hes resistant to lightning despite being a dragon. I found him the least enjoyable out of the DLC bosses and always see him very high on the rankings. Sanctuary guardian on the other hand is a fast paced, dynamic glass cannon fight that is often overlooked because its at the start of the dlc. It felt like a mixup in a good way.
DS2: SINH / RUIN SENTINELS: Sinh looks incredible, but the actual fight is nothing but tedious. Very high variance on whether he just does stomp and swipe attacks on the ground giving you an easy kill or stays in mid-air forever, also uses weapon durability damage and toxic status which are not very fun aspects imo. Ruin sentinels were my first real bossfight where i had a learning curve in ds2 and it felt like the most well-designed out of the ds2 ganks. Genuinely a fun fight, although with an awful runback.
DS3: GRAVETENDER / OLD DEMON KING: there arent really any overrated ds3 bosses, but gravetender is underhated. This is the worst boss in the game and its not even close, the gravetender and the wolf are clearly not designed for 2v1, you have to kill the gravetender before the wolf shows up and in a game with almost no bad bosses, that makes them the worst. The old demon king is often overlooked but i feel like its a mechanically good boss and the scene where his demonic flame explodes at the end is quite tragic, the story of the end of a race is told quite well.
SEKIRO: GENICHIRO / LADY BUTTERFLY: There arent any overrated Sekiro bosses either, so ill just put genichiro because i beat him on my first attempt which felt anti-climatic after so many people told me how hard he was. I did Lady butterfly before genichiro and she killed me over and over for hours and taught me the mechanics of the game, for being such a good teacher she gets the underrated title from me.
ELDEN RING: ASTEL / FORTISSAX: Astel is the weakest remembrance boss in my opinion. Waves of darkness is a bullshit attack that i still havent figured out how to dodge apart from running away and in general the gameplay doesnt live up to his looks. Fortissax on the other hand has not only the best OST, but one of the most interesting gimmicks with the static lightning keeping you constantly on the move, i think he is underrated because most people encounter him too late and kill him very quickly without having to even engage in the unique mechanics. My rune level 1 run gave me a new appreciation for him.

I do not get for the life of me why people think Orphan's ost is underwhelming. I don't see how at all. First phase is a very sad cello paired with a solo singer, which yes isn't much, but it sets the tone for the fight really well and disregarding lore, it just sounds super climactic and beautiful as hell. Second phase switches to rage and it is exciting as hell. Not only does the melody sound very good... I mean, I just don't see why this theme isn't considered as one of the greats, like the other dlc themes. In my opinion, I think it's way better than Lady Marias

Having played more than half-way through souls 1 for the first time, i think quelaag isn't loved enough. Her boss fight is beloved but i never thought she'd be the only boss i had a real blast facing through the early-game before Ornstein and Smough. (I actually felt similarly about blighttown also. The area is seriously nowhere near as bad as i was told. Sens fortress pissed me off way more.) She's currently my third favorite boss followed by sanctuary guardian and finally Ornstein & Smough. (I haven't fought any of the great lords yet or any of the other dlc bosses).
I guess if there is any other strong but not so popular opinion, its that capra demon is contender for the worst boss in the game so far. Its crazy to me how i came to the bossfight overleveled and it still was the antithesis of fun. Following on your frankly brave comments about Nito... I think Capra demon IS a dark souls 2 boss in dark souls 1. He represents the worst elements of that game here. He doesn't even teach you anything other bosses before him didn't already.
Edit: Beat the game. Queelag is still more fun than all the other great lords and capra demon is definitely the second worst boss next to BoC

A lot of the distaste toward Blighttown in the Souls community was caused by the dreadful performance issues in the area in the original PS3 release. It's actually one of my favorite areas to play in Remastered (if my profile picture didn't give that away), in part because you don't have to go there every playthrough so it's one of the few areas where I still don't have every enemy and item memorized. The only thing I don't like is how it's possible you'll end up going to Blighttown before grabbing any Blooming Purple Moss if you didn't happen to find Darkroot Forest early in your playthrough.

DoH doesn't doesn't work because it contraddicts everything the game taught you. It's an endurance fight in a game where you have to break your enemy's posture and be perfect with your parries.
Guardian Ape also fits your description but it works. You can efficiently parry all of his attacks or just damage him until it dies, it gives you more options to move around the arena, is more dynamic, and has an actually original second phase.

Just like if I say “that movie is overrated”, it means I don’t like it in relation to the general consensus. That’s what it’s always meant. In fact, I think it makes for a good discussion when everyone is raving about a new movie and you didn’t like it, so you say “wait…hold up guys, don’t you think that maybe it wasn’t really THAT good?”. It’s fun. The amount of people that get mad over the words overrated and underrated…I don’t get it. I don't think hes hated, but the Old Hero is easily my favorite fight from Demons Souls, the way he's played out as almost a stealth fight, walking behind him, getting a swing or two before frantically running away, trying to make enough distance between you two so he stops hearing you. His movement is great as well, from pinpoint strikes on your exact location, to the wild swings he makes when he's lost you, to just full desperation round swings. Yes of course the Thief Ring can neuter him harder than any boss in the game, but if you don't, he's an incredibly rewarding and intricate fight that you actually have to think about your movements with. Would absolutely adore to see them do another blind boss fight especially since they have been having more focus on "expanded stealth" mechanics.
As for boss i dislike, Rykard, a lot of people praise him as the best gimmick fight, and I gotta say, Yhorm did it better. Rykard becomes a damn cluster fuck by the second phase where its impossible to see some threats because they're all this deep red hugh, there's absolutely no room to stop moving lest that tracking skeleton nonsense fucks you up. Saying all this I don't hate the fight, I like that the swordspears entire moveset is viable in this fight instead of just the heavy or a charged attack, and I like his design and theme, just the fight itself that becomes far too hectic for me.

There's a lot of variability to when Fume Knight enters phase 2, which can cause very different experiences with him first try. A lot of the fight's difficulty comes from how many different moves the player has to learn between his two phases, at least relative to other DS2 bosses which have simpler movesets than in later games. If he enters phase 2 very early or very late, then the player doesn't have to deal with learning two entirely different movesets. On my first playthrough of the DLC, I struggled with him the first couple tries, but then I got a fight where he just never entered phase 2 until he was at like 10% health and I beat him. (Not assuming that this is what happened on your playthrough, but just something I've noticed.)

If we're talking solely from a fight perspective I'll have to say my beloved Artorias is probably overrated. I love the guy's look and lore, but at the end of the day his moveset is kinda basic. Blasphemy, I know, but slap his moveset on a faceless dummy and you realize there was a lot more potential for abyssy moves.
Most underrated in my opinion is the shura ending Isshin fight. Personally he's my third most wiped sekiro boss (1st place basic owl who actually made be put down sekiro for 3 years after I already had the shura ending, 2nd lady butterfly). He just gets overshadowed by his sword saint self, but in my most humble of opinions he can stand on his own merit. He's fun but tricky, with environmental hazards and delayed attacks, but oh so satisfying to beat.

    Bosses I think are underrated
    The Four Kings (DS1)
    Mirror knight (DS2)
    Martyr Logarius (Bloodborne)
    Dragonslayer Armor (DS3)
    Emma/Isshin Ashina (Sekiro, Shura ending)
    Morgott (Elden Ring)
    Now for my Overrated bosses
    Flame Lurker (Demon’s Souls)
    Manus (DS1)
    Ebrietes (Bloodborne)
Dancer Of The Boreal Valley (DS3)
    Maliketh (Elden Ring)
This is my list. I will say that even though I said overrated doesn’t mean I don’t like them. I just think they get way too much credit.

Most underrated for me is Vordt since his theme overshadows him so hard. He's the second boss of the game yet the music he goes with has spawned it own meme

In my opinion (Mind you, i can think a boss is overrated and still like it more than an "underrated" boss)
    Demon's Souls
    Underrated: Maneaters
Overrated: Flamelurker (I like it more than the Maneaters but I think Tower Knight and Old King Allant are way better bosses)
    Dark Souls
    Underrated: Chaos Witch Quelaag
    Overrated: Gwyn, Lord of Cinder
    Dark Souls 2
    Underrated: Executioner's Chariot
    Overrated: Burnt Ivory King
    Bloodborne
    Underrated: Cleric Beast
Overrated: Orphan of Kos (Fantastic boss, but no way is it better than Ludwig and Lady Maria)
    Dark Souls 3
Underrated: Dancer of the Boreal Valley
    Overrated: Demon Prince
    Sekiro
    Underrated: Isshin Ashina (Shura ending)
    Overrated: Guardian Ape
    Elden Ring
Underrated: Malenia, Blade of Miquella (I don't know if the term underrated is correct here, but she's easily the most polarizing boss in the series and a lot of players hate her but I actually think that, while flawed, she's an incredible fight and potentially one of the best in the series), otherwise i'd choose Godrick as well
    Overrated: Starscourge Radahn

I agree wholeheartedly. Orphan was a joke for me, parrying is just OP against humanoids

For Dark Souls 3, it’s easy for me. Underrated: Oceiros. I just love how he talks during battle, and his theme is pleasant. Overrated: Twin Princes. They… are easy. A fun fight, but overrated in difficulty

“You can make this fight a joke by parrying but I don’t think I should mark him down for that” - during the champion Gundyr
Then proceeds to mark Gwynn down because of parrying

Dragonslayer Armor is a very high quality boss fight that gets overshadowed just because DS3's has an incredible roster of bosses. Had he been in Dark Souls 1 or 2 he would be considered one of the best in the game.
Conversely, I think had the Lost Sinner been included in Dark Souls 3 with smoother mechanics, she would have been much, much more appreciated.

    Well, for me:
Demon's Souls: Underrated is Fool's Idol. Overrated is Maneaters.
Dark Souls 1: Underrated is the same, honourable mention to the Sanctuary Guardian though. Overrated is also the same.
Dark Souls 2: Underrated is the Duke's Dear Freja. Overrated is the Giant Lord ( alot of people rate him as the best boss in the main game ).
Bloodborne: Underrated is either Laurence or the Moon Presence. Overrated is tricky as all the beloved bosses deserve it. Maybe Ebrietas, idk.
Dark Souls 3: Underrated is Yhorm the Giant. Overrated is also tricky, probably Aldrich though.
Sekiro: Underrated is Great Shinobi Owl as he is often overshadowed by Father Owl. Overrated is Shura Isshin.
Elden Ring: Underrated is Godrick or Gideon. Overrated is Margit.

Cool list. This would be my list:
    DeS:
Overrated: False king Allant. Would be a great boss, but the runback and soul suck attack makes it a chore to get through for me.
Underrated: Old hero. He’s just really cool.
    DS:
Overrated: Kalameet. A whatever boss to me.
Underrated: Sanctuary guardian. Looks cool and is fun to fight.
    Havent finished DS2
    BB:
Overrated: Orphan of Kos/Bloodstarved beast. Orphan has mediocre music and screams too much. Still a decent boss tho. I don’t think bloodstarved beast is a very liked boss, but I really hate him.
Underrated: Vicar Amelia. Looks cool, decent challenge. Better Cleric beast.
    DS3:
Overrated: Pontif Sulyvan. Hard to read attacks, one of then unreactable. Relentless aggression and very hard.
Underrated: Dragonslayer armour. Great ost, unique, cool arena.
    Sekiro:
Overrated: Demon of Hatred. Just not anything special. Too long fight.
Underrated: Great Shinobi Owl. Overshadowed by Father Owl.
    Elden Ring:
Overrated: Radagon. Boring look (sorry). You go through the entire game kinda expecting Marika to be the final boss, only to fight Radagon, who you might not even know who is. Ost is a worse version of the main theme. Boring arena.
Underrated: OG tree sentinal. Looks cool, fun to fight, good music, pretty balanced for all playstyles.

Flame Lurker is basically the only monster fight like it in Demon's Souls and the style was so loved that it became the template for a lot of future fights. Many souls bosses after Demon's Souls are basically remakes of this fight, but with new twists, so you are encountering the Seinfield is Unfunny trope with this one.
Also to be fair, King Alan is also mentioned a lot for best boss and was also hugely inspirational, but people probably pick him less because his ability to steal your levels is miserable.

Most underrated Elden Ring boss is the Regal Ancestor hands-down. I think it gets slept on so much because the boss is obscure and out of the way - completely optional, and the boss is relatively easy with the rather small health bar and it is very easy to be overgeared and overleveled by the time you even reach it. But this boss is amazing. For anyone reading this, next time you go to Nokron and fight the Regal Ancestor, toy with it a bit... don't nuke it down and watch it's mechanics, listen to the score they made for the fight, take it all in. I wish the boss was much harder so it could be more memorable.

    Over / Under:
DeS: Allant (too basic moveset for final boss) / Astraea (insane theme / concept)
DS: Gwyn (same reason as you) / Nito (atmosphere is actually insane)
DS2: Fume (bullshit hitboxes) / Demon of Song (the design is marvelous)
DS3: Soul of Cinder (boring design) / Demon King (one of the best demon fights)
BB: Gazza (too easy) / Living Failures (thes summon a damn meteor storm!!)
ER: All Dragons (would have great looking moves if i‘d see more than their feet) / Godrick for Cutscene and OST
Sekiro: Genichiro (just a parry fest) / Divine Dragon (Best set piece fight so far)
