  • An artwork's color or composition can pull you in -- and put you on the path to having important and difficult conversations, says artist Titus Kaphar. In this stunning talk, he reflects on his artistic evolution and takes us on a tour of his career -- from "The Jerome Project," which draws on religious icons to examine the US criminal justice system, to "From a Tropical Space," a haunting body of work that centers around Black mothers whose children have disappeared. Kaphar also shares the idea behind NXTHVN, an arts incubator and community for young people in his hometown.

I find it beautiful when I watch a person pour their soul and time in doing the things they love.

Wow! I love how you remove certain characters in your work to emphasize or drive certain points home. It is really powerful and touching. Somehow it just makes me so emotional.
"I see you. We see you."
We all want to be seen, heard... Something.. Just not to be forgotten or overlooked.
So much wealth in your work. I am sorry you went through that(gallery & police). But wow! The way you are using art to speak out. Not only for yourself but for all who have and will go through the same.
THERE IS INDEED SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL IN TRUTH TELLING.
Thank you for this powerful talk.

I'm not really an art person but I just said "oh my gosh, so cool" so many times. Such a creative smart human.

This artwork is so beautiful and powerful. I felt emotionally moved and I kept thinking over and over again, "I really hope this is exhibited somewhere on the West Coast when we're free to visit museums again." People need to have more conversations. Art is a great way to begin.

"I see you", loved that part. People do awful things, and we decide to jail them away. Sometimes, some of them, in some ways, become better just by feeling they're being seen and aknowledged. I agree with Mr. Kaphar here. For me it's a beautiful solemnity, to see an "unworthy" is, sometimes, for some of them (and for some of us), in some ways, to see oneself. We start seeing others with the tenderness we deep down would like to be seen with. An exchange of looks that makes us better, again just sometimes, with some ones, in some ways.

Thanks for clear and understandable speech, especially for non-native English speakers like me. How quietly and spiritually it's told, not as a toungetwister that I listen to. The speech is provided from the heart, consequently it has entered into my heart, because there are comparable things with real life cases.

The past does not have to be your prison. You have a voice in your destiny. You have a say in your life. You have a choice in the path you take.

This is so beautiful, so moving! And how much we as members of the "subordinate caste" have to do to create a future that is autonomous and independent of integration, affirmative action, or undoing systemic racism---how much we must transform grief into healing. . . .Bless Titus Kaphar and his generation and generations to come.

Our society needs beauty. Even though we all are drawn to people who are familiar to us - I believe in seeing the beauty in all people - both physical and character beauty. The cruelty and thoughtlessness of people ...if only they could understand the beauty of creation and individuality of each human being. I love that you are acting on your belief about beauty and sharing it in communities where it is needed.
