Upgraded to KEF R11 for about 3 months, very satisfied both on movie and classical music, the 4 low frequency units are very good on dynamic and speed, very capable for orchestra though still need help with subwoofer, but only need to set on 50~60Hz crossover, R11 response frequency is 46Hz~28KHz, may be >50K$ speakers no need for subwoofer, it's just 5K$.

This is some great advice on planning out a home theater - lot of angle covered and well thought out! I learned some of this the expensive way. I always believed strongly in a center channel for movies until I had a dedicated listening area then I noticed a few things. First, surrounds are almost a waste in a small room because it's more distracting than cool. Bigger room makes it creepy for movies like Jurassic Park, but small rooms make it obvious where the sound is coming from (takes away from the magic). Second, when I went to stereo only, I got a much bigger presentation. Dialogue was still crystal clear but things like the sound of a boat moving across the screen was really cool and noticeable. With a center channel the sound of the boat was coming out of just the center. It seems a lot of movies today are being mixed with the idea that most people will be using a soundbar. Disney is notorious for this with the Marvel films. Spider-man sounds way better than the rest because Sony handles the mixing. Everything from Disney seems to come out of the center channel. So I actually prefer movies in 2 channel (with subs). The only issue that you raised (and it's a good one) is having one sweet spot. But I still think slightly off-axis 2.0 is better than a soundbar. And going 2.0 means being able to get a noisy AVR out of my system and one less speaker.

I think B&W does it great for both. Obviously a little more on the Music side but the 700 series equipment is Awesome for movies.

I have 5 .2 theater system Marantz 7705 and 7055 and Elac Speaks F5 like to upgrade all, looking at Crown, ATI, Monoprice Evotiva, PS Audio, REL, Dali Goldenear, Focal and SVS also looking to mono block all speakers so they can have there own amp and should go with modular like Emotvia and Monoprice or go with toroidal transformer?
