If you’re a Leica user, don’t yet have a Leica lens and want an all purpose 35mm then believe me, any Summicron version from the first to the last will serve you just fine. I happen to have the one Matt and a lot of people don’t like, that Canadian version IV (urgh!). I love it! If that’s the ‘worst’ one….look as I say, any of them will serve you just fine.
Agreed. So many of the other brands are nearly as much as the Leica, so just find one you can afford. I was looking for a long time and ended up with version 2 (with the tab), made in Canada, still it its box. But mine fits the e39 filters? I’m guessing there was some overlap in features. I got it used for just under 1k and I love it.
I bought a v26e Canada many years before there was a youtube...didn't know I had junk until others (NOT MATT) sneered at it. Works just fine but I did buy a ULTRON 35/2 for times I want a more modern rendering.
I can confirm that the V1 8E with goggles is also the best one for street photography. You just put it on the SL as demonstrated in this video and you get a lot of funky looks straight into your camera!
I own the original 8-Element 35 Summicron (Non-Goggles). Because the coatings are SO SOFT, they're tough after a C L A to find one that still retains its internal coatings and are devoid of frost haze (glass damaged by the acidic lube out-gas). - Before settling on mine, I had to go through 4 lenses to find my current CLEAR sample. Now, this lens is amazing. Its sharpness is comparable to the first 1996 ASPH model, AND, Matt forgot to mention that the 8E also has a unique W-Depth-of-Field (At infinity, even wide-open, certain close fields of view are sharp !)...
I purchased my Summicron 35mm version 3 in 2010 for 700 Euro. It’s not bad it’s beautiful vintage lens. I would get it over every Voigtländer, 7artisans or what so ever. I paired with a modern Summilux 35 fle. Couldn’t be happier.
Thanks Matt for the summary of all versions. It was really confusing for me, but your video helped a lot. I like the LLL 8E collapsible for portraits, because the sharpness falloff from center to outer mid is not to bad. So it's still good when you place your model off center.
Good stuff. Looking forward to the nokton classic comparison. I feel like that one is a gem for more vintage rendering. I’ve also read but never seen direct comparisons that the Voigtlander ultron is like a more modern v4 (which seems right as it has different rending to the asph summicron).
I've got a tatty Canadian KOB but all metal, and it's fabulous. Patrick Colpron (he who made the ultimate Steel Rim review) reckons it, the original Steel Rim (or a 216 transition V2) and the double AA render nicest of all the Leica 35mm, with possible exception of the 35 apo, of course. If you ever get a chance to try the double aspherical 35, jump at it, by the way. That is really something exceptional. Do you think the version 1 is worth buying, based on your experience of it and Thomas's, and if so at what price? Oh, and wishing you a very successful and fun New Year. 40K subscribers is just around the corner!
Yes the AA is great and the Steel rim has lots of character. I’ve used both. Check eBay for the v1, they are great if can find a clean copy at a great price.
Happy new year, Matt! I'm waiting for and am listening for the BBC and the chiming of Big Ben ringing in the new yesr. 4pm here on the West coast of the US. All the best in 2025!!!
Matt, have you tried a Leica Summilux-R 35 mm f/1.4? Its MTF charts suggest sharpness and acutance are not this lens’s strengths (Leica Pocket Book, 9th edition, p. 305), but the price of a used copy in the US was strikingly high. I don’t know if the seller is playing off the lens’s relative rarity (only ~ 4,500 were produced) or the lens offers a distinct and unusual rendering that’s “worth” the coin. One plus: the lens can focus to 0.5 m. The v3 lens you showed here renders nicely.
I own a V4 🇩🇪 35mm Summicron which I bought new with my M6 back in 1994: my preferred go to Summicron by far compared to my 90mm, 50mm & 28mm Asph. Good review Matt, thanks and happy 2025
Hey Matt✌ First of all a healthy new 2025 for the new year the best and creative power. And what you have set yourself, of course that your channel continues to grow👌 I had version 4 to test years ago because I was supposed to buy it for a friend because I lived nearby and he comes from the north of Germany😁At that time I didn't have a Leica and only adapted it to the Sony A7II which I still have. And I was really enthusiastic👌And it was exactly the KOB version. And now since last year when I was finally able to fulfil my Leica dream, of course I had to get a 35 Summicron and it was exactly in the bundle of the 240 with the 35. I didn't really care, but I was all the more pleased that it was made in Wetzlar. For me it just feels great to the touch and I use it on the M3/M240 but also on the Sony when I feel like taking photos with it. I already had the metal lens hoods with me 👌I then got the square one but it's not what you're used to. I was wondering when you would make a video exactly about the Summicron and BAM it came just right, although it was still produced in the old year and also published as a kind of treat at the end of the year😁 Lg Anderl
Matt-- Happy New Year! The best of your reviews IMHO have focused (intended) on lighting, metering, and posing. However, once you get involved with all the distinctions among Summicrons (v1 to v7; Summicron ASPH 1 vs. 2) with all the differences between Leica lenses and the ever increasing boatloads of replicas from SE Asia---LLL, Thy Pooch (canine?) TT Artisans, Funnyfarm, etc., I find my cortex overloaded. I have pointed out in various RUclips fora that the large majority of the pantheon of great photographers used a very few lenses to achieve their magnificent results (and none of them seems to have mentioned Bokeh--this is a different subject.) In particular I don't see the need in distinguishing the different Summicrons. Perhaps my geriatric vision is to blame?
Thanks Jeremy, yes there are different types of photographers. Some do everything with one lens, others love trying all the different options to find which suits them the best. Eventually I’ll settle on a few but currently it’s my job to test them.
I had the Nokton 35f1. 4II and I enjoyed it but I never bonded with it. My finger was always slipping when I tried to focus. Very uncomfortable small focus tab. I didn't like the way it felt. Also the distortion bothered me for what I shoot. I ended up going to the Leica store and took the hit and got a brand new crispy 35 Summicron ASPH v2. Basically I wanted the one with the least distortion. I can say it's amazing. Wonderful focus tab. Perfect pair to my 50 Summicron. You can tell that the photo has more contrast and has a more modern look than the 50 Summicron which isn't ASPH, but it's not so much that it looks too corrected (like the APO-lanthar for example). It's a modern but beautiful image. It took me a while to decide because the used KOB especially the prices are so crazy you might as well get a brand new ASPH.
I’ve tried a lot of lenses and a lot of 35mm Summicrons. I think my overall favorite Leica lens now is the 35mm Summicron 8E (without Goggles). Just a lovely classic rendering.
Hi Matt...thanks for the review. I've been anxiously waiting for this since you mentioned it a few months ago. I own the V26e Canada and just wanted to add a couple of comments. My lens is threaded for filters unlike the copy you reviewed (39mm). When it comes to lens hoods...be careful...everyone insisted to me that the proper hood was #12585...NOT...without testing I took the lens to Yellowstone Park. Every photo taken with this lens/hood combination had "clipped" corners..very disappointing. The proper hood is #12504...I verified with a digital camera. (Digital was not around when I first got the lens). I use the V2 when I desire slightly softer images. I settled on the VM 35mm ULTRON for most other work. I also have VM 35/1.2 NOKTON III for low light. Now that I'm retired Leica glass is out of reach for me but I'm very happy with Voigtlander unless a bag of cash money falls from the sky....unless it crushes me haha.
which one do you have the Ultron 1.7/35 Voigtländer? I also have a few 35s the one that was the cheapest but has been in my possession for a very long time is the Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 2.4/35 with M42 as a screw mount also adapted to the M240 With the lens hood mine was already equipped with the right one when I bought it.👌👌
1960-1990 Non-aspherical Summilux 1.4 is my fav. Coma/SA galore at 1.4. W-Nikkor 3.5cm 1.8 is also really nice. Super sharp lenses become boring quickly.

@Odins.Valhall 35/f2 ULTRON.
Based on Matt s review 35/2 is smaller, lighter and sharper etc than the 1.7...(though the 1.7 is a great lens by itself).

The 35mm f2 Ultron is a great lens too. I still use mine sometimes (it's sharper than the pre-asp Leica)
can you share how to block the infinity lock on the light lens lab?
thank you
I read on a forum people have used art of a matchstick but I've not tried it myself. Maybe check Google for tips.

I’ve not tested together but Ultron is closer to v5/v6. Not sure about CA but Leica are usually better corrected and sharper corners as a general rule.
Hi Matt! Happy new year! Will you do a test about the Light Lens Lab 50mm f2 rigid some day? THX
Thanks yes. I have the lens coming for review
Talking about returned lenses. I tried the TTArtisan 90 f.125 and liked its rendering, BUT it was heavy like 1kg! Have you ever tried that lens?
Yes it's a big lens! I was going to make a video ages ago as used it. I might need to use again before I can make a video as a refresher.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Do you own it?
