    Firstly, I want to say how much I love your energy and enthusiasm. It makes for a very nice viewing experience. I know that not a lot of people liked this movie, but I still enjoyed it overall. I loved Linda and Arnold's mama and papa bear energy, and it was great to see them together again. The Rev-9 really won me over as well and might be my favorite villain in the series.

    • @ettcha
      @ettcha 10 месяцев назад +2

      Does the learning switch count as canon? If no, okay. Terminators will inevitably grow beyond their programming given time. If yes, why would skynet send a learning enabled terminator? It's not something that can happen accidentally, someone/something had to flip the switch, so how did Carl come about? The risk of units with learning enabled deviating from mission due to outside influences or causing other issues after it's mission would be unacceptably high.

    • @heinrichagrippa5681
      @heinrichagrippa5681 6 месяцев назад

      Doesn't T3's idea of an "inevitable ending" kind of undermine the entire "no fate but what we make for ourselves" message of T2? The whole point of that movie was the idea that "Hey, what if instead of the reactive, back-to-status-quo solution of 'make sure John lives so he can be Captain Hero of The Future' we do something a bit more proactive and just avert Judgement Day altogether?" T3 completely backtracks on that and says "Nah, Judgement Day and Great Savior John are hard-canon events that always have and always will happen no matter what." I'd say this movie is _more_ faithful to T2. It at least had the balls to commit to the events of T2 changing the future and preventing Skynet and Judgement Day, even if that doesn't necessarily mean all future problems are now solved forever.

After T2 I watched every episode in the cinema for the first time and it's sad to see, what has become of the Terminator movies. Even Genesys was "WTF" (to me) and the Dark Fate is even more so. This is obviously a subjective opinion but it is what it is. For me, along with many others, the story ended with T2. (Regardless of this, I still liked T3 and T4.)

    I think they missed a golden opportunity with Rise of the Machines, part 3 after Judgement Day. What I was thinking when they announced that part 3 of this franchise was gonna happen way back then, my idea was that maybe Kyle Reese would be sent back to a time when John Connor was a little older but he would get sent back accompanied by an Arnold Terminator. The terminator would be there to protect both Kyle AND John while Kyle would think his mission is to protect only John. Kyle would still not know he is John's father and the Terminator would instruct John not to tell him, either. The premise of this would be that it is a practical training of for Kyle because John in the future knows he has to send HIM, specifically, back to 1984 to protect his mother and John wants Kyle to have some idea about what is going to happen later on. They could've had TWO bad terminators for Kyle and the good Terminator to deal with. And as for the timeline, it would still seem as though Skynet could not have sent a terminator in part 3 because they destroyed Cyberdine in part 2. However, the POV of this entire franchise is from that of the future. So, in the timeline of Skynet and the human resistance of the future, Skynet attempted to k*ll John Connor when he was that age in part 3 FIRST. Naturally, the human resistance of the future responded by sending Kyle and the Arnold terminator. And ONLY after Rise of the Machines did Skynet send a terminator back to 1984 to try to k*ll Sarah Connor. So, part 3 happened first in Skynet's timeline, then part 1. It would've worked. And the storyline wouldn't break up.
    Anyway, great reaction. I really like this movie, too.

    I actually enjoyed this one more than Salvation or Genisys. It had some interesting ideas but like the others since T1 the emphasis on out of control, ever more over the top stunts and overpowered characters just robs a lot of story and character depth.
    I hope you do the TV series. It benefits from a lower budget, ironically, as the focus is more on characters, dilemmas and concepts more than bombastic action sequences. In many ways it recaptures the dire "end of the world" feeling of T1 as Sarah and John battle an ever more dangerous Skynet as it iterates in both the past and a strange, awful future. They are aided by a strange female terminator, sent back by a future John with a very different agenda from the one who sent Reese back. The harsh realities of evading the law and the even grimmer necessities of creating a
    guerrilla Resistance are shown.
    Lena Headey(pre Game of Thrones) BRINGS it as Sarah, and Summer Glau is a manipulative terminator who is an unreliable narrator of the future to John and Sarah.

    Again, a good action movie, but they made T2 superfluous. What was the point of the best movie in the franchise if John died anyway?
    Also this Arnold contradicts everything Kyle said about Terminators in the 1st movie.

    • @heinrichagrippa5681
      @heinrichagrippa5681 6 месяцев назад

      Honestly, that's what I felt about T3. The whole theme of T2 was "No fate but what we make for ourselves" and their decision that, rather than have the future play out with John as the leader of a post-apocalyptic resistance, it would be infinity better to just avert Judgement Day all together. It's the entire reason they destroyed all the Dyson research and even Arnold insisted on being melted. Then T3 backtracked on that and made Skynet and Judgement Day an inevitability that can never be changed.
      You say "What was the point of the best movie in the franchise if John died anyway?" to which I can reply "What was the point of the best movie in the franchise if Judgement Day happened anyway?" I think "Judgment Day is averted, but one kid dies" is better than "Judgement Day is inevitable and trying to stop it was futile, billions still die, but hey, at least John gets to play out his 'destined hero' role." John getting meaninglessly, brutally gunned down only seems dark and nihilistic on the surface because as emotional humans we are wired to be more attached to individual characters than "humanity" at large. Objectively, "Judgment Day just happens regardless" is the more dark and nihilistic outcome, but we tend to overlook that because we just loooove our hero stories.
      Any sequel to T2 inevitably means undermining its otherwise "happy" ending. Especially if after everything, it's still bloody Skynet doing the same shit once again like nothing happened. At least in this scenario, the future _did_ actually change from their efforts. Skynet never came into existence and John Connor never needed to be the savior of humanity. However, it also accepts that a new unknown future isn't necessarily without its own tragedies. It plays with the idea of fate by saying "Yes, you _can_ change the future", but also says "...yet that new unknown future, even if technically "better", isn't automatically perfect forever, doesn't guarantee your personal happiness, and doesn't mean some other similar catastrophic event can't happen a few decades later."
      Personally, as someone who's sick of messianic "chosen one" narratives, I _like_ this subversion in which John isn't some very very super-special boy ordained by fate, who will always be the hero in every possible timeline, and instead allows the possibility that in the new future he and Sarah created, Judgement Day doesn't happen and John doesn't need to become The Great Savior... but that doesn't mean nothing bad can ever happen either: the dark irony being that a future where John doesn't need to save humanity is also one in which he doesn't necessarily have to survive. I prefer the idea that it's not John himself who was inherently special, but just that _someone_ can rise to the occasion and become what humanity needs when they need it.

    • @erickleefeld4883
      @erickleefeld4883 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@heinrichagrippa5681 You said it all perfectly. I used to totally agree with your point, “Any sequel to T2 inevitably means undermining its otherwise ‘happy’ ending.” Yeah, you mean Miles Dyson sacrificed himself for nothing because Judgment Day is simply inevitable? But then James Cameron and his collaborators all did something VERY interesting in this movie. His three movies together reach a deeper meaning that the end of the world is constantly hanging over our heads, but “we all can change the future” and keep working to prevent it.
      We see a whole new predestination paradox playing out. Dani becomes the leader of the new Resistance precisely because she was hunted down, and she met Sarah to train her. The Legion cyber-warfare technology was reverse-engineered from all the Rev-9’s hacking of surveillance systems. Grace’s cybernetic enhancements will be developed from the x-rays that the CBP detention facility took. The future Commander Daniela Ramos recognized the scared girl Grace, when she said her name. The list goes on.
      But then at the end of the movie, Dani vows to change the future in order to save Grace. She is going to do the same thing that Sarah did to Skynet, and stop Legion’s existence. And then the cycle will keep on going forever, between destruction and hope.

      @@heinrichagrippa5681 Very eloquently said!
      I think you're spot on when it comes to the reaction people have to John's death. In a way, I think the fact that so many people reacted negatively to it just shows that Dark Fate succeeded in getting the emotional reaction it wanted from the audience. The only problem is, ironically, Arnold's star power. I don't remember if it was Miller or Cameron, but one of them said that the idea once Carl shows up was for the audience to hate him and be distrustful like Sarah is, but everyone just cheers because "omg it's Arnold yay!" It's easy to say just to disconnect it, but realistically, having one of Hollywood's most popular stars playing one of, if not his most iconic, roles, you were never gonna get anything else
      I also think Dark Fate is sort of self-contradictory about how the "fated messiah" thing, because while the story is very much about how Skynet being gone means that John's "destiny" as a saviour is rendered moot, it still pushes the narrative that Dani is the last and only hope for humanity after the new Judgment Day. I wish the movie had emphasized more than it doesn't *have* to be Dani. It could be her, and Grace desperately wants to save her, but it could be anyone
      I'd argue that as far back as T2 was when the series threw away the idea that John Connor *must* become the one and only savior of humanity. There's a reason Cameron hated the "happy future" ending and replaced it with the "black highway" ending. The whole point of the movie is that the future is not set. Nothing is certain, and we can only try to make the best future ourselves. In that regard, Dark Fate's decision to brutally murder him in the first two minutes honours the theme that T2 set up

    • @zingodoom

      James Cameron's talked about his ideas for a potential new Terminator, and I really hope he doesn't choose to do a complete reboot yet again. I know he's talked about how instead of just being "evil robot killer" again, he'd want to explore the complexity of AI and how it fits into society, and I think he's sitting on a goldmine with the setup Dark Fate has given for that kind of story
      There's *plenty* of room to continue from DF and do something with the new characters to explore that theme

      @@zingodoom In addition to Arnold’s star power, I think the audience also can’t help but see Carl as the endearing T-800 from T2, rather than some other random T-800 that independently happened to develop a conscience through his own experiences while being stranded in the past with no directive. Sarah is more acutely aware that of the three T-800s she’s encountered, two were soulless killing machines who murdered people she loved, and one was an anomaly who had been explicitly reprogrammed to protect John rather than kill him. Beyond the obvious fact that you can’t really expect any mother to be coldly rational and impartial towards her own child’s killer, it’s an important distinction that Carl is an unaltered T-800. It’s like trying to imagine that if the same horrifying T-800 from the _first_ film had succeeded in killing Sarah Connor - but then for whatever reason Skynet never became a thing - when left to its own devices for a few years might have independently become a pretty chill guy with a moral compass.
      As you mentioned with the idea of depicting AI as being more complex and having more depth to explore than “evil killer robots”, it’s interesting how Dark Fate subverts and completely reverses the “an AI with full unrestricted autonomy will inevitably turn homicidal” trope. That is, rather than an AI programmed to serve humans deciding to instead kill them, it’s an AI specifically programmed to remorselessly murder people deciding to _not_ continue doing that and additionally feel personal guilt for having done the very thing it was made for.

With T3, I remember being disappointed with Arnold, because it seemed slightly comical from the beginning, but I was blown away by what they did with the story of how Skynet came to be, and how John Conner developed. I love that it was something that he had to do rather than he wanted to do. In the end, T4, barely won for me, even though the movies to me were neck and neck. What made T4 barely win were actually because of the books and stories afterward that drew me into the T4 world more.

      IMO:
      1. The Terminator. (1984) For me, this is by far the best piece of the "series". (It was made as a single film. The story/concept of the sequel - which was fantastic thanks to Cameron - was a consequence of the success of the first film.)
      2. T2. One of the best sequels ever made, along with Back To the Future 2, Die Hard 2, Lethal Weapon 2, or Mad Max 2.
      --- After seeing the rest, the Terminator story ended here for me. ---
      3. (or 4.) T3. It was a nice experience to see it in the cinema but it is clearly a weaker story and mediocre compared to the previous ones.
      4. (or 3.) T4. We finally got to the future, the story isn't bad. Based on the story, I'd put it in third place. It was a shame to include the CGI Arnold. :)
      5. T5. To me, the story was a failed attempt to breathe life into the franchise. Some scenes were interesting (see 1984) but they could have written a more coherent story instead.
      6. T6. It is also a nice experience in the cinema but the story is weak and like the 5th episode, it tries to recreate/rethink the T-universe.

    The James Cameron Terminator Trilogy (acording to james Cameron's statements in interviews) = the Christian Bible:
    "The Terminator" = The Annunciation of Mary: The Archangel Gabriel (Kyle Reese) appears to Mary (Sarah Conner) to tell her that she will bear the Savior.
    "Terminator 2" = The flight of the Holy Family from Judea to Egypt to escape the killing of male infants by King Herod
    "Terminator Dark Fate" = The Book of Revelations and the Second Coming of the Savior

    John Connor was the savior of mankind and the hole purpose behind the 2 original movies. In this movie he died and ANOTHER savior took his place. This means that there is no purpose in saving anyone because another can always take their place, making the entire franchise meaningless... yeah, and some people left the theaters mid movie, so it shows how some hardcore fans were just disappointed with the movie. This and Terminator Genisys were just different failed attempts and a franchise revival.

    Though this one is better than Genisys, it's a very mixbag of good and bad.
    The good is that it got the tone and look just right. They brought the focus back to the chase and not all that time travel nonsense that plagued Genisys. Linda Hamilton and Arnold were highlights, of course. Overall, it's a technically competent film.
    The bad is that there is nothing in this film that is fresh. The action scenes are rote, the ideas are derivative, and the Rev9 is just a T-X that can separate and without the plethora of weapons. Just more stabby stabby.
    Dani is either a terribly written character who was equipped with plot armor and set to easy mode, or Natalia Reyes was absolutely wrong for the part. Either way, I couldn't buy a single thing about her. This 4'11 small fry is gonna convince all the desperate people in a post-apocalyptic world to join her and lead an army? That future flashback, where she single-handedly took down 3 people and gave a lame speech, was laughably cringe. Not to mention very unrealistic that Dani could take them on so easily. Those people would have shanked her in the back, took Grace's food, and went on their way.
    Grace is a Marcus Wright rip off with a side of Universal Soldier(that Van Damme movie) that makes no sense. So she's a super soldier sent to protect her, yet she gets weak and useless after a short time without some syringe cocktail and some ice? Good plan! Lol.
    Legion is just an off-brand Skynet that somehow came up with exact same technology even though Skynet's creation was averted in T2? Right.
    Dark Fate is just a creatively bankrupt attempt to appeal to "modern audiences" which failed miserably and is the reason we're not gonna see any more Terminators.
    Maybe it's for the best, though. The series peaked at T2, and no one else even tried to move the needle forward except for Salvation. T3 was a fine enough finale for the story, where John steps to the plate at the end to lead humanity to victory against Skynet.
    Remember, T1 established that we won the war and that it was the assassination attempt was Skynet's last ditch effort to prevent defeat. So Genisys and Dark Fate are just fanfic appendages.

      Personally, I disagree on the issue of the Rev-9 and Grace. Aside from the fact that one is a hybrid Terminator and the other is a human cyborg, they've got very little in common with the T-X and Marcus in terms of their backstories, appearances, and personalities.

    • @jessemoore7081
      @jessemoore7081 10 месяцев назад +1

      @nyarlathotep7321 I'm talking concepts of the character anesthetics, not character's personalities. What about the Universal Soldier bit, as well? That was almost verbatim like that movie. Enhanced soldier, needs ice to cool off from overheating, and an injection(though not for memory wipe).
      I'm saying there's nothing new about Dark Fate. Other than being able to separate the liquid from the endoskeleton, there's little to no difference between Rev9 and T-X except that T-X had actual weapons and not the stale and boring stabbing arms that peaked with the T-1000. The action set pieces are derivative of previous Terminator films, and the plane sequence was a mix of the zero-g scene in The Mummy 2017, and the midair tank scene in The A-Team movie(with a humvee). All leading up to yet another industrial complex final act where Grace's, like the T-850 in T3, power source is used to kill the rev9 and Arnold is yet again sacrificed.

      @@jessemoore7081
      Marcus: A human criminal on death row whose brain and organs are placed in a cybernetic shell by Skynet to serve as an infiltrator. He wakes up fourteen years after Judgment Day with no idea of how he is alive or what has happened to the world in that time. He takes the chance to start a new life while searching for clues about his past and ultimately comes into conflict with the fact that he is the creation of a genocidal machine intelligence.
      Grace: A human who was raised into a soldier after being found as a child in post-Judgment Day ruins. She was cybernetically augmented after sustaining injuries while combatting Legion’s Terminators but maintains that she is fundamentally human. She ultimately elects to go on a self-sacrificing mission into the past to protect the woman that saved her and molded her into who she is while encountering new faces from a secret past that she knew nothing about.
      Grace is in no way a "rip off" of Marcus. They look nothing alike, they have different backgrounds, different roles in their stories, different personalities, and different skill sets. The only real similarity between them is the fact that they're both cyborgs, and even then they're still vastly different since Marcus is effectively a Terminator with some extra meat where Grace is a human with cybernetic implants.
      As for the T-X and Rev-9, they're both Terminators with liquid metal components and hacking abilities, but the Rev-9 doesn't stand from the T-X because of gimmicky abilities, it stands out because of its design/concept along with how it approaches problems and interacts with its surroundings. It's got a distinct look that's more realistic than the alien-looking T-X and is a closer fit to the aesthetic of the series. It feels like a more natural evolution of the technology of the setting since it does a better job of combining the strengths of conventional and liquid metal Terminators while having hacking abilities that are more grounded in reality. Apart from that, the Rev-9 is almost certainly the most skilled infiltrator we've seen, able to not just mimic the looks and voices of people but intelligently alter its demeanor to take advantage of its surroundings. It's also the most lively and coordinated in combat, running, leaping, and dodging where most others will plod their way through fight scenes. For me, that makes it a more compelling villain than many of its predecessors. The Rev-9 is dangerous not just because it has some special ability that the heroes can't counter but because it's good at what it does.
      All fiction is derivative to some extent, so there's always going to be overlap between stories. You might as well make the argument that the Terminator was a rip-off of Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" because they're both about genocidal AI that nuked humanity while ignoring all the other differences between them. Or that the Terminator itself was a rip-off of Beilert Valance from Star Wars, since they're both metallic cybernetic skeletons covered in flesh.

    I think there is just too many good characters and they just gangbang the villain in every scene, even in Sarahs intro she singlehanded beats both terminators. I never felt any threat watching this movie. Think if they deleted Grace from the movie it could had worked better, to just have Sarah and Arnold be the protectors versus the new terminator. And then we could have had a 1v1 fight with Arnold versus the endoskeleton and Sarah versus the liquid terminator.

    I love this movie, have been telling people about it for years, and am glad to see more people discover and appreciate it.
    James Cameron’s three Terminator movies tell a sci-fi reimagining of the Virgin Mary, and all the ordeals and grief she has to go through. This was there in the first movie, as she’s told she will give birth to the savior of humanity, must escape persecution, and experiences her own sort of miraculous conception. Now take a look at the 3:19 mark in this video, seeing through Carl’s eyes at John’s body to confirm the kill - that imagery is NOT subtle. And then later on in the movie, Sarah directly name drops having to be Mary.
    In this version of the story, Sarah/Mary has to wait over 20 years to finally meet the returned John/Jesus, and for someone to tell her that her life and struggles have meant something. Carl is the Roman soldier who killed Christ, but then came to repent of what he’d done. At the end he brings himself and the Rev-9 down into their own sort of cross, his final words are a prayer, “For John,” and his last sight is looking up at Sarah and Dani for forgiveness before he dies.

      The movie has tons of bread crumbs about the same kinds of predestination paradoxes we saw in T1 and T2. Legion began as a cyber-warfare system - so it was probably reverse-engineered from the Rev-9’s hacking of computer servers and surveillance systems. Likewise, Grace’s cybernetic enhancements were developed from the x-rays that the CBP doctors took of her.

    People are going to hate me for this but in my opinion Dark Fate is the closest non-Cameron sequel in tone and style of T1 and T2 along with the tv show. We got our fast paced R rated action in style of T1 finally even though it lacks the charm and intelligence of Cameron films
    Going forward I like the concept of rev-9 being a fusion of T-800 and T-1000 technically. Just the general concept of rev-9 implies that the people behind these films finally figured out that it is impossible to top T-1000 as the villain so why not just make a villainous terminator as a combination of both models. Even Gabriel Luna admitted he wanted for rev-9 to be the best of both worlds terminator. No more terminators with fancy gadgets and nanobots crap. I really like the scene in which rev-9 absorbs the clothes on his body which is a hint or more so a confirmation that T-1000 did the same thing to the cop in T2 which makes a whole lot of sense. I also appreciate that weve got a human versus machine element again which is in spirits of T1. Grace although augmented is still a human fighthing highly advanced, technologically superior cyborg. To be fair Arnolds presence seems forced in the film
    Another plus for the film I have to mention is the setting. Terminator 1 and 2 hinted that Sarah felt far more secure outside of L.A. in desertes of Mexico where she was surrounded by people who actually cared for her. She also was equipped there with tons of weapons so the Mexico setting for DF made sense to me. Just wish weve seen more of Sarah coming back to her old buddy Enrique again in the film but oh well
