I think back in the 60's Gibson actually called this guitar the "Firebird I non-reverse" (yep, even though it had two P-90s), not to be mistaken with the (reverse) Firebird I (with just one firebird humbucker). Confusing, yes.
These are THE worst Firebird body shapes they ever made! It's so aesthetically hideous that it would be the sole reason I wouldn't buy one....if I could afford it

YES, you're right! (Kind of...) From '63-'65 they had one mini humbucker, and then they switched to TWO P-90s from '65-'69.

This is just an opinion. They balance better, are not as huge and unwieldy, sound tremendous and look cool.
