    I can count on one hand the types of monsters that you would WANT to bring to a party. Elysian Dragons, Halflings, Half-Elves dancing girls and Satyrs. A bit of debauchery accompanied by song and dance is enough to make any adventuring group crack a smile after a long day of "murder-hoboing".

    The myth seems to be a reference to an agricultural stage in humanity, a more primal one than modern humanity.
    They're linked with Bacchus or Pan, but by etymology alone...there seems to be most of all a reference to Saturn. I know satyrs predate Saturn, but for those that say that, I say Cronus. Cronus overthrew his father, Uranus (that was more primordial, than even Cronus was), to be...later on...also, overthrown by Zeus/Jupiter and a more modern version of society - Olympian. Layers upon layers of civilization, a motif of a new beginning, or even an "epoch ellipse" aka rebirth - changed, yet similar. Also titans seem to be coincidentally similar to nephilim, likely a similar metaphor.

    Just made a Satyr that is a psychopath and has developed more refined interests and pleasures as a result. Hes got the Faceless background and is a College of Whispers Bard. His whole theme is that he's a cold and calculating Satyr with no sense of humor who actively plays up a persona in which he pretends to be an enigmatic and boisterous College of Eloquence Bard to best abuse the bardic stereotypes to get himself ahead. His goal is to open a chain of underground, private taverns in which he can make more money as well as cultivate refined pleasure dens. His name is Koilos, roughly translating in Greek to Hollow.

    Hey AJ, fun video as always. I like the comparison of satyrs to "Chads". "Hey bro! Let's get hammered! I heard there were some nymphs taking a bath in the pool over there! Let's take a couple wineskins and go skinny-dipping! Got any more of that cheese and bread? I'm famished, let's make some sandwiches! Oh, check it out, nymphs! Hey baby, can I get you a drink?!?" lolololol!

    Satyrs are one of my favorite humanoids. I love them so much, I even have home-brew ones that appear all over the world... a "descended" from "true Satyrs". Also, every world I create has at least one pantheon with my version of Pan, whose avatar is a Satyr. Every campaign involves at least one regular Satyr NPC, almost always a priest of or follower of Pan. Priestly granted powers of Pan always include Heart of Pan, which grants the priest a bonus to all physical actions when he gets buzzed... it is enough of a bonus to counter the beginning level of intoxication and even give a bonus so he only has a penalty (much reduced) when wasted. Also, a big bonus against sedatives (like booze), so drugging him or boozing him unconscious is really hard. The Heart of Pan also grants bonuses to many skills related to diplomacy, dancing, singing... skills related to being charming or entertaining in general. And, a priest of Pan is a lot closer to being a form of a Bard than a Cleric. My veterans are divided on the priesthood... either a useless class to take or a very interesting and handy one. Either way, Pan (my Satyr god) is a fun god... and the only god that might just show up in avatar form to hang out at a party that catches his attention. One time at a party, a PC party member said: "If you are actually Pan, I have Satyr horns." **poof** that character spent the rest of the campaign with Satyr horns, much to the amusement of Pan.

    When I think of the Sahara desert I think of goats and ibex. Desert satyrs allied with a brass dragon sounds like a good encounter. I am going to say the satyrs would be immune to the sleep gas breath weapon. That would be very significant in a battle. I think they would enjoy each others company greatly unless they clash for wanting to be center of attention.

    Playing a satyr monk in a modern high school campaign. Trying to figure out her background so this is deeply appreciated when trying to rework stuff for the setting I’m in. Thank you so much for posting this! (She’s “the art kid” of her school and it’s not very well known that she can kick ass. Her friend is a Leonin peace cleric which is kinda hilarious. She is raised by her aunt who is the “witch with the haunted house” of the neighborhood. How much that is true is unknown. That’s about all I have so far.)

      Played my 1st in the 80s. Half-Satyr actually. A satyr/elf. Bard class and I weilded an elven greatbow of heartwood(eventually). The DM had just read a novel series where satyrs had a shock attack. He added shocking grasp 1 per day per class level. I could use any number of levels in a single attack but could not use it again for 1 Turn per spell level used. I was a cute idea but I was ranged and cc focused any rarely used it. Obviously as a touch attack it didnt work with wooden bow and arrows.

    Although l haven't ever played Dungeons & Dragons and probably will not ever get a chance to, l really enjoyed your wealth of knowledge regarding the lore of satyrs. I was throughly entertained by the wonderful and extensive collection of illustrations that played while the lesson was being taught.
    It was a surprise to learn so much in less than twenty minutes. A curiosity about these creatures and others has arisen in me now that l have had my eyes opened to reality and have been shown the truth about our existence in this world.

    Did some say, Build Me *A Pickett Fence* to contain this lore?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  5 лет назад +2

      The name originates (in 1690) from the French “piquet,” from the verb “piquer,” meaning “to pierce,”, logs sharpened to shield archers from cavalry. Needing to demarcate and perhaps defend their land, New World colonists installed fences of rough pickets, bare or painted white. So, they are not used to contain, rather, to exclude. My surname derives from Silver miners in around Glastonbury who gained a noble title and coat of arms after putting down a revolution against the crown, it is a pretty cool coat of arms, three silver pick axes on a sable black shield with a green and white plume, mounted by a gauntlet fist brandishing a pickaxe as a weapon of war. The family motto is "Always Ready".

    Sounds like my clever, yet distrusting drow would have quite the adventures with his polar opposite.
    While he would have an attitude of sickened discipline, manic attraction and powers of observation with smooth and confident demeanor switching to distrusting, cold glares of razor sharp concentration addled with deadly quiet resolve, the satyr would be a good culmination of all the traits mentioned in the video, albeit more innocent in nature as she perhaps just ran away from her elven or human family.
    Being a drow mesmerised the same by the surface as a faun to adventure while sickened with the under dark and their monotonaus ways and cruel idiocy, he would see many similarities to how this fauness would interact with him similar to how the women in his society did whatever they wanted.
    Yet he would be reminded of the kindness that his sister gave him and how this Satyr would inspire such independence of thought with him as well, which is why he went on this journey on the first place, although being a drow he doesnt really even realize this.
    Maybe he could even have a love interest? Idk, but it kinds sounds interesting...

      Why that's part of the mythos. Are you saying that the cultural history of another group has to conform to you? Isnt that intolerance? They where Chad's not rapists. If you dont like it why play it? Our historical mythos had their purposes in their times. They taught us that if you play with fire you will get burned. Are we now going to have vegetarian mind flayers? I hope I was able to get my point across correctly, I currently have 47 races available to play. And role playing is very much part of the game to have fun. Dont like one then pick one you do like there are lots to choose from. Some have gender requirements, others class restriction, still others level caps. Each is unique with a seperate flavor. Why make them all cookie cutter boxes?

    I'm picturing a Satyr character who's in some ways the opposite of the typical Satyr. He'd be more of a cynical stand-up comic kind of performer & almost always have some cup of hot caffeine instead of alcohol in his hand. I can see him wielding levels of Vicious Mockery to the point where some weaker willed opponents might simply run away from shame, at the very least. If you're thinking of a furry legged Lewis Black or Bill Hicks that's the direction I can see them going.

    I like the lore that were the original half-fey made in the eleven invasion of the material plane. I'm imagining the 1st scouts being asked what are most resilient creatures in the material plane? And saying, well there these things called goats that can eat almost anything. They have hooves but can climb mountains and even trees. And horns to charge their enemies. Cool will definitely need to use that design in making our new emissary scouts we're creating.

    I never understood this part about d&d. The creature being used is a FAUN, I guess they can still be counted as satyrs, but know this: fauns are satyrs, but not ALL satyrs are fauns. Satyrs were only shown with mule tails and ears, and RARELY mule feet. It's the later fauns of the Roman age that brought the new species of satyr to light, the fauns. Later after the dark ages, the renosaunce age brought in FEMALE fauns, thus the intro to females, and MALE nymphs to the mix.

    4:58 Is there some kind of a precedent for humans being dumber on average than all other races? I thought they had +1 across all stats, they should be innately better in every way compared to most races as they get usually just +2 to one stat and +1 to another and that's it.
    So are humans dumber on average or is there something else that attracts so much attention to humans? Steel dragons focus on human forms, satyrs mess with humans etc.

    • @hiddenone5456
      @hiddenone5456 5 лет назад +1

      Dumber? You mean hungry for more? Humans are not stupid nor dumb just a younger race with a pretty short lifespan and so some crave power which can blind us it doesn't make us stupid but ignorant to rules of game... I mean that's what I take from it. Maybe "Naive" is probably a better word to describe this trait the satyrs take advantage of. I'v been playing DnD for a while now and humans can be great at everything I wouldn't ever consider then "Dumber"... probably helps they get a extra feat too.

    • @thedarkmaster4747

      Many races dumber and many races smarter. Humans are not a specialist race.

    • @ralanbek95
      @ralanbek95 5 лет назад +2

      The attention is on humans so often because from the outset Gygax thought of D&D as innately humanocentric. Humans play the game, so the game should be, for the most part, about humans and how they navigate through a fantastic world.

    • @beastwarsFTW
      @beastwarsFTW 5 лет назад +2

      I thinks its more that humans are the most common race. They breed fast and know how to industrialize, its hard to find a land that dosn't have humans or some race that was once human. Also steel dragons living among us is kind of an honer as they like our lives enough to mimic them.

    • @padalan2504
