    5th edition says unicorns are celestials not fey. this is just the only time iv been turned off by one of your videos. it really seems like your not using current information for this making it way less helpful then all your other videos. Unicrons in 5e are created by a god and placed on the material plane it says so in the monster manual.
    Im sorry but so much of this video contradicts current canon on unicorns that wizards put out.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 лет назад +50

      You're damn right it does, and I stand by it. WoTC is within its rights to change whatever they like, but what they are calling a unicorn in the 5E monster manual is actually the Celestial Charger (I mention them in the video), not the Sylvan Unicorn which is a fey creature of Chaotic Good alignment. I thank you for the critique Kyle, it gives me a chance to vent a little bit about some of the details that have been thrown out for no good reason (imagine how people who are used to the unicorns of every previous edition feel about this sudden fundamental change?)

    • @kyleellis9177
      @kyleellis9177 6 лет назад +17

      Oh i fully agree with you about wizards changing stuff not always being the right choice. I'm in the kobolds should be dogmen camp. I wish Unicorns had the bit from mythology were if your particularly lustful your presence causes a unicorn so much pain it kills you in rage.
      My critique comes more from the fact that all your other videos are inline with current lore and this one either lacks a piece at the beginning saying its the one based on previous editions for clarity or i missed it. all your other videos a new player could go to adventure league with and have the right information.

    great video AJ. i find unicorns to be such a underrated creature that most dont realize how powerful and smart of a creature it truly is . i find a lot of new players think of them as just magical horses and either shun it or dont realize the amount of effort one needs to put in to have one as a mount

      Stay a virgin? because being around the unpure causes them physical pain. the really lustful actually incite a blind rage in a unicorn and causes it to attack

    I actually had a forest corrupted by a dark force having an evil version of fey creatures. Unicorns were among them, like pixies, brownies, and sprites. It was a horror show for my players to kill them, especially when they got to destroying the corrupting force. Every being corrupted turned back to normal... and the bodies of those the player characters have slain were still there. Mind-screw. They killed more good creatures than the corrupting force in their blunt-force invasion of the black forest. The forest revived was nearly devoid of fey life.
    My players created a quest to undo their damage in fixing the black forest. I'm kind of a d^ck with intrigue and twists. At least I keep it interesting and often fun. The corrupt (evil) unicorn random encounters were epic because of allies. I'm actually surprised my players survived their blunt-force version of going into the Black Forest and getting to the corrupting core.
    I had a strategic plan they could discover and several paths they could have taken, even investigative clues. Nope, they plowed through the path of most resistance... and won. Kudos and regrets.

    The polymorphing unicorn sounds like a fun character to put in my urban campaign. Maybe the leader of a warrior monastery. I've been trying to come up with a good list of VIP citizens that one does not screw with. I've got an Ifriet living in a lighthouse, a Steel Dragon as a noble socialite, a Gold Dragon as the Field Marshal of the military, and a tabaxi, beholder, and wererat as the triumvirate leaders of the thieves guild. And I'm taking a mix of Hogwarts Teachers and Unseen University Staff Members as higher members of the Local Wizard's Tower (I figured Tower would be a good term for a collection of wizards. Like a murder of crows or a coven of witches.) Basically, when I send my players to the ball, I want to be able to unleash holy hell and confusion should anything untoward were to happen. [Insert Maniacal DM Laughter here.]

    Roughly 85 years ago in Cormyr there a somewhat boom in the black markets in regard to Unicorn products, ranging from their blood, organs, hide, flesh and of course their horns, now the thing is that well these unicorns that were killed were originally a descendant line of the ones that made part of the legendary High Elven Cavalry belonging to the kingdom of Cormanthyr, based around my investigation roughly 10 or so were slain, but its got more interesting when I found several ceremonial daggers made from intact uncarved unicorn horns, handle was a form elven silver, turns out the guys behind this whole ordeal manage to stumble on one of the old tombs in which these fabled Elven Knights were buried, correction mausoleum, they managed to do dob what was left of the grave, it looks like there were roughly 30 sarcophaguses, 20 were ransacked, armor, weapons, bones, especially the unicorn ones, managed to seal it up by having a part of its main inwall collapse, but damage was done, still had enough time to take a lot of notes, drawn some pictures, translated names and stories, etc. so that should help the Cormyr Royal Academy's historical department,

    Man, I miss proper unicorns. Now they've seemingly become one with the celestial charger which im not entirely a fan of. I played an Eladrin Swordmage in 4e and it was a lot of fun to play a sorta... Chaotic Good but highly militant, straight faced, bootstrap fey as a counter to the general whimsy of the fey?
    It was enjoyable to play this character because they didn't LIKE the feywild. They hated the _weird_ of the place, but even in their contempt of the ficalness of the realm they had an ingrained respect and admiration for the beasts, going so far as to carry one as a standard.
    On the prime material plane its a bit silly to pick something so... Ficticious, childish even - Her companions even though as much and mocked her incessantly about it for... About 11 levels and 8 years in-game time.
    The mockery came to a swift stop when the group (against her wishes) decided that it was time that I get started on my paragon path quest, so off to the feywild we went so she could learn more about shielding folks. After a protracted journey to the academy where she originally learned to fight she was allowed to speak with the founder of the academy, as all before her had done.
    Enter Head Master Madjalor, the Evershield. A unicorn. Essentially a mix between Sir Patrick Stewart character tropes + Sean Connery character tropes in unicorn form, the crew (and myself) are quite enthralled by his intelligence, wisdom, worldly expierence and great advice. It wasn't our first time dealing with a legendary creature, the head of the sorcerer's clan was a gold dragon and we had been doing quests for her for much of our tenure.
    But this was the first time it felt personal. Namely for my character, but there was definitely a "favorite" ancient npc now, he wasn't stingy with assistance or getting personally involved and readily engaged everyone in the party, even our dark pact warlock shade (though he wouldn't allow that pc within 30ft of him). That arc culminated in her retiring to learn and teach at the school for a time, since I needed to take a break from gaming for a move. During said move the crew had gotten themselves in a pickle with a hag and her formoran goons looking to dominate a living swamp and unleash it upon the wilds.
    I was able to Skype myself in for a session, wherein I ride in on a unicorn and seamlessly transitioned between mounted combat and foot combat in a living bog of decay with big mud fist-pillars trying to stop us. It was... Pretty fuckin _fey_ but I'm not sure what's more high fantasy than an elf wizard-warrior riding a unicorn to fight depression in geological form...
    -ill spare you the jokes about her "riding" unicorn horn though because he was a happily spoken for magic horse.-

    I had read in xanathars that a warlock can have a Unicorn as a Patron. I had an idea to make a character whose basic backstory is that he was a bugbear chief of was considered evil even by bugbear standards. This cruel chieftain was, powerful, deviously cunning and possessed of an ego and narcissism rarely seen. As a youth, he had killed all the members of the tribe he was born into for no other reason than they knew his true name. The chief believes that names are for those who lack the strength and will to claim title and power. Once he matured he had grown to be large even by bugbear standards and possessed a natural talent for fighting and savagery that it wasn't long before he gathered his own tribe and soon became the chief of one of the strongest bugbear tribes to ever have existed.
    years passed and the chief's power and tribe grew in strength, but nature cares little for martial prowess, and as game grew fewer the Cheif was forced with starvation or to travel through the woods to a fabled enchanted section of forest that was sure to have plenty of game, as well as plenty of forest guardians. after weeks of slow going travel due to terrain and the insistence of the chiefs generals to bring as many of the tribe as possible to deal with the forest guardians who they would be lucky not to encounter. Alas, while on a hunt and stumbled upon an area of the forest that seemed more lush and healthy, as though it was enchanted. The chief had long ago captured a druid and after years of torture and abuse developed a kind of Stockholm syndrome toward the chief and was with them on the hunt. the chief ordered the druid to cast faerie fire and it revealed a couple of unicorn foals, pixies and other fantastical creature's. As soon as the creatures realized they were seen they became aggressive, The Tribe immediately attacked and the great battle commenced between a tribe of bugbears vsFirbolgs, treants, animals that seemed to out of nowhere, even the terrain seemed to be constantly changing.
    In the end, the tribe prevailed but suffered great casualties, around 2/3 of the tribe lay dead and scarcely a one escaped without a severe injury. They butchered the dead, along with the firbolgs and strange animals, the Chief himself killed the Unicorn foals himself, clawing off strips of flesh and savoring every agonizing moment of the newborns' pain. Though many of the tribe were dead, the tale of this battle and recognition the chief felt it would bring him was more than worth the loss off of those who are too weak to survive. A few days travel the chief and his tribes' survivors arrived back home and settled in for well-earned rest. As the chief laid down to sleep that night he dreamed of a great unicorn who was furious with him. The Unicorn Said " you have murdered my kin and defiled my glade. death would be too good for you, from this day forth I own you and curse you to incapable of acting on your evil nature, instead, you will be compelled to do good unless I say otherwise"
    when the chief awoke he noticed he had a long Unicorn Horn on his head that seemed intangible, with a sort of light around it. As well his hands seemed too always feel like they were still covered and dripping with the blood of the innocent unicorn foals. When he tried to show it to his tribe, no one could see anything, not even the druid. in anger, he went to strike the druid but found he couldn't, and instead felt a great amount of shame, along with a strange compulsion to free him. Realizing the situation, and what he was now, he knew his tribe would banish him if they found out about his affliction, or track and kill him if he tried to run. there was only one option, he poisoned the remaining members of the tribe that night and freed the captive Druid. Now the Chief wanders the lands, doing good deeds and protecting the helpless and hating every minute of it.

I also recommend the Ki-Rin (oriental unicorn-dragon-like spirit, maybe the closest thing to a dragon-unicorn hybrid I can think of), undead unicorns (I personally like to use them sorta as the old school undead knight with a circlet of mastery to enslave/free the tragic beast), and pink unicorns that are only used by the boldest of DMs.

    I'm just a lowly freeloader, enjoying your hard work without paying for it, but I have a request/suggestion for a video: the Revenant. They're a fairly unique type of undead with a lot of potential to add to your game's story, or you could just use them as an interesting side quest. You could retell "The Crow" as a high fantasy adventure! ...but keep it dark and gritty. I just don't think Eric Draven would have much appeal frolicking around as an elven bard...

    However, I have a request: could you maybe "revisit" your older videos and update the subtitles? Because usually the autogenerated subtitles are not great, and at times, especially with names, I have trouble to understand what is said. In such instances it'd be great to be able to turn on the subtitles to make sure I understand it correctly.
    In this video, for example, you mentioned so many varieties of unicorns, but with some names I had trouble understanding, and I find it somewhat challenging to find them anywhere.
    I know that this is much to ask, but it'd be very helpful.

    One of my players in 3.5 is running a Paladin, and waited until 6th level to choose a mount- she went Unicorn, as well as picking up Leadership. The Unicorn is a great addition to the paladin's crusade against undead in our campaign. She ends up using the unicorn mount as a flanker (her cohort was a Cleric in her church, so more Turn Undead per day).
    Here are 3 variants from Wizards' website (Demon Apocalypse Unicorn, Monstrous Vampire Unicorn, and Two Headed Dark Unicorn) that were not mentioned in the video.
    archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eo/20061219a
    I also came across a monster in one of the bestiaries that used a unicorn sacrificing its horn to dark powers (by demon/devil worshippers) that created a rage filled corrupted beast- a Spireling? Something like that, but leafing through my books at random, can't find it at the moment. The art was impressive, and I had made a mental note to use it as a possible antagonist against the aforementioned paladin/unicorn duo.
    The palamino, brown, and zebra-corn were from Dragon magazine? Had never seen those before.

    did a higher being create unicorns or is there some kind of unicorn god? Im mostly interested because warlocks can have Unicron patrons So I thought maybe there might be a single particularly powerful Unicorn or some super powerful celestial being who created them.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 лет назад

      Well, according to the current monster manual, these celestial unicorns are essentially horse-angels sent by the gods to patrol enchanted forests (Sylvan glades, not the feywild I guess?) or be assigned to chosen champions.
      This disregards the folklore of unicorns only letting pure maidens ride them, so, these are not Sylvan unicorns, what they are depicting in the 5E MM is the Celestial Charger.

    • @Babidi111
      @Babidi111 6 лет назад

      okay so there is no specifically named top unicorn, it can be basically any unicorn who could be a warlock patron. I mainly wanted to know if there was a named Unicorn at the top of power or a celestial who controlled them so I could create an evil character who through whatever scenario offended the Unicorn or deity in charge of unicorns so much that they forced the character into servitude. That despite the player character being evil the Unicorn cursed him into being compelled toward good and incapable of acting on his natural evil nature. Basically, an evil character forced into the service of a celestial and hates that he has no free will to commit evil acts and is afflicted with a curse that compels him to do good despite his cruel nature. It just seems like a really fun RP character to make.

    I recall a book (or maybe a book series) that I read 30 years ago, but I cannot remember what it was called. The main character was a mercenary knight, a very macho manly-man womanizer, whose mount was a unicorn. Everyone that he met knew that unicorns could only be ridden by virgins, so his lifestyle had everyone wondering how he could take a tavern wench to his room every night and still keep the unicorn. At one point, he clarified that biologically and physically he was still a virgin as far as the mystical bond with the unicorn counted, but that the women sure liked his 'accent.'
