Please do season 3. Season 3 was great because Ricky's character learned a lot from his experiences in 1 & 2 and he changed because of it. Only joking, he goes right back to how he was at the start of season 1.

@vodka pigeon. life on the road was horrendous, wasnt it? You can see everything Stephen and Ricky said about Stephen actually having the qualifications while Ricky was an underachieving, lazy sod when they met was maybe true.
The problem is that Ricky is a prick in real life and actually extremely thin skinned when it comes to criticism but all the stuff he writes tries so hard to tug on your heartstrings and it feels so fake.
You briefly mention the filming location, and something I thought I’d add is: in The Office, the actual office feels real. In Extras, the sets feel like real sets. The village in Afterlife feels dead, like some fake location from a dream. Lazy.
And it’s never anything utter than pleasant sunny weather. Most likely not for artistic reasons Ricky just probably preferred shooting in the summer as it’s easier and he’s too lazy to try anything else
@@ashleyg2610 i thought that recently. Its odd though isn't it. We are in England. Even if he doesn't want to film out of season, I think just putting the sound of rain in the background sometimes would be more effective
That was one of the things that took me out of Cemetery Junction a bit. The area in Reading where the film is gets its name from is noisy, grimy area of low-cost housing. The sort of place that Maggie ends up in the Extra's special. Whereas film Cemetery Junction is much more of an idyllic small town. Growing up in Whitley, i'm not surprised that Ricky want's to avoid the gritty reality and romanticise things in his adult life. But I don't think it helps his story telling.
my problem with the filming location is just how unrealistic a place Tamsworth seemed. It was all leafy suburbs with nice little town squares and a thriving local newspaper. It was all sunny streets and quaint churches with graveyards. Yet had grimy street corners with prostitutes and drug addicts and gangs of thieves roaming around that all would appear when the story needed them and like most of the plot points, would vanish never to be seen again. Just a mish-mash of styles and thoughts into this one unbelievable location
It's worth mentioning in Stephen Merchant's new show The Outlaws in one of the episodes a character says to another character something to the effect of "Don't you remember that fable about the frog and the scorpion?" and it isn't really picked up- the characters just continue talking. I maintain that this was a subtle dig at Ricky. I can't believe how much time is wasted in Afterlife rehashing about this stupid fable. Thank you so much for speeding it up at 9:45
We're all waiting for a season 3 review mate, when and if you get round to it. Season 3 was the worst of the bunch, I have no idea why this show has so many fans
lots of people (probably everyone) have lost friends and loved ones to cancer, so parts of this show will resonate with them. I think that's understandable. I also think that its laid on a bit thick, which for me comes across as more cynical and manipulative than meaningful. I suppose for them it must be the other way around. I agree that season 3 was the worst.
I was thinking a lot seemed repetitive and wondered why. The first series ending really annoyed me it was a cop out. The second series dragged. But I just finished the third series and the show redeemed itself- much better. I don't know what to make of it now overall.
The only reason I can think of is that they haven't followed Ricky Gervais closely over the years. So they don't realise how many of the jokes are recycled and how much Ricky is simply trying to use the show to stroke his own ego.
@@davidw9736, to me it came across as a show about depression, written by someone who has never suffered from depression. For me the emotional aspect also fell flat because the main character is so damn unlikable, even his dead wife in the clips we see of her comes across as unlikable. Hard to sympathise with such an obnoxious couple.
The joke being an old person saying something you wouldn’t expect, which you also show was done in Derek, was also done in Extras. When Maggie meets the parents of her date and they talk about all the contraceptives they use. Just keep on recycling baby...
And also by Catherine Tate and in Still Game and in basically every broad comedy show you've ever seen for the past million years. Fuck me, Ricky really has become Andy Millman in so many ways.
Seriously, what is Gervais doing? First Derek and then Afterlife. Surely he recognises that there's been a severe dip in the quality of his output. The fact that Frankie Boyle can slag off one of your shows on national television and get a round of applause should set alarm bells ringing.
Both this and your review of the first season are spot on. Would be interested in seeing your thoughts on Derek, I'm actually flabbergasted that made it onto television.
I've been a long time Ricky Gervais fan, but have found that I've had to force myself to watch anything post Extras just to see how bad it is (with the exception of Idiot Abroad which is mainly Karl, and brilliant). I watched all 52 minutes of your video because, unlike Ricky, you have clearly put the effort in: your editing is superb, your research is thorough (even plucking clips from Ricky's XFM days to bolster your points), and I love your dry humour. Keep up the good work, I for one would definitely watch more 👍
Saddest thing is that the wonderful Diane Morgan is in it. That and the fact that some of my relatives like it. It's ok, I've moved far away from them.
The really striking thing is that Karl Pilkington of all people managed to create a television dramedy that was much more engaging than Gervais' efforts. Sick of It isn't perfect, but the central concept of the main character interacting with his own internal voice is funnier and a lot more novel than most of Afterlife. Moreover yes the show will certainly will have scenes based around Karl being put off by annoying people; it also very often makes his own idiosyncrasies the butt of the joke, and the program genuinely explores how much of his flawed life is the result of own choices. Even the romantic subtext he has with a younger woman in the second series rarely ever feels over idealized or saccharine in its execution. Not every character in Pilkington's show is necessarily complex mind you, but there's at least a sense that they have lives beyond the show, Afterlife's cast feel like they exist either for him to lecture against, insult, or hear about his late spouse. Its one thing for the story to revolve around him, its quite another for the story's universe seeming to as well. That simplistic characterization makes the its already manipulative attempts at pathos feel even less genuine because nothing at all feels relatable. Finally the lack of anything resembling subtlety in Gervais' current work compounds the aforementioned issues. The constant footage of Lisa eventually has little emotional effect because its use just beats the viewer over the head in its one dimensional depiction of grief. Sick of It doesn't force itself into efforts at tearjerker moments nearly as often, and even then the occasional illustration of Karl's actual loneliness is done with much more restraint via the cinematography (which itself blows away any of the visual work in Afterlife). Essentially in terms of legitimately thoughtful character oriented television shows the one who co-wrote the Office and Extras has been outdone by a man who once did Monkey News. And that's sadder than any fictional dead wife.
First season of sick of it was hit or miss by the episode but was blown away with what Karl did with the second season. The romantic through line was very sweet and heart felt without being overly sentimental and was a very down to earth portrayal of a man finding himself late in life. Could feel the Ken Loach influence
I don't think people necessarily want deep, complex or novel characters in their fiction. I think the important difference between After Life and Sick of It is that the characters in the later seem real. You have to have archetypes because otherwise what's the point in having characters, but it should be subtle. In After Life it seems like every character exists only to interact with the protagonist. Sometimes you can have the interaction with a character be so specifically important to the protagonist that it's ironic and therefore amusing, but you can't write a while story that way. It's just boring.
Even when I watch the Inbetweeners back I feel like I lose some of the rewatch ability because of the swearing but at least it’s realistic because they’re teenagers and that’s how they talk, with this show I can only listen to the c-word so many times before it starts to get stale. I really don’t understand what people see in this show, the characters are pretty much identical in their dialogue and Gervais’ character is just a bore. Great video Hal!
This was absolutely superb. I can’t believe how popular this show is, or how Ricky seems to relish how the masses love it despite how shit it is. He’s completely turned into the type of guy he used to take the piss out of back in the day.
@@Giveitagoog RIP Ricky and Steve because they don't do things together anymore. Obviously Steve had nothing to do with Afterlife, it's absolute dog shit.
This is great. I genuinely believe Ricky just doesn't care anymore, Netflix chucked him a load of money and he knew his name was already made, he had no incentive to make it good. 90% of his audience wouldn't have heard the xfm days or the same lines he's churned out in stand ups over the decades so he just recycled it. I was his biggest fan until a few years ago but everything since he ditched Steve has just been awful
I mean, that seems pretty reasonable. Most people only want people who like them to read their tweets. I'm not saying you should have to be sycophantic about it, but I can't imagine a world where they're actually going to enjoy reading your critique of their personality. There's no way that'd I'd operate my own social media pages if I was remotely famous. It's not so much that they "can't take" the criticism, but it's trivially easy to avoid, why wouldn't they? I would.
The psychiatrist was the funniest person in the whole three series. I think the reason he isn't in the third series is that he was too funny and Gervais didn't want to be the second funniest person on his show.
Please tell me you are going to review Afterlife 3?! Everything you've said is spot on- the names thing really puzzled me. I found myself hate watching this show- like you, I find it completely bizarre that soooo many people like this and completely outrageous that Ricky Gervais can make so much money from plagiarising himself? I truly believe that Stephen Merchant brought all of the subtlety to the writing in previous projects. "Tells you what to think" this! Other issues include- everyone thinks Tony is funny and kind and lovely based on very little. All the video clips show Tony's reaction to his wife, in him annoying her in some way or watching her doing something (I would have punched my partner if he constantly had a camera in my face at every opportunity). Even in her dying moments she makes her upcoming death about him, about how it will affect him and how he should remember how great he is. I would have liked to have seen something real about her, about how she might have felt at the thought of dying. A proper writer would have done this and not made it all about generic plaudits, stuff that you find in sympathy cards.
I am actively seeking out videos like this to calm my sanity levels regarding this terrible show, which for some bizzare reason people love so much. Thank you for making this, I could literally watch for hours! :D Would also love to see your comments on season 3. :)))))
@@erice5847 Just makes me unironically reaffirm the fact that so many people out there are NPCs with an equally 1st grade of secondary-school-esque surface-level perspective on grief and depression in general. This show is so painfully unsubtle and yet is touted as a Scorsese
People love it because despite the fact that it’s incredibly shallow it does - clumsily - tackle some themes that everyone can relate to like loss and depression. It doesn’t do it in a very tactful way but the story of “sad man stops feeling sad while being sarcastic” is cathartic to a lot of people.
The show has an interesting premise but it never actually lives up to it. There aren’t really any actual characters and therefore there’s no character development.
And he actually went on to make another series essentially extending watching a man disappear up his own arsehole into the World record books. Great video
Loved Ricky Gervais' new show Afterlife, cancer is so sad tho!!!!!! But he calls a child a cunt and an old person swear hahahahah bit naughty but you've gotta love it, most emotional and thought-provoking thing I've seen since the John Lewis Christmas Advert
This is a great review. I hope you release more content. Afterlife is such a shame. I really wanted to enjoy this. Even if I enjoyed it slightly less than extras or the office, I would have taken that. Sadly, it is a very poor show and your spot-on analysis articulates the reason as to why that is.
The editing of these vids was excellent. I don't have a problem per se with repeated joke's, my issue is it's just literally over and over throughout his career, rather than the odd time. Either way, of all these 3 vids I've agreed with 99.9% the 0.1% was not finding the Psychiatrist scenes funny. He was probably my favourite bit (only in S2) Love the work you've put in ❤️
THANK YOU for pointing out that the fable of the scorpion and the frog does not work at all, in what world is Tony the frog? It’s absolutely maddening, it’s literally the opposite of what’s going on
Another superb review. I don't agree with all of your points this time round but they were largely spot on. To me, the characters laughing at Tony's jokes comes across as natural and akin to real life conversation. Also, the laptop screen editing is borne out of necessity. Filming a screen results in a flicker effect due to framerate difference. That said all your points were well researched and evidenced. Oh and I really like your voice. It's so soft and relaxing.
34:13 you're correct, you can't film a tv screen without getting visual artifacts. It's possible to carefully sync up the frame rate of the camera to the frame rate of the screen but it's complicated to do and difficult to do well. If you don't you'll see rapid flickering and vertical scrolling because the camera will capture frames inbetween the frames rendering on the screen. Both if these things happen dozens of times a second, but if they're slightly out of sync the effect us very noticeable. It's much, much easier to transpose the tv part into the actual film frame by frame. As for the video quality, I guess that Ricky's character paid somebody to upscale and stabilise the original footage. I think it would have made those scenes feel a lot more genuine if they'd been shot without camera rigs at least. You could shoot it on handheld cameras and decrease the quality as needed in editing. A lot of film makers would prefer not to shoot on low quality cameras because it's a lot easier to add blur and distortion than it is to take it out
the brilliant self-awareness of the David Brent character really is long gone in Gervais now he's become mega successful. He's latest stand-up is so arrogant with all his former cheekiness completely removed , and just copying his previous routines . Afterlife was unbearable - i couldnt get past s2e1 . Great review
I will never understand why Ricky chose to reintroduce THE EXACT SAME CHARACTER of “Kev” from Derek, in this programme. Seriously? What is up with that?
8:14 Karl Pilkington also mentions it on Season 2 Episode 13 of The Ricky Gervais Show, alluding to Ricky worrying about things that don't matter like people chewing too loudly
Just finished the whole video. Really enjoyed it, primarily because I never bothered watching series 2 of Afterlife coz I knew it would be shit. So watching this I now feel like I’ve seen it, and also confirmation that it’s as terrible as I presumed it to be. Enjoyed your style and your voice too. A video I would love to see you do is comparing Andy Millman to Gervais, as Gervais really did become Millman circa series 2 of extras. Gervais quite famously shunned social media in the mid 00s, only posting to his official website. The reason for this is coz he was off the back of The Office and Extras and was lauded by critics, so he didn’t give a fuck about ‘the man on the street’. Then as time went by and each of his shows and films got worse, he started to sign up to Twitter, then Facebook, then instagram. And not only was he active on there, but it seemed like he spent his life checking comments. Everyone who said how they loved Life’s too short or Derek and now Afterlife, Ricky would almost certainly give their comment a like. Likewise if someone said something negative, he’d block them. So the man who only cared about what critics thought now became desperate to hear positive comments from braindead fans as they were the only positive reviews he was getting. And it’s like Millman towards the end of Extras. He’s not happy with When the whistle blows even though it’s popular, because it’s liked by ‘idiots who like catch phrases’. But when he starts to lose his fame for that, he becomes desperate to remain popular and thus goes on big brother. Also the quote in Extra of ‘fame is a mask that eats into the face’ has never been truer.
Ricky has been banging on about being annoyed at people in restaurants making noises he doesn't like for 20 years, it's become the crutch of his whole shtick at this point.
My first impressions of Ricky were from The Office and Extras and all the xfm shows and stuff, which made me like him and think he is original and then fast forward to now and ive sort of grown to dislike him now hes become a human recycler
Thanks for this review. It really does need to be illustrated how absolutely terrible this show is. The characters are wooden and one dimensional. Read one comment slagging you off and saying you’ve got no sense of humour. Maybe I don’t have a sense of humour either then, because I can’t even begin to see where the humour is in this show. Very lazy stuff.
It’s all about perspective my friend. I haven’t finished your video yet as I write this but in the way you describe some of the scenes, you can honestly do that for many films and shows that are good or bad. For example, describing what Tony does, by removing the fundamental context to why he said this, why he did that… it does end up coming across as bad, boring, etc.
Brilliant review, well done. You’re quite right, it’s not an attack on the person - the work being done just has huge problems for many of us. Bizarrely, many more seem to lap it up….
Steve merchant was behind everything good he was involved in, he should leave comedy and become a philosopher, thinks he’s smarter than he is, XFM was peak comedy though 👌
Glad I found this video as i've struggled for a while with how bad this series has been and even the mediocre reviews don't capture the poor, poor effort that Ricky Gervais has put in on this occasion. He defintely needs someone else to write with. A poorly executed vanity project if ever there was one.
Great review(s) - looking forward to the S3 review. Would you mind sharing how you managed to obtain so much footage, as Netflix blocks screen recorders. If you screen-recorded it somehow I would love to know! Thanks
The crux of the joke from that extras clip + the one from Afterlife of the camp men correcting someone's performance has always bugged me, even when I still watched afterlife as a kind of comfort show while I was going through my own grieving process. Because Ricky, you're supposed to be in the industry, you of all people should know that details matter. Maybe that's why your performances have become so samey, and if they're not (in the case of Derek) they're completely one dimensional and unbelievable. The difference between 'cust-uhd' and 'cust-ahrd' DOES matter, albeit if I were the director in the situation I wouldn't harp on it too much but I would emphasise the first time round why it's important. Is the character singing this American? Does changing the vowel clarify the sound? The fact Ricky makes fun of the technical side of the artform he is supposed to be part of is so telling. He thinks making telly is just a way to sit around with your mates and say rehearsed lines about real things you think, as if anyone should give a shit without your concerted effort to entertain/otherwise engage them intellectually. Sidenote, the director in the second clip deserves some derision because he isn't giving the kid actual direction, only telling him to do it again and again. But the joke isn't that he's a bad director, it's implied (and confirmed by how many times Ricky has done this exact joke in different variations) that all directors are like this and the very art of direction is something inherently silly and trivial, as if the actors should just form a mutiny and do their own thing.
This show is so paper thin and weak, the reaction to it and its IMDb rating is one of the great mysteries of the ages. How can people think this is good? It is objectively very bad. I just noticed in this at 29:08, Ricky looks straight at the camera, though that's the least of this shows problems, it is embarrassingly bad.
Watching your review has allowed me to enjoy this show on the same level that I enjoyed 'The Room'. They are so similarly bad that Afterlife has become quite amusing to watch as a spectacle.
1:28 - yes, it is mentioned again and is one of the most important scenes in Afterlife; 1:49 - yes it is mentioned again, also an important part in the first season.
Please upload the Shitcom edit as a separate video! It's great! I've seen it cut out and posted elsewhere online anyway so you may as well get the views for yourself!
There are many, many criticisms to be made of this show. It so desperately needed a competent collaborator. You've done a really good job of summarising all of the many flaws. I often think the success and genius of The Office (and to a lesser extent Extras) seemingly gave Gervais a licence to make anything he wanted for the rest of his career. So would you accept a world that Afterlife didn't exist if it meant The Office didn't either?
Cant say im really a fan of rickys new stuff including the stand up... alot of weird "anti-sjw" anti-trans jokes and stuff that just come off as hateful tbh
Its not 'hate' to point out, in a comedic way, that women are being erased by men who think they're women. Our language, our terminology, our vital sex-segregated spaces, our sports, our rights; they're being eroded day by day to appease the feelings of men. Its not 'hate' to point out that thats absurd at best, hugely damaging to women and girls at worst.
I laughed more in the first 15 minutes of this than I did watching the entire first series (I couldn't endure more), which might not say much but yeah - it's cathartic hearing someone with a brain review this mess of a show
i think the reason after life is so highly rated in the UK is because (and a testament to the fact that) most people in the UK are depressed and one thing this show does a good job at is showing how depression feels
Nah its not a good representation of depression. And most of the people on twitter seem to be from his new Merican fans from his Golden globes speech and his anti lgbt and anti pc stuff.
Gervais is razor-sharp and hilarious but he’s used the same wheelhouse for every show and it worked twice. Now it’s tired and sloppy. He’s become the comic that won’t update his act despite knowing we’ve all seen it repeatedly.
Im only a few episodes into the first season and couldnt help but look for a review like yours. Glad i did because i dont have to waste more time giving it a chance thinking it'll improve. Season 2 looks just like season 1. The rave reviews ive seen elsewhere confused me too. The way Ricky explores death and grief is about as in-depth as a secondary school 1st years essay. The edgelord view at life doesnt even bother me so much in its nihilism but more so in its delivery and that its coming out of a fully grown mans mouth. Its embarassing, im not even particularly religious but the way he makes a strawman out of the female coworker to input his halfbaked take on religion and faith is just...Also i thought the first episode already hammered home the fact that yes lisa is dead but it never stops? He cant just let us be aware of it through symbolic means he says to everyone, all the time. The humour isn't so bad at times thats why i decided to give it a chance but thats not enough to hold this show up. If a show like this is not actually for people like me and mor so to comfort those who've lost someone then great, but i struggle to understand how thats possible.
Summed it up perfectly. Just perfectly. Especially the humor part - not funny, but entertaining enough. It honest just feels like watching a washed up Gervais have an ego trip and take people down his edgelord shower arguments. Been like this since day 1 tbh, how many times will he cycle the same gag about hating people who make noise when eating?
@@yahyawasim1994 I guess when you live in the Hollywood bubble you run out of ideas because youre so disconnected from reality. I can't blame him for cashing in while he can but i just don't get how so many people lap it up.
Ordinarily that would be a groan worthy cliche. but given the fact that Ricky makes such a deal of not believing in ghosts it might actually have served the story to have him be proven wrong on something. Maybe. Inserting ghosts into an otherwise realistic show is a bit iffy in terms of believability though.

lots of people (probably everyone) have lost friends and loved ones to cancer, so parts of this show will resonate with them.
Thank you for restoring my dwindling faith in humanity.
Oh he's done you again, Rick!
Play a record!!
'He's done yer and he's not even here'
The joke being an old person saying something you wouldn’t expect, which you also show was done in Derek, was also done in Extras. When Maggie meets the parents of her date and they talk about all the contraceptives they use. Just keep on recycling baby...
Spot on! don't know how I didn't pick up on that one
noooobody wants that babyyyyy
And also by Catherine Tate and in Still Game and in basically every broad comedy show you've ever seen for the past million years.
Fuck me, Ricky really has become Andy Millman in so many ways.
Darren Lamb yawning at Afterlife is funnier than anything seen in Afterlife
Funnier than anything Ricky has done since he sacked off Steve
Have you looked in the mirror lately?
Seriously, what is Gervais doing? First Derek and then Afterlife. Surely he recognises that there's been a severe dip in the quality of his output. The fact that Frankie Boyle can slag off one of your shows on national television and get a round of applause should set alarm bells ringing.
Both this and your review of the first season are spot on. Would be interested in seeing your thoughts on Derek, I'm actually flabbergasted that made it onto television.
Second this. Thought Derek was pretty awful as well.
It is mind boggling that Derek was even made, let alone broadcast.
37:00 is genus! That had me in stitches. So well done mate. Afterlife is utter tosh and it seems to be only enjoyed by the recently bereaved.
I cracked up when that started. I miss Darren Lamb!
We're getting 3 seasons of this shit but only got 2 seasons of Extras?
I've been a long time Ricky Gervais fan, but have found that I've had to force myself to watch anything post Extras just to see how bad it is (with the exception of Idiot Abroad which is mainly Karl, and brilliant). I watched all 52 minutes of your video because, unlike Ricky, you have clearly put the effort in: your editing is superb, your research is thorough (even plucking clips from Ricky's XFM days to bolster your points), and I love your dry humour. Keep up the good work, I for one would definitely watch more 👍
This is way better than the series itself.
Saddest thing is that the wonderful Diane Morgan is in it. That and the fact that some of my relatives like it. It's ok, I've moved far away from them.
Not just DM, but, Tom Basden, Joe Wilkinson & David Earl to a lesser extent
Fantastic summary!
Completely agree
First season of sick of it was hit or miss by the episode but was blown away with what Karl did with the second season. The romantic through line was very sweet and heart felt without being overly sentimental and was a very down to earth portrayal of a man finding himself late in life. Could feel the Ken Loach influence
Karl was always smarter than Ricky. The mind is not the brain. Karl knows that.
You have nutshelled it.
Just swinging by to see if you’ve uploaded a season 3 review yet… would love to see it
are you avin' a laugh? is he avin' a laugh?
TACKY SHIT!
Show’s shit mate!
This is far far far more interesting than the actual TV series. Superbly done. RIP Ricky and Steve.
Even Karl sold out.
Steve wasn’t involved
@@chriswakefield9538 How did Karl sell out? He did one show based upon his thoughts
@@Giveitagoog RIP Ricky and Steve because they don't do things together anymore. Obviously Steve had nothing to do with Afterlife, it's absolute dog shit.
@@copyrightcharacter1166 Karl definitely hasn't sold out.
He blocked me on Twitter because I said Frankie Boyle was funnier than him
Tbf Frankie Boyle blocked me when I said he was a hypocrite, so they’re all at it. (I agree that FB is now funnier than Ricky though)
Same haha I can't believe so many people like it it's so painfully unsubtle
@@erice5847 Just makes me unironically reaffirm the fact that so many people out there are NPCs with an equally 1st grade of secondary-school-esque surface-level perspective on grief and depression in general. This show is so painfully unsubtle and yet is touted as a Scorsese
People love it because despite the fact that it’s incredibly shallow it does - clumsily - tackle some themes that everyone can relate to like loss and depression. It doesn’t do it in a very tactful way but the story of “sad man stops feeling sad while being sarcastic” is cathartic to a lot of people.
Old people swearing or talking about sex belongs to the kind of comedy that relies on catchphrases, funny glasses, and wigs.
Need your taake on season 3 HAL
It was awful. Utterly, embarrassingly awful.
The show has an interesting premise but it never actually lives up to it. There aren’t really any actual characters and therefore there’s no character development.
Gervais ego is hysterical, behaves like an a hole to everyone but the woman all around him can see what a wonderful man he is
Fuck me took forever to find it again among a sea of "After Life is so emotional and funny". Had to go through old subreddit posts
Hi again, will you be doing a video for series 3?
He was probably my favourite bit (only in S2)
Love the work you've put in ❤️
THANK YOU for pointing out that the fable of the scorpion and the frog does not work at all, in what world is Tony the frog? It’s absolutely maddening, it’s literally the opposite of what’s going on
Please do series 3 mate. Great stuff
“It’ll be interesting to see where this goes”
Literally nowhere. You have to do another one mate. AL3 was so much worse.
A lot of film makers would prefer not to shoot on low quality cameras because it's a lot easier to add blur and distortion than it is to take it out
Maybe Bench woman is a ghost, now that would be a twist.
the brilliant self-awareness of the David Brent character really is long gone in Gervais now he's become mega successful.
Such a brilliant character as well
8:14 Karl Pilkington also mentions it on Season 2 Episode 13 of The Ricky Gervais Show, alluding to Ricky worrying about things that don't matter like people chewing too loudly
Where’s the review for series 3? We NEED it
Just finished the whole video.
Also the quote in Extra of ‘fame is a mask that eats into the face’ has never been truer.
ricky gervais sans stephen meerchant... recycling of anecdotes he made on talk shows / the golden globes / the office / extras / his standups
"Then you have the janitor.."
I say toob...
Ricky has been banging on about being annoyed at people in restaurants making noises he doesn't like for 20 years, it's become the crutch of his whole shtick at this point.
The thing about tony is that he's literally not a character.
He's just Rickey , with a different name.
Ew
@@DerekDerekDerekDerekDerekDerek You’re a very strange individual

Ouch. I assume he tweeted that before After Life was made?
Brilliant review, well done. You’re quite right, it’s not an attack on the person - the work being done just has huge problems for many of us. Bizarrely, many more seem to lap it up….
Smerch was brilliant in Extras
I think you should do videos for Derek and Life On The Road.
Steve merchant was behind everything good he was involved in, he should leave comedy and become a philosopher, thinks he’s smarter than he is, XFM was peak comedy though 👌
37:05 ish, god, how ironic is it, watching that, that When the Whistle Blows is genuinely better than After Life
Glad I found this video as i've struggled for a while with how bad this series has been and even the mediocre reviews don't capture the poor, poor effort that Ricky Gervais has put in on this occasion. He defintely needs someone else to write with. A poorly executed vanity project if ever there was one.
What did he spend the big budget on???? It’s not obvious anywhere. If I was told After Life was made on a shoestring I’d believe it
Tony is SO unlikeable.
I'm curious as to what you think of Stephen Merchant's 'Outlaws'
The only thing I disagree with is the people laughing at tonys jokes. That bit is quite realistic as people do that in real life
This show is so paper thin and weak, the reaction to it and its IMDb rating is one of the great mysteries of the ages. How can people think this is good? It is objectively very bad.
I just noticed in this at 29:08, Ricky looks straight at the camera, though that's the least of this shows problems, it is embarrassingly bad.
Because cancer is sad 😢💰💰💰
He threatens a kid with a hammer and "it's never mentioned again"? It certainly is mentioned again.
It's a shitcom.
Are you havin a laugh!?
Ohhhhh, he's done you again Rick!
Watching your review has allowed me to enjoy this show on the same level that I enjoyed 'The Room'. They are so similarly bad that Afterlife has become quite amusing to watch as a spectacle.
Pleeeeaaaseee can you do an AF series 3 review?!?!?!?
1:28 - yes, it is mentioned again and is one of the most important scenes in Afterlife; 1:49 - yes it is mentioned again, also an important part in the first season.
Please upload the Shitcom edit as a separate video! It's great! I've seen it cut out and posted elsewhere online anyway so you may as well get the views for yourself!
Love Gervais. Hate this show
This was really great, cathartic. It would be so good if you were to review season 3 as well. In my view season 3 is the worst of the lot.
Please do season 3 it’s just as bad if not worse 😂
There are many, many criticisms to be made of this show. It so desperately needed a competent collaborator.
You've done a really good job of summarising all of the many flaws.
I often think the success and genius of The Office (and to a lesser extent Extras) seemingly gave Gervais a licence to make anything he wanted for the rest of his career. So would you accept a world that Afterlife didn't exist if it meant The Office didn't either?
There are a few jokes which are nice...and thats about it.
Is she Anne because of Ever Decreasing Circles?
And getting it on with “Paul” from EDC ??
"Yes random man that walked in off the street, I WILL revert the decision I made to shut down this company!"

I laughed more in the first 15 minutes of this than I did watching the entire first series (I couldn't endure more), which might not say much but yeah - it's cathartic hearing someone with a brain review this mess of a show
put the sad music on this scene - the show.
i think the reason after life is so highly rated in the UK is because (and a testament to the fact that) most people in the UK are depressed and one thing this show does a good job at is showing how depression feels
Nah its not a good representation of depression. And most of the people on twitter seem to be from his new Merican fans from his Golden globes speech and his anti lgbt and anti pc stuff.
I hate how every character seems to be on the verge of tears. They're like upset toddlers 🥺
The show would have some depth if it turned out that woman on the bench was a ghost
I think it was Frankie Boyle who said "I don't watch After Life and think it's shit, I think how funny Stephen Merchant is".
I actually don’t mind afterlife anymore seeing as it resulted in these fantastic videos lol
You are so right!!!
The psychiatrist doesn't play Kev in Derek. Those are two different actors
