I love the way that Andy, who is so knowledgeable about so many forms of music and who, in his mid-50s, can still pull obscure names out of his memory banks, is invariably flummoxed by the order of a 10 to 1 countdown.
Easy to decide "greatest." I'll quote one famous musician, who said, "There were the Beatles, and there was everyone else." One of the record company suits said of Abbey Road, "There has to be the band's name on the cover," and the Beatles said, "Everyone knows what we look like." They were absolutely right.
Just on the first bit re technical ability - if you add in vocals the Beatles would have to come out on top - they are basically a great vocal group who were also musicians - unbeatable background vocals, harmony, lead vocals. Most bands are composed of musicians who sing - the Beatles are the inverse (and I suspect that is a key element in their legacy).
Could you count use of studio as technical ability? And if George Martin was the fifth Beatle...I think that would have to shoot the Beatles higher. Maybe?
I agree, technical ability is about more than just playing long solos. All 4 members of that group were multi-instrumentalists of varying degrees, had an uncannily strong grasp of melody and harmony. I see a lot made on various forums about how the beatles didn't know music theory, which is kinda crap when you dissect many of their songs. knowing how to name an E7b9 is not nearly as important of a skill as knowing where it will fit in a song or arrangement, and if you dig through their outtakes and see how they played with drastically different arrangements of certain songs, that's gotta count for some sort of technical ability, probably more important than a big long exposition solo. Not to mention that imo harrison's guitar work on Abbey Road rivals the likes of Beck, Clapton and Page in many places.

Has to be the Beatles and by a country mile too! There are numerous bands I much prefer over them but they simply wrote more good and great songs than any other band. Most variety, most popular, most influential.
McCartney is a genius melodist, the GOAT, but consider this : which version of With a Little Help From My Friends is better, and by what amount ? - Beatles' version ? - Joe Cocker's one, arranged/re-written by Jimmy Page ? @hervemurgale8098 I don't know which world you live in, but millions of people still listen to the Beatles and learn their songs. I watched A Hard Day's Night on Amazon Prime recently, and it was great. It's still popular after sixty years. There are people making a living on RUclips analysing Beatles songs. There is a channel called Virgin Rock where a classical musician is working her way through every song the Beatles recorded. There are many thousands, probably millions, of reaction videos featuring Beatles songs. There are lots of musicians, especially guitarists, giving lessons on how to play Beatles songs. Thousands of artists have covered Beatles songs for sixty years and are continuing to do so. Yesterday alone has been covered 2200 times.
@@hervemurgale8098 Seriously ? ... no-one can sing Zeppelin songs because the range is too high. Those songs are going to die out . Beatles songs will last forever and ever ....
@@hervemurgale8098 What’s your source for Cocker’s version of “With a Little Help from my Friends” being “arranged/rewritten” by Jimmy Page? He didn’t get an arranger credit, and I can’t find anything online that suggests Page was anything more than a session musician on it. He certainly wasn’t the producer (that was Denny Cordell with help from Tony Visconti)
Not on the list or ever talked about on here (understandably as their music was not what this channel is about or to Andy's taste, but I rate Abba very highly. ABBA Gold selling 30+ million and still in the charts. 2 movies and now the ground breaking Abba Voyage show in London. Not even the Beatles have had their music transfer so successfully to three different formats so long after they finished.
I think it's been previously established that ABBA didn't sell enough albums in America to qualify for this list, otherwise I think they would deserve to be on there.

I think it's interesting that most bands on the list featured four members, a couple had five but The Beatles I think brought this kind of four archetypal characters into the image of a tight-knit band. This had a major influence on those who formed bands thereafter.

The problem with the criteria for rating is the Beatles really have to be set apart from any list as their own once in a world, lighting in a bottle phenomenon. (Aside from that, I suspect the “super-i-o meter” is a tad biased toward Zeppelin.) Fun times again on your channel.
not taking away from their talent at all, but the beatles were greatly aided by their place in the rock and roll timeline. Not a lot had been explored in a serious artistic way yet, and new technology was coming out on a near weekly basis it seemed in the mid 60s, so they had the opportunity to be the 'first' in a lot of things, if not the first to actually do it, the first to be seen/heard utilizing many of these new techniques and technologies really aided their legacy. Of course, that is notwithstanding the great creative spirit and songwriting ability they had as well, but there was a serious jolt in the arm to said creativity with all the opportunities to pioneer the new toys available at the time.
@@kyleh1127 so, basically, the Beatles really weren't that great, and the only reason we honor them is because they were lucky in the fact that no one did what they did before them. I asked my supercomputer. It ignored musical considerations and sales. Instead it went for physical mass per band member. The winner was The Fat Boys. This seems fair and scientific.
Re: lyrics, I agree that Waters' lyrics are great and that PF deserves the top spot... but the real genius lyricist is undoubtedly Barrett. Even Waters, the egomaniac, acknowledges it today. And it has a huuuge influence in many bands, including Blur etc.
Barret? He was barely around after the first couple of years. What are some good examples of his lyrics? Not saying you're wrong, but kinda surprised about Barrett.
Andy, your Super-i-Ometer is spot on and I’m very grateful to it - whatever “it” is. You have no idea how it has put my mind, spirit and wallet (as thin as it is) to rest now that I know I have NOT completely wasted twenty years of my life playing the music of Led Zeppelin. For they are very great. In fact, the greatest! Long live the Super-I-Ometer!
Led Zeppelin’s arrangements are always interesting to listen to. They never seem to repeat themselves. They sneak in mandolins when no one is watching or strings or a slide guitar. I think you’re right to list the Beatles as the greatest song writers. When I was trying to learn how to write songs, I looked at Beatle songs. Their songs are always interesting with bridges and middle eights to break things up and most of the time they’re doing it under three minutes. This was a very entertaining video. Thanks. 🙏
Again, a pretty sensible list. Here is my list, based on which bands/artists have influenced me the most as a songwriter and guitarist: 1. Genesis 2. Pink Floyd 3. Peter Gabriel 4. Yes 5. The Beatles 6. King Crimson 7. Led Zeppelin 8. Soundgarden 9. Jeff Buckley 10. Radiohead

St. Winnifred's School Choir - progressive rock mixed with jazz fusion as witnessed in their classic track....'There's no one Quite Like Grandma'. The pinnacle of 20th century music!
That song marked the end for many groups, ELP realised that they were no longer at the races, and stayed at the Beach full of love, Jimmy Page just gave up, and Genesis, with Phil at the helm, realised that his group had to change to keep up, and they became a singles group, one of the few that was inspired and not beat up by the Stockport Posse, and Roger Waters, after trying a hit single from The Wall over a decade since Arnold Layne, cobbled together The Final Cut, drew the curtains, and turned out the light as they left the building. What is good and what people like are separate things. A sophisticated listener can appreciate the difference and be aware that their "taste" is not a gauge of talent. And talent isn't necessarily appealing to everyone in the same way. Having said that, The Beatles are objectively the greatest band of all time. Zeppelin were great, but... more influential and had better songs than the Beatles? That's patently absurd.
The 2 comments seem to be somewhat biased. Personally I love both Zep and Beatles. Both did some awesome songs. I would happily have gone for a draw, even though Beatles are most influential. But if I was being biased I'd have Zeppelin top anyway. Remember this is bands, based on top 10 GOAT. No Sabbath, Elvis, MJ, ABBA, Garth Brooks, etc and no Rappers (lol). I think a list that has U2 and Aerosmith and doesn't have the Who and The Kinks is quite suspect. AC/DC have made a career out of rewriting the same song over and over for decades. It's a good song, but still. For the record, The Beatles are objectively and subjectively the greatest band and the greatest musical and cultural phenomenon of all time. End of story.
Awesome youtube for content and entertainment, 10 out of 10!! As it was objective, perhaps a recount without the last criteria "Andy's Choice"? all in all a great video, SUPER=I=OMETER was pretty much spot on? I think the only glaring injustice was iconic & Metalica and Aerosmith in front of U2? I'm not really a big U2 fan however anyone in the street will recognise Bono, same cant be said for anyone from Metalica or Aerosmith. Bono also had an audience with the Pope and US President, and had a Southpark episode done on him to-boot. Keep up the great work Andy, including all the bloopers, very entertaining :)
@TheRealYTIAN oh it was but exactly it put them back on map think their sales went up considerably kinda like Aerosmith walk this way dmc thing. Then they get the movie which push sales even further. i agree, led zeppelin were just doing what the who and deep purple were already doing. I seriously dont understand what they did so big in the rock world, other than be successful. The who are far more influential
For rock guitar itself it's Hendrix hands down. Like him or hate him he is what kicked off the evolution of modern rock guitar. Also what most people overlook is that he is way more important for rhythm guitar than he is for lead. His double stops and chord inversions were one of a kind. Whenever you have someone you can name as reference point like the Beatles and say that music wasn't the same afterwards you know they are objectively good.
Deep Purple is the greatest rock band in history that stayed extremely popular during their prime with many member changes within seven years 1968-75 and Ritchie Blackmore left and .Tommy Bolin took over and still it did not dent their popularity ....
Concurred. Unfortunately Purple suffers from the Red-Headed Step-Child Hidden Away in the Attic Syndrome. Far too often ignored or neglected by rock journalists, and the music industry / media machine at large.

We can thank rock journalists, poor marketing, the record labels, the alleged taste-makers and trend setters, et al for that.
Uh oh, Methinks The SUPER=I=OMETER had a malfunction... Beatles at #2>? No way! That being said, great job and lot of work, Glad I was able to get back to watch this video! TY!
I also thought they would make the top 5, but as it seems they didn't sell enough worldwide. They are huge in the Americas but quite unknown (compared to other bands) in the rest of the world. But if they would have been in these top 10 they would have been in the top 3 for lyrics, musicality, and live shows.
An entertaining video, but of course we all know the correct answer. Btw, Led Zeppelin's last years were also a breakup project and there was no Page-Plant collaboration on the In Through the Out Door album (drugs are not the cause but the effect).
The last couple of times I've seen the Sisters live, they were truly awful. The sound quality was dire and it was difficult to make out which song they were singing until they got to the chorus. The audience booed them at the end.
Of course I appreciate you had to narrow the field to some degree and album sales is the best criteria, but I still feel like there are a number of bands who would have outscored more than a few on this list. The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Police, Kraftwerk, Rush, The Sex Pistols and The Ramones all come to mind.
I would really recommend to add chapters to that video so one can compare and find the parts of each band and how they perform according to your scoring system.
The true measure lies in whether the artist advanced the art form and resonated with a broader audience. This perspective emphasizes the importance of innovation and impact in art, an artist's contribution should be assessed by their ability to push boundaries and influence a wide audience. Art is often seen as a dynamic field where innovation and breaking new ground are highly valued. When an artist introduces new techniques, ideas, or forms that significantly influence the art world, they contribute to the evolution of the art form. This can be seen in the work of pioneers like Pablo Picasso with Cubism or Jackson Pollock with Abstract Expressionism. Not all groundbreaking art is immediately appreciated by the majority. Some art forms may initially challenge viewers, but over time, they can gain broader acceptance as society's tastes and perspectives evolve. Thus, the relationship between innovation and audience reception can be complex and sometimes takes years to fully appreciate. The value of an artist's work can also depend on how it fits within the historical and cultural context of its time. Artists who capture the spirit of their era or challenge prevailing norms can have a lasting impact, even if their work wasn't fully appreciated during their lifetime. While personal taste is subjective, art that resonates with a large audience often reflects shared cultural values, emotions, or experiences, making it more universally impactful. Other than sales and your ‘personal taste’ - The Pistols should be in the top 3.
I'm not sure how anyone but the Beatles can be crowned the "greatest band of all time," but the fact that here Led Zeppelin is proclaimed to have the title doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm just wondering about the Who...
@misterschubert3242 yeah, that's the band most obviously missing from the list. Biggest sales don't qualify for greatness anyway. Sales have nothing to do with quality. Look at U2.
We used to use this matrix method to assess candidates for jobs: have a number of categories, assess each applicant numerically in each category and then add up to get a result. Invariably the highest total did not produce the 'best' candidate. Same here. But great fun and interesting as always.
I spent last Wednesday evening at the Jazz Sabbath performance in Brisbane Australia and what Adam Wakeman brought out in those songs was their essential jazziness, good metal is jazz with rock instruments. For something completely different you could go for Portal from Brisbane who are a couple of jazz school grads and two other strange fellows creating the dirtiest sludgiest extreme metal walls of sound which owe more to Ornette Coleman than Tony Iommi. Meanwhile I consider The Stranglers with either Hugh or Bazz on guitar/vocals as the most entertaining live band I've ever seen and they also had the song writing sorted, especially with the late great Dave Greenfield being the backbone of the band, they also had a string of consistently good albums apart from Stranglers MkII, but they still had a few good songs. On the other hand, Chic and Gail's Return to Forever show back in '78 or '79 was an experience I have treasured and Jethro Tull in '77 is another. Then again, when we saw Morrissey at the Sydney Opera House in '15 we were spellbound and seduced by one of the great voices in popular music (think Sinatra, Bennett, Torme). This rating of bands has gone far enough and is a reflection of the dominance of hauntology in our currently decaying Western Civilization... take the only tree that's left and stuff it up the hole in your culture.
They sold tons of records in the Eastern Block during the time when they were active which were never counted on the sales totals. ABBA were paid in Oil by countries like the Soviet Union. They certainly sold a lot more than Queen during the seventies too.
Yes. The list of 'biggest selling artists' is very RIAA weighted. They were huge in territories that many of the others didn't match like South and Central America, behind the Iron Curtain and Australia. Poland spent its entire yearly budget for 'Western' imports on ABBA albums. The Russian rouble was an unwanted currency so ABBA were paid in commodities like oil. These things are not factored in their true worldwide sales figures.

ABBA Gold selling 30+ million and still in the charts. 2 movies and now the ground breaking Abba Voyage show in London.
Not even the Beatles have had their music transfer so successfully to three different formats so long after they finished.

I think it's interesting that most bands on the list featured four members, a couple had five but The Beatles I think brought this kind of four archetypal characters into the image of a tight-knit band. This had a major influence on those who formed bands thereafter.

Oh, what a surprise! How could anyone have guessed that this is the result you would come up with?

There are some great people in that band. But the other members lowered the mass. This is the science and maths of a supercomputer.

Re: lyrics, I agree that Waters' lyrics are great and that PF deserves the top spot... but the real genius lyricist is undoubtedly Barrett. Even Waters, the egomaniac, acknowledges it today. And it has a huuuge influence in many bands, including Blur etc.

Thanks. 🙏

The words of some Led Zep songs make me want to puke.

I have not watched the video yet, but if the answer is not the Beatles, you are wrong.
ABBA has sold more albums than Metallica or Aerosmith:) Between 170 and 300 million.
