    Hey I'm back, I watched this vid in the morning and I'm just coming back from the test drive. 25 years of gunk will really make an engine seem weaker! Truck runs smoother and is more responsive. Thanks for making this video!

    Man I think this is my exact issue; somebody linked to your video from a forum and your explanation was incredible, THANK YOU!
    I was initially chasing down what I thought was a bad / leaking injector, and found that the port on my throttle body was completely plugged like you described. I'm gonna go through the whole EGR system like you mentioned and I bet that will solve it. Appreciate it!

    • @TheRandomMechanic
      @TheRandomMechanic  Год назад

      If i may ask , what exactly was the truck doing , now that you said you were thinking a leaking injector im curious cause i did solve another issue with these 90s model tacomas but i havent had a chance to make an in depth video of it yet

    • @joelchristopher190
      @joelchristopher190 Год назад +1

      Yeah the main issue for me was on startup after the truck had sat overnight it would have a rough idle for 10-20 seconds. It would then seem to “burn off” like one cylinder was the problem, and then it would smooth out and run totally normal. It would blow a little gray smoke on startup while it did this.
      Never did it on normal or warm startup, only if it had sat 12+ hours. But when looking into it I found that my throttle body was full of gunk like you mentioned.
      I just got the EGR vacuum part and am going to see if that helps.

    How do you even clean out the Egr valve on this model? I'm looking at it on my Tacoma and in pics of the part online and I don't see any of the typical Egr openings where you'd even see carbon buildup or whether the valve is sticking or working etc? No visible moving stem from what I can tell.
    Great video. Just got the 401 code but my truck idles fairly smooth. I sprayed gumout into the intake today while revving it. Actually seems like it lowered my idle just a notch and it's running. A bit smoother, less knocking & few more horsepower. Threw in a can of sea foam and some 91 gas. Cleared the code and drove 40 miles at speed. I feel like the modulator is prob the first thing I'll try if/when the light comes back on. Get a cheap one on Amazon. I checked the filter inside and it was pretty gross. Could not remove it how you did...it was brittle and tight... and as I pinched it just peeled off the top shreds so I left it alone.

    Just throwing you some love for the good vid. I have an 02 lancer and can't find anything more like mine. My Modulator and solenoid are separate. My Modulator has 2 hoses that come from intake side. I can blow in one easy and the other has resistance. Off one of the 2 hoses , there is a T which goes to electronic solenoid that controls egr. I'm not exactly sure how the Modulator is suppose to function. Seems like I shouldn't be able to blow into one side, but even then the solenoid would be shut when needed. So this Modulator technically doesn't need to shut completely , I'm assuming that it shuts during throttle forcing the vacuum through solenoid to egr . My egr flutters and seems like it should open and close better and I feel like egr probably isn't opening very much but I'm no expert at all. Just hoping this is the little culprit.

    I have a 2001 with the 2.4 would I be able to just replace the EGR and drive the truck right after or does it require some kind of vacuum. A shop told me they had to vacuum some lines after I replace the egr but they wouldn’t tell me exactly what had to be vacuum so kind of skeptical.

    • @TheRandomMechanic
      @TheRandomMechanic  Год назад

      It depends on if the egr valve is actually bad , they rarely fail , but if somehow it has failed cances are the egr passageways are blocked up with carbon and they will need to clean them out , does your vehicle have the vacuum modulator thats mounted over the egr valve like on mine should be a disk looking object with 3 small vacuum lines plugged into it

    • @TheRandomMechanic
      @TheRandomMechanic  Год назад

      I ask because if that isnt working , and if its the original id bet you money it isnt then thats why your egr valve wasnt working

    Hi !
    How do clean the VSV up !?

    • @TheRandomMechanic
      @TheRandomMechanic  4 года назад +1

      Once you remove the vsv you can use a 9v battery and a couple pieces of wire to activate the valve once open you can spray carburetor cleaner through it , although it might aleviate the issue for a short amount of time i highly recommend replacing the vsv all together , the chances are if the vehicle has over 100k on it the valve inside the vsv is most likely scarred and worn down or the field winding that opens the valve has become weak over time ,
