This was one of the most useful videos out there . I practiced this drill , and my scores did improve . The term " Wood on.Wood " is very true .This term means head on stock for those that never heard it before .

    * Once you've figured out where the butt stock should be positioned on your shoulder, try doing this gun mounting with your eyes closed. Once the gun is mounted open your eyes, if you're not squarely looking down the rib your gun stock needs to be adjusted, or you will have to learn how to adjusted yourself to your gun each time you bring it to your shoulder. You don't need a mirror if you want to improve your score, correcting an Ill fitting stock is the best solution. Remember, although one doesn't aim a shotgun, the front sight and the rear sight ( which is your eye ) must be centered over the bore or rib, if it's a SxS. In other words, your line of sight must be perfectly parallel with the bore of your gun, no cross eyed looks across the rib are acceptable. A well centered mid rib bead is an advantage in determining if your eye is properly centered, your stock is properly fitted, and your mounting your shotgun properly. Once all that has been accomplished, relax and just concentrate on your target, and your follow through.

As an instructor, I recommend the shut your eyes exercise, helps with muscle memory also.

Sorry to be a spoiler but your gun does not fit you. You are scrunching your shoulder up and lowing your head to the gun to make it fit. in order to have the proper form your head should be erect and your shoulders relaxed before and during the mount.. If you start with your shoulders relaxed and your head erect, you can then bring your gun up to your check and slide it back into your shoulder. You will then likely find that the butt pad ends up higher than your shoulder. As long as the gun is in the pocket of your shoulder this is how the gun should fit you for consistancey. It is likey that you could get a better fit if you raise the adjustable comb on your demo gun. You may also mention the extreamly important fact of ending up the mount with the eye (rt eye for right handed & left for lefties) looking down the center of the guns rib and seeing at least a figure with the guns beads. Form dectates fit and proper form improves consistancey. RCD, Master Instructor

I'm fairly novice to sporting and this really helps. I adjusted my targeting last weekend to one that actually is very similar to this technique so adding this is not that difficult but I am noticing that these new stances and mounting works a different set of back muscles that I need to get used to! Thanks!

There's a fine line between proper mount and fit. If the gun is punching you in the cheek, it doesn't fit even though you mout seems proper. Dry firing won't tell you this. This is a good starting practice. Do live fire and if you get punched adjust accordingly. Mighty fine shooters appear to have a off proper mount, but smoke 25/25 without getting bitch slaped on the cheek.

Sounds good to me, new shooter here, I found once that is normalized, the line of the gun that I feel through my hands coincides with that,, you gain confidence and with maintaining calm, you just point the gun n shoot, leed happens naturally

I am American and I appreciate this channel the more I watch. It's very interesting to me what styles of firearms are popular around the world. I just discovered Longthorne shotguns and I am smitten by the 3004 Valhalla. That's a work of art.
Question: In your oppinion, is it tradition or the limits on ammo in the UK that makes over-unders and side by sides so popular? If I could only have 2+1 then I believe an over/under would suffice just fine and forget the 3rd shell.
    Keep up the good work!

For older shooters there’s still a bit of stigma with pump actions and semi-autos, but that attitude is dying off.
For younger shooters, it is more due to restrictions. To own pump or semi-auto which holds more than 2+1 you need a firearm license, which you need to jump through a lot more hoops to get - most notably you need to prove why you need it. For a shotgun license this restriction isn’t there. Only real advantage a 2+1 semi-auto has over an over and under is if you prefer a lighter gun.

Hi David. Excellent advice as usual. I shoot quite well and have picked up lots of tips on how and when etc. What would be a bit of a pointer for me and maybe other people is what is the sight plane on the rib. Some ribs are higher than others etc. I shoot looking down the rib but only seeing the front bead. Is this a good way of shooting? It obviously works for me but should the sight plane be flat? And another question. How do really high rib guns work as they make no sense to me if the rib is some 2-3 inches above the barrel. Cheers. Clive

    Hi,i' ve got a question.
Can you do a test report of the Beretta 687 Silver Pigeon III Sporting?
Is the weapon also suitable for trap shooting?
Or a comparison with another shotgun, for example the Browning B725 Sporter.
    Many greetings from Stefan .

New shooters often mount the gun by lifting the stock with the right hand versus a one piece mount pushing the gun forward and up. Your video does not mention this. Why?
