I really think the characters you aren't currently playing should follow you around so it feels more like you're traveling with a party and not like you're shape shifting into different forms
If you can get your 3D world to aesthetically match your 2D characters more, I think you'll have a hit on your hands from the aesthetic appeal alone. Good luck!
I'm not rlly an RPG guy but this whole concept and visual style & character designs have me intrigued. I do think the cat looks a bit out of place though compared to the other characters, because he has less detail. I think giving him grey pupils would do a lot (also meaning he's blind which imo is cool for a stealth character). Maybe some dark grey stripes could help too f.e. (or some grey in the ears). Really like his ability tho and how uniquely it's represented for a stealth character. Keep up the good work! Keeping an eye on this!
Love, love, love the artwork and animations. One tiny thing you could do is to add a blink for each character in their idle animation. It usually helps making the characters feel a little more alive and it is only requires 1 extra frame. Anyway looking forward to seeing more progress!! :D
This game looks great already, I can see the potential of it as a cozy party RPG for sure! Can't wait to see more of what you have planned for it. I definitely agree with what another commenter said about the world - even if it's in 3D it should match the style of your 2D characters more so that the visuals feel more cohesive. Also, I would really recommend making a Steam store page for the game already so that people can start wishlisting it (I definitely want to ;) )
The game is looking promising so far. I like the character designs and the quick character change mechanics too! The best part about making a new game after recently making one is being able to reutilize previous code or assets. It really helps in getting the ball rolling. I can't wait to see more of this game in future!
I love a good 2.5D art style and I'm even planning on making one for a game i might make (the art style inspired by fpe, paper mario, and little big planet) and I love your characters designs each one shows a different personality and are visually distinct from one another
@3gnomesgames909 I've been watching videos on character design lately for the game on currently working on (not the 2.5D one that's probably going to be my second or third game) so I've picked up an eye for that recently
The 2D art is flawless, absolutely 100/100! However, the 3D art feels inconsistent and looks a bit cheap in comparison. I’d recommend either improving the 3D assets or transitioning fully to 2D, which I believe would be the better option overall.
if you have plans to do lots of platforming in your game it might be a good idea to add a shadow that would be directly below the character like mario64
You might want to take a look at "Team Innocent: The Point of No Return". It's a 3D game made for a 2D console, and you are playing a 2D character, exploring a 3D world. Most impressively, the characters actually look like they're facing the "3D direction" they're moving in. But it does have fixed camera angles (likely what inspired Resident Evil), so it might not be as applicable
Love the characters, so full of life! Random tip, if you use custom normals on the characters to point upwards, it will remove the self-shadowing of the characters when you face away from the sun/light source. If it's intentional then don't mind the comment, but it's something I found useful in my own 2.5D projects and thought I'd share. They will still respond to light and get shadowed by other things, but it makes it feel a bit more blended rather than a strict 2D object in a 3D world.
I appreciate that! I actually tried it both ways and ended up preferring it being effected by the shadows. I thought it just sort of made them feel more natural in the world
This looks adorable! The cat is definitely my favourite character. Also kind of curious if you've every made a PNG- or V- tuber? Cuz they way you cut your characters into parts and then animated them is giving me somewhere between a complex PNGtuber and simplistic Vtuber. Just missing eyes and mouth movement.
@@3gnomesgames909 Based off the tutorials I've watched for PNGtuber+, I feel like it could maybe be neat tool to pick up at one point. It's free on steam.
This is awesome, can't wait for next devlog I have a question, what's the difference between playmaker and unity's offical visual scripting? and which of them is the best?
I've never used Unity's visual coding personally, but I really appreciated how much supplemental stuff you could find online to help you learn Playmaker
I'm sure it's still simply very much pre-alpha stuff, but the characters were the legs are less visible work best for walking animation you got going. The taller character with the red orb staff, not so much.
I really like what I see so far! 2.5d is always great. But, one problem I noticed, is that Liana looks almost ai generated...? I don't think she really was, as you drew all the other characters, but she feels quite off. I think it's because she's missing an eye shine, and she's more detailed than the others. I guess they all have different art styles but she's quite distracting. I almost _didn't click_ as I assumed she was Ai! (I do feel very guilty for telling an actual artist that, especially since I am one too.😔Sorry, sorry!! I just thought you needed to know bc that misconception could really hurt your game. >.
Thank you! And I understand the concern! The concept behind their different designs was that they were each characters created by the players controlling them and they all have slightly different art styles!

I agree, or at least add some type of transition effect to it.
"Not my first rodeo... it's my second." Classic lolololol

Agreed the characters are why I clicked on this video, if the trees and such matches this would look sick.

Ooo, this reminds me of how cozy groove did their art! I haven't seen this style much it looks really cool.
Oh, thank you so much 🤍
Excited for a new devlog series from you!
I like the bouncy-jiggly-whatever that thing is animation when they walk
Really awesome stuff!! Excited to see more!
Thank you!!
I think my favorite characters so far would be the cat and the lizard wizard lol.

I feel like the character designs could really benefit from having them turn around and have backsides sort of like in the paper Mario games
Great character designs! Good luck with your project!
