    OMG, really? You made this video so clear, even when you encountered issues! Definitely subbed! The garage was going to charge me a small fortune to change this. During this time when even groceries are barely affordable, this video is something the world needs about now. Thank you for this thank you

      Thank you for the very kind words. People can't afford to take their cards to the shop anymore. Even the simplest repairs cost upwards of $1000 these days.

    Thanks for making this video. I changed ours today 2016 town/country. Probably an hour for the work and at least an hour cleaning up the mess/putting away tools etc. Went with OEM Mopar thermostat assembly. I used several of your tips, removing the air box etc. I used this job as an excuse to buy a pair of the hose clamp pliers and the hose pinch off pliers! Drove the car 2 or 3 miles. Started the engine several times and the permanent code cleared itself!

      I always tell people if you need a special tool for a job, in most cases cheaper to buy it than paying a shop. The best part is you keep the tool.

    Why not drain some from the rad to lower the coolant level to hopefully bellow the thermostat housing first?

    I just replaced the housing and thermostat on my wife's 2012 T&C. I just removed the hoses, cover, and PS reservoir to the air box and had enough room. To remove the hose from the thermostat housing I used a 45 degree pick. Very little coolant came out when I pulled off the hose as I drained the radiator. I had the car on ramps so the car was on a bit if an angle and I was able to get a bucket under the drain plug. I used a clean bucket and reused the coolant. I was able to get most of it back into the radiator, the last little bit I poured into the overflow reservoir. I really like your fill funnel and need to get one of those. Good video. Happy Motoring.

      AutoZone, cool, that's where I got the thermostat and housing. You also made getting the hose clamp off look very easy, I don't have 90 degree pliers and will have to get a pair. S friend loan me one of those pliers with a cable attached to it and that wouldn't work on my clamp, I used channel locks on it, worked for me. Thanks for the info, enjoy the Lord's day and have a good one.

      FYI, when the thermostat is suspected of being faulty, the check engine light should have popped up and given a code P0128, indicating the thermostat needs replacing.
      After clamp is moved, if hose is sealed, a thin screw driver or proper tool is slipped between hose lip and plastic, DW-40 sprayed in there and carefully wiggle tool so as to separate the seal, once loose, then twist hose some but do not remove. Now remove the two 10mm boltsand carefully pry thermostat housing out, bring it upward w/ hose. Clean mating surface. Remove old thermostat, insert new one in same position as old. Attach thermostat, insert bolts, snug fit them in, then tighten. Now bring clamp back into same spot it was. Put everything back. Also rinse belt and pullys with hot water or spray brake cleaner to remove the antifreeze contamination, otherwise a squeal will start.

    Is it necessary to remove the hose from the housing when only planning on changing the thermostat.

    • @richardspaulding5035
      @richardspaulding5035  Год назад +1

      Yes, I think the best way is to buy the thermostat and housing as a unit. Even if you decide to buy the thermostat separately it comes with a special installation tool, it would be much easier to install it in the housing on the bench. But do yourself a huge favor and buy the thermostat preinstalled in a housing.

    Thanks.

    • @richardspaulding5035
      @richardspaulding5035  Год назад

      Manufacture specs are for new bolts going into new parts on the initial assembly. With older bolts having some corrosion, I will tighten them by feel. Naturally on a suspension part or a cylinder head I will torque to specs. You may notice when you purchase a suspension component often times it comes with new bolts for this reason. When I would replace a cylinder head, I would always chase the treads to insure I get accurate readings when torquing them down.

    The amount of coolant that comes out when you pop off the thermostat hose tells you nothing about how much coolant is in the system, unless it's none, in which case you would know for other reasons. Tips:
    -unbolt the thermostat and swing everything up on top for better access before trying to remove the hose and when attaching the new one.
    - I'd lube the gasket with coolant
    - bolt torque spec is 12nm
    - double check the coolant you're adding is compatible with what's in there, otherwise change.

    What if no coolant comes out from the valve?

    • @richardspaulding5035
      @richardspaulding5035  11 месяцев назад

      Not being there to see what you did and how you did it makes it difficult to say. Try opening the bleeder valve and leave it open as you fill the radiator. At first air should come out followed by coolant. Being that the radiator fill is much higher than the bleeder valve by the laws of gravity coolant should start to come out at some point. When the radiator is full close the bleeder and start the motor to get the thermostat opened. Keep adding coolant as needed while you parodically open the bleeder valve. Dont replace the radiator cap until the thermostat opens, the radiator is full and no more air comes out of the bleeder valve.

    • @richardspaulding5035
      @richardspaulding5035  2 года назад

      It depends on how empty it is. In this instance I never drained the radiator. I pulled the hose and whatever came out was what I replaced. I am sure there was coolant remaining below the level of the hose I removed. I don't know what the capacity of the full coolant system is. If you are doing this job I would have two gallons of 50 50 mix on hand. Thanks for the question.

    You actually DON'T show the changing of the thermostat. After watching it twice, around the 10:30 mark, I see what I'm guessing is the thermostat barely sticking out of the new housing. Except for missing out on the actual installation of the thermostat, good video.

    • @richardspaulding5035
      @richardspaulding5035  Год назад +1

      That is because the housing comes with the thermostat pre-installed. It is the easiest and best way to buy it. I had originally planned to show how to install it as the owner of the car purchased just the thermostat. However, I happened to break the original housing trying to pull off the hose so I returned the one she purchased and got the one that comes with the housing. It will be a lot easier for you if you buy it that way as I don't think it is too much more money.

    Van calls for OAT coolant. Replacing radiators, water pumps, and heater cores is expensive and time-consuming. I'd run the coolant that plays most friendly with the metals used in your coolant loop. If you have time for online shipping, get the Mopar brand concentrate OAT coolant. You'll save big money over the Prestone purple premix you'll be forced to use if you grab it last minute from Advance. Concentrate is around the same price, but you get twice as much because distilled water is nearly free.

    Draining about a gallon of coolant from the radiator from the draincock resulted in ZERO mess when I pulled the hose from the t-stat on my 2015 T&C. I was getting plenty of heat in the fall, but the P0128 code kept popping up. My OBD-II reader indicated the temperature never exceeded 170 degrees. I was able to twist the hose off the housing with just my hands, and the housing did not break in the process. You risked damaging the hose using the pliers.
    That hose seemed really loose when you put the clamp back on. I'd be surprised if you didn't have a leak after getting the engine hot.

    • @richardspaulding5035
      @richardspaulding5035  2 года назад +4

      Thanks for sharing, my hose was pretty stuck, no way was it coming off with a simple twist of the hand. You may not be aware of this, but NOT every situation (especially in auto repair) is exactly the same. The car you were working on is several years newer. Naturally things would tend to come off easier. Furthermore, I am 70 years old, perhaps I am not as strong as you and not as experienced as you. I only opened my first shop in the 1970s.

    If you spray a little blaster release on that hose connected to the house, and let it set a minute; it will release that grip the hose as on that housing. although, it was obvious that the housing had to go. I learned something with that trick with the buggy cord.

    From experience dealing with Dodge Grand Caravan‘s it’s best to buy the Mopar namebrand replacement thermostat. Every time I bought an aftermarket it would cause it to run hot that crazy and then finally I was told by someone that the Mopar brand is the way to go because they can’t quite get the aftermarket ones figured out perfectly with some of these people.

      @@richardspaulding5035 I actually installed my new Mopar thermostat today because I was having that problem with the aftermarket one and it fixed all my problems that I was having out of the one I purchased from AutoZone. I use my van for work for my mobile locksmith business and I let it run most of the day because I worked all day long and it never even got all the way to halfway on the temperature gauge and the air felt like it blew colder and it just felt like it ran better all around so I think it was a good choice to go with the Mopar one, I’m happy with it.

Why not just take the hose with the housing attached to it. Move the hose with the housing intact. Then replace the thermostat and seal or gasket. And then put everything back together???? I guess I must have missed something??? Any information or suggestions please feel free to leave a comment.

      @@johnstandsbyear2167 It was my intention to show how to install the new thermostat into the old housing. The thermostat comes with a special cylindrical installation tool. However, as you saw in the video, I clumsily broke the old housing trying to get it separated from the hose. Anyway, I don't recommend buying it like that. It is much easier buying the thermostat pre-installed in a new housing as it is only a very few dollars more. It was the owner of the car that purchased the thermostat separately. Once the old housing was indeed broken, it was an easy decision to return the thermostat she had purchased and get a new housing with the stat pre-installed. Thanks John. Looks like I talk too much even in my replies. LOL

    Not sure what your nieces relationship status has to do with replacing a thermostat. Kinda creepy that it was mentioned. Also, why didnt you just crack open the air bledd valve on the thermostat housing and open the radiator cap and allow the coolant to drain in a controlled manor rather then disconnecting the hose and make a complete mess? Not sure how long you were a mechanic but this was amateur hour. A mechanic would have checked the radiator cap first to see if that was a reason for coolant loss, not just assume it was a thermostat. A new thermostat is not going to solve missing coolant.
