- Behind the façade of a well maintained Cheshire two-bedroom apartment lives 59-year-old Ray Byrne, an out-of-control collector who is literally trapped by his own possessions. Ray has managed to collect everything over the years, from old clothes to retro gadgets and broken electrical equipment. But with not much space to keep it all, his hoard has taken over nearly every corner of his home. His living room, bathroom, balcony and bedroom are largely inaccessible because of the amount of junk, and he has been forced to sleep in a cramped corner on the living room floor.

The more episodes I watch, the more I get the feeling that the designer was an unemployed niece of the producer who wanted to do his nagging aunt a favor.
Dont like any of her stuff
giving serious 90s Changing Rooms vibes
😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
It's really dated 😅 the show
The final insult is that they sell the person's possessions to pay for it.
Oh my goodness. "The speakers have been a bone of contention between me and Ray"....
Listen to the man! He has a passion for electronics. Give him his 1970s room with large speakers, vinyl deck and place to display his records! Ask him him favourite bands and get some related artwork. Choose a colour scheme to fit that decade. A lovely armchair to listen to them in. Display some of the phones, with their array of colours, on a wall-mounted display, and some of the cameras similarly in another room - as beautiful collections!
They stripped this man of all his personality and gave him bland magazine-style rooms, including garish wallpaper. :( That room is so so oppressing.
yeah £2000 Pounds of wallpaper 💀
I love this idea of displaying the funky colored phones. Why blank walls when they would have been so fun and interesting
Love your ideas.
This show is the worst of the worst. They do everything per their time - 2003? and it is aging badly. Way to go, Team Narcissist.
I was actually thinking that a wall covered with his speakers, with either the phone or the camera collection slotted in the gaps, would have looked amazing. He already had the feature wall in his possession, but now it's all gone.
What was the point in the designer lady asking the man what he wanted the rooms to look like? She just went with her own ideas. I'd rather keep the money and re style the rooms myself.
She always totally ignores her clents tastes and desires!
I think far too much being spent on wallpaper. Just make a nice clear and tidy flat and have a few holidays 🙂
FIRE THE DESIGNER. Stop using such dark colours, especially on the ceiling, it is misrable. It will make anyone depressed after a while.
Like a cave......terribly sad
They need to sack the designer. This poor guy sold his possessions to pay for poor taste!
Looks like she buys throw away stuff from thrift stores
@Maisy Chan...But who would want all that stuff in a flat or anywhere (his old possessions).
The decorator doesn't listen to ANY of Ray's desires but only goes with her own.
"I actually like it the way it is, I've got a bit of a feminine side"
"Do you? That's fantastic! So how about a gentleman's club theme?"
@@sydneyyoung7352 exactly - she didn't listen.
@@sydneyyoung7352 Gentleman's club is a far cry from the brief Ray gave her! What a shame 🙁
I suspect the design is planned before the home visit in order to have the materials ordered and ready to go. Plus I looked up Abigail Ahern, the designer, and she's well known for a particular aesthetic. She has a huge e-commerce store and has books sold internationally. Someone hiring her would want her style, they probably wouldn't hire her for a bright, airy, beach-y feel for example. An odd choice for this series, but maybe her name is a boost for the show.
She never does! And always does dark colours
So she decided to turn his home into a depressed chocolate bar. Well done.
I bet the buyers are accomplices with the show to scam people. They work out each person’s share of the sell.
The 'professionals' turned out to be arrogant and patronising. Don't let this obnoxious duo into your home, please.
I wouldn't let this "designer" near my dwelling. It's dark and depressing and she does what SHE wants to do, not what the client wants. She takes spaces that are already small and makes them look even smaller with dark walls, etc. Claustrophobic 🤢
Ok me too! I didn’t like it at all. All the depressing black n dark colors. It should have been bright and fresh with emphasis on natural light.
The "paneled wall" in the living room looks like a garage door.
I thought it was just me. 🫣😳😵
It looks different and sophisticated, although a pale ceiling might have been better.
I agree. Her designing style is old fashioned and not appealing at all.
Selling to a resale shop isn’t going to get the value on the cameras. But the fact they want $$ quickly to “give” to the designer is a hinderance. She’s over priced to say the least.
This show is a scam absolute scam. They want to make it seem that they used his money for him, when they actually pocket a large sum of it. I bet the buyers are accomplices with the show to scam people. They work out each person’s share of the sell.
I was surprised when the narrator said the wallpaper isn't cheap, because that's 100% how it looks. I hope Ray held back at least some good equipment he can use or display and didn't sell it all for that gloomy re-do.
I noticed that too. This show is a scam absolute scam. They want to make it seem that they used his money for him, when they actually pocket a large sum of it. I bet the buyers are accomplices with the show to scam people. They work out each person’s share of the sell.
That designer should consider changing careers.
Quick question: some of these people having gorgeous things. Why not use some of their prized possessions displayed instead of having a designer changing their homes?
This designer completely strips homes of the owners personality and puts HER personality in it. It's dank, dark and depressing with no personality
The decorator MUST be kicked out of this project. Her level of expertise is below zero!
Totally agree!!!😵💫😵💫😵💫
I bet the buyers are accomplices with the show to scam people. They work out each person’s share of the sell.
Definitely!
I watched a few of her re-decoration, and they kinda look the same. At least one dark wall, and some things that appear old fashioned but aren't. I doubt that everyone on the show has the same taste.
Give them a places they adore because then there won't be any inclination to fill them with stuff? How can she be on this show and be so confidently, utterly incorrect about how hoarding disorder works?
Because her miraculous and brilliant taste cures all mental issues. She's a hideous designer and far too in love with herself
Looks horrible, how can she even be called an expert? They robed that poor man and left him with cheap sticker on The Wall, looked cheap, dark and cold. What a massiv disapointement after all of his sacrifices and his progress! Please change those expert dont put them on The next episode. I dont want to see them rob any other person please.
I feel so sorry for these people the pay good money from selling their valuable items to the designer and she completely ruins their home not listening to their taste so they hate it and probably have to spend more re doing it!
Those black walls are dark and depressing. The red is an angry colour... As always this designer has done what SHE Wants... She is a terrible person!
I absolutely despise this designer's "work" UGH!
I agree! My ultimate nightmare is Abby ringing up saying she is going to come and redecorate my house!!
she looked as bad as her work too ;)
The designer is awful 😵
Trueeeee😵💫😵💫😵💫
I can’t believe they got rid of the speakers they treated him tm like a child
The design is .... The wallpaper imitating leather and wood and other stuff actually looks cheap. Gentleman's style looks good on if it actually is expencive. And dark walls are not for small apartments, cause it narrows the space.
I wouldn’t let her near my place either. Have been watching other episodes that this designer has done and they are all hideous.
She's creating New York gentlemen's clubs all over the world.
Red sofas, black walls, blue garden furniture! Uggghhh
The front room looks so dark and depressing.
The room was so gloomy
Poor Ray. He liked the original wallpaper in his bedroom and told her so.
A minute later we see her choosing the wallpaper that she wants and talking about the pressure of getting enough money to do what she wants by selling his possessions.
Anything would be better than the hoard of items collected yet she did not listen to him.
An incredible opportunity to change his life, I'm sure he is grateful for such immense help.
I wonder how he truly feels, if he is comfortable in his place now with that interior design.
gosh, that designer is shockingly terrible.
This is the way to do it. See it all together. Just because it is worth something doesn't mean people will get it sold. Her giving him a lavender and red room is odd. Looks like she bought some thrift stuff.
Oh no no those two again. Abigail does not listen.
It's so unreal to me how most of these people can even afford to buy all this stuff!
I know. How can they afford to constantly spend and spend?
I'd really love to know at least what these people do for work lol, and how long it took for them to accumulate everything
A lot of these people make a living finding unique items and reselling them to collectors at a large markup. The others are in a business and are just adding items to their inventory as an investment.
Oh trust me over a space of 30 odd years it's mind boggling what you can hoard by spending a tenner a week in a Charity shop and carboots.Ive dealt with houses like the ones in this series.
Well Off Parents (who were helped by their Well Off Parents...and Will cash/antiques left to them from Aunts, etc.
- young in the late 60's/70's Boomers...and don't forget 'Money marries Money' 😒
👉👉👉 the only thing i dont like in this documentaries is they have the worse interior designer 🥴😬🤭
She’s not THE worst.
I’ve certainly seen worse. 🤓
She often wants the hoarder to just accept her ideas- but refuses to hear theirs. This episode is the first time I’ve seen her ask and listen to someone.
And who are you to judge?? SMH
What is the show called?
Just wondering if such a dark wall covering is uplifting enough after basically the same mood created by the hoard. If it were me I might end up thinking ‘I have to get out of here…and go….shopping.’
I'm not wild about her designs either. She really should work closely with the person of what they desire.
The woman who did the interior design has been an expert on a BBC show with Alan Carr an interior design show with experts picking over up and coming interior designers rooms. This poor guys rooms were horrendous..in fact shocking. I know this show is a fair few years old..but the red bed cover needed to be binned.
Dark depressing colours
exactly! very depressing room now 🙄 worst interior designer
All those strong patterns & lines give me a headache, poor man! The flat looks so small now. I hope he & his friend redecorated after the crew left!
@@AmyWhoLovesFlowers ugh what a waste of money
I guess having been a hoarder and been contained in a cramp space, the pint should be light and airy. To have only one focal wall is good but not too much dark as it will make them so depress again. Please listen to them (designer). This is not your place, it’s their own life to live. In short give them the much needed clean, airy and cool to the eyes.
The ugliest wall paper i’ve seen since... leaving my rental that had the same as she put in the bed room. Ray said he liked the old one. Vintage. Keep it and design around it if you’re a real designer.
I hate the design. The woman did not listen to anything Ray said about the 70's and only did what she wanted.
My grandmother god rest her soul she was the same way she had the bed across in front of the door you go across the bed an one trail from there to the kitchen an one trail to the bathroom the rest was from the floor to the ceiling when she passed it took us two months to clean her house out to be sold 90 percent of the items was brand new still in the package never opened she just had to have it but she was born in 1935 got married at 14 years old never had nothing she had 13 kids an when she could buy something she did but god knows i miss an love her very much still
That's a young age to be married, and to have so many children to care for had to have been stressful. I never had children and am 34, and stressed a lot as it is, with only 1 boy bird left under my care.
He will start hoarding again straight away, to hide that ridiculous living room!
Designers wallpaper in the bedroom and painted ceiling are abhorrent.
Very outdated
Honestly this end result is hideous. Like it’s such poor taste, anyone could look at what this man had the actual things like the cameras, old tech the music collections etc is the man’s taste so to sell everything and not use that as a designing point for the man’s home is beyond a joke. What the heck poor dude has to pretend to like something that has absolutely nothing of his possession or likes within it. The living room would have been nice to have a wall featuring all those cameras and then maybe the rest of the walls being cream or white to balance the dark wall with a display, or something. The room could have had record collections on a featured wall with old newspapers and tracks or something. I dunno but certainly not this bad bad old outdated hideous design. Should have sat down with him and looked at everything he had that was collected over the years that was actual collectibles and used that with him to come up with a proper design to his likes.
I’d see him even having old news papers with old fashioned things in it phones etc with his phones as a feature wall possibly or the cameras as said even just having the phones at one side and then the cameras or so. It’s just this design the ending is not this man at all.
Newsflash it's a very very old program.
He raised $2000. so she can implement her hideous design ideas!!
Paneled printed wall paper???
He Will probably go back to hoarding just to hide what the "designer" did ..🤣 the colours or patterns she picks are always too dark for the tiny rooms she decorates and she doesn' t care what the people prefer or desire
The designer is blind.
In general I like British tv shows about hoarders, but Gosh, this one is horrible. They don't listen to the person, the designer does what she wants without paying attention to the personality of the person living in the house.
She turned a small flAt into a even smaller space, dark and depressing. Poor ray she did him dirty on this 😮
I think the designer’s intention was okay, but the walls in the bedroom were too much! I hope he & his female friend got together to redecorate. Maybe they got together for real? I hope so 💛
mmm...think she's the wrong gender.
@@sicooper4230 I got that feeling strongly too.
I hope the hoarders get proper professional support for their mental health condition. Simply flogging off/binning their stuff and redecorating won't cure their problems in the long-term.
Did he say he wanted a gentlemans club? No. Eta her own house seems to have antique furniture given the chalk paint treatment 😄😄😄😄
That designer had a hoarding problem in her own house!
This Interieur Designer loves yellow + she always knows how to make a space look small as possible.
Every other old timer hoarder in the are bought all his stuff to take it back to their own hoard.
I agree, it's a chronic problem, and cleaning it all up does NOT help over the long term because the psychological problems causing this pattern have not been addressed. Even if there is "aftercare", most do not attend to it. I have personally known two hoarders, and have come to realize they use the hoard to barricade people out and to lock themselves in. Like any addiction, the person MUST want the help, not just need it. Though it isn't usually emphasized, most of these people have already had massive cleanups by family or friends, or health authorities, and the hoard has "grown back" because the person is still psychologically ill. These Cinderella endings never convince me.
@@ferociousgumby yes, I agree. It’s a much bigger problem that a lot of people don’t understand. Nobody is magically “ Fixed” after the show. As you said it’s like an addiction. How many people go to rehab/treatment only to come out and relapse. 99% of them. It’s part of the process. Hopefully some of these people will go on to live healthier lives.
Haha, I love this comment ~ but it’s not necessarily so! I pick-up vintage pieces now & then. I love using them! Not everyone who shops the unique has an h-word problem 🌼
Awful designer.
I like the bedroom, but not the living room. It's too dark. And I don't see why she couldn't have incorporated the larger speakers that Ray loved. It's his home, after all! Oh well, perhaps he has them stashed somewhere ready to bring back in. 😆😆
The bit at the end says a friend is storing the remainder of Ray's stuff. I get the sinking feeling it'll end right back in his apartment, though I hope not.
This designer's taste is awful and she is very disrespectful of her clients wants and tastes!! I wouldnt let her NEAR my house!!!
Power deal, or what? Morse code box.....30, no 31$ Lol! A dollar more. Between my childrens old toys and my retro toy (interest) hoarde, and other retro stuff......I had other collections. I started getting rid of, it was like dominos. Realizing city apartments flooring, counters ect do not match and between wanting to never have any authorities taking my children, I got rid of a lot! Once you let a certain catagory go, everything else follows! It is freeing! It is true also that collections lose their thrill after awhile! Now, if I see something, I look at it, admire it, then leave! Sometime I play a trick by pushing it back, hiding it saying I will come back. I always end up forgetting about it! I could have been a huge hoarder if I had my own house and no children! Boy, I am glad My mind set is corrected! Before children, and even when I was young, I was naturally a minimalist. Even now I am. I just went through a stage! Hey, it was called Marriage with a man who was abusive! Now, divorced ect.....Trauma does make one hoard! I talk too much, out of excitement that I have a community I can relate to! Where I live, my circle have no interest in this subject.
Couldn't continue to watch this pair ignoring Ray's personal choices for their show agenda.
Ok I came back to see 🙈🙉
Oh heck no that woman that wallpaper, no .
I wonder what her home looks like?
I would have added a larger sofa to give more space for people. More chairs at the dinning table. The balcony spa e good have been used better. A cushioned sitting area which can open up for storage too. Something cozier outside
Money constraints I would think
Dark and dismal, they could have cheered the place up. Looks like a krays meeting place
🤣
The bedroom is ok but the rest is horrific
I kind of feel bad because he’s never slept in the bed for a while or even went out in the balcony for a while but he does have a lot of stuff that is pretty cool
Wouldn't an interior designer normally have some pictures or a sketch of what they have in mind? I have no idea what I think of "gentlemen club" as a concept - show me some visuals!
Man Depression is real & separation anxiety is real it doesn't always have to be separation from another person, it can also be separation from materialistic items
Wait,,thought this guys FULL flat was FULL of stuff?! BUT they’ve sold it ALL and done up 2 rooms!! What abt his kitchen, bathroom and hallway rooms?? Are they just left with no new decor? Painting or sprucing up!? How’s that fair on the guy,who “just wants to live a normal life” 😳😳
that decor gave me nightmares, ew
It looks cheap
I say why not just paint, give him a few new pieces of furniture and let him keep his bloody money for letting him share his life with us. (Good grief. I said "bloody money' and I live in the States!!!)
Agreed. And as an Australian, I thoroughly appreciate hearing your American "bloody money", sounds so novel to me in that accent 😊
The result of the living room is equally depressing as before the makeover, but in a different way. I didn't think that was possible.
I would have kept a few of the retro phones. I have two and the ringer is loud enough to wake the dead - LOL.
19:59 Rays signature I love my hoard face
That wallpaper is going to make the hoarding worse!! I'd want to cover those walls to get away from them!
He's got Canons and Prakticas, he's a man of great taste.
Only half way through but I would have gone way over to the 70's era. Doing something funky with the phones and cameras. Since he doesn't want to use them, then put them in the design! I think he'd rather have a disco ball than a gentlemen's room! Ugh, I hope at some point she either listens to him or he takes over the design when she leaves, along with his lady friend to add the feminine touches (quite literally I hope!).
what do they do with all the stuff that didnt sell???? Im assuming charity shops and the dump????
Hi Claire how're you doing
Put it all back in his house once the cameras left hahaha 😆
What a god Awful bedroom where did she get any of her design credentials from? Good grief the 1940s called.
She used to work for the magazine "Cave living "
The tin food cans for vases though 😑
To the designer i will give you an idea that looks awesome but is cheap buy rolles of brown hand paper towels an clear coat or varnish tear the paper into different sizes an put a coat on the wall stick the paper to the wall in all kinds of shapes an designs then spray the outside when dried up it looks awesome try a small piece of plywood look at it an see what you think before you do a whole room but i think it looks dam good
My bathroom was done that way and looked amazing. I always got compliments.
Why is this show ruined by the so-called "designer"? She's destroying these people's own living spaces and not doing it their way. She's designing spaces for OTHER people, not herself. It's like she's inserting herself into everything, while the people who have to go live in the spaces are stuck with her even after she's gone. The show is a wonderful concept, but the designer should be doing it all their way, whether it looks good or not. The show should be more psychologically-focused on getting people to escape from their hoarding, not on trying to get them to make a huge growth spurt psychologically and also having to go live in a space they don't like. What kind of nonsense with this useless woman...
He likes vintage things. I would do Midcentury modern. Gentleman’s office, mad men type glam.
oh woweee!, a brilliant video!, thank you 😃
I love the nature look on some those sample rooms
I am before the redesign and what already (and again) rubs me the wrong way is: tge designer asks Ray what he enjoys, he tells her and she presses her ideas over his and does something else entirely.
She coukd have gone with a cosy technical 70s style for his living room and he wanted something for his feminine side in his bedroom, which she totally ignored. 😒 That is terrible
The positive side is the hoard is gone and he has somewhere he can sleep in a proper bed. But ...Where is the wardrobe in the bedroom? We all need something to store clothes. Even for a minimalist. The colours in the living room dark. The curtains not hemmed 😱
Removal Men... where do I get some?
I hope he's very happy now. Living room.a bit dark but I think he appreciates it. I hope he can keep it maintained.
It's very dark..but clutter free.
@@deltamahar4254 I agree, it is a little dark. I looked up this show and it is from 10 yrs ago. Nowadays they would probably go lighter and that would make the rooms look larger. Still anything is better than all that clutter.
@@peggypeggy4137 Nope, if you go to that designer's website she's still doing everything dark 😆NYGC 4Ever!
Ray: I have a feminine side and I like 70s club vibes.
Abby: So gentleman's club? Got it.
so funny 🤣🤣🤣
Ray new passion is buying items to sell them
all this is lovely but useless if they dont get professional help mentally to stop them hoarding again
Agreed, it's such a shame the show's (main audience's) priority for the money is pop makeover instead of client treatment and viewers' education of the disorder
I would’ve have given him more for the Leicas!
Ray is such a lovely man, but OMG the designer should be sacked
In the end - Fantastic design!! I do have to agree that I think this changed his life & mindset!! Good luck in your future!!🙏
Black, brown and red! ‘ gentlemen’s club’ decor in an ex Corpy flat, just needs a stripper pole in the middle. To go with his giant speakers, bleugh, reminds me of Changing Rooms with a twist, good programme though apart from Dilly Daydream’s eclectyuck designs this episode 🤷🏼♀️
I.get it u have so !little growing up I bought things I could not get back then I hoarded now
My idea is a new type of storage facility that caters to people who enjoy collecting … each storage space would
have shelving and closed off spaces to hide valuables with locks ect … spread out and photographed so these collections can be insured also. The owner would have more space to sell off little by little and add other valuable finds. When valuables are stored in a way with easy access and visibility the owner of this unique storage unit has his valuable collectible hobby ongoing instead of selling it off at one go for a
small amt 2000.00 spent on wallpaper and paint.
You can not replace the time
and enjoyment these items do bring to
many people. People need to keep their dwelling separate from their valuables. I think my idea may work for
someone looking to start a unique business.
Ooh. What a lovely idea! Like a series of private museums. If they had an open day, I'd buy a ticket.
Older people needed much clean slate rather than too harsh colors.
This is definitely not one of my favorite shows. Storage Hoarders for the win!! Hope Ray is doing ok.
What a clueless designer! Doesn't she realise that dark walls make a small room look even smaller!
That designer is like a bad 90s changing rooms episode. Every time 🙈
LOVE WATCHING THIS AND THE BEAUTIFUL TRANSFORM AND HOW HAPPY YOU HAVE MADE THESE PEOPLE AND FAMILYS GOD BLESS THE WORK YOU DO 🙏
She didn’t listen to any of his ideas she kept saying different things while he was very attached to his speakers
