  • This is one of the single most important videos of mine and the fewest people will watch it. At a quick glance it appears like a simple move that does not require a lot of attention, but trust me when I tell you that having the ability to regain the underhook is one of the most important things you can do.
First of all it is important to avoid being flattened on your back. You should always have the underhook when available but I understand that sometimes your timing will be off and your opponent will get it. In these instances it is important to block the bicep so that you are not flat on your back, being crossfaced with your opponent having the underhook.
Once you have blocked the bicep it is important to bridge up and over. Make that space for your underhook with your hips and not by trying to take a shortcut by the armpit. The space is made by dropping the hip (the space is made on the way down) AND by moving your hips back (reference the video).
Once you have the underhook the world is your oyster! It opens up the back, gives power to your sweeps and takes away your opponents ability to flatten you out!

Love videos like this. Not so much of a particular move, but more of a "do this, don't do that", or a concept, as you stated in the title. Thank you.

Thank you! I always find myself flattened out against bigger partners. Perhaps I need to get better at anticipating their actions and at least block the cross face right away.

Please explain why framing the knee is important? Is it correct that once you got the underhook the cross face threat is gone?

+Данила Мещеряков Once you get the underhook you have the ability to defend against the crossface by burying your head against the belly button. Once your head is deep down there then you don't have to worry about the crossface.
There are 3 reasons to frame the knee.
      1. Framing the knee spreads out their base and makes it more difficult for them to quickly transition. It also defends against the Reverse sit, Marcello Pass and Twister Half Guard.
      2. Framing the knee turns their body slightly away from you making their body parallel with yours (as opposed to perpendicular). A lot of their passes are going to start with them keeping weight on you and thus trying to turn into you. It also makes it easier to get the back.
      3. It opens a direct pathway under their body to their far ankle. That pathway is important if you want to play the oldschool sweep, deep half guard or to feed the belt between their legs. All of these require space under the body.
