The genius that is President Oakes. His ability to pluck out from the myriad of thoughts and commandments that which is most needed to address that which is most resisted and so do it in a loving and compassionate way. The man is truly inspired and I love him.
Thank you so much, Jesus Christ 🙏 for thy loving living Prophets and Apostles, leading thy kingdom here on earth, The Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints 🙏 ❤️
I'm a really big fan of you President Oaks🫂 This subject of contention is a difficult one for me, and I've worked on it for decades... I made a covenant to stand for Jesus Christ's church, and I do that. Sometimes, my bipolar kicks in when people spew venomous out and out lies which IF not refuted may be mistaken as truth to those who don't know any better. I won't allow someone seeking truth to be misled and/or deliberately deceived. I repent & ask for guidance OFTEN. THANK YOU for bringing this truth to the forefront of my thoughts. 👍🏻🙏🏼 I wish I knew where to draw the line, but I am better than I USED to be🌟
That’s so vulnerable ❤ Keep working and pray for God to teach you where to draw the line. Lessons come line upon line as you’re ready for them. God bless you!
Christ ruffled some feathers. Abinidi ruffled feathers. Samual the Lamanite ruffled some feathers. Same with Jeremiah. In fact, all prophets who called out sin of the people (often leaders of the church) caused some real upheaval. They were peacemakers for Jesus, doesn’t mean they rolled over and didn’t cause any contention among the sinners.
Ruffling feathers is not the same as being contentious. Clear statements of truth can be frustrating or even enrage others, but can still have been delivered in love.
Jesus was crucified, prophets were stoned to death, people have always reviled things that were unpopular yet necessary. And Jesus Christ Works through His prophets they are his chosen vessels and they are faithful❤❤❤
No, it's not. Commandments can be temporary like in Deuteronomy 20:17 "thou shalt utterly destroy" temporarily overrode the commandment from Exodus 20:13 "thou shalt not kill". "This is the principle on which the government of heaven is conducted-by revelation adapted to the circumstances in which the children of the kingdom are placed. Whatever God requires is right, no matter what it is, although we may not see the reason thereof till long after the events transpire."
No, it’s not. The temporary nature of some commandments is obvious. God commanding the saints to head west was obviously temporary. Polygamy was obviously temporary. Those are just two examples.
I’d appreciate it if he would be more specific, give specific examples of these things that he’s talking about. Like an example conversation of what is hateful speech versus not. How to go about being a peacemaker, but still standing up for your values. It would be really cool if he talked about things like “dishonest Harmony” and “honest conflict”. All these things he’s saying are very generalized not leading to very specific instruction.
Just one thought I have in this vein is, that last year I found myself in a situation (nothing to do with anything religious) where I didn't know what to do "next" after a years-long process that has been ongoing for all long I have truly exhausted everything I ever knew in the past about what to do next...so I went searching for people who would be people that know what you're supposed to do next in this situation. And when I listened as closely as I could to what these people said you're supposed to do, I had to conclude that their best most sage wisdom was basically not "what to do," but, "You have to become this certain kind of person--and then that kind of person knows what to do in any kind of related scenario." And I saw the higher way of thinking about that but I did also see how that's not necessarily easy to achieve or get to/become...but the wise people who deal with this stuff all the time were truly giving wisdom and that was truly what was wise. In the same way, Pres. Oaks and all leaders called by Christ is not as much "do this" but rather "become like Christ--become the kind of person like Jesus is...and then you know what to do in any related scenario." And that's not the easiest, bud it really is the answer. So as Pres. Oaks here is bringing up Jesus and showing us again a profile of Him, and also talking about having the right spirit with us, as Jesus has the right spirit...and then we will know what to do better than being told "this is the actions to take or the words to say."
And that's why we have prayer and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ because every person is unique and he will work with each of us personally🫂🙏🏼💜
@@mmkvoe6342 I can see what you and those are very good points. However, as a young adult growing up in the church I felt like there were gaping holes in what to accept and not accept in relationships. Like gaslighting and consent. Perhaps we as a culture were still figuring those out at the time. I don’t understand why we’re not spreading more knowledge about these concepts now though.
President Dallin H Oaks gave counsel for us in our day and in such a loving Christlike way. I feel as if President Dallin H Oaks might become our next prophet, to help us through the tribute in which might start happening in the coming months or years. We will need a prophet who realizes how to handle things that might be controversial to God's teaching, and thus be able help guide us through some tribulations of which we must endure. May God continue to bless President Dallin H Oaks and preserve his life. I sence that the mantle of the Presidentency might happen before next General Conference.
Lifetime member of the church here. ✋ If we expect people to respect our desire to be called by our name, “The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints” instead of “Mormons”, I propose that it is perfectly reasonable that we extend the same courtesy to members of the LGBTQ community, who wish to be called by specific pronouns or names different from their birth names. Basic courtesy, and rules of respect 101. Call people by what they want be called by.
False equivalence. The name of the church was given by the lord through revelation found in doctrine and covenants 115. Gender is an eternal characteristic of our pre mortal, mortal, and post mortal identity. It can’t be changed on a whim, but is an eternal truth. This is also why the church does not endorse affirming someone as the opposite gender that they are not. This is a matter of truth. It is more important to distinguish ourselves as members as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Jesus taught us the law of unconditional love, which is expressed fully in this talk. We cannot have love with judgement in our hearts. If there’s a law of judgement, it seems to not be ours to own. Our laws are: Love your Lord with your heart, soul, and mind. Love your neighbor as yourself. We don’t have to agree with our neighbor to extend love their way. We don’t have to say that they are wrong (nor should we), but live by our truth and example, just as Christ taught us. If there’s a time for judgement, let there be, but it won’t be by me. I am trying to live by Christ’s living lesson to us. This world is complicated. I truly believe the only way to heal is to set aside our own ego, let go, and live by example by FULLY living these laws. I try to imagine Jesus in the situation of dealing with people that are “outside of the standard” as defined in our proclamation to the world. Then, I remember the story of the woman who committed adultery… The Pharisees suggest to stone her. Jesus, instead, showcased a path of love, a path to healing. This talk was written for the world, but particularly for the members of this church. We are endowed with the great blessing to be a part of this church so we can extend our love to the world and be the example until he comes again.
@@andrewdurfee3896 What a weird false equivalence claim - many don't place any particular importance on what the D&C says and the LDS church (and it's holy prophets) have spent Lord knows how much time and resources on massive ad campaigns specifically and cheerfully referring to themselves as Mormons. The change in emphasis definitely looks like the "whim" of one particular individual who has a personal pet peeve about nicknames. And, more power to him - he is in a position to request such an emphasis. As for gender, the concrete, black and white view put forth by many demonstrates a poor grasp of the biological realities of this world. Yes, of course, our species has typical dimorphic characteristics but those who fall outside these typical natures are not a few. In fact they vastly outnumber the reported membership of the LDS church.
Are the saints to blame for innocent LDS people in prison? If they are loving their neighbor why does it happen every day in Utah? Answer: because most saints are uncomfortable and afraid around cops and attorneys and they deceive themselves into thinking the guy or gal in jail must have done something wrong. (Helaman 6:38) I'm glad Elder Bednar addresses Helaman a bit because chapter 6 is always left out of the Sunday school Manual.

Divine Esquire President Dallin H. Oaks, your words never disappoint.🙂↕️
I feel blessed by this msg let us be pacemakers i all place
This is such a needed talk. I was hoping these things would be addressed this Conference.
AWESOME talk
The Bible says that God does not change and neither do his commands.
Circumcision animal sacrifice women speaking in church and thousands of laws given by god to Moses yeah he changes his commands
Nor do His ordinances! Not ever!
Have you heard of the law of Moses? Do you keep it? If not, does that mean it was a temporary law?

Wonderful talk! The apostles and prophets are always spot on in addressing issues of our day. We are truly blessed with their counsel.
These prophetic words are timely.
I have a talk similar to this in sacrament few months ago. I am glad I did.
I believe everyone has the potential to change for the greater good in themselves to serve the lord with faith. Thank you for this wonderful message.
An important message and something we should pursue and work towards in these times.
I wasn't able to hear the full talk until now but I love it so much. Thank you Pres. Oaks, and the Lord!

It doesn't take a "truly inspired man of God" to point out you should love others and not be contentious and rude. Jesus taught that back in his day.

Which teachings?
Because it came from a funeral text not written by the hand of Abraham
