@Emily Roberts I just did my research. Thanks for correcting me! I definitely made an assumption based on the combined beliefs of Heavenly Father and Mother having physical bodies, and the creation of spirit children. I made a leap.
Oddly when I was younger, I was explained "better to marry than to burn" differently - as "better to marry (such that you can have licit sex) than to burn (in gehenna for violating thou shalt not commit adultery)".
Matthew 5:21-32 is where Jesus first introduces this teaching on divorce and lust. It is also where he says "if your hand offends you, cut it off." Wouldn't this lend to a literal interpretation of castration in the 2nd teaching?
It's definitely something that would be appealing to women in that culture. Think of how precarious life would be with a Jewish husband. You'd be a hostage for life. If you want to sell a religion to people, you won't increase market share with people who have something to lose. You get it by targeting the people who would benefit. If I were a Jewish woman, I would prefer more rights rather than having to deal with a husband. Of course.. then, we have Henry VII and his "special" way of getting out of marriage. I wish the text had said.. "women get everything. Men get nothing"...it would be safer. That way a husband would be incentivized to not kill his wife and profit. Instead, he'd be kissing that estate to ..... his mother-in-law and he would have to go back to his Jewish mother who would yell at him.
Hey Dan - just some food for thought. I deeply appreciated David Hester's piece, “Eunuchs and the Postgender Jesus: Matthew 19:12 and Transgressive Sexualities.” Journal for the Study of the New Testament 28, no. 1 (2005): 13-40. He reminds us that eunuchs were anything but celibate (have sex with men and women)! I think it's important content and it helped to shape my chapter on this passage in the book I'm currently revising.
Dr Bird, do you think it could it still refer to the giving up of family life though? I'm not sure sexuality vs asexuality is the author's intended emphasis (being more our modern concern) but what is meant by being a eunuch is the life of a single person who voluntarily does not continue their legacy through marriage, children, and grandchildren - in line with an apocalyptic outlook. That includes chastity but only as a consequence of Jewish sexual ethics rather than the state of being a eunuch.
@@fre2725 oh, dear. It was, tremendously so! Short version: I agree with your comments, but I also cannot stop thinking about the radicality of referring to a EUNUCH in that exchange. I think it is much more radical than most ppl realize. I have been revising this chapter in my current book all day today. It’s fun stuff to think about. 😊
In Isaiah 56: 4-5 the bible says eunochs who serve the Lord are entitled to a couple of extra heavenly blessings. 1) they get an eternal monument in God's own house 2) they get a title that is far better than a title that children can provide. In biblical times, when a king gave someone a title it came with other things such as land, authority, responsibilities, wealth, etc. How much more so when a title is granted by the king of kings and lord of lords?
1:10 I can't cite something right now, other then Wikipedia, sorry. I've heard, don't @ at me, the claim Origen castrated himself is most likely false. As a later invention and accusation of him. Remember, the Eastern Orthodox Church grew to hate Origin, as Justinian unjustly ordered the bishops to condemn his teaching and more or less his persona, as a heretic. Again, sorry, no source, maybe you can help me out here?
1:50 „For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God; and no one should ever violate or exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly warned you.“ 1 Thessalonians 4:3-6 Is this what you mean with holy clean sex ? That passage has zero to do with sex whatsoever. Your false understanding is based on the altered meaning of “porneia” as “sexual immorality” which is not its meaning, neither in the bible, not in this context. It is about keeping your vessel clean. You wife is not “your vessel” but a vessel is your usefulness to God, your service see 2. Timothy 2:20-22 You are not to live out your calling emotionally as this may “exploit your brother” see verse 6. Nothing exploits a brother when you have real athletic passionate sex and being horny during the sex. That is the intend of sex see 1 Cor 7. You get rid of that burning desire. Sorry but I just cannot take you serious when you explain the bible with the sex view of Augustine. Are you partially blind or do you lie on purpose ?
This is a weird way of expressing Paul's sentiments from 1 Corinthians. As for self castration, it sounds awful, but was it more painful than what Abraham is commanded by god to do to himself in Genesis?
A different interpretation in the passage starting in verse 3 is that when Jesus said in verse 11 that "all men cannot receive this saying" he was stating that some men can not receive the law of marriage and was not promoting abstinence. He had just taught and was teaching about the importance and sacredness of marriage, by his teaching that marriages should not be done away with flippantly. He was replying to the thought that maybe it would be better to not marry by saying in verse 12 that some men can not live the law of marriage for many reasons, including inability reasons (probably to include being gay). This is why he gives us the code for thinking deeper by saying, "He that is able to receive it, let him receive it", which implies that when he used the term "eunuchs" he was including all who for one reason or other are not able to marry heterosexually.
Yes. Your spouse will be your brother or sister in Christ. We won't be be married but one spiritual family bride under Christ. We will have total memory of our earthly family and spouse but they will be out heavenly family.
It says what it says in the Bible some will make themselves Eunuch... they will mutilate their own body to be able to enter the kingdom of heaven! Never heard of anybody being born a eunuch!✌🏼
Dan, are you familiar with the Essenes teachings on the permanence of marriage and the prohibition of remarriage in the case of separation from a living spouse? Jesus seems to have been heavily influenced by the Essenes ideas - especially regarding marriage and the angelic realm as evidenced by his apparent quotation of 1 Enoch 15:7 in his debate with the Sadducee’s regarding the Woman with 7 dead husbands. The Shepherd of Hermas seems to affirm that early teaching and some mainline denominations such as the PRCA continue it today.
(Edit to condense my comment into a single long post). Bold of you to assume that present day eunuchs don’t exist today as well, or maybe you didn’t mean to exclude us. 😅 People who don’t need or want to have sex. There is a word for that. Asexual! We are naturally abstinent, which bothers a lot of Christians who somehow think it should always be a struggle. Hearing that “some people are born Eunuchs” is very comforting, as being stated by Christ himself. :) That is about as undeniable as it gets. We may NATURALLY not desire sex, and Jesus speaks to an affirming example of such. Let me go on. We also may not get married, Paul teaches that the unmarried can be MORE concerned with the things of the Lord (rather contrary to the belief that married people can somehow be of more value to the church, when their primary concern is for their spouse!!). We may not have children, well if you can cherry-pick and say some teachings only apply to early Christians (like women can’t teach, should wear head coverings) then the “go forth and multiply” told to the earliest people does not hold for us too (and what about all those who were/are barren and childless?). I’m just making points about these 3 very basic things just in the hope it might encourage others out there who might be 1) asexual, and therefore misunderstood by the church, 2) unmarried and choosing to remain single, 3) don’t, won’t, or can’t have children
Heaven sounds like a dreadful and tedious place. First your free will is removed so you no longer want to sin and then your sexuality is removed so you no longer want to have sex. Why anyone thinks this is a good place to go to FOREVER is beyond me.
I think you should read the Bible yourself instead of listening to other people. Sinning is not good yet we all do because we are tempted and sometimes we can’t avoid it. Second, sex is not everything, so don’t make it seems like you can’t live without it. All those things that you mentioned is like the world we live in now and it’s much worse, so tell me Is this the world you want to live in FOREVER? Because you thinking this might be any better is beyond me. Anyways whoever you are I hope you’re doing great❤
@@rhiannaroberts8712 " All those things that you mentioned is like the world we live in now and it’s much worse" How did you determine that it's "much worse"? "Second, sex is not everything, so don’t make it seems like you can’t live without it. " Maybe, but why do you want to? Or should you have to? It's such a weird take, "Sex isn't everything." No one said it was. However, it's also not nothing, and it doesn't make sense why it should be completely taken away.
It is funny that Genesis starts out by suggesting that it not good for man to be alone but man should have a wife. Over time people respond to God by saying it is good for man to be alone and be celibate.
If that were true we wouldn't be here. Sexual desire drives procreation. Plus, my life would feel empty if it was just drugs and rock-n-roll without any sex.
@John Campbell I agree with you to an extent. We still have the intellect and necessity to procreate other than the desire for sex. But yea, you're life would be less satisfying sexually lol
I don't understand why people follow faiths that deny their humanity and passions. We should learn how to live with our desires as part of a rich life -- the way of the Abrahamic faiths is anti-human, and the endless genocide that comes from them is proof of this. I don't understand why you follow a faith that wants to kill a beautiful part of yourself.
@Lindsey Asterius I'm an atheist sweetheart, and I agree with you. I'm making a biological statement that would in turn, lower change the behavior of humans. Sex and sexual drive cause a lot of problems in this world. I'm sure you can fathom what I'm talking about. Personally I love sex, and I'm usually responsible with controlling myself, yet there are billions on this planet who are not.

This conclusions do not follow here and this is a bit sensationalist. Two texts, especially stemming from celibate people, within earliest Christianity, do no attest to a "widespread notion of asexuality/celibacy as the ideal within the earliest stages of Christianity." It also doesn't follow that Paul recommending marriage to avoid "burning with passion" implies that sex is only to be engaged as minimally as possible. He basically says in 1 Cor 7, that spouses should submit to one another's sexual desires. There's nothing particularly noteworthy about that. What couples are having sex when neither has a desire? It doesn't follow from that, that sex isn't something to be enjoyed in and of itself, or that the desire of sex, or the act itself, is in any way negative.
I laughed. I love it. I genuinely appreciate how precise, how accurate, and how accessible you are. You've genuinely inspired such an admiration and curiosity in me that has refreshed my interest in biblical literature, much more than my evangelical relatives.

I had a history professor that, in the matching portion of his tests, always listed “Origin” and “brick.”
@@JenniferBirdPhD Pardon I think your comment was cut or shortened somehow.
Thanks so much for this reference!
@@trevrockrock16 Hm. Okay. Nope, I’m fully informed on eunuchs, and I don’t feel like engaging any more beyond that. Peace out ~
In her first novel, Flannery O’Connell has Hazel Motes blind himself. “If your eye is the problem, tear it out…”
And if your nuts are the problem cut them off.
I never linked Origin of Alexandria to Matthew 19. I'll have to think about that, thanks.
This was a great explanation 💡

So there’s people living like Apostle Paul today, in this day and age?
This was really good.
1:50 „For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God; and no one should ever violate or exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly warned you.“
1 Thessalonians 4:3-6
Is this what you mean with holy clean sex ? That passage has zero to do with sex whatsoever.
Your false understanding is based on the altered meaning of “porneia” as “sexual immorality” which is not its meaning, neither in the bible, not in this context. It is about keeping your vessel clean. You wife is not “your vessel” but a vessel is your usefulness to God, your service see 2. Timothy 2:20-22
You are not to live out your calling emotionally as this may “exploit your brother” see verse 6.
1:38
What if we do want to marry but nobody in the opposite sex wants us because we are the ugly duckling???
Ugly whaaat?😅😂😂 Man that cruel
I didn't castrate myself, but I did light myself on fire burning 80% of my body. It is safe to say I have taken myself off the market.
🙄
im sorry
Can you please do a video on Matthew 22 and marriage in heaven. Some seem to think that marriage is dissolved in heaven. Is that what it really means?
Yes. Your spouse will be your brother or sister in Christ. We won't be be married but one spiritual family bride under Christ. We will have total memory of our earthly family and spouse but they will be out heavenly family.
No....that isn't what is being addressed at all. It's speaking of leverite marriage
The great Christian philosopher Ned Flanders.
and the catholic priests irked the notion of castration
Can you speak to Jesus' statement in the book of Thomas about women needing to transfigure to male?
Anyways whoever you are I hope you’re doing great❤
@@rhiannaroberts8712 " All those things that you mentioned is like the world we live in now and it’s much worse"
How did you determine that it's "much worse"?
"Second, sex is not everything, so don’t make it seems like you can’t live without it. "
Maybe, but why do you want to? Or should you have to? It's such a weird take, "Sex isn't everything." No one said it was. However, it's also not nothing, and it doesn't make sense why it should be completely taken away.
Dan, have you done any videos regarding reincarnation?
I guess I’m mixing up being asexual with being ugly..😂😂 I guess there’s a difference 😢😢
me too! lol ugos unite
😂😂
"No marriage" in heaven doesn't necessarily mean no sex. You skipped that possibility.
It is funny that Genesis starts out by suggesting that it not good for man to be alone but man should have a wife. Over time people respond to God by saying it is good for man to be alone and be celibate.
Because they are realizing the temptation and wickedness of our nature
7:30
Just imagine how much better life would be if sex wasn't pleasurable and we only had sex for procreation.
@@LNSY144 I'm passionate about eating so much food that one day an entire intact summer sausage will one day make it's way into my heart and kill me

If heaven is an asexual place, then we should stop having sex right now and emulate that. Give me a break.
it is. if humans were asexual we could all be in heaven soon enough.
Bro you pretty bad about not referencing sources. "scholars would say..." Translation: 'heres what I think'
Which pronouns were used for eunuchs during biblical times?
When you're so accustomed to Dan referencing exceptionally thorough scholarship then he hits you with a reference to Ned Flanders: 🧍
I laughed. I love it. I genuinely appreciate how precise, how accurate, and how accessible you are. You've genuinely inspired such an admiration and curiosity in me that has refreshed my interest in biblical literature, much more than my evangelical relatives.
