      Nathan, I upvoted but you missed the big thing here. You see, the reason BMW made people switch is important. You can't refill AGM batteries. You can refill flooded batteries. So, what this means is, wealthy people will have to get a new BMW battery every 5 years. Poorer and smarter people can refill flooded ones with distilled water to partially restore them for another 5 years. But it isn't just BMW. It's all makes. It's global corruption.

  • @stevenotto2581
    @stevenotto2581 5 лет назад +28

    The issue isn't the battery type. The issue is the BMW "Driving Dynamics" charging system that only charges the battery when the vehicle is coasting. It does so in the interest of squeezing every last mpg in fuel economy. If you do a lot of highway driving, your battery will last 8-10 yrs. But the vast majority of BMW owners just drive in town and the alternator isn't charging very much at all because they aren't coasting much.
    Blaming this battery or that battery isn't telling the full story.

    • @SPHINX144
      @SPHINX144 3 года назад +1

      This. Also, if you set your driving mode to eco pro it won't engage the alternator when coasting and it will instead hypermile to maximize fuel economy. Running the alternator cause engine brake that will slow you down and decrease your coasting distance, I noticed that when I used eco pro a lot and my battery would be often be low in charge.

    It’s a known fact that AGM batteries take more abuse and last longer and cycles deeper than regular flooded, that’s why they are fitted to start stop vehicles and military vehicles . I sold my last car 5 years old with original AGM battery, a friends car is 9 years old with start stop and on original AGM. Your alternator must not be designed for AGM.

    • @Mickytdi

      @@youuu4307 An eventual killer. A normal flooded battery won’t last under the same conditions. It also has to endure the abuse of energy recouperation. The batter is usual kept at 80% charge for most part. My AGM is now 6 years with 165,000 miles on the clock. According to diagnostics my starter has done 45,000 start/stop cycles. It’s starting to show it’s age but it’s far from failing to start the car. I estimate another 1/2 years out of the battery.

    From my own experience, I did a lot of long journeys in a late '07 1 series diesel which I bought at 2 years 90k miles with original BMW AGM battery. I scrapped the car last august and the car was starting to tell me the battery was on the way out but it started just fine. So that's better than any other battery I have ever owned.

    I've had my replaced BMW AGM battery for 4.5 years on me E82. I drive about once or twice a week it's not a daily driver. Sometimes I let it sit for weeks at a time. No issues... We'll see how it goes. The battery it replaced was the original. It only lasted 115k miles and 9 years... I think the key is. I live in a warm climate. I'd rather have a more efficient battery that is lighter than an acid lead that tends to just die on you and wear out your alternator.

  • @GeorgeMcCollister

    I've only owned my E90 328i a year but I checked the battery today after it was hesitating to start. The negative terminal is marked 48 06 which seems to indicate it's an 90Ah 900A AGM battery from 2006! I'll probably replace it with a Costco battery since I'm cheap but I have to say I'm quite impressed. This is with it being garaged and barely driven for months during the pandemic.

  • @MrZm0geliS
    @MrZm0geliS 2 года назад +1

    It might be fine for warm climate. But drop that skinny as s battery in 3d m57 or n57 diesel and survive a proper winters it might be a different story real quick.
    But anyway make yourself a favor and stick to the manufacturers recommendations until you have enough knowledge to make better decision on your own. Also battery reset type or and capacity should be done to have a charging curve in spec if replaced.
    There is integrated intelligent battery management system for a reason.

    Flooded batteries are also destroyed if you run them totally flat, and its been problematic to me all my life. AGM battery is actually recommended for deep cycle situations, even if you substitute an AGM battery of slightly smaller capacity battery. My last AGM battery lasted 9 years, and it was in a sports car that is regularly left for 2 weeks without being driven or sometimes a coupe of months while I was overseas. It never had trouble starting. The lower leakage of AGM batteries is a major benefit for people in my situation. All of what you said in the video is contrary to my experience. Importantly the car requires coding for the AGM battery if you wish to retrofit, otherwise it will be damaged by over-charging.

      It will be overcharging so won't last as long as it should. You need to reset the timer also when registering new battery(as well as type of battery if changing type). A new battery is charged at a different rate to an old battery. It's a brilliant, simple, variable charging system normal folk just don't seem to understand. BMW do not say you "must" use AGM,in Australia they come with Lead/Acid as standard on most common models....this is U.S dealer BS.

    If you don't add distilled water to your flooded battery at least four times a year, it won't last as long as the VRLA or AGM types. Same is true if you use tap water or bottled drinking water instead of distilled water or rainwater. Also, AGM batteries don't emit a corrosive fog while charging so the area around the battery doesn't become corroded. Many years ago, I saw a Mazda 626 whose frame rail crumbled, because of drippings from the battery. So each type offers some advantages, it's a question of which will do best in a particular situation. If you're the driver who doesn't like to open the hood and check things over regularly (the elites who are original BMW buyers), the AGM will likely last longer.

    Have a 2004 330ci. I know for a fact that if just install another AGM battery I do not have to do any programming on any E46 prior to 2005. What I don't know is if I DO NOT go with the AGM battery does that mean I would then have to do the programming due to the change in battery type? I get a lot of misguided advise but Nathan so far you have been dead on and I trust what you say.

      Speed sensor is the left rear abs sensor on the e53, not the right like e39, check to see if the blue connector is corroded, make sure the pins are ok and not missing there will be 2 on the car side of the plug , make sure the sensor is not Chinese , if still nothing pull the cluster and check the solder points where the middle plug plugs in, and where the speedometer attaches to the board , its very rare to have the cluster issue but then again you never know what someone has done to it before you owned it , like always without having the car here to look at these are all just possibilities

    After looking around and researching as much as I could. There are a number of suppliers of OEM BMW. Looking at after market, there are a few that will work for my 335is. The best I found was the Odyssey 49-950 which slightly exceeded the OEM in specifications and warranty. It was a great deal on sale.
    Previously had moved a flooded lead acid battery to the trunk of another car and enclosed it with a Marine case. The problem with conventional lead acid batteries is they can spill and the do breathe a corrosive acidic gas in to the surrounding area. Not good for cars nor people. The AGM battery will not spill nor will it vent if one connects the supplied vent tube. In terms of cycling, there is no comparison to AGM to flooded plate lead acid. The AGM can go much deeper and recover where the flooded plate will be severely impaired or ruined. this is one reason AGM are so prevalent in Marine applications.
    Optima moved all their production to Mexico over a decade ago as has every other battery manufacturer other than Dekka and Oddysey.
    Going cheap on any battery is its own reward. You will be stranded when it is most under stress.

I Also checked Canadian Tire and there cheapest h8 AGM was 310.99 CAD, the dealership was $337 CAD and bumper to bumper and Lordco Autoparts also NAPA autoparts and they were all about the same as Canadian Tire for h8 AGM. The first time my battery was on the fritz it wasn’t exactly obvious, the car would start no problem but if you drove 10 minuets, stoped to go to the bank or somewhere quick, when you went to restart the car bang nothing would happen. Brought the car back to Ralley BMW L.I., NY because the car was still under warranty, long story short they fixed a unrelated issue that was according to them $5,600.00 work, something transmission related I believe but it was covered under warranty so I only paid the $500 deductible, but they also said the reason for the car not starting all the time was the battery (I only had the car for 2 years at that point, bought used 2008 550i, purchased in 2013), dudes banged me for $600 just for the battery + installation, WTF!!!! So in all I paid $1,000 to get my car back, I swear I almost told them to take the battery out and I’d show up there with my own, needless to say I’ve never gone back to them for ANYTHING, plus my 3 year extended warranty was eventually up so I’m definitely never going back there. I’ve got a great indie shop that’s just blocks from my house walking distance, super fair prices, slow service but unbeatable prices and I’m very pleased with the work he’s done so far. • @andrzejraczynski1896
      @andrzejraczynski1896 3 года назад

      AGM aside, the start/stop is probably a great option for lease vehicles, you can save a few drops of gas, at the expense of unnecessary extra engine wear (that they don't have to care about cuz they'll be dumping the car in 2/3 years). Personally I leave it off, don't like that noticeable delay in 'go'.

    Nathan. This is insightful. However what about the latest models like X5 F15. They seem to have a lot of electronics and there are some scary comments out there on the internet that local lead acid battery would fry the electronics. I find it hard to believe. Have you seen success on these models ? In the USA AGM is relatively cheaper but in Asian countries these AGM are costing close to $800 and it’s a rip off. Customers pay because they are scared to brick the modules. What’s the real truth ?

    The reason that BMW wants you to put their AGM battery in their car is liability, not to money (specifically). they're not going to cover a 15 year old wet cell that puked in the battery well. I have run an Optima AGM (yellow) and I love them, never had a problem, but yes I drive my vehicles weekly.

    With batteries you’re paying for the warranty, the 50$ Walmart batteries are fine, and they have a 1 year warranty on them, all you gotta do is look at the dates to make sure you’re not getting an old one, as for agm vs. FLA I’ve seen no real difference in their life span, it’s all about how you take care of them, if you don’t drive but once a week or every other week, jnvest in a tender, this is how you get ten years out of a battery

    it was sitting in garage for 6 weeks and it drained the battery. Ive got it to start after plug it in to 240V charger overnight .
    It never fully charged this battery again . I had it on charger whole night and it has stopped taking charge , How can this happen ? battery warning light was on after 1 hr of driving .
    Looks like I've got only 2 yr out of original battery ?
    My 2017 Navigator started right up ... This thing/740e/, was dead .
    With Wallmart battery installed I drove over 900 miles and no problem at all .
    PS New battery for this vehicle is $ 369.99 plus TAX.
    Thanks for advice , Greatly appreciate it !

    Walmart Maxx Batteries are the best! They are made by Johnson Controls, a company that makes over 50% of the batteries on the market and sold under many brand names. I've been using them for years in Mercedes, BMW, Corvette, Ford cars etc. Lead Acid batteries are fine. Don't believe the AGM Hype! Just my 2 cents. Also, educate yourself about oils and fluids. You don't have to use "dealer fluid" unless you want to overpay 3x over. Like Nathan says "Educate yourself and spend wisely!"
