    On the battery management, does it allow to code and register new battery, where the battery amperage has been upgraded (e.g. 70Ah to 80Ah) from previous? Thanks.

  • @vasitudor3481
    @vasitudor3481 2 года назад +4

    Amperage or current is regulated by the state of charge of the battery. When the battery is weak, the electromotive force (voltage) is not strong enough to hold back the current from the alternator trying to recharge the battery. As the battery reaches a state of full charge, the electromotive force becomes strong enough to oppose the current flow from the alternator, the amperage output from the alternator will drop to close to zero, while the voltage will remain at 13.5 to 14.5. When more electrical power is used, the electromotive force will reduce and alternator amperage will increase. It is extremely important that when alternator efficiency is checked, both voltage and amperage outputs are checked. Each alternator has a rated amperage output depending on the electrical requirements of the vehicle.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy 3 года назад +6

      You have to register the batteries on BMWs since at least 15 years ago and now-a-days on most newer cars. The reason is that the computer adjusts how fast and hard it has to charge the battery and as the battery gets older, it charges ‘harder’ as it drains faster etc. so, when you put a new battery in and don’t tell the computer that it’s new, it continues to charge it as if it was old and will overcharge. This will ruin most batteries after 6-12 months.

      As you seem to believe is that Ah of the new battery should be registered... I have read in other places that a good tool registers the brand of the new battery, the Ah, and some other parameters. So I don't think this tool is that good, after all.
      Maybe it's enough if the new battery is exactly the same as the original, or is a original BMW battery.
      But in my F25/X3 2011 I think the original battery comes from an American supplier, and here in Europe an original battery may come from Varta... The American brand isn't on the market in Europe?!

    Also does that scan tool do non-bmw batteries? I changed mine which was 10 years old (yes very tired battery) but my scan tool wouldn't register the battery correctly.. Hi Mark,
      In my case the battery was changed right before I bought the car, but they never registered it as you saw in the video. There was no record of battery renewal at all. I figured it would be better to register it if it's not too late. The car was for sale by a dealer before sent to an auction, so I guess they just put a battery in and left it at that. It is not a BMW battery and the scanner registered it alright, I can't vouch on all models, though.

      Registering the battery means you are replacing the old battery with the same spec battery. Coding a battery would be what you are trying to do and install a different spec battery. I put a marine style battery connector on the negative side of the battery terminal (custom made terminal lead with eyelet connector) and it's secured with a wing nut, no tools required to disconnect the battery. Battery issues are a thing of the past in my Z3. You cannot use this tool to do it. It only registers . What is the Ah difference? I replaced a battery in an M3. Original size was 90 AGM and put a 95 AGM in. You do not need to register it as it is so close. The available values with a coder are 55, 60 70 80 90 105 with and with AGM tech. As it turns out the computer was pre programed as 91Ah with the 90Ah that was in there.

      I didn't encounter any issues like that, but it could be your issue. If you can, maybe leave the car on a trickle charger to see if it happens with the car connected. In my previous BMW, I had the car forget clock and some personalization, but never phone pairing.

    Hello,
    I have a 2012 BMW X5. I bought the scanner a few months ago. I am about to out the battery to the car. I have a question. Last time I disconnected the battery to work on the car. The footwell module blew out. Fortunately it was under warranty so I had it replaced. The battery is old now and needs to be replaced. Should I replace it myself and use the scanner to register the battery or should I take it to the shop and have them do it and not take the chance of blowing out the footwell module again?
    Thanks in advance.

      Well, I can't really make that decision for ya. I have removed and disconnected many batteries on BMWs and have never had any issues, so to me that's pretty strange. If you change the battery Ah you have to code.( like from a 90 Ah to a 80 Ah.) If you replace with the same size battery you do not have to code only register. You have to register all battery replacements in the BMW/MINI if it has an IBS system which I think started in 2007 or so.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy Год назад

      I don’t think it would go bad in the matter of weeks, but in a few months it can. This could happen if your old battery was very very bad and required a lot more charging and higher amperage. Then when you installed your new battery, it continues to charge it at the same higher rate and thus frying the new battery by overcharging it. This can also happen if you install a lower capacity battery.

      So, there are 2 options, one is for changing the same battery and the other is for changing the type or capacity. You do not have to specify, but your computer will then learn the new battery. I don't 100% trust this second option, but I have no evidence against it either.
