When he cries at the end, Alex realizes he did just as his father had. He abandoned his son and mother. Though he didn’t physically, he never stayed around. When he sees them playing piano, he is reminded of the father he could’ve been.

This song gets even sadder when you think about the fact that Phillip knew he was going to die so he’s trying to talk to his parents one last time because he knew that the last time they would ever speak again but his parents didn’t want to except the fact the he’s was about to die and that he expected the fact that he was going to die so there trying to help him live but when Eliza started counting she realized that he was about to die right then and there so she tried to have a few more moment with her son doing something that they used to do when they phillip was younger
Another thing that makes it even sadder is the fact that the beat of this song is Phillips heart beat and when he dies the beat of the song stops (I was not the one to discover this I’m just repeating the message)
Also “fun fact” it’s actually very sad and heart breaking fact acutely when Phillip was first learning to count in French the number 7 was always the hardest for him so he always messed it up so when he got shot at 7 he thought he messed up again and in this song he’s also trying to apologize for “forgetting” what Eliza taught him so Eliza is also trying to reassure her son that he didn’t mess up. (Saw this on Pinterest and I’m just repeating it I was not the one to discover this)
Edit: I highly doubt that what I said in the first part is historical accurate but this is what I gather from the song and animation also I’m reading and editing this after watching Hamilton on Disney and It hurts to read this I’m so sorry

You’re right and wrong about that. Peggy died 9 months before Philip so Eliza definitely didn’t come back from the funeral (unless it got delayed many months which is unlikely) but I think she was still upset about Peggy because she loved her that she was still wearing black when she went to see Philip

I made the dumb discussion of listening to this in class and when they asked me what's wrong all I could say was "stay alive" and my one friend who is also obsessed with Hamilton said "oh don't worry guys this is normal"

The fact that made me cry the most was when Phillip died There was a flashback of eliza and Phillip smiling while playing the piano..
A lot of people say that when Philip said: "I'm so sorry for forgetting what you taught me." That he was referring to counting, but I don't think that makes sense for two reasons:
1. He graduated from college. I'm assuming to do that you've got to know how to count to ten.
2. His mom taught him how to count to ten in FRENCH. They counted in English, which again, he should know.
I think what he's referring to would make more sense if the song, "Let It Go" hadn't been cut. In the song, Eliza tells Hamilton that he could just let a grudge he has (against Burr, if I remember correctly) go, and stay alive for her.
I think that Eliza taught Philip it's okay to let things go. However, Philip, wanting to defend the honor of his father, was willing to take it as far as a duel, which resulted in his death.
Philip is sorry because he knows he went against something his mother taught him, and now he won't be able to stay alive for her. He thinks he *disappointed* her by not letting what George said go.
Edit: Of course, it's fine if you believe that Philip was referring to the counting. George did fire at seven, and Philip is probably so tired (physically and emotionally) that he may believe he miscounted.
Yes, you are correct that since Philip went to school and college, he should be able to count to ten by now. But he was referring to when his mother taught him how to count to ten (I know it was in French but still, it is to ten and Philip remembered that time spent with his mother counting together because she was standing over him as he was dying) And he felt ashamed that he "forgot how to count to ten". He thought he counted wrong since Eacker shot at 7. 😞 That's just what I know!! You are right btw! :DD

Sorry to break your hearts more but:
After Philip was shot, his doctor said he demonstrated eloquence and poise despite the situation and pain he was in. He was taken to someone's house, (I forgot who) and his father was sent for. When Alexander came, he was in so much distress that he passed out. When he was woken again, he went to his son, checked Philip's weak pulse, turned to the doctor and grabbed his arm and said "Doctor, I despair."
When Eliza came you can probably imagine it was pretty much like this. It was heartbreaking for every one of them. They stayed with Philip and he, as many did before they died at the time, talked about his faith in God and asked God to forgive him and stuff. He died about 15 hours after his duel in a lot of pain.
When the funeral happened, Alexander was so depressed and shaken that a few friends had to hold him up as he approached his son's grave in Trinity Church. Afterwards no one was the same. Angelica Hamilton, the eldest daughter, fell into some mental illness that trapped her in a childlike state. She talked "to" and about Philip as if he were still alive, and she oftentimes couldn't recognize family members. So in reality, Alex and Eliza lost two children.

@@Carl-ld5jy yeah I know about that fact I've read about the duel, what I'm trying to say is in most shows/movies when a character dies you tell yourself "this person doesn't even exist this never actually happened" to attempt to make yourself stop crying or at least not cry as hard but with this Philip actually existed and he actually died becuase of a stupid mother f*cker (srry I really hate George Eacker if you couldn't tell 😂😂) also I wrote this comment when I just watched Hamilton for the first time, so before I actually did my own research on what really happened

the worst part of philips death was that him being the oldest son of a founding father, alexander had very high expectations for him. just for him to die so young. he was going on the right path but this one incident ruined it all.

actually, in real life, Eacker didn't shoot at seven. it was just them kind of awkwardly standing there for a second until Philip raised his gun to the sky and Eacker shot him as he was raising his gun. so, in a way, it kinda is Hamilton's fault i guess.
