  • I was in residency at PAF Performance Arts Forum and I meet this extraordinary artist. he allowed me to video his process of making intriguing and beautifully mysterious prints.
    His text:
Elie Mirdain

Okay I am a master print maker one of things that is so disappointing is that this is a mess. The purity and white of the paper counts just as much as image. Just applying ink and then pressing does not make an interesting print. Monotype or Monoprinting has such potential and this is not it. Whether it is hand pressed or by printing on a press. Sometimes the beauty of a print is its clean edges and the beauty of the paper so important. A print may be anything, I do not really see how this is mysterious. There are so many better results with clarity of vision and clean environment. One of the things I have always taught and been taught is purity of the print meaning the paper should be also with out fingerprints and the signing of the print is also important. Not a sloppy mess. Look at the masters and there is a wonderful video of a trace monoprint done by students who are handicapped it is clean, it is beautiful and they walked all over it. Also check out Akua monoprinting. A mess does not make a print wonderful.

I have to agree with you, Bonnie. I'm a life-long artist, working in all mediums including mono-prints, etching and lino. I'm all for abstract expressionism, but this just, suspiciously, seems like more "Show" than anything else. What's Truly mysterious, is why anyone would find this guy extraordinary. With all that "Show," I would expect some kind of rewarding finish, or end result. Just think about it. He could have stopped after 2 minutes in, or, really, at any point in the "process," and the result would be very much the same. Maybe he's a performance artist, and I just missed reading that part.

I am wondering if a better visual might help me understand why not just start with a fully black surface; I think I may be missing information here in the creative process because I cannot see more closely!

Wow! I LIKE the finished product and understand it is an Artistic dance to Create a random yet controlled product. I would have not have gone through all the adding and removing ink. The beauty of ART is there is NO wrong way. The TEXTURES and the placement of the finished product all goes to placement and timing. I guess I just don't have enough patience to do things the L O N G and maybe better way. Thank You for your Video and to the Artist for this ART Lesson in METHODS. Passion is seldom seen in the works.

oh my goodness, this is amazing. I was wondering what on earth he was doing and was about to turn it off, but I was curious. So happy that I waited!!! would love to know what type of paper he used, and what type of ink/paint he used, if that info is available. Wonderful!!

  • @veronicalucas4213

I get it. the image is pushed through to the backside of the paper and that is the finished piece. he doesnt flip it over because the inked side touching the plate is the back of the print. thats why he is using such think paper. He is showing you the finished print. interesting.

hahaha are you for real ? what a joke you are, lucky you , you have the peacocks to see some real art
and my family owns two galleries one in NY one in Tokyo
Man go back to school, no, actual, just stop art altogether , being rich and having a big house doesn't make your work valuable,
I have seen homeless people squating on the street and producing better pieces than that .
